This week on Rockline, Motley Crue premiere’s their new album, Saints of Los Angeles.
At ROCKLINE we do a bit of a balancing act sometimes. When we invite guests to join us on the show we always have you, the fan, in mind. Is the artist popular, are they interesting, do they have a good project to discuss? In other words, are they worthy of ninety minutes of valuable air time? But we also have to think like the program directors of the radio stations that carry our show. Do they fit the format of the station; are they what the PD’s want? We learned long ago that because each station varies from city to city with what they play and what they want, that we will never make everyone happy all the time. So we make the best choices we possibly can based on marquee value, airplay charts, topicality and style of music. This is why, on fortunately very rare occasions, your hometown station may not carry the live show we present on a given night and might ask for a replacement, which we are more than happy to provide. From what we are told, we do a pretty darn good job of giving everybody what they want, both fans and PD’s with amazing regularity. With two formats broadcast on two different nights, Active/Mainstream Rock and Classic Rock, we offer about ninety new shows a year and that means booking a lot of talent, representing a lot of styles and covering a lot of ground. We are acutely aware that Billy Joel and Iron Maiden (both guests this year) are about as far apart as you can get, but we are also aware that they are both undeniable superstar artists with huge catalogs of amazing songs. We feel they each deserve to be on the show.
Why are we bringing this up? Because occasionally an artist will work well on both formats and deserve to be on our entire list of close to eighty stations along with our vast Internet audience of hundreds of thousands. For 2008, this rarity will only happen four times, REM, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and our next guests, Motley Crue. Our batting average for these choices will be about .970, which has to be rated successful by anyone’s standards. Less than a handful of stations don’t like these offerings and we are good with that as we aim to please.
When it came to making the choice for Motley Crue, it was pretty much a no-brainer for us. Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee and Mick Mars are among the most enduring, recognizable figures in all of Rock and Roll and they transcend the medium with TV shows, books and other media too. Couple that with the fact that we will be presenting the national radio premiere of the forthcoming CD “Saints of Los Angeles” eight days before its release and that they are headlining one of the most anticipated tours of the year, CrueFest, and there was no doubt that this show belonged on both nights. Add in the fact that we are expecting the entire band to join us and this is far more than a radio show and becomes a full blown event with a lot of exciting angles and aspects.
This also reminds us that we need to inform you of a couple of things. First, to speak with the band, you will need to CALL ON MONDAY NIGHT JUNE 16 at 8:30pm PT / 11:30pm ET. Secondly, due to contractual obligations we are authorized to broadcast the show on June 16 and again on June 18 and then NOT STREAM the program on our website until the album is in stores on June 24. At that point, the whole show will be available for your Internet enjoyment for two full weeks, at any time you wish to listen.
That pretty much covers it. This is yet another ROCKLINE event with an exclusive album premiere, bona fide larger than life rock stars, a chance for you to help interview the band on the air and a program worthy of broadcast on two nights on two similar, yet distinctly different formats.
It’s all Rock and Roll to us. Cool.
