Remembering “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott
Today is the 4th Anniversary of the death of Pantera/Damageplan guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott. I still remember hearing about his murder on the evening news. Not only was I stunned that this happened during a club show but it was also one that I had been to in the past. I was a fan of Darrell’s while he was in Pantera. He helped make some amazing music during the Pantera years, and the heavy metal community lost one hell of an awesome guitar player.
If you have stories about “Dimebag”, feel free to share them in the comments.
Rest in Peace Darrell. You are missed!
The songs below are how I remember Dimebag best.
Pantera – Cowboy’s From Hell
Pantera – Walk
Pantera – Cemetary Gates
Pantera – This Love

I can still remember when I heard this horrific news, it seemed to hit me like a freight train. I was watching tv as I got ready for work when the reporter calmly said that Dime had been killed. I fell to me knees, looked to the sky and asked why. And after fighting back the rage and the tears called in sick to work, opened bottle after bottle of Crown and blared Pantera from my stereo until I passed out. To Rita, Vinnie, and the rest of his family and friends words cannot say how sorry I am. I only wish I could have cut the bastard’s throat myself for what he did. DIME, YOU MAY BE GONE BUT WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU, rest in peace.
I hear ya man. The loss of Dime in metal, compares to the loss of Lennon, Hendrix, Morrison, Rhoads. Another musical genius taken from us much too early.

No offense to john lennon or his millons of fans worldwide, but my main genre is hardcore, metal, crossover, you know alll of our liking….So I feel like I lost someone who had a influence in my life of music, life does go on ,but all of our lives changed in our musical realm when that piece of shit took dimes life, and although we all suffered the loss, no one more than rita, vinnie, and the rest of his family…..god bless the abbott family for giving us their son, brother to us for a little while, shot of CROWN AND COKE/ R.I.P. DIME…..THE BEST AXEMAN OF OUR METAL GENRE EVER, ASK THE BEST ALIVE EDDIE VAN HALEN ……
My favorite piece of memorabilia is a Dimebag guitar pick that I fought a fat guy in the mosh pit for during the STEEL tour [Slayer opened—amazing show]. You can still see my blood stain on the pick. Dime was truly one of the all-time greats.
Forever will the world of metal be changed by the loss of the very Wizard of Metal. His spell will echo in the halls of eternity.
When I was 17 years old I went to the only Pantera show I ever had the chance to see. It was during the Reinventing The Steel tour, and I came out to the Tsongas arena to see my favorite guitarist. During one part of the show Phil was yelling about something into the microphone and at a quiet moment I yelled to Dime, who was standing about 30 feet away. He must have heard me because he turned, looked directly at me, and pointed at me with the three fingers of his right hand that weren’t holding his pick. That moment really meant a lot to me.
Can you BELIEVE that both John Lennon and Dimebag died on this day? Jim Morrison and Greg Allman were born this day too, so maybe that’s a silver lining.
I was living in Ireland when I heard the news. My brother, who never liked metal that much and always gave me shit about Pantera, sent me the New York Times brief on his death. I thought it was a joke at first but realized otherwise quickly.
There’s something about metal that draws violent, angry people, and after reading Nathan Gale’s story, my feelings about it changed a lot. Then again, John Lennon spoke about peace and love, so I guess you never can tell what brings out the crazies.
It happened right around the corner from my apartment at a place that I go to all the time. My fiance and I know the owners. We were supposed to be at that show. We had plenty of friends who were there and luckily made it out alive. I will NEVER forget the moment I heard it on the news that night. All I did that night was hope that Dimebag didn’t die. I woke up the next morning to the horrific news of his death. I blasted Pantera in my car on my way to work and cried and cried and cried. It still hurts. RIP to all of those who died in that tragedy.
I’m also paying ” rememberance ” to John Lennon today,..but I do recall hearing the news of Dimebag’s passing on the morning of 12/9/04. It was reported on Imus In The Morning on MSNBC. I coudln’t believe another lunatic stole another legend on December 8th. R.I.P Dime & John.
It is one of those days where you will always remember where you were and what you were doing. For me I had woke up the morning after and was checking my email and I saw the headline on Yahoo’s news total shock does not even begin to describe my reaction.
a really great story, not related to him at all, but one of his riffs, from the song “Walk”, my bicycle made that riff sound when i was hitting a hill, make sense, aha
