Tesla – Mechanical Resonance (Release Year – 1986)
One of my favorite CD’s of all time is Tesla’s Mechanical Resonance. I remember the fateful day I picked the cassette (Remember those?) of Mechanical Resonance up, the day this was released. I got it from the now defunct Record and Tape Outlet (RTO) store. Once listen later, I was calling all of my friends, telling them that they needed to pick this one up pronto.
This disc was released when the whole glam metal scene was about to peak. Tesla often gets lumped together with many of the other bands in the hair metal era. I don’t think Geffen Records knew what to do with Tesla at the time, and were wrongly catagorized as a hair metal band.
Tesla was a never a band about hair spray, and glam clothes and makeup. They were,
and still are about great hard rock music. Mechanical Resonance is the band’s first offering into the rock world, and it is a damn good one. Twenty two years later and Mechanical Resonance always finds itself at the top of my play list.
Going over the track list, I can’t find one song, that I do not enjoy. Jeff Keith’s vocals always put a smile on my face. Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch are easily one of the best guitar tandems to come out of the 1980’s.
I have been fortunate enough to see this band perform these songs live several times, and I haven’t ever been disappointed. Mechanical Resonance is simply an incredible piece of rock, that no fan should be without.

Amen Vic!
Teslas debut cd is better for one major reason. A song like (the above live youtube clip) Cumin at you live is timeless. It’s like a melding of a bit of metallica, rush and 80s rock in one song, and thats just one of the tons of great tracks on it. Heavy and rude, but also progressive and melodic in composition, not just more pop metal or pop rock. Diversity in songwriting is Tesla’s strength, most band lack this (in many genras of music) True, The Crue’s Shout is totally classic and has a heaviness that’s hard to top. But they lack the “depth” Tesla always has possesed. I challenge anyone reading this who hasn’t to pick up psychotic supper and listen to the first 5 tracks and the song what you give Even though “home sweet home” was a great ballad. What you give is better also and they wrote that in 91 when many 80s bands had faded..this is why they are enjoying such a loyal following still in 2008. Who else is from 1988??..lata…Vic
Mechanical Resonance is one of those albuns you wish you had written (if you’re a musician). It’s pretty damn close to perfection to me.
We prefer vodka……
No, Bob doesn’t think one should be rated higher than Shout. I understand and respect his opinion. I just like this CD better.
how did the Crue come into a Tesla review? Both great albums but I’m not seeing why Bob is comparing them… or did I miss something previously posted 😛
Thing is Bob…that is how YOU would review it…not I. You see, as much as I am a Motley Crue fan, I enjoy Tesla’s music more. Why?
Listen to Shout at the Devil, then listen to Mechanical Resonance.
Tell me which one sounds out of place in 2008. One of them is timeless, and one of them is not.
I will take Mechanical Resonance over Shout at the Devil. Is it better to me? Yes. I am sure a lot of people would disagree with me, and that is fine. 7 out of 10…..no chance.
I can understand liking it more, but is it better? I don’t think so and to me a review has to address more than just preference. I like Mechanical Resonance too, but I’d probably give it a 7/10. It’s not nearly the standout that SATD is.
Based on how much I have listened to the two albums, yes. I have listened to Mechanical Resonance more. I love Shout at the Devil too, but I like this album more.
So, you think this is a better album than Shout at the Devil?
