Special Rockline Monday Night Featuring Alice in Chains
Occasionally, rarely, things do not work out as planned. This is one of those times. Feeling we were completely set with a well known A-List guest for our next show, communication suddenly stopped and the long holiday weekend was upon us. With no assurances of the outcome, we have decided to present one of the all-time great, most requested Rocklines. We are pleased to offer an incredible show we feel you will enjoy immensely. Here is more detail:
Monday July 19, 1999 was a very special evening on ROCKLINE as we presented an evening with Alice In Chains featuring guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney and at the time a very special unanticipated guest. Jerry and Mike were in our ROCKLINE Los Angeles studio, while Sean was “somewhere in upstate New York”. We can’t remember why there was secrecy as to where Sean was located, but there was. We think he was in Buffalo, but ultimately it really doesn’t matter. We were honored to have three members of AIC join us to discuss the June 29, 1999 album” Nothing Safe: The Best of the Box”, the single CD release which was the precursor to the mammoth 3 CD set “Music Bank”, which dropped on October 26, 1999. We were told there was absolutely no way that legendary AIC vocalist Layne Staley would take part in the show. That was fine with us as the prospect of three members of Alice In Chains joining us to take your calls was enticing, to say the least.
Introductions were made and the show began. Before long, we received a call from someone claiming to be Layne Staley listening in Seattle. The call was not on some special “in house” line; in fact it was our toll free number provided for public use. So whoever it was waded through the incredibly heavy volume of calls to get in touch with us. After much hand wringing and off the air, “can you answer this question about Alice In Chains”, moments we realized it truly was Layne. As you might imagine we had a little help from Jerry, Mike and Sean who served up some questions that only Layne could possibly answer. We now had all four members of the band on the show to discuss their entire career, as this was essentially a Greatest Hits package. What resulted was a magical evening to say the least. When we lost Layne in April of 2002 we were informed this was his final radio appearance with all three of his band mates. We received numerous requests from newspapers, magazines and other media for a copy of the show. With the exception of The Seattle Times with whom the band had a solid relationship, we declined. Now, just shy of a decade later it is our distinct pleasure to present a truly Special Encore ROCKLINE with all four members of one of Rock’s most influential bands, Alice In Chains. No calls for this one, obviously. We think you’ll agree this is a really special treat to hear Layne’s voice again and his interaction with his friends and co-creators of some truly spectacular and innovative music. It’s an incredible evening with all four members of Alice In Chains on the next ROCKLINE!

I had to study for a final exam last night and I ended up driving to go get cigarettes. I turned on the radio at the right time, and was more excited than a kid on Christmas. I’m a huge AIC fan, and lets just say that I never got back to studying. Just hearing Laynes voice on the radio again was enough to send chills down my spine. Thanks for playing the retro-rockline, that was absolutely the most awesome thing I’ve ever heard on the radio.
