Multi-million selling Canadians Nickelback have announced that Southern rockers Black Stone Cherry will support them on their upcoming UK arena shows in May. Get your Nickelback tickets!
Dates for Nickelback and Black Stone Cherry’s UK Tour:
Black Stone Cherry aren’t aliens to huge arena tours after securing an opening slot with rock legends Def Leppard and Whitesnake on their European double headline arena tour. They are released their second studio album ‘Folklore and Superstition’ in August 2008. Vocalist/guitarist Chris Robertson reflects on the process, saying,
“Starting out as a band seven years ago, with high hopes and even bigger dreams, I honestly believe this record shows the experience of our past travels, and gives a hint of the future. It captures all the energy and heart that embody Black Stone Cherry. We took some chances on this album and I believe that our fans will appreciate seeing the other sides of the band that they may or may not have known existed.”
Nickelback vocalist, Chad Kroeger has also commented on his take on Nickelback’s popularity, “I honestly think that with every song you release you have to keep winning your own fans over again,” he explains. “I want every single song to be amazing. That’s what I want to hear, so that’s what we have to try to provide to our fans.”

Hardline was formed when brothers Johnny (vocals) and JoeyGioeli, originally from the band Brunette, teamed up with guitarist Neal Schon (Journey). Signed by MCA as soon as Schon left Bad English, with the addition of Todd Jensen (David Lee Roth, Alice Cooper) on bass and Deen Castronovo (also coming from Bad English and later on with Journey) on drums, the band went on to record their debut “Double Eclipse” for MCA in 1992 and then went on the tour circuit with such heavy hitters as Van Halen and Mr. Big. (guitar)
While never popular in the mainstream, Hardline’s album became immediately very popular among the Hard Rock fraternity and is still today regarded as one of the finest efforts of the decade. However by that time grunge and alternative styles had already taken over and Melodic Rock was being pushed aside. Tension among band members, the record company and perhaps certain egos, got in the way of an immediate follow-up album, despite the band having written more than enough material.
Years later Johnny (who in the meanwhile gathered vast recognition signing for the German axe-hero Axel Rudi Pell) and his brother Joey decided to give it another go with Hardline after the call of Frontiers Records and with an all new line-up they produced the awesome return album “II” in 2002, with Josh Ramos (of The Storm and Two Fires fame) taking Neal Schon’s place on lead guitar.
Johnny and Josh Ramos started to work on new Hardline songs in 2006. With a renewed line-up now featuring Johnny Gioeli on vocals and Josh Ramos on all guitars, with Michael T. RossJamie Brown on bass and Atma Anur on drums, Hardline are now back from where they have left off producing a killer new album “Leaving The End Open”, chock full of killer guitar riffs, amazing hooklines and heartfelt ballad sealed with Gioeli’s incredible vocals and the band’s instrumental prowess. In Johnny Gioeli’s words “Leaving The End Open has a nice mix of flavors… take “Voices”: it’s power, it’s positive feeling, it puts me in a “I can do anything mood, or “Start Again” purely radio. Everyone on this record shines!” . on keyboards,
Final tracklisting of “Leaving The End Open” includes:
“Today’s worldwide economy has made it so difficult for artists to get out on the road and share the music with the fans” concludes Johnny. “Our fans do not go unnoticed… we will do everything possible to play shows and demonstrate the power this line up has”. The album will be released on May 19th in the USA via Frontiers/Super D and in Japan on King Records.

This three man band consisting of Guitarist/Vocalist Dylan, bassist Isiah, and Duke T on drums have a huge sound for a trio. A blend of the best in past and present styles, brought to life seething with pure energy. On their album “Doomsday Profits” all of those influences shine through on such songs as “the Man Who Knows All”, “Pride Before The Fall”, “Brewtality” and “Van Salem”.
Archer won “Best Local Band 2008” in the Metro Santa Cruz Goldies Awards, and played in the 2008 Sweden Rock Festival. The guys have played with everyone from Heart and Blue Oyster Cult to Heaven & Hell and Testament. Heart Of Steel Records has announced the signing of reformed ’80s Swedish metallers TORCH for the release of their new album, entitled “Dark Sinner”. Due on April 3, the CD is said to be “best-of” collection of sorts, featuring re-recorded versions of the band’s biggest and best songs as well as two never-before-released cuts.
“Dark Sinner” track listing:
02. Beyond The Threshold Of Pain
03. Fire Raiser
04. Watcher Of The Night
05. Battle Axe
06. Hatchet Man
08. Sweet Desire
10. Hot On Your Heels
11. Sinister Eyes
13. Beauty And The Beast
14. The Dark Sinner (previously unreleased track)
15. We Will Fight (previously unreleased track)
Following the release of “Dark Sinner”, TORCH will embark on an european tour, plus they will spread some classic Swedish steel at one of biggest heavy metal festivals in Europe, the mighty Sweden Rock Festival, which will be held June 3-6, 2009.
Heart Of Steel general manager Primo Bonali commented: “I grew up with the music of TORCH as well as countless heavy metal band in the ’80s. Still TORCH has always been one of my favourite European heavy metal bands. I remember buying the first TORCH album in a stinky and old record store specialized in used vinyls. It was a shock! I remember finding myself jumping in the living room at the sound of ‘Warlock’ and ‘Beyond The Threshold Of Pain’!!! Then came out ‘Electrikiss’, the second album, and it was worth all the expectations. So it was very disappointing to know back then that the band split up after that album. Now having TORCH on my label is one of these ‘dreams came true’ that only happens a very few times in a lifetime! It happened. So I have to say thanks, first of all, to the band who believed in us, and then to all of you guys over there who always support the real heavy metal scene.”
You can preview tracks from Torch by visiting their myspace page
Release dates for both the standard and deluxe version of the CD have been set for May 12th (US, Canada) . The official version contains 10 songs in a jewel case. The deluxe edition has 14 songs and is packaged in an elaborate digipack with a 16 page lyric and photo booklet. All four bonus tracks in the deluxe package are additional brand new songs. Why two editions? “Pricing, really” says Rob Thorne. “Old-school Oathbangers won’t have any qualms paying $14 for the deluxe, but newcomers to the band might, and we’re working on an exclusive with iTunes to feature the album at a discounted price. You just can’t do that with 14 songs.”

While scouring the internet looking for something to write about, I ran across a blog that sparked my interest: The Singers Who Didn’t Quite Work Out (www.classicrockmagazine.com/blog). Line up changes are a never ending constant in the world of rock & roll, but the loss of a lead singer is often detrimental and hard to come back from. The contributors of the blog had great suggestions and some that I didn’t even think of. Of course this got me thinking, so here is my list.
1. Gary Cherone and Van Halen – This was also the first one listed on ClassicRockMagazine.com’s list, and I mentioned it on a previous post for the moment Van Halen jumped the shark. It was just a weird combination that didn’t work well or fit naturally.
2. John Corabi and Motley Crue – I think everyone agrees that John Corabi did a fine job on the Motley Crue album but it still didn’t work. Why? The band sounded great, but it just wasn’t Motley Crue. One of the major distinctions in Motley Crue’s sound is Vince Neil’s voice. Without it, it’s not Motley Crue. The fans and record label realized that. I’m not saying that John Corabi sucked at all. If they would have slapped a different name on that album, it would have worked.
3. All Singers and Journey – I don’t care how much you sound like Steve Perry…you’re not Steve Perry.
4. Ripper Owens and Judas Priest – Please see explanation for #3. He’s not Rob Halford.
It’s not always all bad. There are a few bands that have actually stood the test of time with a new singer.
1. Brian Johnson and AC/DC – After the tragic death of Bon Scott, I’m sure it was difficult for anyone to think that AC/DC could go on without him. Thankfully, the band took the bold step and replaced him with Brian Johnson, and they lived happily ever after. This is probably the best success story of them all.
2. Johnny Van Zant & Lynyrd Skynyrd – Like AC/DC, it was death that brought a new lead singer to Skynyrd. A 1977 plane crash took the lives of six people, including Skynyrd’s singer, Ronnie Van Zant. About 10 years later, Ronnie’s brother, Johnny, stepped up to take over the the lead singer spot and Skynyrd’s been rocking ever since.
God knows I’ve missed some on each list, and there were others whom I didn’t know where to place (ex: Johnny Solinger and Skid Row). Replacing a singer is a ballsy move for any band. In the end, it’s usually the fans who decide if it’s a hit or a miss. So how do you feel? Who didn’t work and who did?
Right from the get-go The King Blues’ music has defied convention. Unafraid to mix up dub bass lines, doo-wop a cappella songs, ska rhythms, Lonnie Donegan-styled skiffle, British folk and gritty poetry, theirs is a stripped-down, hot-wired one where ukuleles, acoustic guitars and melodicas feature heavily. It is punk music as it was intended – engaging, forward-thinking, all-encompassing.
The early months of 2008 saw the Hackney collective holed up in the studio making album number two, Save The World, Get The Girl, with producers Clive Langer (Madness, Dexy’s, Elvis Costello) and Peter Miles. Two years on since they cut their debut album Under The Fog and The King Blues are a changing entity. If their debut was a slogan-strewn howl of discontent against all that’s wrong with the world – albeit one jam-packed with uplifting songs – then Save The World, Get The Girl is a much more personalized take on social ills.
Recognising that pulpit-bashing preaching rarely extends beyond the converts of the punk scene, frontman Jonny ‘Itch’ Fox has poured his heart and soul into this new set of songs. Digging deep to draw on life experiences, Save The World, Get The Girl documents the rites de passage of a young man in the modern age. It is a polemical record with a conscience, a philosophy, a sense of humour and a concept.
As Itch explains: “The album tells the story of a protester who falls in love on the frontline as it were, has his heart broken, gets into drugs, then comes out of it in the end realizing that ultimately he is nothing without love. The over-riding theme then is: ‘love conquers all’.”
Save The World, Get The Girl certainly reflects the evolution of a band who have gone from being threatened with ASBOs for guerrilla performances at Canary Wharf and Westminster to shows at Wembley Arena. These days they’re viewing the bigger picture – and searching for solutions. “Initially we just wanted to be a soundtrack for the movement but now we feel that we have explored our art and opened our hearts,” says Itch. “As a result, our political ideas carry a lot more weight now.”
With a nod to the Dead Kennedys, the album was preceded by lead single ‘Let’s Hang The Landlord’, released as a split single with Flobots on August 4th. If Under The Fog was The King Blues’ equivalent of ‘White Riot’ (raw, energized, unstoppable) then this track is their ‘Stay Free’ (soulful, introspective, autobiographical).
“It’s an autobiographical story about my youth,” says Itch. “Previously I was singing about wider issues, possibly to avoid making myself vulnerable to criticism. But this time I’ve stepped things up and gone personal. There are fewer slogans and more depth. The universal truths of our music however – things we have explored in the past, like life and love – remain.”
Second single ‘My Boulder’ has already been championed by Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, who recommended it highly to his studio guest, Noel Gallagher.
Armed with a ukulele, a guitar and a commitment to politics and resistance, The King Blues began life in 2004 when Itch and Jamie Jazz began performing at squat parties and punk shows in and around London. Guitarist Fruitbag joined soon after. Inspired by the reggae-reared punk bands such as The Clash, The Specials and Operation Ivy and the growing worldwide resistance movement, they played anywhere that would have them – pavements, car parks, political rallies and on The King Blues Sound System – a mobile PA carried on a giant tricycle that the band built, allowing them to play literally anywhere. Few bands can say they genuinely come from the streets, but The King Blues are one of them.
Expanded to a six-piece live, The King Blues’ guerilla tactics, support from Radio 1’s Mike Davies and heavy road work – including tours with kindred spirits such as Anti Flag, Bedouin Soundclash and Gogol Bordello, and one record-breaking day that saw seven shows in seven towns – lead to them releasing Under The Fog with leading UK punk label Household Name.
Numerous festival slots followed before the band were signed to Field Recordings by owner Rollo of Faithless after hearing the band on a music panel at In The City. Next came the release in 2007 of two killer singles: bass-heavy dub-punk rallying cry ‘Come Fi Di Youth’ and summer ska tune (complete with some fine vocal toasting), ‘Mr Music Man’.
Today friends and supporters range from Tariq Ali to Hard-Fi, who The King Blues supported at the aforementioned Wembley Arena show in 2007 (the first time they played there was in the car park).
Never has there been a better time for a band like The King Blues than now. Politically-sussed, constantly active but never dogmatic, they are the latest in a long tradition of well-read, well-intentioned British refuseniks representing the disenfranchised youth from the ground up. With war in Iraq still raging, a Conservative leader in charge of their home city and an economy in decline, the world needs bands like The King Blues more than ever.
In years to come, when they’re asked by their grandchildren what they contributed to the course of political and social history, The King Blues can say – with great pride – they got involved. They got people thinking and, perhaps just as importantly, they got people dancing and smiling.
The King Blues album”Save The World, Get The Girl” is out now.

On this new disc, Street Legal has gained the help of axeman Tore Ostby. Ostby may not be a household name amongst many of you, but for those of us who have been long time Jorn Lande fans, we know Tore as Jorn Lande’s band mate from the band Ark, as well as Jorn’s debut solo CD, “Starfire”. He is an extremely talented guitarist whose music I have been enjoying for several years now. Must like the past releases he has played on, Ostby’s guitar work shines and helps Street Legal craft one hell of a good CD.
There are several cool tunes on this disc that are worth checking out, with no real duds in the bunch. “Loading Up is as solid of an opening cut as I have heard all year. The title track “Bite the Bullet” is one really good rockin’ cut. The cover of the tune “Maniac” from the Flashdance soundtrack was completely unexpected. Street Legal isn’t the first band to cover this tune (Firewind did it first) but they absolutely nailed it. This is a pretty fun tune.
Street Legal’s music on this disc is just hard enough to keep a lot of hard rock fans happy, and melodic enough to appeal to the AOR crowd as well. I hear a lot of similarities to Thin Lizzy, with a few Whitesnakeisms thrown in for good measure. Singer Bjorn Boge isn’t a dead ringer for Phil Lynott vocally, but he does sound a lot like him.
“Bite the Bullet” is a solid release from a pretty good band. I hope to hear more from Street Legal in the future. You can check out Street Legal on myspace at this link. You can purchase “Bite the Bullet” from NEH Records here.

With one week until record release, CHRIS CORNELL is giving his fans the opportunity to hear the album as it was intended-in full. Cornell will be streaming his anticipated 3rd solo album, Scream, produced by Timbaland, on MySpace for 48 hours starting at 12pm EST today, March 3rd till 12pm EST Thursday, March 5th.
Scream is a seamless work. Timbaland makes inventive use of Cornell’s soaring melodies and incisive lyrics, setting his intense vocal performances against a lush, expressive soundscape and irresistible stutter-step beats. The inventive new work looks to spearhead a brave new world of cross-genre collaboration.
The 13-track album is due out on March 10th via Interscope/Mosley Music. Chris is currently on tour in Europe and will kick off his multi-city US tour on March 28th in Dallas, TX. Scream showcases a new, seductive sound – dark, multi-layered and full of puzzles and surprises. The songs bring a new cinematic scope to Cornell’s performances, with potent visual imagery echoing the non-stop musical assault from his internationally acclaimed live band. “Musically, this is the most ambitious thing I’ve been a part of. It’s almost like a movie soundtrack,” says Cornell, who while on tour will also be playing other music from throughout his two-decade, 14-album career.
Out of a seemingly unlikely collaboration, comes an instantly familiar sound which defies genre’s and pushes the envelope of sound.

There’s a WARRANT Out for LITA FORD and EVE 6 at ROCK GONE WILD 2009!
Having just wrapped 42 American shows opening for AC/DC, the band heads to Europe next on the ‘BLACK ICE’ World Tour’!
THE ANSWER, four lads hailing from Downpatrick in Northern Ireland have been busy fulfilling their duties as the opening act for the North American leg of AC/DC’s Black Ice World Tour. They recently finished the 42 show run on January 31st and will soon head to Europe to continue on the Black Ice juggernaut leading up to the release of their new album, Everyday Demons.
Everyday Demons is THE ANSWER’s second LP but the first to be released here in the states. The album is due out March 31st on THE END RECORDS, distributed through RED and was recorded in summer ’08 in Los Angeles with John Travis (Kid Rock, Static-X, Killing Heidi, etc.) producing.
Announcing THE ANSWER’s Black Ice tour spot in Fall ’08, Rolling Stone wrote in a weekly “Hot List,” “No effing wonder AC/DC tapped these U.K. long-hairs to open…the singer howls like Paul Rodgers, the guitarist shreds like Jimmy Page and the lyrics are as awesomely stupid as ballin’ without a rubber.” Just two months later, in 2008’s annual late December “Hot Issue,” the publication hailed the band as “Rock Gods In Training.” Also in December, after their network television debut on The Late Show, David Letterman proclaimed, “The Answer, single handedly keeping rock and roll alive.” And Billboard magazine has named them as one of this year’s “Best Bets.”
Everyday Demons will be released throughout the world this February and March and has already debuted at #8 on Japan’s international chart. The band also topped music retailer HMV’s list of acts to break in 2009. HMV has predicted the success of Franz Ferdinand, The Arctic Monkeys and Duffy in past years.

Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce you to the Charm City Devils, the first signing from Eleven Seven Music’s President, Nikki Sixx. “When I first heard Charm City Devils, my initial thought, along with everyone at Eleven Seven, was this is a real rock band! When I listen to their music I hear elements of credible bands like Aerosmith and I feel AC/DC. I like the fact that they’re from Baltimore and the way they relate the working mans experience. They’re not from New York or LA. You don’t hear many bands from Baltimore and these guys carry on tradition with their own relevant and modern sound with classic riffs,” said Sixx.
“This album comes from an emotional level. The lyrics are very honest; they’re pieces of my life, real things. Some are more sensitive and some deal with heavy issues, but they are balanced out by the fun, energetic songs that bring back some of that 1980s heyday of hard rock that audiences are longing for” says frontman John Allen. “I truly believe that raw emotion and honesty transcend all trends, and that if music has that classic kind of sound, it will have longevity,” he states. “That’s our goal: to transcend the times and not compromise the integrity of what we do.”
The band’s debut album Let’s Rock-N-Roll, is slated to hit stores on May 26, 2009. In support of the release from Eleven Seven Music, Charm City Devils will be touring regionally, as well as going on the road with Motley Crue, Buckcherry, and Papa Roach in 2009. Brazilian metal band, Almah has released a new video, “Beyond Tomorrow”. This song is from their 2008 album, “Fragile Equality”. You can purchase this CD, at this link.
If you caught Steve Grimmett’s last release, “Personal Crisis” (shame on you, if you didn’t) you already know how good that disc is. Quite frankly, I think Grimmstine’s debut release is even better. The opening instrumental cut “Memory” gives you the false sense that disc is going to be a tame one. Such is not the case, as the next fourteen tracks nearly pound your senses into oblivion. Ok, maybe that is overstating it a little bit, but damn this is a fun CD. The songs on this disc range from classic heavy metal to some solid melodic rock. I couldn’t find a bad song in the bunch.
Steve Grimmett’s voice seemingly has gotten better with age. He still has incredible range, but doesn’t over do it.
I wouldn’t consider Fargo, North Dakota a hot bed of metal talent, but Mr. Grimmett has found one amazing band in this Northern U.S. city. Steve Stine blows me away with six string superiority. Where in the hell has this guy been? His playing on this CD is fantastic.
The rhythm section of Hat on bass, and Dave Johnson on drums is quite good. It sounds as if Johnson and Hat have been playing together for quite a while. Johnson busts out the double bass drumming at break neck speed and Hat keeps up the pace with his heavy bass.
The music from Grimmstine isn’t just high speed metal. The band slows it down on a few numbers and produce some amazingly good numbers that will appeal to melodic rock fans.
Some of my favorite cuts on this disc are “911”, “Supernatural”, “To Catch A Killer” and the Whitesnake like “This Don’t Look Like Love To Me”.
Good tunes and solid production and over an hour of music add up to one excellent metal CD. This is a disc that will appeal to fans of metal acts like Judas Priest, Saxon and of course, Grim Reaper, as well as a few melodic rock fans.

Rock band Saving Abel will join Seether as openers for Nickelback on their North American tour beginning this week on February 25th in Nashville, TN Saving Abel’s largest outing to date will hit arenas in over 30 cities across the continent. Tickets are currently on sale through Live Nation (www.livenation.com).
“We’re thrilled to be opening for Nickelback. It’s crazy, a year ago we were playing small bars and clubs around Memphis and now we’re touring the country in a bus and will be playing with one of the biggest touring rock bands in arenas,” said Saving Abel frontman Jared Weeks.
Saving Abel have been on the road non-stop since the March, 2008 release of their self titled debut from Virgin records and have played with rock heavy weights such as Buckcherry, Avenged Sevenfold, Puddle of Mudd and Shinedown. The band has enjoyed impressive success with their chart-topping, multi-format smash debut single “Addicted,” which hit #1 at mainstream rock radio, spent 11 consecutive weeks at #2 on the active rock chart and reached #7 at alternative radio. At press time, the track is the most played song of 2008 at the active rock format. “Addicted” found a whole new life in July when it impacted Top 40 radio. The run away hit is now sitting in the top 10 at the format and is top 15 at Hot AC. While “Addicted” is topping the pop charts, Saving Abel’s second single “18 Days,” a huge rock ballad dedicated to the troops, is heating up at rock radio where it is already top 10 at active rock and top 20 at alternative radio. Videos for both tracks have witnessed major play across all video channels including MTV2, VH1, Fuse and Music Choice where “Addicted” is currently the #1 played video an their “Hit List” channel. Saving Abel continues to reach new heights on the sales charts as well. The album spent 3 consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart before debuting on the Billboard 200 in July. It has sold over 240,000 copies to date. ”Addicted” hit #20 on the digital singles chart and is approaching platinum success with over 800,000 singles sold thus far.
Saving Abel – named after the Biblical sibling of Cain – was formed by Jared Weeks and guitarist Jason Null in 2004 in their hometown of Corinth, Mississippi. Now based in Memphis, Tennessee, the band’s lineup includes guitarist Scott Bartlett, bassist Eric Taylor and drummer Blake Dixon. Combining influences of southern rock, hard rock and alternative music, the band was first heard on a 2005 EP, produced by Skidd Mills (12 Stones, Saliva, Submersed).

Lynam posted the following update tonight:
The Operation Rock Tour is off and kicking! So far the shows have been going great. We’ve met a lot of new friends on this tour including the other bands (Joan Red and Ashes Of Soma). Unfortunately 4 shows into the tour, the lead singer of Ashes Of Soma broke his ankle jumping off the stage (thanks to encouragement from David:). We received word that he is doing great and will be finishing out the tour. We’ll be in Michigan at the end of the week and are looking forward to seeing all of our friends from the surrounding areas.
We’re trying to decide on our next single. “Save My Soul” did amazing reaching #5 on the Active Rock Independent chart. We would love to hear from you what your favorite song on “Tragic City Symphony” is. Send us a message on Myspace with “Favorite Song” in the subject line.
