Frontiers Records is excited to announce the signing for a multi album deal of the mighty VISION DIVINE, Italy’s Melodic Metal Finest. The new cooperation will bring the first fruits with the release of the band’s brand new studio album “9 Degrees West of the Moon” on January 23rd 2009.
Born as a side project of the esteemed guitarist and songwriter of Labyrinth, Olaf Thorsen, to keep his working relationship with Fabio Lione (former Labyrinth vocalist who had moved on to Rhapsody) Vision Divine evolved during the years in a real band who released 5 acclaimed studio albums, one DVD and toured several times in Japan, South and North America and played in several European countries.
The new album is particularly important in the history of the band as it marks the return of Fabio Lione on lead vocals, after Thorsen’s decision to say goodbye to Michele Luppi in June 2008. “Fabio’s return is like going back to square one for us”, comments the band’s creative mastermind Olaf “However Vision Divine is a band that did always move forward and I think that with his voice and interpretation he has enriched the songs and gave them a very peculiar and personal edge. I am truly enthusiast of his return in the band and look forward to bring this record out there with his amazing vocal abilities”. Vision Divine line-up is completed by Alessio Lucatti on keyboards, Cristiano Bertocchi (ex-Labyrinth) on bass, Federico Puleri on guitar and Alessandro Bissa on drums.
Produced by none other than the former Stratovarius mainman Timo Tolkki, Vision Divine created what is easily their most mature and intense record to date. Entitled “9 Degrees West of The Moon”, this is Vision Divine ‘s heaviest, but yet most melodic and catchy album ever, showing why they are now the number 1 band in the Italian Metal scene. “Melodies are the most important element of our music. However our songwriting is very diverse” explains Olaf, who adds “all the songs have very different atmospheres and can go from melodic songs like Violet Loneliness to very aggressive and heavy ones. I think there is something for everyone on this record“.
“Vision Divine are also working hard on putting up a new World Tour which will bring the band to play again in Asia, South America and possibly Europe outside their homeland Italy. “9 Degrees West Of The Moon” is a fantastic journey that fans will consider as the true Vision Divine career defining statement!
The album’s final tracklisting includes: Violet Loneliness; Fading Shadow; Angels In Disguise; The Killing Speed of Time; The Streets Of Laudomia; Fly; Out In Open Space; 9 Degrees West of The Moon; A Touch Of Evil; Fading Shadow (demo version – Exclusive Bonus Track for Europe)
This past Tuesday HRH had the privilege to take part in a teleconference with the one and only Rob Zombie. Unlike the one on one interviews we have brought to our readers before, this time we were sitting with such heavyweights as MTV News, Billboard Magazine, AOL, Blabbermouth, and others. For over an hour Rob spent time talking about the various projects he has been working on.
Of course the subject of the upcoming massive 79 song White Zombie box set “Let Sleeping Corpses Lie” was a popular topic. In regards to the box set Rob stated “You know I’ve been trying to put this together for a long time. But I would let everything take precedence over it. A movie or a new record, because I am not big on revisiting the past, I like to move forward all the time. I decided from the get go I would put every single thing that we recorded into the box set. Because for so many years people have been asking, “How do I get the old records?” Because the first chunk of our career never came out on CD. They were just limited edition vinyls that basically nobody has. The box set has every song of every vinyl record, every CD, every soundtrack, every finished recording that we thought was a finished mix. It’s nice to have everything out there for whoever wants it.”
As far as the title of the box set is concerned “It’s pretty self explanatory because I didn’t want everybody to think the box set was the beginning of something new. I wanted everyone to realize it was the end of something. There is really nothing more to be done, there are some crappy demos and other stuff they could release but they’re probably not worth listening to. This is probably the last thing that will come from the band for sure.”
None of the former members of White Zombie were involved in putting the box set together at all and Rob mentioned he hadn’t talked to anyone in the band since their last show together.
When the conversation turned to his still untitled new studio album, Rob said “We are almost finished and will probably be completely finished with the record before Christmas. This is the first time since White Zombie broke up that I actually recorded with a band. It’s the same guys that I have had for a couple of years John 5, Tommy Clufetos, and Piggy D. So the record has got a much more solid vibe and it’s just going to be a much more intricate and interesting record, just due to the fact that there are four people in the room all the time working and contributing. Great things usually come out of situations that we have a great vibe and that’s what’s going on here.” Rob also shared a couple of the song titles with us, those being “Jesus Frankenstein” and a favorite of the band called “Fixed Bubble Gum“. He stated there is no timetable for the album’s release date and there are also no plans as of yet for a tour but being on the road after next summer isn’t out of the question.
In case you didn’t know Rob does have a new single out and available for the masses that song being “War Zone” (Listen to the new single here) which can be found on the Punisher War Zone soundtrack. When talking about the new single “When it comes to doing a song for a movie there’s usually not a lot of time to write something new. But this time I was already in the studio recording. So they gave me a copy of the script so i would know what it was about and I just got in there and cranked it out.” Rob also thinks “War Zone” served as a kick in the ass to getting the album recorded. “We’ve been recording but we really hadn’t finished any songs so that song was a good kick in the ass to actually have to finish a song and it became the domino effect of finishing all the songs for the record.”
Almost anytime you are talking to Rob Zombie at some point in the conversation the subject of movies is going to come up and it was no different this time. When asked what his primary focus was right now Rob stated “It’s 50/50. Which ever one I am doing at that time is the most important thing to me, that’s why I do not try to do them simultaneously. When I am touring that is 100% what I am about and when I am making a movie that is 100% what I am about. But they are both equally important. Rob also said he has been approached several times about producing a sequel to Halloween but nothing is in the works. As far as other movie projects are concerned his long awaited project “The Haunted World of El Superbeasto” is completely finished and he is now trying to figure out when is the best time for it to come out.
When asked about another movie project of his “Tyrannosaurus Rex“. Rob informed us “There is no plan, I haven’t really started it yet. The problem with “Tyrannosaurus Rex” is it was sort of announced way ahead of time unfortunately. So since it was out there I started talking about it a little bit. But that movie has not even started yet so there’s not too much to talk about.”
Like I said earlier the teleconference lasted over an hour but Rob was very gracious with his time and answering all the questions asked of him. From the sound of things Rob Zombie is going to be a very busy man over the next year if not longer.

GRAMMY-nominated modern rock band RED is preparing to release its second CD, INNOCENCE & INSTINCT, on February 10, 2009, via Essential Records. The disc features 10 songs, including its first single Fight Inside. The band will simultaneously release a Deluxe Edition of INNOCENCE & INSTINCT featuring four bonus tracks, the Death of Me music video, a making of documentary and more.
The Nashville-based group is currently touring the U.S. with Puddle Of Mudd–with a November 16 show at Highline Ballroom in New York City–through November 29, and will perform at select radio shows in December. Known for relentless touring and riveting live shows, RED–JASEN RAUCH (guitars), MICHAEL BARNES (vocals), ANTHONY ARMSTRONG (guitar) and RANDY ARMSTRONG (bass)–has logged an impressive 500+ live shows since releasing its End Of Silence debut album in 2006 and are giving fans a taste of its new music while on the road in late 2008.
INNOCENCE & INSTINCT offers a primal and provocative look into the dark and sometimes seemingly hopeless fight inside each one of us, told through the powerful sphere of the bands hard-hitting music. Produced by award-winning Rob Graves and mixed by Ben Grosse (Disturbed, Depeche Mode, Sevendust), the provocative INNOCENCE & INSTINCT was forged in a perfect storm of inspiration and catastrophe. From the literary spark of Dantes Inferno to the bloody aftermath of a 75mph highway crash, RED absorbed a flood of ideas and emotions that empowered the band to create powerful and thought-provoking rock songs. Finding the sonic sweet spot where epic and primal converge, INNOCENCE & INSTINCT features dynamics that super-charge its innocence vs. instinct theme.
INNOCENCE & INSTINCT is about the duality of man, explains guitarist/songwriter RAUCH. The album examines the fight between our childlike innocence and the instinctive side that makes us do things we shouldnt. A lifetime is spent on this internal tug of war between who we really are and who we hope to be.
A highway crash in late 2007 accelerated the bands emotional core. As the tour van smashed into a guardrail and violently slid sideways across the highway, the band experienced new heights of horror that they channeled into INNOCENCE & INSTINCT. It brought an intensity and depth that we couldnt reach without going through this experience, RAUCH reflects. In the months after the accident, it felt like everything was in overdrive. In a split second, it changed our lives, adds six-stringer ANTHONY ARMSTRONG.
The disc is highlighted by its first Rock radio single, Fight Inside. The song is an anthem for what the entire album is about. On our first release, End of Silence, we addressed issues we struggled with, but this time its about the struggle itself, says guitarist-songwriter Jasen Rauch. It encapsulates the struggle between innocence and instinct that resonates through all the songs on this record. The music captures the internal tug-of-war inside all of us; between good and evil, light and darkness, spirit and flesh, exploring that fragile barrier between overcoming and being overcome.
RED made an immediate impact with its 2006 debut, End of Silence, which sold more than a quarter-million copies and earned several awards and nominations. The GRAMMY-nominated disc–featuring the radio hits Breathe Into Me (No. 1 , Christian Rock & Top 10, Active Rock), Break Me Down (No.1, Christian Rock), Already Over (No. 1, Christian Rock & Top 15, Active Rock), Let Go (No. 1, Christian Rock & Top 15, Active Rock) and Lost (No.1, Christian Rock) — introduced the sonic layering, rich orchestration and visceral dynamics that became REDs signature sound. The album steadily built momentum, cracking the Billboard Top 200 a year after its release. Not surprisingly, the album became a hit with other bands as well, leading to tours and shows with Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, Sevendust, Three Days Grace, Flyleaf, Buckcherry, Puddle Of Mudd, Staind, Seether, Disciple, Third Day and Switchfoot, among others.

Titans among themselves: 1 February 2009 will see the launch of a four-week tour by the two metal legends, Saxon and Iced Earth, in Paris. This sensational co-headlining package is certainly among the strongest of recent years and will take the two bands through countries such as France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Luxemburg, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Austria, Hungary and Italy. Fans can look forward to dynamic power metal at its very best, especially since both groups will also present thoroughly exciting new releases to accompany the tour. Tickets for the concerts are available from ticketing agencies.
Saxon are considered one of the most charismatic acts of today’s metal business. Their latest album release, Into The Labyrinth, out on 12 January 2009 (Germany: 9 January 2009, U.S.: 13 January) via Steamhammer/SPV proves that Saxon mark 2009 haven’t lost any of their expressiveness, enthusiasm and inspiration. Along with numerous classics, vocalist Biff Byford & Co. will present the strongest tracks from their new album during the tour, expertly combining present and past.
For Iced Earth, this will be the first full European tour since the return of frontman, Matt Barlow. “I am pleased Matt is back,” explains guitarist and songwriter Jon Schaffer. “We are brothers with a long, meaningful relationship behind us” The band will present songs from their current album, The Crucible Of Man, and for spring Schaffer has also announced the release of a new DVD.

Nearly a decade after suing Napster for posting their music online, Metallica are contemplating the possibility of an Internet release for their next album. “We’re free of our record contract,” Lars Ulrich tells Rolling Stone. “We have that element of complete freedom with the next record, so we can do whatever we want. We could do an Internet thing or even put it on Andy Greene’s record label.” (I, for one, think that’s a great idea). They’re in no rush to head back into the studio however. “I wouldn’t hold my breath for another Metallica record,” Ulrich says. “I’m still decompressing and coming down from the whole experience of the last one, but if we spit one out every four or five years that’s not so bad.” In the meantime, Lars and the band are reveling in the reaction to Death Magnetic and their ongoing American arena tour. “There’s a tremendous amount of goodwill for Metallica right now,” Ulrich says. “Not only from the fans, but from our peers and from the critics and from everybody, so it’s just a good time to be out amongst it.”

Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson says that he and brother Chris Robinson, the group’s frontman, have “tons of songs around. Chris and I are always writing.” They just have to figure out what to do with them.
“We want to make another record” with the Crowes, the younger Robinson tells Billboard.com, which likely means a 2009 follow-up to this year’s “Warpaint.” That was the Crowes’ first set of new material in seven years and the band’s first for its own Silver Arrow Records imprint.
“We still want to do this,” Robinson says. “Having all this sort of new enthusiasm and this new found sense of identity as a band, I think we want to put it to good use and make another great record and really do some different and interesting things.”
The Crowes resume their Euphoria Or Bust Tour on Dec. 5 for a dozen dates, finishing with a five-night stand Dec. 15-20 at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Now shows have been announced yet for 2009, and Robinson notes that recording will be a priority.
“Right now I’m just writing what I write, and Chris is writing what he writes,” the guitarist says. “When we get together and put all of our songs together, I think it’ll dictate what common direction it’s going to go. Once that happens, that’s when I think everyone’s gonna come in and we’ll solidify everything.”
The Robinsons also hope to do some more work as Brothers of a Feather, which they launched with a 2006 duo acoustic tour. “Chris and I had so much fun doing it, we’re talking about making a new Brothers album of all originals,” Robinson reports, adding that they’re not concerned about having to make a Solomon’s choice between songs for that project and for the Crowes.
“I think the context will dictate that pretty easily,” he says. “I think there will be songs that are more suited to that (acoustic) presentation than what would be right for the Crowes. We’ll just keep writing and come up with things and suss through ‘em all. It’s better to have too much material than too little.
Cyclone Records is proud to announce that Brad Trew has assumed management duties of Russ Graham (aka Russ Dwarf) for a number of different projects. Russ is best known for quirky stage antics as lead singer of the Killer Dwarfs.
Russ’ latest projects include:
• Showcasing the best of the Killer Dwarfs, RUSS DWARF AND THE MONGOLS features Russ Dwarf (Lead Vocals), Chris Targiroff (Guitars, Vocals), Youri Targiroff (Guitars, Vocals), Big Papa Mike (Bass Guitar, Vocals), Mark Di Claudio (Drums, Vocals). The band launched their inaugral show at the Carl Dixon benefit show at The Pheonix Concert Hall-Toronto on October 30th, 2008.
• Russ Graham is also now fronting the Canadian classic rock band, MOXY. Dubbed in the press as Canada’s Led Zeppelin, MOXY is recognized internationally for delivering a blistering, explosive live experience for over thirty years. Russ will be hitting the stage with MOXY for the first time, headlining the Javelina Harley Davidson/KZEP Festival on November 22nd, 2008 in Boerne, Texas.
• Russ is also fronting a new “supergroup” comprised of members of Moxy (Earl Johnson), Lee Aaron (Morgan Evans), Santers (Rick Lazaroff). The band is heading into the studio to record new, original material and will be performing live in 2009.
About Russ Dwarf:
As co-founder of Killer Dwarfs in 1981, Russ Graham quickly gained international success, first in Canada with the Killer Dwarfs’ self-titled debut album in 1983. The break-through in the United States came when San Antonio based radio personality Joe Anthony started spinning their album on a regular basis, much to the delight of hard rocking Texans. This planted the seeds for what would result in Killer Dwarfs receiving a lot of attention south of Canada’s border.
A worldwide recording contract with Epic Records eventually landed them an opening spot for Iron Maiden’s sold out tour of Great Britain and sharing stages with such acts as Dio and Michael Schenker across North America. The band soon received a nomination for Canada’s prestigious Juno Award as “Heavy Metal Album of The Year”.
Killer Dwarfs came to an end in 1995 save for a reunion tour in 2001. Putting a period on the world of the Killer Dwarfs, they decided to pursue their own independent efforts.

NICOLA JUNCAR talks to rockers Thunder, who are at Newcastle City Hall tonight.
THUNDER once described themselves as the “biggest rock ‘n’ roll band you’ve never heard of”.
And it’s not hard to see why they feel that way.
They’ve toured the world several times over and have been on the same line-up as rock legends such as Aerosmith, Metallica, Kiss, Van Halen and Bon Jovi.
Yet despite their success and an eventful 20-year career which has just seen them release their ninth album, they’ve received very little TV or radio exposure.
So how can they still be selling records and pulling in the crowds?
The answer’s simple to guitarist and the band’s main songwriter Luke Morley, who believes their continuing success is down to hard work – but more importantly, enjoying themselves.
Having met in 1971, when they were 11, Luke and singer Danny Bowes have been playing in bands since they were 15.
Their first show, with Harry James on drums, Ben Matthews on guitar and keyboards and Mark ‘Snake’ Luckhurst on bass, was in front of just 35 people in July 1989.
But more shows followed, including two dates at the NEC in Birmingham opening for Aerosmith.
Luke said: “We just decided to get out there and play. We knew our ability to play live would make us friends and if we only played to 10 people we felt confident that those 10 people would tell their mates and another 10 would be along to the next gig.
“We grafted and we enjoyed it, and it worked!
“We went from a pub in Shepherd’s Bush to headlining three sold out nights at Hammersmith Odeon within 15 months.”
Their debut album, Backstreet Symphony, was a huge success and their follow-up album in 1992, Laughing on Judgement Day, went straight into the album charts at number two – being held off the top spot by Kylie’s Greatest Hits.
However, the rest of the 90s proved to be a tough decade – not just for Thunder, but for all traditional rock bands, as grunge and Brit Pop took over the airwaves.
Luke said: “I’d be lying if I said it didn’t affect us but it was hitting all the rock bands. We didn’t want to go down the grunge route. It didn’t suit our style of playing, so it was better to just persevere.”
The gamble has eventually paid off as the last 18-months or so has seen a huge rock revival, kick-started by the reunion of Led Zeppelin and last month AC/DC found themselves at the top of the album charts – something that probably wouldn’t have happened a few years ago.
Thunder have also benefited from the return to form as they toured with Whitesnake and Def Leppard this summer – two other casualties of the 90s grunge phase – and were able to put all their efforts into recording their ninth album, Bang!
Unlike most bands, however, Thunder decided not to record their songs in a studio and instead plumped for a castle, in Somerset.
Luke said: “We’ve always made our best albums in a rural, English setting so Walton Castle was the perfect location for us.
“We had cables and wires running everywhere but it was definitely worth it, as it’s the best sounding album we’ve ever made. We even befriended the local landlords, who were inconsolable when we moved out.”

The English band Thunder is back with their 9th studio album “Bang!”. Like a lot of English bands there is nothing flashy or outrageous about Thunder and like a lot of their European counter-parts they have largely been ignored here in the states but loved throughout Europe and Asia. They are not a band whose music is going to start a musical revolution or change the world, but the things you are always going to get from Danny Bowes, Luke Morley, and the boys are a solid performance with some great songs from start to finish.
“Bang!’ gets started with “On The Radio”, which is a classic Thunder song that can proudly stand up with songs like “Dirty Love”, “Flawed To Perfection”, and “I Love You More Than Rock-n-Roll” to name a few. Bowes sings the truth in fact that the band has survived in the music business for over 20 years despite the fact they have received almost no support from radio or video channels. Morley, one of the most underrated guitar players in music, lays down a great bluesy riff with a great solo and a touch of slide guitar. “On The Radio” is a song that will have to tapping your foot and singing along after one listen.
“Stormwater” has another great blues riff as it starts off and with the bass lines laid down by Chris Childs. It is not a sing along song like the album opener but with its great solo and jam feel to it it is definitely another can’t miss song.
“Carol Ann” starts out with a little acoustic and slide guitar courtesy of Ben Matthews and Luke Morley, but this mid tempo rocker has a gospel feel to it when you throw in a little piano and with the back up vocals and hand claps. With a solo perfect for all the air guitar players out there and a great chorus Thunder could have yet another classic on their hands.
“Candy Man” is not a cover of the Sammy Davis Jr. staple, but it is another great song that can easily stand and fit in with any number of songs in Thunder’s catalog. While I hate to beat a dead dog, for the life of me I can’t understand why Luke Morley does not get more respect as a guitarist, his playing on this song and album as a whole is excellent.
If there is one weak spot on “Bang!” it would be the ballads. Unfortunately when it comes to ballads by Thunder I always compare them to “Love Walked In” and “A Lover Not A Friend” which isn’t fair because those two songs are absolutely great songs. But there is one on “Bang!” that comes close to equaling those two, that being “Watching Over You” which seems to be a duet between Bowes and Morley and is another great performance.
“Miracle Man” covers a familiar topic, TV preachers trying to get people to save their souls by emptying out their pockets in the name of religion. While Bowes sounds angry when singing about the subject he still makes the song a great roll the windows down and sing along song.
Following in the foot steps of “Englishman on Holiday” comes “Turn Left at California”. It wouldn’t surprise me to hear this song covered by any number of country artists. It is almost a country song as it is with Thunder playing thanks to the banjo and harmonica used in the song. This is a great road trip song.
“Love Sucks”, “One Bullet”, and “Honey” finish out the album with “Honey” being the best of three as it is yet another song that can stand proudly with any of Thunder’s more recognizable songs.
Like I said earlier Thunder are not going to change the musical landscape with this album. But you are definitely going to get more “Bang!” for your buck with this album than a lot of the bands that are actually getting airplay these days.
You can hear samples of Bang! by clicking on the song titles below!

Luke Morley – Guitars & Vocals

Amoral is a five-piece again! Since the announcement of Niko leaving we’ve received tons of applications from singers all over the world. As we mentioned earlier, we wanted to find a guy who was not only able to handle the growling of the old songs, but who also had a strong melodic voice. Well, little did we know that we’d end up with one of the most talented vocalists around! Ari’s merits as a singer are well known (at least here in Finland), but it might surprise a lot of people that the dude can also growl with the best of them! And the fact remains that he truly was the strongest candidate from all those who applied for the job.
Being the sneaky bastards that we are, we have been writing and practising hard for a long while now while keeping low profile, and we’re happy to announce that the material for the 4th Amoral album is just about ready! The recording will start next month and will go on through January. The album should be out before the summer. Of course, we’ll keep you guys posted on updates.
Now, before some of you oldschool Amoral maniacs condemn us to hell: No, we’re not going power metal on your asses. The trademark riffs are still there. The little quirkiness. The “fuck everybody” attitude. And most importantly, the songs are just as strong as you’ve come to expect from us. Stronger, actually. You could clearly see on Reptile Ride already that we were eager to push our music to a more melodic direction, and the next natural step was to go all the way with the vocals. This is a new beginning for us, and we truly believe our best work is still ahead of us.
P.S. Those of you who are not familiar with Ari’s work yet, check out his Myspace site.

Asked recently by Billboard why NIckelback opted to wait to tour until next year, frontman Chad Kroeger said, “We’ve been bitten too many times by going out too early. I’m always adamant about making sure there’s at least a true rock song from the band that’s gone to radio, just to give a more diverse selection of music for people to listen to.
“We’ve been consulting with some people; I’m interested to see someone else’s take on what this band could look like live, and we’ve had some real interesting stuff come back,” he continued. “I think we’re gonna try some stuff that, believe it or not, no one has ever done live before.”

Tom Zutaut, the man who signed GUNS N’ ROSES to Geffen Recordsback in the mis-’80s, was unceremoniously booted out of the “Chinese Democracy” listening party, held at the Roxy Theater in West Hollywood, California last Tuesday (November 18).
Tom tells Classic Rock magazine, “Yeah, sadly it is true that I was escorted out of the Roxy by a beefy security guy just prior to the last three songs of the playback. I did stand on the sidewalk and hear the last three anyway.
“I believe that love and hate are a complicated thing but ultimately the same thing. I love Axl and think ‘Chinese Democracy’ is a genius body of music. Although I had heard most of the album in an unfinished form six-seven years ago, and more recently through some of the leaks, I really wanted to hear it played back over a loud PA in its final form as imagined by its creator, W. Axl Rose.
“It is sad and disappointing to me that those around Axl would lie to him to fuel his hatred towards me with imaginary events used to drive a wedge between us. I love him deeply, will always love him and wish only the greatest success to one of the world’s last true creative musical sparks with a god-given voice. I am proud of my contributions to his career and am always there for him should he one day become enlightened to the truth of what surrounds him. It is also sad that he doesn’t mention the hard work I put in on my short involvement with ‘Chinese Democracy’with even a ‘Thank You’ considering lesser players are credited or thanked in the liner notes — even those who ridiculed him, belittled and made fun of him behind his back while I defended his genius ’til those around him poisoned him against me with distortions and lies.
“I wear his hatred as a badge of honor as it would be far worse for him not to care at all.”
The surviving members of MELDRUM — the band formed by ex-PHANTOM BLUE guitarist Michelle Meldrum, who died on May 21 as a result of a cystic growth that had restricted oxygen and blood flow to her brain, rendering her braindead — have completed work on the group’s third album (for which Michelle recorded her tracks prior to her passing), entitled“Lifer”.
“Lifer” stands as a proud tribute to Michelle, who wrote the material for the CD with drummer Gene Hoglan (DARK ANGEL, DEATH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD), along with new members Laura Christine (bass) and Michele Madden (vocals).
“Lifer” is sonically different in direction than anything previously released by the band. With new life, and new talent, this album has carried the talents these four have to a higher level.
Commented Hoglan: “Let me say this: Never have I obsessed over the recording of any album I’ve been involved in as I have with MELDRUM‘s latest. The tragic circumstances that took Michelle from us also provided us with a laser-sharp focus to record the most amazing album we could.Michele Madden, Laura Christine, and hell, even Chicken, our engineer, put forth performances of a lifetime, with each member’s full love and respect going into every nuance of every song. Not only to honorMichelle, but to also lay down some bad-ass music, which was ultimately what she stood for… what MELDRUM stands for. I think the songs speak for themselves, and I, for one, have never been prouder to be a part of a family, let alone a project such as this. Metal with balls. Crank it up, indeed.”
“Lifer” is scheduled for release in early 2009. MELDRUM plans to unveil previews from their studio sessions on their Myspace in coming weeks, with news on the new release, music videos and tours forthcoming.
It isn’t every day when you get to talk to a guitar legend like Yngwie Malmsteen. I have listened to his music since I was a teenager, and never imagined that I would one day get the honor to talk to him. I have heard lots of unpleasant things about Yngwie over the years, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when I interviewed him. What I found was a person who was very easy to talk to, and at times quite humorous. He was a total class act during our interview session. We talked about his new album “Perpetual Flame”, his history and influences, and his opinion on music today.
HRH: How did you start working with Ripper Owens?
Yngwie Malmsteen: Well, what happened was I did this album a little different than normal. Normally you have like a cycle where you make a record, you go on tour for that record, then you come home and start writing songs for a record and do another tour. This time around I was just writing songs as I was touring for the last album. I eventually had enough music to cut real songs. I went in recorded like 30 songs. Then I went back on tour and so forth. The songs all sounded different when I came back. Everytime I came back I wrote some guitars, I wrote some bass, I wrote some lyrics. Eventually the songs started taking shape so much that they had names and they were finished. Songs like Death Dealer and Live to Fight (Another Day) and so forth. I realized that the singer that I had at the time (Doogie White) he would not fit the new songs, so Tim’s name came up. I invited him down to Miami. I said hey do you want to come down and sing with me a bit. He came down, I showed him a couple of songs, and that was it.
HRH: You worked with him once before on the Bat Head Soup CD right?
Yngwie Malmsteen: Yeah, but that was different. I was in one studio and he was in another one.
HRH: Ripper’s voice really seems to compliment your style of playing. “Death Dealer” and “Red Devil” are two of the coolest songs I have heard by you in quite some time. What was the recording process like for Perpetual Flame?
Yngwie Malmsteen: Thank you. It was a little different because I needed drums. I went on tour. I came back, I had guitars and bass recorded and lots of lyrics. I came back again added keyboards. I had my Pro tools on my laptop and I was hanging out with a guy who had a string section who put some strings on it. All of the recording was done and Tim came in and just sang the lyrics I had written, and that was it. It was pretty simple. It was done in sections.
HRH: How does Ripper compare to past singers that you have worked with?
Yngwie Malmsteen: His voice really fits in with almost exactly what I hear in my head. When I write songs like “Death Dealer” and “Damnation Game” I know what I am looking for. That is why I decided Doogie wasn’t going to cut it. I feel that Tim fits right in.
HRH: This album is a lot heavier than the last couple of discs you have put out. Was that your intention when you were writing the music?
Yngwie Malmsteen: Not in the beginning, but the songs started coming together, and I knew that is what we were going with. In the beginning, I was kind of letting it flow . That was one of the reasons why I changed singers too, because the songs were starting to get so heavy, that there was no way that Doogie would have fit in.
HRH: You have a pretty large collection of guitars. Which guitars did you use while recording Perpetual Flame?
Yngwie Malmsteen: I used a lot of different ones. Fender Strats, and different bases of course and two Marshalls. The Fender guitars I used on this album from the late 60’s and the Marshall amps are also very old.
HRH: What are your Tour plans for the new album?
Yngwie Malmsteen: We have done Europe in the summer, not so much for the album, but we just toured. We did five weeks in America, by no long shot was this complete tour but it was good. We will be going to South America, Japan, Australia, America and Europe again. It is going to be a big tour.
HRH: There are quite a few festivals popping up in the United States. Do you see yourself performing at one of the new musical festivals like Rock Gone Wild, Rocklahoma or Rock the Bayou?
Yngwie Malmsteen: Yeah, sure why not, that is always cool.
HRH: The number of guitarists that cite you as an influence is pretty much endless. Who inspired you to pick up the guitar and make music such a huge part of your life?
Yngwie Malmsteen: I grew up in a very musical family. My older brother and sister they were very good musicians. I was the youngest. I got my first guitar when I was five years old. On the news they showed the day that Jimi Hendrix died. They showed him setting his guitar on fire at Monterey Pop. I saw him burn his guitar and I knew that is what I wanted to do. I started playing the guitar the same day. A year later or so I got a record from sister. She gave me the Deep Purple Fireball album. I thought it was very cool. When I grew up in Sweden there was nothing there. It was completely empty from rock and roll and music or anything like that. There was classical and Jazz, but nothing like what it was here. The impact of hearing Purple was very big on me. I really like that. The biggest influence on my music are Bach, Vivaldi and Niccolò Paganini. If you listen to my stuff you will hear it.
HRH: If you could give advice to any young guitar players out there, what would you tell them?
Yngwie Malmsteen: It all depends on what they want to achieve. If they want to achieve greatness and be like something that is out of the ordinary. It is a lot of hardwork. There are no shortcuts to that. Obviously, if they wanted to learn how to play, they can learn bits and things and carry on. It all depends on what they want to do. If they want to be serious, there is a lot of hard work involved.
HRH: There have been a lot of classic hard rock and metal acts reunite over the last few years. Ron Keel has recently announced the reunion of KEEL for several live shows next year. Can you see yourself doing a Steeler or Alcatrazz reunion in the near future?
Yngwie Malmsteen: I have been contacted a lot about that. I don’t know. I will never say never.
HRH: What is your opinion on the current guitarists of today?
Yngwie Malmsteen: I haven’t really kept track of them. I am so extremely busy with what I am doing myself. When I am not playing music I am usually doing other things. Playing around with my Ferraris and playing Tennis and things like that. What I understand there is a new group of kids that are very serious about playing which is great, I think that is a good thing.
HRH: Are you still a big Ferrari Fan?
Yngwie Malmsteen: (Passionately) Ohh Yeah!
HRH: Have you seen the new Spider Model that has just been released?
Yngwie Malmsteen: Yeah, but I am more into the vintage Ferarris.
HRH:Why do you think hard rock/metal was able to maintain it’s popularity in Europe and Asia but not here in the states?
Yngwie Malmsteen: I am not even sure about that. What I do know is Rock and roll and metal never goes away ever. It took the back seat in America in the 90’s. In Japan and South America it was still really big. I never followed trends so I don’t know the exact function of them. I think there must be somebody in league to changing things. When the glam metal thing of the late 80’s became to glammy, then instead of having two bottles of hair spray in your hair, it became better not to wash your hair at all. To me its all trend stuff. I don’t follow that stuff. I just do what I feel is the right thing. I don’t know what the reason is for that. Its not fashion.
HRH: Did your involvement in the G3 Tour with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai help get your music back out there in the U.S.?
Yngwie Malmsteen: It had some impact, sure, yeah. I think that it helped all three of us, but I think the most important thing now, that you can see nowadays are kids are being introduced to this music through video games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero. This seems to be a big influence on kids. Its a new thing to them.
HRH: What do you think about the new generation of music fans being introduced to hard rock and metal through games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band?
Yngwie Malmsteen: When we were younger it was Radio and MTV. It is just a different way of getting it. If they have a game that has rock and roll in it, that is going to introduce the kids to the music. That is good. It is cool.
HRH: Are their any plans for your songs to be added in future editions of the games?
Yngwie Malmsteen: I think so yeah. I am pretty sure that is happening right now. (A few days after our interview, it was announced that some of the songs from Perpetual Flame would be available for download in the game Rockband.)
HRH: Your son Antonio is 10 now right? Has he taken on your passion for music yet?
Yngwie Malmsteen: Yeah, Not in the same way that I did. When I grew up there was no TV, nothing. The guitar could be my whole life. The kids today have internet and TV and games and all that stuff. When he does pick up the guitar, he is a natural for sure. For sure he is going to play. I was so extreme, I was playing 24/7 all my life. That was bizarre anyway, kind of like a (laughs) a circus freak you know.
HRH: There is a new line of Yngwie Malsteen Play Loud tribute guitars from Fender coming out next week. What you can you tell us about those?
Yngwie Malmsteen: Fender had made my guitars for 20 years now. The model has been improved on and updated. It is just fantastic, that is why I love to play it. This is a special series of just 100 pieces that is an exact replica of the guitar that I brought with me from Sweden when I was a teenager. It has the exact same rust particle scratch, feels the same, smells the same. It is amazing. I have never seen anything like it my life. It is scary, it is frightening. It is limited to 100 pieces.
HRH: I saw how the even mimicked your bite marks on the guitar, and wondered how they did that.
Yngwie Malmsteen: I wondered if they had some witchcraft going on there. (laughs)
HRH: You were recently inducted to Guitar Center’s Rockwalk in Hollywood, what was that experience like?
Yngwie Malmsteen: Very Bizarre (laughs). I have time to reflect on it now. Apparently it is in the street already. The next time I go there I will see it. I remember walking those streets as teenager. Its amazing. I don’t know what else to say. Thank you, I am honored.
HRH: Is there anything you would like to tell your fans in closing?
Yngwie Malmsteen: I would like to say thank you. I would like everyone to check out my new record Perpetual Flame. If they have heard my stuff before they will dig it. If they haven’t I hope they will dig it. Thank you for the support for twenty years. God Bless You All! God Bless America!
