In 2008, when I first heard Coldspell’s demo CD, I was extremely excited. Easily the best demo disc that had ever crossed my desk, I knew big things were in store for this band. A short period later, they were signed by Escape Music. This band might be from the ultra chilly town of Kiruna, Sweden, but there is nothing cold about Coldspell.
The songs I heard last year were great, and a few of the songs on Coldspell’s debut “Infinite Stargaze” are from that demo, and rightfully so, as the songs kick ass.
Coldspell has to be one of the tightest melodic rock acts that I have heard in quite some time. Singer Niclas Swedentorp has a very powerful clean singing voice that is a true pleasure to hear. As strong as his voice is, the band backing him up is pretty awesome as well.
Former R.A.W. axe man Michael Larsson is an outstanding guitarist. His playing helps give Coldspell’s music a 70’s classic rock feel, with some modern sounding guitar tones. When Larsson cuts loose, I can not help my urge to crank the tunes up. I enjoyed his playing so much, on “Infinite Stargaze” that I immediately secured a copy of his former band’s CD (R.A.W – First).
The keyboards of Matti Eklund augments, but does not overpower Coldspell’s music. His playing gives Coldspell’s music a Deep Purple/Whitesnake like feel. Quite a few songs on “Infinite Stargaze” are incredibly catchy, and get in your head quickly. When I try to decide on a favorite I struggle, because there are several good songs on this disc.
The bottom line: “Infinite Stargaze” has some of the best melodic hard rock that I have heard in a long time. There is no doubt in my mind that this disc will be in my top ten of 2009. With an album this good, Coldspell will, without question be heading to warmer climates in the near future! Check them out on myspace at this link.
Fans of bands like Whitesnake, Gotthard, Tyketto or Blue Murder should not hesitate to buy this CD. You can grab a copy of “Infinite Stargaze” from NEH Records at this link.

After three well-received albums, and a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance for the song “Colony of Birchmen” off Blood Mountain, Mastodon’s latest effort, Crack The Skye, is an intensely personal work and an emotional journey. Guitarist Bill Kelliher says, “This is the record we’ve always wanted to make.” And bass player Troy Sanders chimes in, “It’s not just seven songs, but an up-and-down journey. It was to truly dig in and pull personal inspiration from both the darkest and dearest parts of our souls, and simultaneously with our wonder and amazement of the entire universe.”
Check out Mastodon’s Artist of the Month Page here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/artist/rock/mastodon.htm
The band consists of Kelliher, Sanders, drummer Brann Dailor, and guitarist Brent Hinds. The band worked with producer Brendan O’Brien to get a more old-school rock feel to the album. Kelliher calls the band’s sound, “Progressive on top of progressive, on the roots of Mastodon, still those heavy things and have your fans grow with you. There’s no formula. We can play any style we want for as long as we all feel it. And on this record there’s a lot more singing and harmonizing, less screaming. We’re honing our skills in our music. We just made a better record than the last record and that’s what we want to do the rest of our lives.”

Google announced on Monday that it would block users in England from watching music videos on YouTube.
As you might guess, money is what matters in this decision. Specifically, how large a royalty-pie slice YouTube should pay composers and publishers.
Google, which owns YouTube, has been negotiating with PRS for Music, Britain’s music royalty-collecting organization. Google wants to pay smaller royalty fees for showing music vids to Englanders, while the PRS wants the Internet giant to pay more.
Google says the PRS-proposed new rates would result in Google losing money every time someone in Britain watches a music video on YouTube.
“Our previous license from PRS for Music has expired, and we’ve been unable so far to come to an agreement to renew it on terms that are economically sustainable for us,” Google said in a statement, adding, “we will be blocking premium music videos in the UK that have been supplied or claimed by record labels.”
The PRS issued its own statement, saying the YouTube embargo caught it by surprise, and that the dispute and the resulting blockade all boiled down to Google greed.
“Google has told us they are taking this step because they wish to pay significantly less than at present to the writers of the music on which their service relies, despite the massive increase in YouTube viewing.”
The Music Publishers Association, the trade association for music publishers in the U.K., issued its own statement. But aside from siding with the PRS in the royalty dispute, the MPA also dissed Google for shutting off the music.
“It is difficult to see how anyone’s interests are served by denying to the YouTube community the content they most enjoy,” read a statement on the MPA’s Web site.
In other words, forget about the money, this is all about YouTube’s British users. Big bad Google has blocked England’s citizens from watching music videos thereby preventing Brits from enjoying more rewarding lives.
Neither side has stated how much the PRS wants or what Google is willing to pay.
This is one of those dustups where both sides will plead their respective cases in the court of public opinion while negotiators try to put a deal on the table. Google is playing hardball by blocking music videos from British viewing.
Meanwhile, the PRS is portraying Google as something less than honorable because the Internet company doesn’t want to pay what the PRS thinks is fair. In other words, the PRS is calling Google cheap.
Which is probably a compliment to Google. Cheap is something the company understands.

But the next session — running April 29th through May 3rd in Hollywood, CA — is bound to blow the roof off the Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp as it welcomes for the first time ever the legendary Steven Tyler as its headliner.
Tyler, lead singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist for the Grammy-winning, Boston-based rock band Aerosmith, which has sold 100 million albums in a career spanning four decades, will bring his own inimitable style to the proceedings, fielding questions and sharing insights and stories from his incredible career.

The five-day rock camp, which runs April 29th through May 3rd in Hollywood, CA, gives music lovers — regardless of their musical ability — a once-a-lifetime opportunity to live like a rock star and jam with their idols. Participants form separate bands, each of which receives intensive coaching from a different rock star providing an unforgettable, life-changing experience.
This rock camp’s all-star roster of musicians also includes Grammy award-winning producer Mark Hudson, Duff McKagan (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver), Todd Rundgren, Steve Lukather (Toto), Bruce Kulick (KISS), Alan White (Yes), Elliot Easton (The Cars) and many more. Several celebrity campers have signed on for the April session, including ice skater/Olympic Gold medalist Scott Hamilton and Guy Fieri, the “bad boy” of Food Network.
Previous camp guest stars have included Slash (Guns N’ Roses), Roger Daltrey (The Who), Brian Wilson (The Beach Boys) and Bill Wyman (The Rolling Stones). The Stones’ Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were featured in a special Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp episode of “The Simpsons.”

Great White seems to live by the old addage “If It Ain’t Broke Don’t Fix It” and after 27 years, 12 original studio albums, and countless live and compilation albums it has worked, but sometimes even if it doesn’t need fixed a little tweaking can do wonders. On their newest release “Rising” the guys could have definitely used a little tweaking. Now don’t get me wrong “Rising” rocks it just doesn’t rock hard enough at least on a consistent basis.”Rising” starts out promising enough as the first three tracks “Situation”, “All Or Nothin'”, and “I Don’t Mind” are absolutely vintage Great White. Jack Russell’s voice is still one of the best in the business and doesn’t sound like it has lost in power over the years as some singers are prone to do. Newcomer, bassist, Scott Snyder makes his presence known right from the start with a great foot tapping bass line on “Situation” and follows it up with another great performance on “All Or Nothin'”. The rest of the band, guitarist, Mark Kendall, who is still one of the most underrated players in the music business, guitarist/keyboard Michael Lardie, and drummer Audie Desbrow are all outstanding and give solid performances from start to finish.
The problem I have with “Rising” are the songs themselves. They seem to be stuck in the mid-tempo range and rarely break out into full fledged rockers I have come to expect from Great White, with “Danger Zone” being the one exception, and to be completely honest they just aren’t very memorable. Of the 12 tracks on this album there are 4 songs I would consider standout tracks as I said before “Situation”, “All Or Nothin'”, and “I Don’t Mind” are all vintage Great White and you can add the ballad “Only You Can Do” to that list also. “Loveless” is almost there but it is missing that little something extra to make it special. It would not surprise me at all if a country artist ended up covering “Is It Enough” or “the Last Chance”, even the versions on “Rising” could get airplay on today’s country stations. The rest of the songs are just there more like background music than anything you would crank the stereo up too.
I’m sure for the fans just discovering Great White “Rising” will fill their cup, but for lifelong fans, like myself, “Rising” will definitely leave you feeling a little deflated. “Rising” is a prime example of the pieces being better than the whole.

Land of Tales is a brand new band masterminded by two guys, Kristian (vocals and guitar) and Palle (keyboards). They have been playing together for fifteen years in a band called Naiskala. However all the time, there has been a constant urge to make more adult oriented rock music, sung in English.
Kristian started writing songs in November 2006, meanwhile Petri Lahtinen and Mika Mäkiranta wrote the lyrics for the tales. They uploaded them on their Myspace page getting a fabulous response from all over the world. International fan clubs have been already founded in Germany and overseas. Land of Tales therefore started shopping their music around, until they caught the interest of Frontiers Records
The Land of Tales sound is an equal union of keyboards and guitar, crafted with catchy melodies and BIG choruses! The result is a somewhat original and peculiar approach to songwriting and music that makes them stand apart from many other bands of the Melodic Rock genre.
In the summer 2007 long time musical friends Sami Rajala on bass and Sami Ojala on drums joined the band during the recording sessions.
Land of Tales are now geared up to take the Melodic Rock world by storm. Get ready for their exciting slice of class, melodies and Rock!
Dates for Canada have now been confirmed and announced! Support on all shows will be from Trivium and 3 Inches of Blood! More info on presales and general tickets to come soon.

Chef/Author Mario Batali and Susan Cahn Co-Chair
Food Bank For New York City — which provides 300,000 free meals a day to New Yorkers in need — announced today it will honor iconic musician and philanthropist, Jon Bon Jovi, for his philanthropic efforts at the organizations Sixth Annual Can-Do Awards Dinner on Tuesday, April 21, at Abigail Kirsch’s Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers on the Hudson River. Co-chairing the dinner is Chef/Author Mario Batali and his wife Susan Cahn. The evening will include cocktails followed by dinner, awards, a live auction and yet-to-be announced musical performances. Previous Can-Do honorees include the Edge of U2, Gwyneth Paltrow, Michael Stipe, Helena Christensen, Mario Batali and Stanley Tucci.
Self-reliance, optimism and community are key concepts Jon Bon Jovi refers to, not just in his music, but also when articulating his desire to aid Americans without affordable housing, job training, counseling and other such services. These concepts are a common thread among all the charities, corporations, and private donors that he has united in unique partnerships over the past several years. Jon Bon Jovi’s on-going support for local, national and international organizations has resulted in millions of dollars raised while bringing heightened awareness to the issues that adversely impact humanity.
Some of Jon Bon Jovi’s notable charitable works include the Habitat for Humanity; Kenneth Cole’s RSVP to Help campaign, as well as the launch of a limited edition outerwear collection with Kenneth Cole New York with proceeds benefiting HELP USA; Project HOME in Philadelphia, and of course his own Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation. Founded in 2006, the Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing about positive change and helping the lives of those in need “one Soul at a time.” The Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation exists to combat issues that force families and individuals into economic despair with programs and partnerships targeted at breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness. Through 2008, Jon Bon Jovi and the Soul Foundation have provided funding to provide 140 units of affordable housing for low-income individuals and families.
As a result of his efforts, Jon Bon Jovi and his foundation were recently honored at the 2008 Billboard Touring Awards with the Humanitarian Award, which recognizes the philanthropic efforts of a touring professional, and named 2008 Sponsor of the Year by Habitat For Humanity Detroit, in recognition of his many outstanding contributions to HFH Detroit and its mission of providing a simple, decent place to live. Additionally, he recently performed “A Change Is Gonna Come” duet with Bettye LaVette on the Lincoln Memorial steps at the “We Are One” Obama Inauguration Concert in Washington, DC, and was the featured performer at the Commander in Chief Inaugural Ball.
The Can-Do Awards Dinner is instrumental in helping to provide support for the 1.3 million New Yorkers who rely on soup kitchens and food pantries to survive. Every dollar donated to the Food Bank provides five meals. This is a pivotal year for the Can-Do Gala as the recession deepens and unemployment continues to rise. Already the level of need has reached crisis proportions. The number of New York City residents having difficulty affording needed food has spiked to nearly 4 million — doubling from approximately 2 million in 2003 — representing almost half of all New York City residents.
“Jon Bon Jovi has demonstrated an uncommon commitment to ending hunger. We applaud his passion, his compassion and his generosity of spirit,” said Dr. Lucy Cabrera, President and CEO of the Food Bank For New York City. “These are dark days. Never in the history of the Food Bank have we seen so many New Yorkers struggling to put food on the table, a trend we anticipate will worsen in the coming year. We could not do what we do without the support of people like Jon who continuously say, I ‘Can Do.’ His presence here tonight will certainly insure that many more New Yorkers will truly ‘Have A Nice Day’.”
Food Bank For New York City recognizes 26 years as the city’s major provider of food to New Yorkers in need. The organization works to end food poverty and increase access to affordable, nutritious food for low-income New Yorkers through a range of programs and services that focus on food sourcing and distribution, education and nutrition, financial empowerment, disaster relief, policy and research.
Food Bank For New York City sources and distributes food to more than 1,000 food assistance programs, assisting the approximately 1.3 million New Yorkers who access emergency food. The Food Bank provides food safety, networking and capacity-building workshops; manages nutrition education programs for schools, after-school and emergency food programs; operates food stamp outreach and education programs; operates senior programs, a soup kitchen and food pantry; coordinates the largest civilian Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) program in the country; and develops policy and conducts research to inform community and government efforts to end food poverty throughout New York City. For every dollar donated to the Food Bank, 96 cents goes toward food acquisition, distribution and programs. For additional information, visit www.foodbanknyc.org
Tickets start at $500 and can be purchased by calling 212.249.6188 or by emailing email@example.com.

After releasing 3 successful EP’s for three years straight, Cirkus finished their full on frontal assault debut album titled “Let the Madness Begin” together with musical genius Chris Tsangarides, a Grammy nominated producer and mixing engineer for bands such as Judas Priest, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Bruce Dickinson and Yngwie Malmsteen. It’s called a shock to the system and senses so what better way to describe a Cirkus attack than Let the Madness Begin. The songs, the sound and the quality of the album speak for itself.
In addition to the worldwide release, CIRKUS has also launched a video of one of the songs featured on “Let The Madness Begin”, the video of the song “TRASHY” can be viewed at the E-Card, the band’s website and MySpace and at Hard Rock Hideout below.

It has been a while since I have attended a movie on its opening night, but last Friday night my wife and I caught Watchmen. This is one of the rare cases where I read the book (or graphic novel if you prefer) before seeing the movie. How well did Watchmen follow the book? It was damn close to perfect. What does this mean to the average movie goer? You are going to see one extremely graphic flick when you go to see Watchmen. Don’t expect the campy feel of Spider-man, or the high tech fun of Iron Man with Watchmen. This is an adult super hero movie.
Watchmen is extremely graphic with scenes of brutal violence, nearly soft porn, and situations that are not appropriate for children. DO NOT TAKE YOUR KIDS TO THIS MOVIE. The story is good, although somewhat dark and the special effects are pretty amazing. Watchmen has plenty of drama, moments of comedy, and a few bits of action. If the movie has any faults, it is the lack of action, but there is some there. The action that is there, is pretty good, I just wish there was more.
Those of you that read the book, will be amazed how closely the movie follows the Watchmen story. Some things were cut for time, but nothing important enough to change the story very much.
The movie is centered around six characters: Dr. Manhattan, Rorschach, Nite Owl, The Comedian, Ozymandias, and Silk Spectre. Watchmen has pretty much of a no-name cast, but it doesn’t matter because the nail the roles of these characters perfectly.
I enjoyed this movie. It wasn’t watered down, or dumbed down for the audience, and a lot of things I thought would be edited out, were not. Although their have been some other graphic novels to hit the big screen, this is the first one in the super hero setting depicted in this extremely dark fashion.
Watchmen will definitely appeal to some movie viewers, and may be too shocking for others.

Here are a couple of videos by Canadian bands Age of Electric and Big House:
“Aphrodisiac Smile” appeared on Age of Electric’s 1991 self-released “the Latest Plague”, which is extremely hard to find these days.
“Dollar In My Pocket (Pretty Things)” is the opening track from Big House’s 1991 self titled debut, unfortunately the band split up before album #2 could ever be recorded.
