THE EYES OF A SOLDIER
Concept Album Inspired By Veterans’ Stories Examines The Consequences Of War
From The Soldiers’ Perspective
Album Available March 31 From Atco/Rhino; U.S. Tour To Begin April 16 In Seattle
Queensrÿche envisions war through the eyes of a soldier with the band’s twelfth studio release, the epic concept album AMERICAN SOLDIER. The ambitious album encompasses a dozen songs inspired by numerous interviews with veterans conducted by Geoff Tate, the group’s singer and chief songwriter, who was intent on telling their story using their words.
After speaking with soldiers who served in various conflicts — from World War II to Iraq — Tate turned their firsthand experiences from the frontlines into an unflinching musical examination of the life of a solider and the consequences of war. AMERICAN SOLDIER will be available from Atco/Rhino on March 31 for a suggested list price of $18.98 (CD) and $9.99 (digital).
Tate, Michael Wilton (guitar), Ed Jackson (bass) and Scott Rockenfield (drums) recorded the album in 2008 over the course of nine months. The idea for AMERICAN SOLDIER, Tate says, came from hearing stories from fans that are veterans, as well as his own father, who served in both Korea and Vietnam. “My father was a career military man, but until very recently he never spoke about what he went through. I think that reticence is true of a lot of veterans, which means most people never truly understand what it means to be a soldier at war. Hearing what he and some of our fans have endured made me want to share their stories with the world. This is an album about the soldiers, for the soldiers, as told by the soldiers themselves.”
Those stories resonate at the heart of AMERICAN SOLDIER, imbuing each song with vivid details about both the emotional and physical impacts of war, evoking war zone battles (“Middle Of Hell”), sacrifice (“The Killer”), loss (“If I Were King”), the longing for home (“Remember Me”), and adjusting to society after returning from war (“Man Down!”).
Tate recorded many of his interviews with the soldiers, and some dialogue from these discussions is mixed into several of tracks, allowing the soldiers’ own words to help tell their compelling stories. The band also brought a few of the soldiers into the studio with them to record vocals. The verses of the track “Unafraid” feature the voices of Chris Devine, a Vietnam veteran, and Sean Lenahan, a veteran of Somalia, recalling their war experiences while Tate provides the anthemic chorus. Also making a guest vocal appearance is Tate’s 10-year-old daughter Emily on the gripping duet “Home Again,” which examines the emotional toll of war from two perspectives, with Geoff singing from the soldier’s point of view and his daughter singing from the viewpoint of the child left behind.
Making the album, Tate says, was an enlightening process. “I was surprised to learn how little has changed through the generations. I spoke with a Vietnam vet whose experience wasn’t all that different from a soldier who fought in Somalia almost 30 years later. But what surprised me the most was how antiwar most soldiers are. To me, that makes their sacrifices even more moving.”
Soon after the release of AMERICAN SOLDIER, Queensrÿche will launch an extensive spring tour of the U.S., with international dates to follow later in 2009. The shows will be presented in three suites, with the band performing sets from AMERICAN SOLDIER, RAGE FOR ORDER, and EMPIRE. The first date of the tour will be April 16 at Snoqualmie Casino in the band’s hometown of Seattle.

Sat – February 28 – House of Blues – Los Angeles, CA
Mon – March 02 – House of Blues – Anaheim, CA
These three masters of the electric guitar will bring their unique styles, best songs, and most inspired solos to you LIVE. Each will have their own 45 minute set accompanied by their band, followed by an unforgettable encore jam with all three guitarists onstage at one time! Every show will rock, inspire your imagination, celebrate and remind you all why we are all part of… THE GUITAR GENERATION~
Paul Gilbert burst onto the guitar scene with his band RACER X when he was only 19. His astonishing technical prowess and imaginative use of the Makita power drill instantly gained him a reputation as a Founding Father of Shred Guitar. Paul went on to form “super-group”, MR. BIG and enjoyed No. 1 chart success and massive world tours. Paul has also released over 10 solo CDs, and his legendary instructional DVDs are revered as the best in the business.
Known for his extreme virtuoso on-stage playing, passionate musicality, and quick “tongue in cheek” wit, Paul’s live performances have become legendary. In the past year, he toured with “G3” (featuring Joe Satriani and John Petrucci) and also supported Satriani on a sold out UK tour.
Paul had such a remarkable time on the G3 Tour that he was eager to get back to the USA and create a stunning and unique show featuring his two impeccable fellow guitarist friends, George Lynch and Richie Kotzen….and the GUITAR GENERATION TOUR was born!
Inventing, re-inventing and pushing the limits of rock guitar is the lifelong pursuit of guitarist George Lynch. From his work with Exciter, Dokken, Lynch Mob his new band, Souls Of We, George is revered as one of the most influential rock guitarists of all time. George has also designed a new line of guitar products that give guitarists around the world the opportunity and capability to push their own limits.
With a career that spans nearly 30 years, George is one of a long line of guitarists to come from the California hard rock world. But one distinction that separates him from the rest of the pack is that he remains to be musically relevant. For some, success was fleeting but none have left their indelible mark like Lynch has. He has survived the shortcomings of the tangled music business and the changing tides in musical trends.
Much of George Lynch’s success is credited to guitarmanship; however his song writing helped propel five highly successful Dokken albums from 1983 to 1988 to the top of the charts and won him recognition as one of the most influential rock guitarists in modern music. Another distinction that separates him from others of this genre is that his guitar playing earned Dokken a Grammy nomination in 1989 for Best Rock Instrumental for the now legendary, “Mr.Scary.” With the new decade came a different George Lynch in the 1990s. A bolder stylist and more knowledgeable guitarist was found in him as he formed the band Lynch Mob. Recording two albums and going back on the road to support them kept Lynch in the public eye and garnered him rave reviews. But he was yearning for a further approach to the guitar. While still promoting his work with Lynch Mob, he began work on a solo endeavor titled, “Sacred Groove” which demonstrated Lynch’s capacity to display different musical and guitar styles.
Lynch will always be creatively busy while constantly evolving as a musician. As Lynch continues to broaden his musical scope, he will continue to influence fans for years to come as a player and song writer who is always on top of his game!
Richie Kotzen erupted onto the music scene as a guitar virtuoso at age 17. He recorded his first solo album on Shrapnel Records with four more solo albums to follow. By 19 Kotzen was approached by glam metal band Poison in which he wrote the #4 MTV Video and top 20 Billboard hit “STAND” on the Native Tongue album hitting platinum status soon thereafter. After Poison, Kotzen continued recording on various labels including Geffen, Shrapnel and JVC and joined a stint with famed bassist Stanley Clarke. Later that year Kotzen joined Mr. Big best known for their #1 hit song “JUST TO BE WITH YOU” stepping in for shred guitar guru Paul Gilbert.
Known for his soulful singing and captivating stage shows, Kotzen continues to solo on massive world tours. Kotzens popularity has grown to astronomical proportions in over 7 countries, where he regularly tours, landing him the opening slot as the opening act for the legendary Rolling Stones a Bigger Bang Tour in Japan.
Kotzen has released 17 solo albums, 9 collaborative/band albums, an instructional & home DVD landing him to the top of a multi-platinum career.
By invitation, Kotzen joined Paul Gilbert on stage at the House of Blues on Sunset Strip, where they tore down the house separately and collectively for an encore that proved big guitars and virtuoso players still rule the rock stage. In excitement to repeat this amazing synergy Kotzen accepted to join fellow guitarists and friends, Paul Gilbert and George Lynch for THE GUITAR GENERATION!
Get your tickets now – you never know who will show up on the stage and join this triple threat in action. For ticket information go to www.hob.com and info on the artists go to www.paulgilbert.com, www.georgelynch.com and www.richiekotzen.com

When Guitar Hero: Aerosmith was announced early in 2008, I just rolled my eyes and thought “great Aerosmith is jumping on the Guitar Hero bandwagon”. I must admit I wasn’t very excited about this game.
When the opportunity to pick this game up for half price (with wireless guitar) for the Playstation 3, I couldn’t pass it up. Oddly enough, a game that was just an afterthought at one point for me, has quickly become one of my favorite games for the Playstation 3.
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith does a good job of mixing Aerosmith classic songs along with tunes from bands that influenced, or were influenced by Aerosmith. Unlike some of the past Guitar Hero games, the majority of the songs are master recordings by Aerosmith, and the original bands that recorded them. This makes the gaming experience a much more enjoyable one.
There are also a bunch of live interview clips with Aerosmith, talking about their random history. I enjoyed seeing those brief clips in the game.
The songs in this game are a lot of fun to play, and the guitar dual with Joe Perry is a blast. If you are an Aerosmith fan, you are going to love this game. If you have never listened to an Aerosmith song in your life, this game will make you a fan. I highly recommend this extremely fun and addictive video game for the Playstation 3.

“Sacred Oath,” the self-titled third studio album from the legendary cult power metal band, was produced and engineered by Rob Thorne at his studio Angel Thorne Music in Connecticut.
Says Thorne, “We wrote, tracked, and mixed this record in 12 weeks, about one-fifth the time we spent with Darkness Visible. The band is just on fire, riding on the high we experienced with the successful tour and the release of the live disc.”
Favorite track on the album? “Ooooh,” says Thorne, “I love so many tracks on this disc, but I’d have to say Counting Zeros is my choice TODAY (laughs). We’ve always been a concept-oriented band, and that song really sums up the lyrical theme of this record.”
When pressed on whether this is a concept-album, Thorne smiles. “Two powers could be at it again.”
The band is giving away a free download of the first single from the new album – “Blood Storm.” Simply register at www.sacredoath.net.

This band seems to have embraced the NWOBHM era of metal, and have reproduced a sound that will have most metal fans, young and old banging their heads.
At times I have found singer Olaf Wikstrand’s vocals a little pitchy, but the music is so good on “Into The Night”, all if forgiven quickly. Enforcer taps into the awesome early 80’s metal sounds of Metallica and Iron Maiden to deliver a crushingly cool metal feast for your ears.
“Into the Night” isn’t a long listening experience. This CD clocks in at a tick over 35 minutes. It is so good though, I am guessing you will want to keep playing this one over and over. This disc isn’t breaking any new ground musically, but if you are fan of early 80’s thrash, you are sure to love this disc. I love the passion and the energy that comes out in the songs. It might be old school 80’s metal riffs that drives the music here, but I could care less. My only regret is that I didn’t get a copy of this CD sooner.

In my opinion, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry are the Yin and Yang of Aerosmith. The band can not succeed without both members. Joe Perry is one of the best rock guitarists of all time, and Steven Tyler is one of the best singers to grace hard rock music.
With that being said, the early eighties was a dark period for Aerosmith, and the band forged ahead without Joe Perry or Brad Whitford (although Whitford did play on “Lighting Strikes”). The rhythm section of Aerosmith was securely in tact for this album, as Joey Kramer and Tom Hamilton were still in the band. “Rock In A Hard Place” still has quite a bit of that Aerosmith groove, but this disc is far from the band’s best effort.
When it comes right down to it, the great thing about Aerosmith is their vast collection of great hard rock songs. When I dusted this disc off to give it another chance, I hoped to find a couple of classic Aerosmith tunes on this disc. After two or three plays, none of these song stick with me very much. It isn’t that they are band, they just aren’t very memorable. The best cuts are “Jailbait”, “Lightning Strikes”, and the title track “Rock and In A Hard Place (Cheshire Cat)”. While I like the music, even the best tunes don’t live up to Aerosmith’s past works.
“Rock In A Hard Place” isn’t the worst Aerosmith album, but in my opinion it is just an o.k. disc, and one for the Aerosmith diehard fans only.

MY WICKED TWIN are the new four piece rock act featuring guitarist/vocalist Brent Doerner (ex-HELIX), bassist Mike Uzelac (aka UZI, ex-Helix), guitarist/vocalist Shane Schedler and drummer/vocalist Brian Doerner (ex-Helix, SAGA).
About their new CD the band state, “This is an unusual rock production – over a year in the making. This is guitar rock. The melodies dance with the lyrics, the lyrics rock with the music. It’s downtown, sexy, and a little bad. All 12 songs are strong – no “B” sides. It’s all killer and no filler.”

Chris Cornell’s long-awaited Timbaland produced album, Scream is reaching stores on 3/10 and he’s been keeping busy rehearsing with his new band and talking with his fans on his blog. Since the break-up of his legendary group Soundgarden back in the late 90’s, the frontman hasn’t picked up an electric guitar but according to his latest blog entry on www.ChrisCornell.com, he’s thinking of busting them out for his upcoming tour:
“Hi people. Here is an open question. Since I got my guitars back I have been considering playing guitar live again. Who thinks I should pick it up again? I play guitar all day every day as I am always working on new songs. Let me know if you think I should hit it live. The king is dead. God save the king.”
Chris Cornell will be performing on Jimmy Kimmel live tonight, Friday, January 23rd- and free tickets are up for grabs. If you’re in the Los Angeles area, come along and see his outdoor mini-concert – tickets and all other details are available HERE. It’s a great chance to catch Chris and his band live before they head out to Europe for four exclusive shows next month.

“OF FUNGI AND FOE” is the expansion of material Claypool has recorded over the past few years for the video game “Mushroom Men” and the motion picture “Pig Hunt”. Being inspired by these 2 projects Claypool decided to keep creating and turn it into an album. The song Mushroom Men on this release is a more in depth version of the theme song from the video game. Additionally a jam session with Gogol Bordello’s charismatic front-man Eugene Hutz turned into the track “Bite Out Of Life”. The band is comprised of Les Claypool on bass/vocals, Paulo Baldi on Drums (Cake), Mike Dillon on Percussion (Ani Difranco), and Sam Bass on Cello (Deadweight).

VOLBEAT will unleash their 2nd U.S. album, Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood, March 17th on Mascot Records U.S.A. This new rock-a-billy metal masterpiece arrives on the tail end of their successful 2008 release Rock The Rebel/Metal The Devil.
With the word “Originality” being a much abused word in the world of rock-‘n-roll – It is very appropriate to describe VOLBEAT. The four piece combines influences from the 50’s to current mosh-pit metal that puts you in a death grip. It’s this imposing blend that has created the U.S.A. to become diehard fans. The new CD also contains a respectful and powerful interpretation of I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry originally by Hank Williams Sr.
The title Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood refers to a story that connects seven of the thirteen (official) songs on the album: Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood, Find That Soul, Maybellene I Hofteholder, Still Counting, Back To Prom, Light A Way and A Broken Man And The Dawn. It’s a tale about a travelling band whose leader is a man that once got shot in the desert and left for dead. During the bands tour he went on a mission to find the mysterious killer that put seven bullets in his body. While travelling from city to city the band ends up in a small town called Ten House City performing for just a handful of people in the local bar. The songs offer observations of the people in the rundown venue, made by the bandleader. This storyline will continue to be a connecting theme and developed as VOLBEAT writes future albums.
While the whole concept of ‘Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood’ is intriguing; it’s above all a knock out of a hard rock/metal album. “It’s one of our goals to improve every time”, explains singer and guitar player Michael Poulsen. “That’s the main reason of our existence. Every tour had to be better than the previous one. We also want every album to be better than the one before. We wanted to improve on the song writing with Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood. I think we succeeded.” VOLBEAT is comprised of vocalist/guitarist Michael Poulsen, guitarist Thomas Bredahl, bassist Anders Kjølholm and drummer Jon Larsen.
Here is the simple truth, any band that has the balls to cover David Allan Coe’s “The Ride” is going to get my attention. I am either going to laugh and then curse the band for screwing up one of the best songs in the history of music or I am going to sit in awe and applaud the band for delivering a worthy version. Fortunately for Columbus Ohio’s Snowblynd I am applauding them, not only do they deliver a worthy version, they deliver a killer version. Now until a week ago I had never heard the term “Motor City Dixie”, but it is fast becoming my favorite saying thanks to Snowblynd. These guys maybe from the midwest but they know how to play some great southern rock. Vocalist Brad Williams, guitarists Gregory Wylde and Smitty, along with bassist Joe Viers, drummer Barry Damron, and on Hammond B3 Organ Nate “Ass” Hollman sound like they walked right out of the swamps and into the rock n roll spotlight on their ’07 release “Dirty Water”.
After hearing “Dirty Water”, “Little Miss Misery”, and “Blood, Guts, & Gasoline” on the bands’ myspace page I knew I had to buy this album and damn was I glad I did. It is filled with some damn good sleazy Southern rock from beginning to end and Snowblynd are not afraid to wear their influences on their sleeve. The Black Crowes, Lynyrd Skynyrd, a little Buckcherry, it is all here on “Dirty Water” not only with the four songs I’ve already mentioned but also on tracks like “Carry On”, “Lust N’ Liquor”, “Cryin’ Shame”, “She Believed” & “One Time Ain’t Enough”. There is not one disappointing song on “Dirty Water”, it has me already looking forward to the next Snowblynd album. Hopefully I won’t have to wait long.
You can check the band out at http://www.myspace.com/snowblynd
You can also purchase “Dirty Water” at CDBaby.com http://cdbaby.com/cd/snowblynd
It is also available at I-Tunes.
Snowblynd is one band fans of Southern rock do not want to miss out on.

With its shares of stock worth little more than a dime, Sirius XM will reportedly impose a rate increase on March 11th. The company will seek an extra $2 per additional subscription per user, plus charge $2.99 to stream Sirius XM online. The latter fee comes with an upside: all Internet subscriptions will stream with a 128k “premium” feed. According to customer support reps, current Sirius XM users can lock in at their current rates for the next three years if they re-up before March 11th.
Whether the price hikes have any effect on programming remains to be seen. While the increase isn’t exactly wallet-draining, it’s just another straw on the camel’s back for those Sirius XM who told Rolling Stone in November that they were upset with the company since their respective stations merged into one entity in November 2008. Many listeners’ favorite channels and genres were causalities of the station-merge, and customers complained of too much song repetition and DJ bantering.
Despite their huge, anti-trust-avoiding merger back in July 2008, Sirius XM has struggled to climb out of its cavernous debt. The current economic situation and a slow holiday season likely didn’t help Sirius XM’s problems, so the rate hikes are likely an attempt to help the company stay afloat. Fact is, radio itself is a bad business to be in right now, as even terrestrial radio suffered its worst year since 1954 in 2008. So if things are that bad when the radio is free, imagine how bad it is when you have to pay for it. Still, we’re hoping our ordeal with Artie Lange and “The Howard Stern Show” these past few days have at least helped sell a couple radios.
