4 Chavis Records Signs The Bulletboys!

  • April 30, 2008
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

Chavis Records has announced the signing of the BULLETBOYS to the label for their new worldwide release. The band is currently in the studio finishing the final recordings before heading to the mixing and mastering phase. The project is being recorded at El Garaje Studios in Cape Coral, FL.

Singer Marq Torien comments – “I am extremely excited about signing with a label that really understands what I am about and that my talent still perseveres. This is extremely rare in the business these days.”

The Bulletboys will be heading out on the road this summer in support of their new release with major tour announcements to be released in the very near future. Checkout the new track ‘Road To Nowhere’ here.

HRH Note: Hmmm could this be the Foo Fighters tour that Marq Torien mentioned in Cincinnati?!

3 Theory of a Deadman – Scars & Souvenirs (Release Year – 2008)

Theory of a Deadman got their first break, when Chad Kroeger from Nickelback signed the band to his label, 604 Records. Scars & Souvenirs is the bands’ third release, but the first one that I have picked up.

Two things made me pick up Scars & Souvenirs. The song So Happy has gotten a lot of airplay on our local radio station, 96 Rock. The band is also the headliner of a concert, that Airbourne is opening up for tomorrow night.

I don’t recall hearing T.O.A.D.’s tunes prior to this record, and I can hear a definite similarity between their music, and Nickelbacks’ tunes. If you don’t like the latter band, you probably won’t enjoy T.O.A.D.’s music either. For those of you that do, you are going to find quite a few songs to enjoy on Scars & Souvenirs. There are at least 4 or 5 songs that could be singles on this record, if not more. I prefer the harder numbers on this record, therefore the songs, So Happy, Crutch, Bad Girlfriend and Little Smirk are my current favorites. I also like the tunes, All or Nothing and Heaven, both of which are balladesque tunes that could be massive hits for T.O.A.D.

Theory of a Deadman has two platinum albums in Canada, and without a doubt, this will be their third. Will this be their first platinum album in the U.S.? With the right amount of support, it just might. Theory of a Deadman has put together a very solid modern rock album that should have mass appeal. Scars & Souvenirs was a nice surprise, and worth picking up for fans of bands like Hinder, Nickelback and Daughtry.

For more information on Theory of a Deadman, please visit their website. Road Runner Records are also giving away a free download of the band’s first sing So Happy. Just right click and save the file and enjoy!

Some of you may know the band Pink Cream 69, but many of you do not.

This German hard rock band was founded by Andi Deris, Dennis Ward, Alfred Koffler, and Kosta Zafiriou.

Andi Deris left Pink Cream 69 in 1994 to join Helloween, and David Readman took over the lead vocal spot.

The band has released 11 CD’s since 1989. Three with Deris, and 8 with David Readman. If you are a fan of 80’s style hard rock, there is a lot of great music to explore.

A lot of bands suffer when they change singers, but Pink Cream 69, has only gotten better and stronger, with David Readman.

Pink Cream 69 isn’t well known in the United States, but they should be. These guys still rock like it is 1989. If you are a fan of 80’s style hard rock or glam metal, you need to give Pink Cream 69 a look. They have eleven studio albums, most of which are available through Amazon.com. The videos below will give you a taste of their music. Check them out!!

Rock star Scott Weiland has just been sentenced to 192 hours in county jail for his November DUI arrest. This is Weiland’s second DUI offense. He has until May 28 to serve the sentence.

Scott, who was not present in court today, entered a no contest plea through his attorney, Anthony Brooklier. The former Velvet Revolver singer was also ordered to complete an 18-month alcohol program and pay almost $2,000 in fines. He will be put on a four-year summary probation.

Weiland was charged with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol with a prior conviction, and with an allegation that he refused a chemical test as required by law. We are told he was over the legal limit of .08%, but not by much.

According to the police report, he failed the field sobriety tests and refused to take a blood or urine test. He was booked for DUI and released on $40,000 bail.

3 Jorn Lande to Tour With Avantasia

  • April 28, 2008
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

EDGUY singer Tobias Sammet has issued the following update on his AVANTASIA solo project:

“I’d like to take the opportunity to thank you for your great support. ‘The Scarecrow’ is an album that means a lot to me and it was quite a commercial risk to just follow my heart instead of doing exactly what people expected. But if I take a look at the chart positions and sales — it went into the album charts in 16 countries, hitting the Top10 in four countries — it seems like you appreciate my honesty! Thank you!

Now preparing for the festival summer with AVANTASIA seems so surreal. AVANTASIA has never been on stage before and all of the sudden we are headlining the biggest festivals in the world, just been confirmed for the Sziget festival in Hungary on the 13th of August, playing amongst legendary bands such as R.E.M., DIE ÄRZTE, IRON MAIDEN and the SEX PISTOLS. Amazing!

“The AVANTASIA line up will be Jorn Lande (ex-MASTERPLAN), André Matos (ex-ANGRA), Amanda Somerville, Olli Hartmann, Bob Catley (MAGNUM — not all shows), Sascha Paeth, Miro, Robert Hunecke, Claudy Yang and Frank Lindenthal who is gonna replace Eric Singer who’ll be playing with KISS. Despite all rumors Michael Kiske will not be there, as he didn’t wanna do it and I respect that! We’ll put on a huge epic show anyway. Nobody has done something like that before and I swear, nobody will ever forget the event, neither you nor us!!!”

31 Def Leppard – Songs From the Sparkle Lounge (2008)

  • April 28, 2008
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · CD Reviews A-H · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Music

Def Leppard hasn’t been known for hard rock in over two decades. The band moved more towards a pop rock sound ages ago. Fans have been longing for the band to return to the sound that made them famous in the early 80’s. Songs From the Sparkle Lounge isn’t a Pyromania or Hysteria part two, but this album does have some of the heaviest tracks that the band has done in quite a while. The songwriting on this record took a more simplistic approach. Most cuts on Songs From the Sparkle Lounge have an anthemic quality about it. As a result, the lyrics are easy to remember, easy to sing along with, and the band could have their first hit record with new material since 1993’s Retroactive. Yes, the band has had Gold Albums since then, but none of their releases, aside from their Greatest hit compilations, have sold more than a million copies since 1993’s Retroactive.

Those of you fearing that Def Leppard is going to tread down the road that Bon Jovi went down, I can gladly say, they did not. This album has a couple of heavy cuts. Just listen to the first track Go, and you will understand how much of a difference the sound is over the past few records. This is the first album where I have heard Vivian Campbell cut loose on a Def Leppard album, and all I can say is, ITS ABOUT TIME! The band has not jettisoned their pop rock sound on this disc, so the fans of the NWOBHM Def Leppard albums, probably won’t enjoy this record as much. Those of you looking for a disc full of good pop songs, will probably be quite happy with this disc. Songs from the Sparkle Lounge probably has more in common with Adrenalize than any of Def Leppard’s prior work.

Yes, Tim McGraw sings the intro on Nine Lives. His involvement with the song adds absolutely nothing to the song or the record. It is easily a quick marketing grab for Def Leppard, who could draw a few fans from the music buying Country Music audience. Either way it is probably a smart move for the band, especially when most bands are struggling to sell records in 2008.

Like most Def Leppard albums, Songs From the Sparkle Lounge has a power ballad, called Love. This song has more syrup than IHOP. This song has a center part that gives it a Queen like feel to it.

So far my favorite cuts are Go, Cruise Control, Hallucinate and Bad Actress.

Songs From the Sparkle Lounge isn’t a terribly long affair. It clocks in just shy of 40 minutes. This isn’t Def Leppard’s best work, but it is far from their worst. Will this new album be enough to garner new success for Def Leppard? It just might. I had low expectations for this record, and as a result I enjoyed it. I think most of you will too.

You can listen to samples of this album at the Sparkle Lounge Micro site.

1 Jetboy – The Glam Years (Release Year – 2007)

  • April 26, 2008
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Hard Rock Videos · Music · Rocklahoma Reviews · Video

In 2007, the reunited Jetboy released an excellent CD/DVD Compilation, simply titled, The Glam Years.

Jetboy is one the more unappreciated bands of the 80’s hard rock/glam metal era. The CD gives you 21 tracks of hard rocking goodness, that is more of a best of package than it is demos. A couple of the songs are of demo quality, especially On The Lips, but the rest sound like finished versions.

This CD, also includes Jetboy’s killer cover of Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues!

The CD has the best cuts off of Jetboy’s five previously released CD’s Feel the Shake, Damned Nation, Day In the Glamour Life, Lost and Found, Make Some More Noise, One More For Rock and Roll.

This 2 disc package is priced to sell (under 15 dollars at most line retailers) and is worth the money for the CD alone. If you don’t own Jetboy’s out of print discs, Feel the Shake and Damned Nation already, this is the perfect way to reacquire some of the tunes from those records.

The DVD covers a live show the band did at the Whiskey A Go-Go in 1986. The video quality isn’t much to speak of, but it does do a good job of catching Jetboy in their prime. I enjoyed the live show on the DVD, as well as the tunes in this collection. I definitely recommend this to fans of 80’s glam metal.

4 Alcatrazz – No Parole From Rock ‘N’ Roll (1983)

  • April 25, 2008
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · CD Reviews A-H · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock Videos · Music · Rare Rock Rewind · Video

2008 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Alcatrazz debut album, No Parole From Rock ‘N’ Roll.

This disc features the vocal talents of former Rainbow and MSG singer, Graham Bonnet, and none other than Yngwie Malmsteen on Guitar.

Alcatrazz had a fair amount of success in Japan, and even with a solid amount of airplay on MTV, with their video for Island In the Sun, the band did not much success in the United States.

Malmsteen’s neo classical style of guitar playing is present on this record, but not as overbearing as it is on his solo releases. I am guessing that the music on No Parole From Rock ‘N’ Roll is influenced by Bonnet’s early work in Rainbow, as there are a few similar elements, especially with the 70’s style keyboards of former New Englander Jimmy Waldo.

Yngwie Malmsteen’s awesome guitar playing is takes this record to the next level. Without his guitar work, I doubt that I would have cared much about the songs on this record, but his amazing fret work is always something that I enjoy hearing, especially with his varied styles from song to song this disc.

Sadly, this disc has been out of print in the United States for a long time now. You can still find import copies, but the high prices on those will scare away most hard rock fans. No Parole For Rock ‘N’ Roll is definitely a must own disc for Malmsteen fans everywhere.

1 Stereoside – So Long (Release Year – 2007)

In 2007, the four hard rocking guys that make up the band, Stereoside, signed with Bieler Brothers records.

Singer Jeff Shields is the former Tallahassee Idol winner. He has rejected many major label offers to sing country music, and joined Stereoside in 2006.

What does Stereoside sound like? Their modern rock sound mimics that of a couple of the better selling acts of late, Hinder, Daughtry and maybe a dash of Alter Bridge.

The CD, So Long is full of radio ready rockers, many of which could easily be hits, especially if Clear Channel allows their stations to play this record.

When singer Jeff Shields voice isn’t over powered by the music, his vocals shine. At times his voice reminds me of another singer that I am fond of, Johnny Gioeli from Axel Rudi Pell.

So Long is armed with a bunch of good songs, including, Sinner, Tattoo, Wasted and My Life. Sinner could be a massive hit for Stereoside. The tune Tattoo is very catchy and requires multiple plays. Wasted has a crazy amount of radio potential. There really isn’t a bad song in the lot.

Hopefully, Stereoside isn’t a band that gets lost in the mix. Their sound may not be original enough to get them the recognition they deserve. Jeff Shields is a big talent, and this disc needs to be heard by all.
