People..quit being so critical. I mean ok the album isn’t going to be British Steel or Screaming For Vengeance but how many albums are! I mean their the metal gods. Just to last 40 years and still be able to put out an album and throw a kick as show makes them the metal gods.

Angel of Retribution came out of nowhere for me, best album since Screaming for Vengeance, IMO… (Loch Ness, notwithstanding).

This really does sound like a Spinal Tap outtake, though…. Halford claimed that a lot of his lyrics were meant to be a ‘joke on the straight community’ in an interview in the Stranger a few years back (You don’t want to know what ‘Jawbreaker’ is really about… trust me).

Maybe this another joke on the fans? Dude’s got a strange sense of humor, to be sure.

Anyway, looking forward to Iron Maiden’s Bigfoot concept album next year….!

If you dont like it, don’t listen! We have only heard the one track. I’ll buy it to check it out.( I relize Taco Bell only pays minimum wage, but hopfully you can barrow some money from your wife to get the CD.) I do admit it sounds a little like “rock oprea”, so what. If you want to talk smack, turn down the Warrent CD you have blaring, and pull your head out!!! The Metal Gods have a place for you. What, you can’t hear me? Turn the Winger down and listen. We have only heard ONE song. Wait till it comes out next week before you talk trash!! Still can’t hear me? To Bad!

After hearing 2 tracks, and as suggested strings, keyboards, operatic type vocals, concept album, i have no doubt there will
a lot of light and shade on “Nostradamus”. Judging by the reviews
above it looks as though very little people are interested in
J.P.’s new beginning, and different direction musically. Obviously
the best years are behind them, but is it worth a listen. We have already heard 2 tracks, the title track and Visions, i’ll give it a go.

Paul,
No offense, but I can tell you’re in your fifties. Rocka Rolla? “Angel” being the best off A.O.R.? “Two” being relevant? Come on man, give me a break.. I think you’re lost in the past. Jason had it right… thank Priest for not slowing down.
As far as the concept metal record NEVER working… Have you listened to Queensryche’s Operation : Mindcrime or W.A.S.P.’s The Crimson Idol lately?

There seems to be a lot of nay-sayers already, which is surprising, considering there is only one song to listen to from a double CD. I agree it sounds different, but I personally give priest all the credit in the world for not getting lighter over the years. This tune sounds like cool power metal to me, the weird operatic intros are probably a given considering the content. Hail Priest! Now if only Metallica and Motley Crue’s new records can can keep to their styles, real metal just might start to rule again. Let’s hope for the best!

Not impressed at all. This could have come from Painkiller, as most of the drumming and guitar riffs seem direct lifts from that album. Couldn’t help singing “Hot Bananas” to the chorus instead of “Nostradamus”. I’ll listen to the whole album before makig a final verdict, but Bob’s right. The concept thing NEVER works for a rock band, and this pales into insignificance when put alongside Halford’s solo stuff with K5, Fight and Two. Priest’s lyrics have always been a little corny – aside from the first few good albums, Sad Wings, Sin After Sin, Stained Class, Screaming and Defenders, and since the dire Turbo release they have struggled to produce a full disc of worthy material, even with Ram It Down and Painkiller. If this is their best after 14 years then they might as well hang up their leathers, especially when Angel of Retribution’s best tracks were the ballads “Angel”, “Eulogy” and the upbeat “Worth Fighting For”. (“Judas Rising” being the only real return to Priest standards) I’ve been a fan for a long time – since I ran home from the record store with the vinyl version of Rocka Rolla clutched in my sweaty teenaged mitts. Now I’m in my fifties I’m a lot more discerning, a lot harder to please, and a lot less easily fooled. This Priest is still on its knees….

Not to crazy about the whole “concept album”, not sure why Priest thinks that this is what us fans want to hear. This album is probably some sort of rock opera, keybords too! I am a HUGE fan so I will always stick by them, but I always feel disapointed with every album they’ve been putting out since Defenders of the Faith. They seem to stick to what is a familiar sound, same with their album artwork, why can’t they write songs like from the band Fight or Halford, those are some kick-ass jams!! Any way, the Nostradamus song was pretty good, love Scott’s work, so looking forward to the new album…please no more corny lyrics!!!

Hmmm…. not sure of this one yet. It sounds like they are trying out elements of “modern” power metal which is ok… some of the riffs and melodies sound really forced though.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I like Judas Priest. They WERE a great band, but not anymore. The last album was overwrought and underrocked. I bet this one makes it look like British Steel though.

Scott Travis is a fine drummer, but not every musician fits into every situation and I never felt he fit JP cohesively. He worked out great with Halford in Fight which had more of a hardcore influenced sound, but neither he not the JP sound adjusted to each other.

As far as your prediction goes, just like Nostradamus, it will come true for those who really WANT to believe it. Of course, that doesn’t actually make it accurate.
