According to Billboard.com, In just a three-day sales window, Metallica’s “Death Magnetic” (Warner Bros.) sold nearly half a million copies and tops The Billboard 200. The band’s first studio album since 2003 moved 490,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. “Death Magnetic” hit shelves on Friday instead of last Tuesday in order to accommodate a worldwide release date.
This total outdistances the opening sum of its last studio set, “St. Anger,” which sold 418,000 copies in a similarly shorter-than-normal window. The last Metallica album to stage a larger opener than “Magnetic” was 1996’s “Load,” which rolled 680,000 units in its first frame.
Metallica is the first group to see five of its albums bow at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. Previously, the act was tied with the Beatles, U2 and the Dave Matthews Band, with four each. It is also Metallica’s fifth consecutive studio album to debut at No. 1 and its seventh release to start with more than 300,000 since 1991, when Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data.
Last week’s No. 1, Young Jeezy’s “The Recession” (Def Jam), slips to No. 2 with a 65% loss in sales to 90,000. In its 49th week on the chart, Kid Rock’s “Rock N Roll Jesus” (Top Dog/Atlantic) climbs 4-3 on a 5% decline to 75,000 copies.
Jessica Simpson’s first country album, “Do You Know” (Columbia Nashville), starts at No. 4 with 65,000 and also lands atop Top Country Albums. The set was preceded by the single “Come On Over,” which peaked at No. 18 on Hot Country Songs in August. Simpson’s last album, “A Public Affair,” debuted and peaked at No. 5 on The Billboard 200 in 2006 with 101,000.
Slipknot’s Roadrunner album “All Hope Is Gone” keeps the No. 5 spot warm for a second week with 52,000 (-31%), as the Jonas Brothers’ “A Little Bit Longer” (Hollywood) stays put at No. 6 with 50,000 (-11%). Falling 3-7, the Game’s “LAX” (Geffen) experiences a 44% slip to 49,000. Lil Wayne’s Cash Money effort “Tha Carter III” ekes out a 2% sales increase and climbs 10-8 with 47,000.
L.L. Cool J earns his sixth consecutive top 10 debut as “Exit 13” (Def Jam) enters at No. 9 with 44,000. The set’s single “Baby” featuring The-Dream has peaked at No. 52 thus far on the Hot 100. L.L.’s last release, 2006’s “Todd Smith,” bowed at No. 6 with 116,000.
The Decca soundtrack to “Mamma Mia!” rounds out the top tier of the chart, selling 41,000 (-27%) and slipping 7-10.
Eric Benet celebrates a career-high week on The Billboard 200 as “Love and Life” (Friday/Reprise) debuts at No. 11 with 40,000. His previous high-water mark came with 1999’s “A Day in the Life,” which debuted at No. 25 with 44,000.
Gym Class Heroes’ fourth album, “The Quilt” (Decaydance/Fueled By Ramen), debuts at No. 14 with 32,000. First single “Cookie Jar,” also featuring the-Dream, has sold 126,000 downloads in 10 weeks of release. The band’s last set, 2006’s “As Cruel as School Children,” started at No. 93 with 10,000 but went on to peak at No. 35.
Late comedian Mitch Hedberg scores a No. 18 entry on The Billboard 200 with “Do You Believe In Gosh?,” shifting 27,000. The Comedy Central set also debuts at No. 1 on Top Comedy Albums — his first chart-topper there.
Starting right behind at No. 19 with 24,000 is Natalie Cole’s “Still Unforgettable” (Rhino), another album of interpretations of the Great American Songbook. Her last studio set, 2006’s “Leavin’,” topped out at No. 97.
Other debuts this week include Jenni Rivera’s “Jenni” (Fonovisa, No. 31, 16,000), R.K.M. Y Ken-Y’s “Royalty/La Realeza” (Pina/Machete, No. 32, 15,000), Joshua Radin’s “Simple Times” (Mom & Pop, No. 34, 14,000), Michael Franti & Spearhead‘s “All Rebel Rockers” (Anti-, No. 39, 12,000), Kardinal Offishall’s “Not 4 Sale” (Konlive/Geffen/Interscope, No. 40, 12,000) and Okkervil River’s “The Stand Ins” (Jagjaguwar, No. 42, 11,000).
At 6.84 million units, sales this week are up 1.3% from last week’s sum and down a whopping 25% from the same week last year.
Following the successful 2007 release of the coveted 4-CD+DVD Warchest box set, Megadeth is back with a vengeance with Anthology: Set The World Afire. The career-spanning 2-CD and digital collection, to be released September 30 by Capitol/EMI, features Megadeth’s top hits and fan favorites, a previously unreleased demo and two rare concert recordings.
Anthology: Set The World Afire is loaded with 35 electrifying tracks, among them Megadeth’s top hits, including “Trust,” “A Tout Le Monde,” “Insomnia” and “Train of Consequences.” Also included are rare 1992 concert recordings of “Peace Sells” and “Symphony of Destruction,” previously available only in limited release, the latter having never been released in the U.S. “High Speed Dirt” is a demo version, previously unreleased.
Iconic frontman Dave Mustaine pioneered the hugely successful metal band, Megadeth after his departure from Metallica. Beginning with the band’s 1985 debut album, Killing Is My Business…And Business Is Good!, and evolving through a shifting series of lineups, Megadeth crafted a dynamic, intelligent style that combined the aggressiveness of thrash metal, the improvisational nature of jazz, and cynical, articulate, politically-charged lyrics into an innovative mix that built a rabid worldwide following.
In 1992, Megadeth burst into the mainstream with their fifth album, Countdown To Extinction, which debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart and went on to sell more than two million copies in the U.S. alone. 1994’s Youthanasia followed with a #4 debut, while 1997’s Cryptic Writings yielded four Top 20 hits at rock radio, including “Trust” and “Almost Honest.”
After a brief hiatus in 2002, Megadeth made a bold return when their tenth studio album, The System Has Failed, debuted at #18 on Billboard’s Top 200.
In recent years, Mustaine has also overseen the broad remastering campaign for Megadeth’s Capitol Records catalog, which began with the band’s second album, Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying? Mustaine spent months remixing, remastering, restoring – and in some cases, reconstructing – the band’s Capitol catalog to bring it as close to his original vision as possible. Each reissue and last year’s career-spanning Warchest box set is packed with unreleased tracks, demos and alternate mixes, as well as new liner notes by the iconoclastic Mustaine.
For the majority of three decades, Megadeth has yanked heavy metal into the future – musically, lyrically, and culturally – and worked the raw soil into something desirable and dangerous. With defiance and grace, through unusual quality and intelligence, Megadeth has raised a generation on a diet of truth serum and bitter pills. Instead of being kicked to the curb for their insolence, they’ve been rewarded with seven Grammy nominations and five platinum and multi-platinum albums.
On September 30, Megadeth will continue to build on this powerful legacy with Anthology: Set The World Afire and will prove once again that they are an indispensable part of heavy metal history.

Performing on the show day will be the following five bands:
Swedish band TREAT was founded in 1984 and belongs to the Melodic Rock genre’s most loved bands. Their records are highly respected and the releases “Scratch And Bite”, “The Pleasure Principle” and “Dreamhunter” as well are all-time faves by many. In 2008, TREAT are still going strong and currently recording a new studio album which will see the light of day in early 2009.
STAGE DOLLS from Norway belong into the same category as TREAT: outstanding Scandinavian Melodic Rock! This outfit has been around since 1983 and also released some true Melodic Rock gem’s such as the records “Stage Dolls” and “Commandos”. Stage Dolls also are recording a new album right now, permanently are touring Norway and their appearance at Rock Over Munich will mark their first ever concert in Germany since 20 years!
These days, a nostalgic trip back to the 80s isn’t that unusual, especially when it comes to music. In 1988, the debut single of a then-unknown band became an overnight success. R5 was the name of the car. ‘Here I Am’ was the name of the song. DOMINOE was the name of the band! 2008 shows the Rock band from Munich very strong with the release of their new album “The Story Is Far From Told…”.
M.ILL.ION from Gothenburg, Sweden, was formed in 1989 by bass player and song-writer B.J Laneby. Influences in the music include everything from KISS, Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, DIO, Accept to Queen, the blues and The Beatles – all combined with the more heavy approach of the 2000’s. May 2008 saw the release of their current album “Chase Of The Thrill”.
DARK SKY had been founded as a school band in the very early 80’s in the South German city of Rottweil. In between, the band has released four highly recommended German Hard Rock albums and been permanently performing live. Their latest record was released in June 2008 on AOR Heaven and is called “Empty Faces”.

Z are proud to announce the signing of an agreement that finally allows the underground classic hard
rock debut from Britton “Rock Hard” to finally be released on cd format. The remastered version features
all ten original track plus ten bonus tracks!!!!
Originally release during 1988 via a CBS sub label, this album should have taken the band onto bigger things however music industry politics put a stop to that.
Britton where formed in 1985 by lead vocalist Michael Britton and lead guitarist Jim McMellen. They recruited Gary Holland (ex-Great White) on drums and bassist Greg Chaissson (who was later to join Jake E Lee’s Badlands). Last to join the band was Patrick Schunk, who supported keyboards and rhythm guitar.
The band recorded demos at The Record Plant which were featured on “Ten Best of the West”, a Rhino Records compilation of the 10 best yet unsigned bands in ’87. At this time, Greg Chaisson had left and was replaced by Skip Frank. The Record Plant demo and the Rhino compilation album resulted in a deal with TSR Records, a sub to the CBS label. The band released their highly acclaimed LP “Rock Hard” in 1988, singles lifted from the album achieved extensive radio coverage all over the states, and the album received fine reviews from most respected rock magazines at the time.
2008, for the first time ever, we will have the chance to listen to 20 amazing Britton tracks on CD format supported with the original artwork, pictures, lyrics, comments by front men Mike and Jim of the band and a sound that is better than ever. Britton where definitely a band that deserved much more success than they gained back in the day when relatively many melodic rock bands sold gold and platinum in the US, but with this release their classic “Rock Hard” album will finally get its worthy reissue.
Finger Eleven has released a new video, in support of their album, “Then Vs. You Vs. Me” In this video, they let fifty of their fans film the band. What you see is the end result. Check out the video below.
Back in ’99 I bought Backyard Babies “Total 13” and was absolutely blown away. I have been like a junkie needing a fix every since, getting my hands on anything from BYB that I can and the guys have never disappointed me. Since it’s been 2 years since Nicke Borg, Dregen, Johan Blomqvist, and Peder Carlsson released an album of new material I couldn’t wait to get this album in my hands.
Why these guys are not huge in the states confuses the hell out of me. When it comes to Backyard Babies, you know exactly what you are getting, which is straight up in your face rock that is going to beat you senseless and have you singing along while it happens. Which is exactly how the new album gets started with “Fuck Off & Die”. I have to admit the first time I heard I was a little disappointed, but the second time it felt like the song punched me square in face and kept beating me all the way to the end of the song. Peder play the drums on this song as if his life depended on it and Dregen pulls off a great solo. Nicke’s vocals are in your face from beginning to end. Johan is able to keep everyone in line and tight together.
Without giving me a chance to recover next in line is “Degenerated”. The best way to describe this song is BIG, Big sounding guitars, drums, and gang vocals, another great solo from Dregen. “Degenerated ” is definitely a roll the window down, crank the stereo, and sing along kind of song, as is most of the album.
While there isn’t a bad song on this album, “Come Undone” is my one of five favorite songs on the album. Peder once again plays like a monster on this track and Johan gets his chance with a very cool groove throughout.
The fifth track “Abandon” another one of my favorites gives your ears a break for a minute before starting the assault all over again and it continues all the way to the last song “Saved By The Bell”. While I would have preferred BYB went out with guns blazing they slowed it way down. This is the only song that Peder doesn’t get a chance to shine because there are no drums used on this track.
Fans of BYB know Dregen is the mastermind behind the band and along with Nicke the stars but Peder is the star on this album with phenomenal drumming throughout. In a year when some much great hard rock has been released BYB definitely made their case for Album of the Year with this release.
01: Fuck Off And Die
03: Come Undone
06: Voodoo Love Bow
10: Back On The Juice
11: Where Were You
12: Zoe Is A Weirdo
13: Saved By The Bell
Backyard Babies are:
Nicke Borg – vocals, guitar
Dregen – lead guitar, backing vocals
Johan Blomqvist – bass
Peder Carlsson – drums

I thought 15 was one of the best hard rock albums of 2006. For this listener, Black Butterfly has a lot to live up to, if it is going to surpass that disc. To prepare myself for this review, I listened to Buckcherry’s last two releases Time bomb and 15. I am pretty fond of both discs, and I wanted a refresher on both of these before I spun Black Butterfly. If anything I wanted to make sure that I gave Black Butterfly a fair review.
Black Butterfly starts off strong enough, with two rocking cuts, “Rescue Me” and “Tired of You”. Both of these songs, along with “Talk to Me” are amongst my early favorites on this disc.
Every Buckcherry CD to date has had a nasty but catchy tune on it. Time bomb had “Porno star” and “Time Bomb”, 15 has “Crazy Bitch”and “So Far”, and Black Butterfly follows suit with “Too Drunk…”. The lyrics may be juvenile, but I have come to expect these type of songs from Buckcherry, and I can’t help but to like them.
There are several cuts which have a lot of radio potential including “Dreams”, “Don’t Go Away”, and “All of Me”. “Don’t Go Away” kind of feels like a rip off of “Sorry” to me, and because of that, I don’t like this song as much. In fact, I think “All of Me” is the better ballad on Black Butterfly.
The lyrics for the song “Cream” are somewhat puzzling. You can probably guess the subject matter of the song. I have listened to this song several times, and the lyrics just don’t make sense to me. I get the chorus, but the song verses don’t seem to follow suit. I like the music well enough, but the song writing is suspect on this tune.
As a whole, I think Black Butterfly is another solid but not spectacular effort for Buckcherry. I don’t think this disc has as many strong songs as 15, but it is a little more consistent than Time Bomb. Black Butterfly feels like Buckcherry was trying to repeat the same formula they used for 15. On some songs it works, and on others it doesn’t. The end result is a good hard rock disc, that Buckcherry fans will likely enjoy, even if it doesn’t measure up to their last disc.

TESTAMENT is pleased to announce a string of headlining dates this October with Louisiana metallers Soilent Green. The tour includes TESTAMENT’s appearance at the Hammerstein Ballroom on October 9 in New York City, where they will be direct support to headliners Children of Bodom; also special guests, The Black Dahlia Murder and Between The Buried and Me.
Guitarist Eric Peterson checked in to discuss the Metal Masters tour and the band’s upcoming US headlining dates: “We just finished the Metal Masters tour, and it was a great tour to be on. Unfortunately, it went by too quick. We got to know everyone towards the end, and it started to feel like family. It’s too bad it had to end so soon, especially after getting to know everyone. Hopefully, the Metal Masters will continue next year in Europe.
“In the meantime, we’re heading to Japan and Australia. The last time we played there in ’06, we promised our fans we’d have a new record out the next time we came around. We kept our promise and we’re excited to get back there and play it for them.
“Once we get back, we’ll be headlining some east coast shows, including a one-off with Children of Bodom at the infamous Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC. We’ll have full production, so we’re excited to put on our whole show. This tour is going to focus on secondary markets, so we don’t spoil anything for next year. We plan on having a big year and putting a big package together, wink wink.”
Having just wrapped up the biggest tour of the summer – Metal Masters with Judas Priest, Heaven and Hell, and Motorhead – TESTAMENT has been touring to support their phenomenal new release, The Formation of Damnation. TESTAMENT has been in the top 3 on Sirius’ Hard Attack since March and were 1 on national metal radio for 12 weeks. After eight months in the writing process, Tesla has announced their new album, Forever More will be released 10/7. On Forever More, the band keeps their gritty brand of guitar-rock coming around every turn, with energized anthems like “I Wanna Live” to somber-toned tracks such as “Fallin’ Apart”. The band wrote and recorded during a very dynamic period for the members, and those bizarre times fueled the process, leading to what they say are some of their “most exciting songs”.
Having already been to Europe this year, playing festivals with Judas Priest and Kiss, Tesla are ready to hit the road;bringing the new material for the first time to their fans at home.
Forever More hits stores on 10/7
Metallica’s Death Magnetic has easily been one of the most hyped CD’s of 2008. This album will certainly be a major conversation piece in the hard rock and heavy metal world. I can’t think of another album released this year that will receive an equal amount of love and hate.
The question most people have been wondering is if this disc surpasses Metallica’s last effort, the awful St. Anger.
The first time I saw the cover art, I thought it was pretty terrible. I still don’t think it is great, but the way the cover is cut does make it kind of cool, and if anything, unique. Thankfully, the music is better than the cover art! Death Magnetic is cram packed with music. This CD has over 70 minutes of music. The first two songs together clock in at 15 minutes in length by themselves.
Death Magnetic is not a detour from Metallica’s roots ala the Black and Load albums. There are a couple of instances, where the album slows down just enough, so fans of the Black/Load era Metallica will find something to sink their teeth into. In fact, on Death Magnetic, Metallica does a pretty good job blending the sound of all of their past albums (with the exception of St. Anger). The end result is a heavy album that I think most fans will be pleased with.
Death Magnetic starts off in heavy fashion with “That Was Just Your Life“. The music on this song is awesome, and easily one of the heaviest songs Metallica has done since their album, And Justice For All. I thought the vocals of James Hetfield were mixed a little too low on this song, but the music is so full of headbanging goodness that the mixing quickly becomes an after thought.
“The End of The Line” is another long heavy cut with a crazy amount of guitar solos by Kirk Hammett. If this song doesn’t ignite your inner head banger, your headphones must be broken.
Chances are you have already heard the first single off of Death Magnetic, “The Day That Never Comes“. I immediately took a liking to this song. I though it was a nice mix of the Black album, with a mix of Master of the Puppets thrashing guitar solos by Kirk Hammett.
“Suicide & Redemption” might be the heaviest and longest instrumental track that I have ever heard.
I didn’t care for the track “Cyanide” at first, but repeated plays has completely changed my mind. I like this track a lot now. Some other highlights for me are “Broken, Beat & Scarred”, and “The Judas Kiss”.
The Bottom line, Death Magnetic is a great return to form by Metallica. Yes, folks that is right Metallica still has it, and if you haven’t bought Death Magnetic, you should go get it!

Every Labor Day weekend, WEBN in Cincinnati puts on one of the biggest fireworks displays in the midwest. This end of the summer celebration has become a tradition in Cincinnati. Usually about 500,000 people are crammed into the banks of the Kentucky and Ohio sides of the Ohio River to watch the huge fireworks display.
Another thing that is always a constant for this massive celebration is live music. There are few stages set up on both sides of the river, where people can check out local and national acts for free!
In 2007, UGLY opened up for the band Operator. That show was somewhat of a fiasco (thanks Operator). You can read more about that here.
In 2008, UGLY was the headlining act for a bunch of local acts inluding Edge of Life, American Hardcore, Screaming Kings, Livid and Rootbound. The band had just returned from their European tour. Cincinnati was the last stop on their tour, before the band heads home to Detroit, and to the studio to record album #2.
UGLY’s set included their songs “Pusher”, “24 Hours”, “Friday Night (In The City)”, “The Cats Ass”, “Sex Drugs and Rock & Roll and Van Halen’s Unchained medley”and a brand new song “Close to You”.
This was a pretty fun show by UGLY. Lead singer Geo Tuebl was very interactive with the audience. He brought a young boy up on stage who he let play the tamborine during their set. Geo also went out into the crowd while signing some of the songs.
Chris Castro has taken over as drummer for UGLY, and he seems to fit in quite well. He does a pretty good job keeping the rhythm going with bassist Frank Green.
As much as I hate to see the summer concert season end, I was glad to have caught UGLY live again. I was happy that WEBN brought them in for this show. I will be anxiously awaiting their new CD.
Eleven Seven Music/Atlantic recording group Buckcherry will continue on their upcoming tour as planned, despite the announcement that Avenged Sevenfold has had to cancel their performances in September and early October. The dates, originally billed as co-headline dates with Avenged Sevenfold and Buckcherry, will see Buckcherry supported by Shinedown and Saving Abel.
“We’re glad to hear that Shadows is fine, and can’t wait to get out on the road with the band in November,” said Buckcherry frontman Josh Todd. “We have a great show planned, and we are pumped to get on the road behind the new album and play it for the fans.”
A7X’s M. Shadows added, “We’re happy to hear that Buckcherry will carry on with the dates we had scheduled together and look forward to joining them for a kick ass tour in November.”
Constant road warriors, Buckcherry performed more than 300 shows in support of their last album, 15. The band will release their much anticipated follow-up, Black Butterfly, on Tuesday, September 16. For up-to-the-minute updates, go to www.buckcherry.com and www.myspace.com/buckcherry

Joetown (aka Joe Delaney) with his debut solo album, “Pills and Ammo”, which will be released through his own label Joetown Records. New tracks from the album are currently streaming online at http://www.MySpace.com/Joetown
Joetown has been tearing up stages across the nation with his intense live show and earning fans with each sweaty, in-your-face performance. The group has earned praise from high profile players like Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash and been creating a deafening buzz from their jaw dropping live performances.
Hailing from Wallingford, Connecticut, Joetown has been riffing, rocking, and wailing for years. The energetic frontman has made a name for himself performing and recording with groups such as American Trash with Steve Broderick of Trans Siberian Orchestra and Kings of Reality, while producing both albums for critically acclaimed aggressive hard rockers Gargantua Soul.
Now Joetown has his sights firmly set on making a name for himself with his debut album, “Pills and Ammo”. The album is unapologetic rock n’ roll at its best and perfectly captures the buzz of Joetown’s kick ass live show, as evidenced by such standout tracks as “Crash,” “Finger,” and “All My Angels.” And according to Joetown, it is the live show which sees the group (which features Joetown on vocals/guitar, Kerry Gollarney on guitar, Keefer on bass, and Mat Reale on drums) really taking it to the next level.
The band has also announced they will be giving away merchandise, guitar gear and promotional items for fans that join the Joetown street-team at www.JoetownRocks.com. Fans are encouraged to join the street-team to qualify.
Joetown will be heading out on the road in support of “Pills and Ammo” with a tour of the East Coast expected to be announced shortly.
