The Deadthings – Dead Over Heels

deadthAustralian band, The Deadthings proclaim themselves to be Australia’s No. 1 glam band. If their look is anything to go by they are off to a good start! There is no doubt these guys have a fantastic image and style that we glam fans appreciate. They look dynamite, complete with lots of hairspray and ghoulish makeup.

‘Dead Over Heels’ follows on from their previous albums ‘When Hell Sleazes Over’ and ‘Who Killed Holly Would’ – you just have to love the titles to these – and the song monikers are similarly inventive and death related. Lyrically they are very refreshing and clever. Lyrics full of blood, death, sex all done tongue in cheek style. While their previous releases were quite punk influenced, ‘Dead Over Heels’ is going in a more 80s sleazy hair metal direction.

Stand out tracks: ‘Christine’s Curse’ complete with a spooky sounding start. ‘Devil with an Angel’s Kiss’ is pure glam metal and sure to be a crowd pleaser. ‘Crimson Rain’, another fantastic song title and again this has killer metaphoric lyrics. The Real Life cover of ‘Send me an Angel’ is a rocky and good rendition, although the backing vocals could use a bit more punch. This music is like Tigertailz meets Black ‘N Blue.

My only complaint is that this album really doesn’t do The Deadthings justice and that is because of the poor quality of the production. It sounds thin and sometimes tinny. I’d love to hear these great songs with bigger backing, a heavier production style and some polish. It would turn a good release into something great.

The Deadthings have built a strong live following and have had rave reviews about their live performance by putting on a highly visual show that not only sounds good, is fun to watch. Be sure to check them out if get the chance. A band with great potential and one to keep an eye on.

I think they’re great! I have seen them about 3 times, and i will continue to support them. I absolutley love watching them. It’s fun and their stage presence is great – nice charasmatic guys. Pretty sexy too i must say!

haha Bob! yeah it’s had mixed reviews, people either think its crap or like it – obviously I like it, I just dont think the sound production does them justice

I checked out the four songs on their myspace page and all I can say is…terrible. “Christinbe’s Curse” sounds like bad musicians who listen to too much Journey. “Devil With an Angel” has the creative force of Poison (none) without any of their sense of fun. Their cover of Real Life’s “Send Me an Angel” is surely the worst of the many covers I’ve heard of that song. It completely loses its otherworldly nature and replaces it with…nothing. It’s just terrible. “Another Nail in the Coffin” was by far the best song and it provided no value whatsoever, merely rehashing the edgier 80s hair metal. At least it reminds of the days before the whole genre imploded on itself. Yuck.
