Velcro Pygmies - American Muscle (Release Year - 2006)I never expected to find a decent glam metal band in the Bluegrass State. This proves to me that quality glam bands can come from just about anywhere in the world.

Louisville, Kentucky’s Velcro Pygmies have been playing and touring clubs in the south for a few years now.

American Muscle is the band’s second CD, and a pretty good one at that. I can hear some definite Def Leppard and Van Halen influences in the band’s tunes.

There are several great original cuts on this disc as well as a fun cover of LynyrdGlamMonth Skynyrd’s Sweet Home Alabama.

Fans of 80’s style hard rock are going to love American Muscle. There isn’t a bad song on the disc. American Muscle is filled with songs that have infectious sing along choruses, and heavy guitar riffs. This is an 80’s style glam metal CD disc that simply delivers!

This CD hasn’t left my playlist since I picked up! This CD reminds of an era where music was supposed to be fun. The Velcro Pygmies may not be original, but they most certainly do 80’s style hard rock right! I think most hard rock fans are going to love this disc.

You can check the band out at their myspace page here. You can buy their CD’s at most FYE locations.

The band also has a brand new website, VelcroPygmies.com. Go check them out, you will be glad you did!

I will give them credit for trying to put their own spin on the cover, but I still find the trouble to be they need to have a unique voice in order for that spin to be natural.

As far as rock coming back, I don’t think it’s ever gone anywhere. If you mean that style over substance party rock is coming back, it may, but I doubt we’ll see a real resurgence of the very same thing that was big in the 80s. There may be some retro spin on it just as there’s a lot of bands out there now putting their two cents into garage rock or new wave, but for the most part it isn’t just a regurgitation, but a re-interpretation. These guys are just trying to mimic the past and I don’t see how that matters.

And…from that video….it really looks like the good folks of Louisville, Kentucky also like what they are doing!

I think if people embrace the 80’s style of hard rock the way they do, they will likely get a kick out of this record. There isn’t anything unique about it, but it is pretty good. I liked the Sweet Home Alabama cover as it wasn’t an exact duplicate of the original.

So few bands try to do anything unique with a cover tune, at least the Pygmies tried to change it up a little bit.

Oh yeah, I like the name. It’s kinda goofy, but it has a ring to it.

I checked them out on myspace and there’s nothing terrible about them, but I’m not sure why anyone would bother with them when they just play to the past. It’s not influenced by 80s hard rock, it is 80s hard rock even if it’s played now. They do play with some energy, but their “Sweet Home Alabama” cover is terrible. They try to do the right thing by putting their own stamp on it, but not truly having their own voice, the effort seems forced and robs the song of its nature without providing a new one to take its place.
