Hatchet – Awaiting Evil (Release Year – 2008)

Another young San Francisco band has set out to return 80’s style thrash metal to the masses.

The band has a style that blends the early metal style of Metallica and Slayer. Yes, their work is nothing unique. It sounds like the band is heavily influenced by Metallica’s early work, and I am ok with that.

Even if the music is derivative of Hatchet’s idols, it most certainly rocks, and rocks hard. Awaiting Evil offers plenty of thrash metal punch for this 80’s thrash metal fan. Julz Ramos and Sterling Bailey are solid axe men who show an amazing amount of potential. Marcus Kirchen has a look that reminds me of Ripper Owens. His voice vascillates between a strong clean metal vocal, and a coarse growly style of singing. He isn’t a cookie monster style of singer, and for that, I am grateful. I have heard enough of those type of singers to last me a lifetime.

The nine songs on Awaiting Evil clock in just shy of 42 minutes. On this record you will hear plenty of high speed drumming, tons of guitar noodling and enough solid trash metal to give you whiplash.

Metal Blade has found an excellent new band to carry on the torch for thrash metal. To hear more songs, and find more information on the band, check out the Hatchet myspace page.

Now this is what metal is supposed to be! Man, I love evertything about this album! Great production and great raw feel!

There was another thrash band called Valor in 1988 that released one album called Fight For Your Life (http://cdbaby.com/cd/valor) I swear these guys found that old tape and based their sound on it!!

Great find man! Keep it coming!
