I saw the movie this past Saturday with my 2 boys. We all loved it and they have not stopped talking about. I was in the same boat as you Rob, I wasn't sure if Downey could play the "superhero" part, but he pulled it off wonderfully. The CGI was top notch and the supporting cast came through as well. Now I am not a Comic fanboy at all and haven't seen a movie in a theater since the last LOTR movie, but there was something about this one that I just had to see on the big screen, and I was not disappointed.

Did you happen to stay through to the end of the credits? There is a little teaser at the end.
