Portland, Maine’s By Blood Alone released their full length debut album, Seas of Blood in 2007. With a name like this, one might think this band is latest death metal act to hit the scene. As I quickly discovered, this is not the case.
By Blood Alone is a female fronted gothic metal act, led by singer Cruella. Their sound is a strong mixture of heavy guitars and celtic keyboard based rock. The music on Seas of Blood will take you on a voyage that offers quite the mixture of sounds. Each member of this band seems to be very proficient at their instrument. Although Cruella’s voice is not the strongest that I have listened to, she does add a lot of character to their sound. The keyboard melodies offer a mixture of melancholy melodies, and ethereal tones. At times, they tend to be mixed higher than the heavy guitars of John Graveside, and I think this was one of the few mistakes that the band made.
The bands’ myspace page describes their sound as progressive, gothic metal. The gothic sounds are definitely present, but I am so sure about the progressive part. I don’t think the music has the tempo, or time changes found in most of today’s progressive metal. You won’t confuse By Blood Alone with Dream Theater or Nightwish for that matter. Nonetheless, the music found here is quite good. It might take a few listens for you to fully absorb the music, as it did with me. Sea of Blood is one of the more interesting discs that I have listened to as of late.
As a whole, I think By Blood Alone has only scratched the surface of where they could take their music. The band has all of the tools to take their music to the next level. Stephen King may have put Portland, Maine on the map as far as pop culture goes, with the right producer and a little bit of luck, By Blood Alone could carry this town’s legacy well into the future.
If you would like to see what By Blood Alone is all about, check out their myspace page. You can purchase their CD, at CDBaby.com and Amazon.com.

OPM Frontman Arrested During The DIY Tour

OPM “Golden State of Mind” In Stores September 2nd, 2008 Featuring Guest Appearance By Reggae Legend Pato Baton and Members of Cypress Hill, Dumbluck
California based OPM have been turning heads all summer long performing tracks from their upcoming new album “Golden State Of Mind” as a part of the DIY Tour with (Hed)pe. The band recently caught the attention of local authorities in Saint Petersburg, FL this week when frontman JohnE Necro was arrested for criminal mischief. Authorities arrested Necro and later released him on $1,000 bail, after reports he allegedly spray painted a wall.
“I find it kind of ironic that Saint Petersburg, FL, home to the Salvador Dali museum, could be so insanely uptight about spray painting,” says Necro. “In some areas Graffiti is regarded as a form of art worthy of display in galleries and exhibitions, but obviously the state of Florida feels differently.”
California rock-reggae five piece OPM recently released the track “Tell Me What You Want” featuring Big B online at www.MySpace.com/Opm from the group’s upcoming new album “Golden State of Mind”, which will see release through Suburban Noize Records on September 2nd, 2008. The album will feature guest appearances from reggae legend Pato Baton, Cypress Hill’s Sen Dog, Jim Perkins from Dumbluck and Suburban Noize alumni Big B, DJ Product (HedPe) and Johnny Richter (Kottonmouth Kings).
“With our last record we went in a direction that down played the hip hop aspect a bit and I think that Golden State of Mind is a bit more back to our original roots of incorporating all of our influences from hip-hop, punk-rock, reggae and rock and roll, ” says frontman John E Necro. “I think with Golden State of Mind we got a good balance of what we liked about both of those records. Lots of live performances from everybody, but we still found places for the big beats to fit in. Every album you do you get to learn from the last one. I think this one is the natural progression.”
OPM’s laid back hybrid style of rock mixed with hip-hop and reggae has racked up more than 1 million units sold worldwide. Their debut album “Menace To Sobriety” stormed rock radio with the international skateboarder’s anthem, “Heaven is a Halfpipe”, which became the #1 most requested track on LA’s KROQ and won the highly acclaimed Kerrang “Single of the Year” award. Since then the band has cultivated a grass roots with the release of 2004’s underground classic “ForTheMasses” and 2006’s “California Poppy” following that has put them in league with the likes of Sublime, 311, Pepper and Slightly Stoopid.
“It’s very easy to pull for a fictitious serial killer, a Hannibal Lecter or a Jason Voorhees,” says Cooper. The album, due July 29, introduces us to Spider, who wraps his victims in silk that matches their eye colors and cuts off one of their legs to create his own arachnoid appendage. “I don’t think anyone was ever cheering for Ted Bundy or Richard Speck or anything like that, but when it’s a fictitious serial killer, you can get behind him.
“I think (Spider)’s got a romantic sense. He’s got a sense of humor. I think in the end you kind of like him. You have somebody you could actually listen to and go, ‘I like this guy…’ “
Cooper co-produced “Along Came a Spider” with Danny Saber and Greg Hampton, with the 11 tracks played by his touring band. Slash contributes guitar on “Vengeance is Mine,” while “Wake the Dead” is a co-write with Ozzy Osbourne. Listeners should brace for a plot twist that the singer calls “very Alice Cooper.”
Cooper, whose previous conceptual epics include “Welcome to My Nightmare,” “From the Inside” and “The Last Temptation,” is planning a full-fledged stage show to support “Along Came a Spider” but won’t have it on the road until 2009. “Right now I’ve got people that are drawing things up,” says Cooper, who’d also like to offer a visual treatment of the album with different horror directors creating videos for each song. “We’ve started thinking about, ‘What can we do to make this really interesting and what new things can we do with the stage?’ I gonna definitely create a new way for Alice to die, something nobody’s seen.
“A lot of clever minds out there are working on it,” he continues. “It’s weird to be working on a show for a year from now, but at the same time I can at least give myself a good head start.”
Cooper plans to play some of the new songs songs when his Psychodrama tour’s North American leg begins July 31 in Redmond, Ore.

Speed X, the new band featuring Nick Catanese (of Black Label Society) and Mike Stone (of Queensryche) has posted new music to their myspace page.
Why some great releases go out of print, makes no sense to this listener. Metal Church’s fifth CD, The Human Factor, featuring ex-Heretic vocalist, Mike Howe is easily my favorite by the band.
Mike Howe sings with an angry passion that would make Dave Mustaine proud. The song writing on this disc is way above average. Even though guitarist, Kurt Vanderhoof didn’t play on the record, he left his mark as the chief songwriter. The songs tackle the political and social issues of the day, including music, poverty, activists, censorhip, child endangerment and more. One look at the lyric sheet, and you will be amazed at the writing on this disc.
Everything on this record works for me. Great vocals, kill guitar work, an excellent rhythm section and good songs. The music is heavy but it has a killer groove, that will appeal to a lot of metal fans.
The best cuts on this record are Human Factor, Date With Poverty, Final Word, and In Harm’s Way. Even though these songs are the stand out tracks, I like ever song on this disc. In fact, I love this album every bit as much as the day when I picked it back up in 1991.
Sadly, this album is out of print, but copies of it show up on Ebay and Amazon.com from time to time. If you can find a copy of the Human Factor, grab it. You won’t be disappointed.

Sound And Fury Announce Live Dates With Less Than Jake and Airbourne
REJECT ALL THINGS POP FOR REAL, RAMPAGING, ROCK ON
DEBUT ALBUM, “SOUND AND FURY” OUT NOW!
Toronto’s high powered rock n’ roll powerhouse Sound & Fury have announced more dates with Australian rockers Airbourne, including a full European tour that will make stops in the UK, France Germany and Sweden. The announcement comes on the heels of the release of the band’s self-titled debut, which hit stores via Rebel Youth Records/MRI-RED Distribution and just prior to the band taking their in-your-face live show on a US tour with Goldfinger and Less Than Jake.
Sound and Fury, which also includes guitarists Daz and Griffin, bassist John Kerns, and drummer Chris Avalos, is all about power chords, no-bullshit rock ‘n roll, and total sonic assault, as evidenced by the lead-off turbo-charged single and video from ‘Sound and Fury,’ “18.” To view the video for “18″ online, go to http://www.soundandfury.com/rebelyouth/videos.htm. The Sammy Ray Welch-directed video shoot for “18” recently took place in an abandoned police station in Toronto, and featured lighting design input from A.J. Pen, who is known for his work with Linkin Park.
The band has also announced they will be giving away five pairs of tickets to each show for fans who join the Sound & Fury street-team at www.rebelyouth.com. Fans are encouraged to join the street-team to qualify for tickets, merchandise and a customized Guitar Hero game.
In addition to perfectly capturing their raw power on album, Sound and Fury has been gaining fans by the truckload by also opening up for Canada’s leading pop-punk band, Sum 41, throughout the great white north (as well as the U.K.). The group plays stripped down straight up rock n’ roll and was praised by PunkTV.ca for “combining iconoclastic AC/DC thunder, Misfits brooding, the raw impetuousness of the Pistols and the charismatic anthemic song styling’s of the Ramones.”
That said, the forthcoming Sound and Fury-Airbourne pairing is bound to be one wicked rock n’ roll party!

CHAVIS RECORDS is thrilled to announce the signing of DC4 featuring Jeff Duncan (Armored Saint, Odin), Rowan Robertson (Dio), Shawn Duncan (Odin), and Matt Duncan. EXPLODE, the latest effort from DC4 saw a very limited release by the band earlier this year and now with an all new package design, and new artwork on the inside, will see a full scale release later this year. EXPLODE was produced by Joey Vera (Armored Saint, Fates Warning).
DC4 is Jeff on vocals and guitar, Rowan on guitar, Matt on bass/vocals and Shawn on drums.
Jeff Duncan and Shawn Duncan of Odin fame and notable for their appearances in The Decline Of Western Civilization – The Metal Years, formed DC4 with brother Matt Duncan in 1995 and released their debut E.P. Mood Swings produced by Joe Floyd (Bruce Dickinson, Warrior). In 2001 DC4 released Volume One which was produced by Joey Vera (Armored Saint, Fates Warning). With Rowan Robertson most notably for his dynamic guitar wizardry on Dio’s ‘Lock Up The Wolves’, joining the ranks in 2006, DC4 is now a combustible powerhouse of modern classic hard rock standing on its own with a definitive and uncompromised sound showcasing the highly skilled musical talent and song writing of the members that is DC4.
Plans are in the works for DC4 to hit the road in support of EXPLODE and additional details on the release date will soon be announced.
A7X to release rarities and live material.

Bang Tango, L.A. Guns and Faster Pussycat came to Louisville’s Expo Five Sunday Night (7/20/08). To read about Bang Tango’s opening set, click here. To read about L.A. Guns (featuring Tracii Guns) click here.
Faster Pussycat was the headlining act last Sunday Night. They opened the show, with the title cut off of their new CD, The Power and the Gloryhole. The rest of the set had the following tunes in no certain order:
House of Pain, Cathouse, Bathroom Wall, Babylon, Porn Star, Sex Drugs & Rock-N-Roll, When There’s A Whip There’s A Way.
Taime Downe’s vocals still sound the same after all of these years. It has been an extremely long time since I have seen this band. I don’t recall Taime chain smoking through every song he performs. For goodness sakes, put the cancer sticks away for an hour Taime!
Taime is the only original member left in Faster Pussycat. In fact, a couple of his band members, played earlier in the night. L.A. Guns drummer Chad Stewart was behind the skins, and Bang Tango guitarist, Michael Thomas handled the lead guitar. The rest of the band was fleshed out by Taime’s Newlydead bandmates, guitarist Xristian Simon, and Danny Nordahl on bass.
I must admit that I am not a very big fan of the latest Faster Pussycat CD, The Power and The Gloryhole. I was amazed that a lot of the new songs sound better live, than they do on the CD. I may have to revisit that CD, and update my original review.
Faster Pussycat sounded pretty good on Sunday Night. My only complaint is that their set was way too short. I would have liked to have heard 4 or 5 more tunes by Taime and company.
All three bands were better than I expected them to be. L.A. Guns stole the show, but Bang Tango and Faster Pussycat were still worth seeing. If you are a fan of these bands, be sure to check them out on one of their remaining dates. I hope you enjoy the Faster Pussycat videos below!
Locomotive Records will unleash Jam Pain Society’s Black Light Messiah in the U.S. on August 12. This North Carolina band, known for their theatrical stage presentation, counterpoints aggression and melody with soulful vocals.
Self-Produced by Guitarist/Composer Chris Hill (who cites KISS, Zeppelin, Van Halen, and Parliament/Funkadelic as major influences), these 12 tracks bristle with melodic invention, heavy guitar riffs and huge hooks.
The woman behind the mic for this Society is Leah Kirby. Raised on a steady diet of AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Motown, Leah cites Aretha Franklin and Ronnie James Dio as vocal influences. She is definitely not your typical rock frontwoman!
Nick Campbell’s the man behind the big drum kit, technically gifted, intricate, and raised in the Neil Peart (Rush) and Danny Carey (Tool) school of bombast.
The bottom is filled out in its own spectacular Jam Pain way with two bassists! Matt Frederick (from a band, Drill 187, that Hill produced) and Greg Putnam (he of the six-string bass) puts the prog into the proceedings. Dream Theater enthusiasts both, they combine for one voice…and in so doing, make this Jam totally unique!

Bang Tango, L.A. Guns and Faster Pussycat came to Louisville’s Expo Five Sunday Night (7/20/08). To read about Bang Tango’s opening set, click here.
L.A. Guns featuring Tracii Guns and new singer, Marty Casey took the stage, along with new rhythm guitarist, Alec Bauer, bassist Jeremy Guns and drummer Chad Stewart. I must admit that I had low expectations for this version of L.A. Guns. I am a fan of Phil Lewis, and his band with the same name, and quite honestly, I didn’t think Tracii’s group would live up to the name. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
The band opened up with the tune, Over the Edge, and played a mix set of L.A. Guns tunes, and a few cover songs. The set list in no particular order was:
Over the Edge, Rip and Tear, No Mercy, One More Reason, I Don’t Care (Brides of Destruction), Shut the Fuck Up (Brides of Destruction), The Ballad of Jayne, Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd) and You Can’t Always Get What You Want (The Rolling Stones).
With Marty Casey as the new singer of L.A. Guns, Tracii Guns has secured a very good front man for his band. Marty Casey put on a very energetic show, and did an admirable job on the L.A. Guns classic tunes. There was a song or two where the rest of the band provided a great deal of vocals, but for the most part, Casey handled the tunes with ease, and sounded pretty good. Casey joined L.A. Guns back in June, and he already seems at home with the band.
It has been a long time since I have seen Tracii Guns play live, and I believe that I have under estimated the amazing talent that he is. His guitar playing was way over the top Sunday night. Check out the solos in the eight minute Rip and Tear video, and you will see what I mean. Total awesome playing! I was very impressed with his guitar work all night.
Jeremy Guns, the bass player for L.A. Guns, took over the vocals for the Brides of Destruction tune, Shut the Fuck Up. He did a pretty good job. I was glad to hear some Brides tunes.
As a whole, Tracii’s L.A. Guns were better than ever. They put on a better show than the Phil Lewis led L.A. Guns did, the last couple of times that I saw them.
I still prefer Phil’s vocals to Marty’s, but I believe Tracii’s L.A. Guns band is a the better of the two now. This show made me a fan of The Tracii Guns faction, and I will certainly give them the support they deserve. I am now looking forward to their new album that is due later this year. I highly recommend checking them out if they come to your town.
Stop back tomorrow, for our part 3 of our review on Faster Pussycat. Until then, I hope you enjoy the videos below.
A7X has released a live video of their performance of the song, Afterlife, at the Taste of Chaos tour stop in Long Beach, CA.
Think of every song you air guitared to in school (but in the privacy of your own bedroom of course), every power ballad that you sang at the top of your lungs, but would never publicly admit that you liked and pile them into a 9-CD, 2 DVD, 152 track box set. Hard and Heavy features the hardest and
heaviest hits (along with a few guilty pleasures) from the best and most over the top rockers from the 70¹s and 80¹s including Poison, Whitesnake, Alice Cooper, Heart and Kiss. The set also includes four EXCLUSIVE, never-before-seen, acoustic performances by Poison front man Bret Michaels.
Sound good? I think so too! You can submit your name to win a copy at the link below!

WOW!! Now this is the music that I like to hear. I recently received a copy of a 7 song demo CD from Kiruna, Sweden’s Coldspell. Quite a few of the demos that I receive have a mixed production quality, and songs that are barely listenable. Neither one of these issues are present on this demo from Coldspell.
This demo ought to get the band signed, and signed quickly. (SPV, Frontiers, Chavis are you reading this?!) The music on this disc reminds me of a cross between Lynch Mob, and Whitesnake.
Coldspell states their influences as Led Zeppelin, Whitesnake, Mr. Big, and Yngwie Malmsteen. They obviously don’t try to hide their influences, and their music is awesome as result. For Micke Larsson to be a virtually unknown guitar player in 2008 is pretty amazing. His fretwork is reminiscent of some of the top guitarists of the 80’s including George Lynch, and John Sykes.
Keyboardist Matti Edlund sounds a whole lot like Deep Purple and Whitesnake’s Jon Lord. Niclas Swedentorp is one of the better undiscovered singers that I have listened to as of late.
Coldspell flat out rocks. This CD is far too good to be a demo. Every hard rock fan needs to keep an eye on this band. They are destined for great things in the near future.

A new three piece band from Sweden is starting to make some noise in the music scene. Check out their video, Noise, Booze and Tattoos.
Bang Tango, L.A. Guns (featuring Tracii Guns) and Faster Pussycat, played live, at Lousiville, KY’s Expo Five.
This is the first time that I have attended a show at this venue, and I must say, it is kind of cool. The building itself must have been used for a hangar or some other type of use, before it was converted into a concert hall/ bar. I don’t know if it had to do with the curved shape of the building, but this is the first concert in a long time, that I have not experienced the two day ear ringing after the show. It has nothing to do with the three bands that played. All of them were quite loud, and very rocking.
Bang Tango took the stage first at about 8:30 or so. The band started off with a cool cover of the T.Rex tune, 20th Century Boy. The rest of the set, in no certain order, had the following songs:
Attack of Life, Dancing on Coals, Someone Like You, Highway to Hell (AC/DC cover), Wrap My WIngs, and a few others that I don’t recall.
It has been over fifteen years since I last saw Bang Tango. Joe Leste’ may be the only remaining original Bang Tango member, but the band still sounds damn good in 2008. Joe’s voice still sounds the same after all of these years. His trademark screechy vocals were damn near perfect last night.
His band is rounded out by Michael Thomas (Beautiful Creatures) and Ryan Seelbach on guitar, Lance Eric on Bass, and Timmy Russell (Beautiful Creatures) on drums. Michael Thomas proved to be a pretty solid axeman. Little did I realize that when Bang Tango was done, we would see him play again. More on that later. As a whole, Bang Tango was a lot better than I remembered them to be. I enjoyed their set, but the best music of the night was yet to come.
Check out the videos from the Bang Tango portion of the show below.
Stop back tomorrow for Part 2 of this concert review, featuring L.A. Guns.

“THERAPY? are pleased to name ANDY GILL as the producer/mixer for their forthcoming album. Andy has worked on a host of diverse projects as a musician, producer, mixer and songwriter (Gang Of Four, Killing Joke, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Futureheads, Young Knives, The Jesus Lizard) etc…
Versions of new songs like “The Head That Tried To Strangle Itself”, “Low Winter Sun”,” I Told You I Was Ill” and “Mingusisyphus” illustrate the classic mix of intense instrumentation and dark pop that has made THERAPY? internationally renowned. Whilst most of their 90’s peers have been content to follow the options of rehash/reform/rollover, the UK trio have always carved their own unique musical furrow bolstered by a formidable live reputation and a stream of chart hits.
With the first half of 2008 spent writing and demoing, this exciting collaboration for THERAPY?’S 12th album proposes to be a career defining one. The as yet untitled album is due for release on DEMOLITION RECORDS imprint label, DR2 early 2009.
