After three well-received albums, and a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance for the song “Colony of Birchmen” off Blood Mountain, Mastodon’s latest effort, Crack The Skye, is an intensely personal work and an emotional journey. Guitarist Bill Kelliher says, “This is the record we’ve always wanted to make.” And bass player Troy Sanders chimes in, “It’s not just seven songs, but an up-and-down journey. It was to truly dig in and pull personal inspiration from both the darkest and dearest parts of our souls, and simultaneously with our wonder and amazement of the entire universe.”
Check out Mastodon’s Artist of the Month Page here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/artist/rock/mastodon.htm
The band consists of Kelliher, Sanders, drummer Brann Dailor, and guitarist Brent Hinds. The band worked with producer Brendan O’Brien to get a more old-school rock feel to the album. Kelliher calls the band’s sound, “Progressive on top of progressive, on the roots of Mastodon, still those heavy things and have your fans grow with you. There’s no formula. We can play any style we want for as long as we all feel it. And on this record there’s a lot more singing and harmonizing, less screaming. We’re honing our skills in our music. We just made a better record than the last record and that’s what we want to do the rest of our lives.”

Google announced on Monday that it would block users in England from watching music videos on YouTube.
As you might guess, money is what matters in this decision. Specifically, how large a royalty-pie slice YouTube should pay composers and publishers.
Google, which owns YouTube, has been negotiating with PRS for Music, Britain’s music royalty-collecting organization. Google wants to pay smaller royalty fees for showing music vids to Englanders, while the PRS wants the Internet giant to pay more.
Google says the PRS-proposed new rates would result in Google losing money every time someone in Britain watches a music video on YouTube.
“Our previous license from PRS for Music has expired, and we’ve been unable so far to come to an agreement to renew it on terms that are economically sustainable for us,” Google said in a statement, adding, “we will be blocking premium music videos in the UK that have been supplied or claimed by record labels.”
The PRS issued its own statement, saying the YouTube embargo caught it by surprise, and that the dispute and the resulting blockade all boiled down to Google greed.
“Google has told us they are taking this step because they wish to pay significantly less than at present to the writers of the music on which their service relies, despite the massive increase in YouTube viewing.”
The Music Publishers Association, the trade association for music publishers in the U.K., issued its own statement. But aside from siding with the PRS in the royalty dispute, the MPA also dissed Google for shutting off the music.
“It is difficult to see how anyone’s interests are served by denying to the YouTube community the content they most enjoy,” read a statement on the MPA’s Web site.
In other words, forget about the money, this is all about YouTube’s British users. Big bad Google has blocked England’s citizens from watching music videos thereby preventing Brits from enjoying more rewarding lives.
Neither side has stated how much the PRS wants or what Google is willing to pay.
This is one of those dustups where both sides will plead their respective cases in the court of public opinion while negotiators try to put a deal on the table. Google is playing hardball by blocking music videos from British viewing.
Meanwhile, the PRS is portraying Google as something less than honorable because the Internet company doesn’t want to pay what the PRS thinks is fair. In other words, the PRS is calling Google cheap.
Which is probably a compliment to Google. Cheap is something the company understands.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp has been making it possible for music fans to jam with their favorite rock stars since 1997. But the next session — running April 29th through May 3rd in Hollywood, CA — is bound to blow the roof off the Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp as it welcomes for the first time ever the legendary Steven Tyler as its headliner.
Tyler, lead singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist for the Grammy-winning, Boston-based rock band Aerosmith, which has sold 100 million albums in a career spanning four decades, will bring his own inimitable style to the proceedings, fielding questions and sharing insights and stories from his incredible career.
“Steven has generously agreed to donate exclusive autographed memorabilia for our traditional closing night concert and charity auction to benefit MusiCares, which will take place at the world famous Whiskey A Go Go,” said David Fishof, Producer, Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp.
The five-day rock camp, which runs April 29th through May 3rd in Hollywood, CA, gives music lovers — regardless of their musical ability — a once-a-lifetime opportunity to live like a rock star and jam with their idols. Participants form separate bands, each of which receives intensive coaching from a different rock star providing an unforgettable, life-changing experience.
This rock camp’s all-star roster of musicians also includes Grammy award-winning producer Mark Hudson, Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver), Todd Rundgren, Steve Lukather (Toto), Bruce Kulick (KISS), Alan White (Yes), Elliot Easton (The Cars) and many more. Several celebrity campers have signed on for the April session, including ice skater/Olympic Gold medalist Scott Hamilton and Guy Fieri, the “bad boy” of Food Network.
Previous camp guest stars have included Slash (Guns N’ Roses), Roger Daltrey (The Who), Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys) and Bill Wyman (The Rolling Stones). The Stones’ Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were featured in a special Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp episode of “The Simpsons.”

Great White seems to live by the old addage “If It Ain’t Broke Don’t Fix It” and after 27 years, 12 original studio albums, and countless live and compilation albums it has worked, but sometimes even if it doesn’t need fixed a little tweaking can do wonders. On their newest release “Rising” the guys could have definitely used a little tweaking. Now don’t get me wrong “Rising” rocks it just doesn’t rock hard enough at least on a consistent basis.”Rising” starts out promising enough as the first three tracks “Situation”, “All Or Nothin’”, and “I Don’t Mind” are absolutely vintage Great White. Jack Russell’s voice is still one of the best in the business and doesn’t sound like it has lost in power over the years as some singers are prone to do. Newcomer, bassist, Scott Snyder makes his presence known right from the start with a great foot tapping bass line on “Situation” and follows it up with another great performance on “All Or Nothin’”. The rest of the band, guitarist, Mark Kendall, who is still one of the most underrated players in the music business, guitarist/keyboard Michael Lardie, and drummer Audie Desbrow are all outstanding and give solid performances from start to finish.
The problem I have with “Rising” are the songs themselves. They seem to be stuck in the mid-tempo range and rarely break out into full fledged rockers I have come to expect from Great White, with “Danger Zone” being the one exception, and to be completely honest they just aren’t very memorable. Of the 12 tracks on this album there are 4 songs I would consider standout tracks as I said before “Situation”, “All Or Nothin’”, and “I Don’t Mind” are all vintage Great White and you can add the ballad “Only You Can Do” to that list also. “Loveless” is almost there but it is missing that little something extra to make it special. It would not surprise me at all if a country artist ended up covering “Is It Enough” or “the Last Chance”, even the versions on “Rising” could get airplay on today’s country stations. The rest of the songs are just there more like background music than anything you would crank the stereo up too.
I’m sure for the fans just discovering Great White “Rising” will fill their cup, but for lifelong fans, like myself, “Rising” will definitely leave you feeling a little deflated. “Rising” is a prime example of the pieces being better than the whole.

Land of Tales is a brand new band masterminded by two guys, Kristian (vocals and guitar) and Palle (keyboards). They have been playing together for fifteen years in a band called Naiskala. However all the time, there has been a constant urge to make more adult oriented rock music, sung in English.
Kristian started writing songs in November 2006, meanwhile Petri Lahtinen and Mika Mäkiranta wrote the lyrics for the tales. They uploaded them on their Myspace page getting a fabulous response from all over the world. International fan clubs have been already founded in Germany and overseas. Land of Tales therefore started shopping their music around, until they caught the interest of Frontiers Records
The Land of Tales sound is an equal union of keyboards and guitar, crafted with catchy melodies and BIG choruses! The result is a somewhat original and peculiar approach to songwriting and music that makes them stand apart from many other bands of the Melodic Rock genre.
In the summer 2007 long time musical friends Sami Rajala on bass and Sami Ojala on drums joined the band during the recording sessions.
Land of Tales are now geared up to take the Melodic Rock world by storm. Get ready for their exciting slice of class, melodies and Rock!
