The Who – At Kilburn: 1977 – DVD (Release Year – 2008)

lores-dvd-cover The Who is a band who I would have liked to have seen live when they were in their prime. I was too young to catch them in the late 70’s when they were at their peak of their popularity.

The Who’s new DVD, “At Kilburn 1977” shows me just how great this band was live.  The sleeve on this DVD calls this disc the holy grail for The Who fans, and I would have to agree.

I didn’t expect the 30 year old footage to be very good, but I was surprised at the quality of the video and audio of this show.  This was the first time I have ever seen the late Keith Moon behind the drum kit.  His performance shines on this DVD. Not only is Keith Moon an incredible drummer, but he sings a ton of the back up vocals as well.  What an amazing talent this guy was.

The Who is obviously a lot more than just Mr. Moon.  I got a kick out of seeing Pete Townshend rocking out on stage with his crazy dancing (with guitar in hand), and I really enjoyed the vocals of Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle.

The video footage on the second DVD is pretty bad quality.  The video was shot in December 1969, and sat in The Who vault for years.  Even though the video quality is poor, it is still worth watching, just to see The Who in their prime. Having the first recorded live performance of  The Who rock opera “Tommy” is worth the price of admission all by itself.

If you are a fan of The Who, this is a must see, must own DVD.  If you have never seen The Who before, this DVD will make you a fan!  Buy it!
