Heaven’s Basement – S/T (Release Year – 2008)

heavensbasementI have been a fan of England’s Heaven’s Basement from the beginning, when they were known as both Hurricane Party and Roadstar. But I think the music they have created as Heaven’s Basement is by far superior to anything  they have released in the past. Their self titled 6 song e.p. is simply excellent, it has everything a fan of hard rock would want, killer songs, killer hooks, and solos with enough attitude to fill a large room.

Everything gets started with “Tear Your Heart Out”, this song is like a punch in the face that turns into a beating. Bassist Rob Randell lays down a great groove with drummer Chris Rivers as Sid Glover and Jonny Rocker are assaulting you with their twin guitars. Richie Hevanz’s voice sounds like he lives on a steady diet of whiskey and cigarettes and it is a perfect match for the band. This song is a classic example of drop the top, crank the stereo, and sing along at the top of your lungs as you are flying down the road.

“Executioner’s Day” keeps us in the same frame of mind, it may be a little heavier than “Tear Your Heart Out” but it still has a killer groove and Sid Glover absolutely smokes this solo.

If you have been paying attention you should have noticed how many times the word groove pops up and while all six songs on this release are filled with groove but none as much as “Graduation”. Randell and Rivers are absolutely awesome on this song with Glover close behind.

“Saint Routine” and “Fear of Getting Off” both follow the same recipe as the first three songs with the same outstanding results. To wrap up the guys go out just like they came in with all guns blazing with “Reign on My Parade”.

The only complaint I have about this release is there aren’t more songs, especially “No Pity” and “Can’t Let Go” which you can hear on both the band’s myspace page and the official web site. But I understand them not being included because they were written and recorded after the e.p. was released. If this was a full album it would be amazing. But some songs are better than none and this e.p. makes me more excited about the release of a full album from Richie Hevanz and the fellas.

You can BUY the e.p. at this link http://www.backstreet-merch.com/bands/hvnbt/product.asp?item=hvnbt03 and you can check out all of these songs and more at http://www.heavensbasement.com/jukebox.php or the band’s Myspace page www.myspace.com/heavensbasementofficial

You can add Heaven’s Basement to the list of bands that are bringing hard rock back to the spotlight and of the bands on that list Heaven’s Basement may damn well be the best of the bunch.
