Dirty Penny – Take it Sleezy (Released – 2007)
With so much great sleazy glam rock coming out of Sweden it’s a pleasant change to find something like this coming from the US. I’m not sure where to start with this delicious sleazy offering from Californian band, Dirty Penny. If I compiled a list of my top CDs for 2007 this would be high at the top of that list.
Think Crashdiet leaning more towards the dirty side of sleaze.
Things start off in suitably suggestive style with the first track “Midnight Ride” and follow with tunes that are all perfect slabs of glam rock just the way it should be. At first I thought “Black n’ Blue” was a bit out of place on this, it’s almost jazz rock n’ roll but even that fits. “Vendetta” is probably the cream of the crop. Hell, all of these songs are gems. The disc closes with an acoustic version of Sleeze Disease. It’s a fantastic rendition and sounds like a completely different song to the heavier version.
Binge Daniels has a voice made for this type of music, the backing vocals are massive and the hooks huge.
If you are looking for lyrics that resemble complex rocket science, you won’t find it here. The lyrics are simple and sometimes cheesy, (“Take a Bite” being a classic example of this) but perfect for what this music is about. “Scream and Shout” may be the exception to the cliché lyrics that the rest of the tunes have; but this kind of rock is meant to be mindless, sexy and fun and Dirty Penny deliver exactly that.
Although nothing is perfect, I can’t find a filler or dud song on this. This is worth every Dirty Penny you have and simply a must have for sleaze rock lovers. Absolutely killer.
