Asphalt Valentine returned to the Deadwood Saloon last Thursday night. The band played here back in January, but singer Joe Flynt was ill, and his vocals were inaudible at that show. (You can read about that show here.) The band promised to return, and to rock the Deadwood Saloon on their trip back.
I can happily say, they made good on their promise. The band played a tight set of tunes from their up and coming CD, Strip Rock Roll that will soon to be released by Chavis Records. The set included the following tunes:
Down To the Aces, Motorcade, Hard Life, It’s Not Me, Dirty Little Secret, Don’t Come Easy, Love & Gone, Love Story, Strip Rock Roll, Never Lose It, Be Your Drug, and Bombshell
The band was in good form, and I was surprised at how much singer, Joe Flynt sounded like a young Vince Neil at times. Asphalt Valentine has a bunch of cool hard edged tunes at their disposal, and the Deadwood Saloon provided a perfect intimate setting to check them out for the first time. I expect once the new album is released, Asphalt Valentine will not be playing in small clubs for much longer.
Be sure to catch one of their live shows coming up soon! The band will also be playing Saturday evening at Rocklahoma 2008! For more information, go check out Asphalt Valentine’s myspace page!

The Voodoo Jets Mourn the loss of Drummer John Fowler
Outstanding Talent Played With Steelheart, SMOKE, Others…
John Fowler: Nov. 21st, 1965-March 21st, 2008
Sleaze Roxx just received the following statement regarding the sudden passing of drummer John Fowler.
The Voodoo Jets (www. thevoodoojets. com), have joined friends and family in mourning the loss of standout drummer, dear friend, and loving father John Fowler . Fowler, who gained notoriety for touring and recording with the band Steelheart, with the 1990 hit song “I’ll Never Let You Go” (Angel Eyes), also dedicated himself to projects such as The Voodoo Jets, SMOKE, and Hipnotic. Fowler also instructed hundreds of drum students in the southern Connecticut region.
Fowler had been on life support in a Connecticut hospital after suffering a brain aneurism last Monday. John’s beloved son Sebastian along with close friends and family shared his final moments bedside while blasting The Voodoo Jets track “Spaceman” in the hospital’s ICU. Funeral and burial ceremonies will be held in the coming days.

’80s hard rock queen Lita Ford has signed a deal with Coallier Entertainment, the New York-based company whose list of clients include such artists as TWISTED SISTER and SEBASTIAN BACH.
In a statement released to BLABBERMOUTH.NET today by Lita Ford regarding her comeback performance in July, she had this to say: “It’s been way too long since I’ve rocked a crowd. Broke out my axe and turned it up loud. Always in my heart — forever in my soul. On July 11th I’m gonna rock ‘n’ roll. At Rocklahoma I’ll hit the stage with thousands of you maniacs. Close My Eyes — Kiss Me Deadly — can’t forget the leather pants!”
Rocklahoma festival will be held July 10-13, 2008 at the Catch The Fever Festival Grounds, four miles north of Pryor, Oklahoma. TRIUMPH and EXTREME are among the bands reuniting with all or most of their original lineups for this year’s festival, which will also feature sets from NIGHT RANGER, CINDERELLA, Bret Michaels, TESLA, ARMORED SAINT, L.A. GUNS and many more. More than 85 bands in all will perform on three giant stages throughout the four days with several more big names to be added in the coming weeks.
Jay Jay French wants to rock. He also wants Barack.
So the guitarist from the heavy metal band Twisted Sister had re-recorded the band’s anthem “I Wanna Rock,” which has now become “I Want Barack.”
French, a lifelong liberal Democrat whose mother campaigned for John F. Kennedy, says Obama has energized an entire new generation of voters who previously felt left out of politics.
“He has excited so many people,” said French, who founded Twisted Sister in 1973. “He has given sincere hope to people who have been out of the arena for years.”
French plays guitar on the track, which features Paulie Z., the singer for the band Z02, on vocals and lead guitar. They call the band “Jay Jay French and Friends” and stress that it is not a Twisted Sister project; that band’s members are split on who to support in the election.
The Obama camp had no immediate comment on the song.
It’s not the first ode to Obama from the rock world. Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am has recorded and released two music videos extolling the virtues of Obama, “Yes We Can,” a viral sensation that has garnered more than 5 million hits on YouTube.com, and the more recent “We Are The Ones.”
French said an accompanying video will soon be released on YouTube, and hopes the song will someday be played at Obama rallies, where Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed And Delivered” currently reigns.

Sweden’s Engel has released a new video, Casket Closing in support of their new CD, Absolute Design, which is available now!
Way back in 1989, I picked up a copy of Vain’s debut, No Respect on cassette. I recollect not caring for this release very much back then. This was one of the many tapes that was stolen out of my car back in the 80’s, and I never replaced it. The recent announcement of VAIN on the bill at Rocklahoma, had me scurrying to find a new copy of No Respect. This disc was out of print for a while, but it was reissued by Gott Discs in 2004.
I hoped my opinion would change the second time around for this disc, and you know what, it has! No Respect is a lot better than I remember it to be.
Davy Vain‘s vocal style is kind of like a whiny Phil Lewis, but it grows on you, and is different enough to give this disc some appeal. There is no question, that VAIN rooted themselves in the Glam Metal scene. One look at their picture (below) and you can easily tell what era of rock they came from. The cool thing about VAIN, is they really don’t sound much like peers from the hair metal era.
The music is a lot more raw, and less pop than many of the bands of the late 80’s and early 90’s. I would guess that Danny West is influenced by Joe Satriani based on some of his guitar licks on this album. (Listen to his playing in the video Beat the Bullet and you will see what I mean.) The guitar work on this record is quite good, and I have found the songs to be much more to my liking in 2008.
Thanks to Rocklahoma, I am happy to have added this disc back to my collection. I am going to be playing this CD a lot in the coming weeks. If you haven’t ever listened to VAIN before, be sure to check out the videos below. You may find yourself wanting to add this highly under rated disc to your own collection.

Panram’s sophomore release, RATS is certainly one of the more rare discs in my collection.
This German metal band sounds like a mixture of Queensryche, Crimson Glory and a little bit of Metal Church all rolled into one band.
Guitarist Ricci Tessalla plays like a madman on this record. His excellent guitar work is a reason to pick up this record all by itself. The instrumental track Break One makes me wonder why I haven’t heard this guitar virtuoso before.
Singer Jack Steen has very good vocal range, but not even a great singer can save average sounding songs, and the song writing on Rats is definitely lacking. When playing through this disc, I keep waiting for a stand out song, and the best moment I can find is the instrumental, Break One. Pack Bites the Last would have to be second. Sadly enough, after spinning this one a couple of times, the band comes across as a second hand Queensryche.
The bottom line is Panram may be one of the more obscure acts of the 90’s and Rats won’t do anything to change that. If you are interested, you can find cheap copies of this disc on Ebay. I have included the song Pack Bites the Last below so you can experience Panram for yourself.

If Thrash Metal is your thing, Ultimatum has released a record that you must seek out!
Ultimatum is a Christian thrash metal band that has been around since 1992. Don’t let the Christian thing fool you! This is 100% pure heavy metal.
Into the Pit features the razor sharp vocals of Scott Waters. His style may not be for everyone, but extreme metal fans are likely going to love this. His style is almost Death Metal like, but unlike many singers who fall into the cookie monster trap, you can understand the lyrics. At times, Waters often reminds me of Mike Muir from Suicidal Tendencies. Often Into the Pit is a heavy record, that compares sonically to 80’s thrash metal. Fans of bands like Overkill, Testament and some early Metallica, may find something to sink their teeth into here.
On Into the Pit, the guitars are fierce, the lyrics and vocals are intense, and the drum beats are driving and sometimes insanely fast.
I don’t recall any recent albums of this style being this good. Retroactive Records has found one hell of a band with Ultimatum. My favorite cuts on this disc are Heart of Metal, Into the Pit and Game Over. This isn’t usually the style of music that I listen to on a regular basis, but when I want to hear some new thrash metal, I will be grabbing for Ultimatum’s Into The Pit.
Buy Into the Pit and Play it Loud! For more information on Ultimatum, check out their myspace page.

MÖTLEY CRÜE is rumored to be teaming up with several other acts from the Tenth Street Entertainment management stable — BUCKCHERRY, PAPA ROACH and DROWNING POOL — for a U.S. tour that will kick off in early July. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the trek will go out under the moniker Cruefest — which is not to be confused with the association that organizes concerts at various locations around the world throughout the year to raise money for the various CRÜE-affiliated charities (including Skylar Neil Memorial Fund, Nikki Sixx‘s Running Wild in the Night foundation, Tommy Lee‘s charity of choice St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Mick Mars‘ charity Spondylitis Association of America).
CRÜE will officially announce its touring plans on April 15th in Los Angeles, according to a press release. All four members of the group will be present at a location yet to be determined for what the release hyped as “by far…one of the biggest music announcements of the year!!” The band is also launching a contest in which one grand prize winner from each major city in the country will be flown to Los Angeles to cover the announcement, complete with a chance to interview the band and have the interview broadcast live. Details can be found at the official CRÜE site.
The band is currently working on its ninth studio album and first featuring all four original members since 1997’s “Generation Swine”. Bassist Nikki Sixx said in an online posting, “Tommy‘s (Lee, drums) kickin’ ass, Vince (Neil, vocals) sounds insane and (Mick) Mars is shredding on guitars. It doesn’t feel like one song is better or worse than any other. It feels so good to be excited about something you’ve worked on so hard…I’m so excited for you all to hear it.”
The album, titled “The Dirt” after the group’s memoir of the same name, is tentatively due out on July 8.

Frontiers Records is proud to announce the European release of the brand new KIP WINGER album entitled “From the Moon To The Sun” on May 9th 2008.
Eight years after the release of the acclaimed “Songs From the Ocean Floor”, a record which was labelled as “Masterpiece” by several music critics around the work and a successful reunion of the band Winger, Kip Winger returns with a true career defining statement and, once again, another cd which witnesses the creative evolution of the American composer.
“I am an artist that will continue to push the envelope into the direction that my ear and abilities are taking me, with no compromise”, says Kip, adding “I worked hard to make this record my best yet. For sure it is musically very diverse… Hence the title , “From the Moon to the Sun“.
The music offered on the record is truly a flow that has no boundaries, from the fresh rock approach of songs like “Every Story Told”, “Nothing” or “Reason To Believe”, to the Pop sensibilities of “Where Will You Go” and “California”, to the acoustic mood of “Pages and Pages” and “In Your Eyes Another Life”, down to the unbelievable instrumental piece “Ghosts”, “From the Moon to the Sun” brings the listener to a journey in a kaleidoscope of different moods.
The album sees also musical contributions from Rod Morgenstein and Ken Mary on drums, Andy Timmons and Rob Eberhard Young on guitar, Alan Pasqua on piano, Cenk Eroglu on songwriting, keyboards and guitars.
Tracklisting of the European edition of “From the Moon To The Sun” will include:
Every Story Told; Nothing; Where Will You Go; Pages and Pages; Ghosts; In Your Eyes Another Life; Runaway; California; What We Are; One Big Game; Why; Reason To Believe; Monster (exclusive Bonus Track for Europe, a newly recorded version of the song originally included on “Thisconversationseemslikeadream”).

The folks at Metal Mind have reissued a classic NWOBHM disc that is one that metal fans will certainly need to check out.
If you haven’t heard of Diamond Head before, what you should know is this is the band that heavily influenced the likes of Metallica, Megadeth, and several more hard rock and metal acts over the years.
Metallica has covered a few of their songs over the years, including their massive anthem, Am I Evil? The amazing thing about Diamond Head, is how so many thrash acts were influenced by this group, that is grounded more in early heavy metal, than anything remotely close to thrash. Diamond Head’s style reminds me a whole lot of the American (and very under rated) band Riot, whose popularity was growing at the same time.
The guitar tone on In The Heat of the Night reminds me a great deal of early Def Leppard. This song seems to get better with every listen.
To Heaven from Hell starts off mid-tempo and seems to be a fairly average tune, then about mid way through goes through a time change that cranks the speed and the guitar solos up to ten! This song will have you breaking out the air guitar for sure.
Call Me is a balladesque tune that mains a raw but heavy feel. This is another cool tune that continues to grow on me.
Lightning to the Nations is another raw rocker that has a Def Leppard meets Iron Maiden style about it.
The title track Borrowed Time is easily my favorite song on this disc. Lots of guitar solos, and good sing along style of lyrics can be found in this classic tune.
Don’t You Ever Leave Me is probably my least favorite song on this record. This song tends to linger on, as it clocks in at close to eight minutes. The guitar work is solid. In fact, the guitar solos are the best part of the song. I think a shorter song would have worked better here. It is a nice jam session, and I can see how many acts tried to emulate the guitar tones here.
Am I Evil? needs on introduction. Metallica made this song famous. The Diamond Head is not as heavy as the Metallica version, but it is every bit as good, just a little different from that version.
The CD was previously unavailable in the United States, and this limited edition (2000 copies) reissue is certainly one worth grabbing, before they are all gone!
This reissue comes with six bonus tracks, and a 13 minute interview to close the CD. Most of the bonus tracks are live cuts. They are a nice addition, and only add to the listening experience Borrowed Time brings.
Borrowed Time is like opening up a hard rock time capsule. It is a very influential piece of music on many of the 80’s bigger metal acts. It is an interesting and very good hard record that is worth discovering again in 2008! You can get a copy of this disc here!

JORN LANDE: New Audio Interview Available – Mar. 17, 2008
TheRightToRock. com has issued its latest podcast (episode #49), featuring vocalist former MASTERPLAN vocalist Jorn Lande (who is performing/recording under the name JORN).
The interview lasts approximately 50 minutes and can be heard at this location .
Jorn Lande has set “Lonely Are the Brave” as the title of his new solo album, tentatively due in early June via Frontiers Records. The CD was mixed at Tommy Hansen’s Jailhouse Studio in Denmark.
Jorn Lande is one of the guests on “The Scarecrow”, the third installment of EDGUY frontman Tobias Sammet’s AVANTASIA solo project. The album was produced by Sascha Paeth, who also played the rhythm guitar on the CD. The drums were laid down by KISS/ALICE COOPER drummer Eric Singer and the bass was handled by Tobias himself.
Daniel MacMaster, who released two albums with Bonham, died suddenly last night. As Bonham’s vocalist, Daniel reached the Top 40 with the band’s 1989 album Disregard Of Timekeeping, thanks in part to the single “Wait For You”. In 2006 Daniel released a solo album called Rock Bonham…And The Long Road Back on Suncity Records. Daniel’s bandmate in Monkey-MacMaster, Jimmy D, posted the following today:
With a heavy heart I am sad to say that last night my dear friend Daniel passed away.
Daniel and I started working together in early 2005. We found a writing chemistry and friendship like no other…in the world we loved called music. Now at this moment, it’s hard to believe he is gone. We spoke weekly, holidays, birthday’s…always, and I will miss the short time we had together. The writing, the jokes, and the stories. In my eyes he was an extremely talented musician. He taught me so much that I was lacking as a songwriter, and now there will be a void. Knowing now that our plans for releasing music performing together this year will never come to pass, saddens me beyond belief. He and I had our heart set on getting MONKEY-MACMASTER and his solo effort “out to the masses”, as he put it.
My heart and prayers go out for his family through this difficult time.
I will miss you brotha. Forever your dear friend,

If you have read music reviews at Hard Rock Hideout, you know we give praise where it is due. Black Tide deserves a bunch for this release.
Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to hear a release of this quality from a bunch of teenagers. The young men in Black Tide have released one hell of a new metal disc. This is a disc that will easily compete for top record of the year.
Light From Above has a distinct 80’s style metal to it, but this disc has a heavier edge which will give it mass appeal. Some of the writing on this record reminds me of mid 80’s Def Leppard, but the guitar work is much heavier than that.
Chances are you have already heard the track Shockwave that was released on the band’s 2 song EP. While this is a solid cut, it is far from the best song on this record. This record seems to get better as it progresses.
Black Tide’s cover of Metallica’s Hit the Lights is a nice surprise, and this version ought to put a smile on a lot of faces, including that of James Hetfield.
Black Tide’s new disc hits stores tomorrow. If you want to hear a record with plenty of cool guitar solos, head banging drums, and great vocals, go get your copy of Light From Above, and don’t forget to put your chiropractor on speed dial!
