Yngwie Malmsteen – Attack!! (Release Year-2005)
For some reason, I feel compelled to keep buying the latest releases by Yngwie Malmsteen. Luckily, I scored this disc for a whopping $3.00, so I figured it was worth the risk, in case I didn’t enjoy it.
Attack features the former voice of Rainbow, Doogie White, former Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian, and longtime drummer Patrick Johansson.
As much as I try to get into Attack!!, I have trouble doing so. There is no question, that Yngwie Malmsteen is an extremely talented guitar player, but as a song writer, I think he may be a little lacking. Attack!! features plenty of neo-classical guitar noodling, and light speed double bass drumming, but the songs lack heart, or anything that make you want to listen to them a second time. Most of these songs are just a high speed jam sessions with lyrics thrown in for good measure.
If you heard one Malmsteen song on Attack!!, you have heard them all. If you have to listen to this disc, check out the track Stronghold. This song has some Dio era Black Sabbath like elements to it, and is this CD’s sole redeeming track.
This isn’t a disc that I will not be recommending to anyone, except the die hard fans of Yngwie. Now, I know why I was able to pick this up for $3.00.

The best collaboration he did was with the legend Joe Lynn Turner. A shame he didn’t treat Jorn Lande better when he was his touring singer for a short time, that might have led to a album with Lande. Wonder if Yngwie ever regrets that?
I agree with you guys about songwriting being his biggest problem, but I fortunately never feel compelled to buy any of his stuff. I think Trilogy is the only one I have and I got it pretty cheap.
I have the same problem, I always feel the need to buy Yngwie’s new albums. I’ve got to agree with the “if you’ve heard one song, you’ve heard them all” comment. That’s been the problem on most of Malmsteen’s records lately. I understand the guy wants to make his own music, and he wants to control everything, but if you are a weak songwriter then no amount of guitar talent can cover it up.
The last Malmsteen album I really enjoyed was FACING THE ANIMAL (1997) with Mats Leven on vocals. I thought ALCHEMY (1999) was boring and WAR TO END ALL WARS (2000) was unlistenable due to the poor production job courtesy of Yngwie. ATTACK! and UNLEASH THE FURY with Doogie are better but Malmsteen needs to give up some control.
