iconIf you were to ask the average hard rock fan about the band Icon, I am sure you would probably receive a blank stare by most folks. The die hard hard rock & metal fans know these guys, and know them well.

If you aren’t familiar with the band, they are a five piece act that started out with a look like early Motley Crue, and had a sound that was like a good blend of KEEL and Y&T.

If you like big bombastic guitar solos and screaming metal vocals, you will RRRsmall5definitely enjoy Icon’s debut. Dan Wexler’s noodley guitar solos on this disc are great, and Stephen Clifford’s vocals could give Ron Keel a run for his money.

There are a few songs on this disc that get a lot of repeat plays by me including, the rocking anthem “On Your Feet”, “Under My Gun”,  and”Rock and Roll Maniac”. Even the instrumental track “Iconoclast” is cool.   This disc isn’t terribly long.  It clocks in just a little over 37 minutes.  Although, it is short, is a pretty fun hard rock disc.

Fans of mid 80s’s metal like RATT, Dokken & Keel are sure to love this. The debut CD has been out of print for years, but copies of it show up on Ebay on occasion. It is definitely worth seeking out if you can find a copy. Happy hunting!

For more information on Icon, check out the band’s myspace page.

Correction: They could just call it the Dan Wexler Band and move on.

ICON is an outstanding band. However, as much as I enjoy this band, I have to say this is not the ICON I’ve grown up with. This band should change their name back to ‘Tom Cats.’ That is what they were called when Pat Dixon, David Henzerling and Dan Wexler were playing together. This is just a rendition of Tom Cats: 2 Icon members and David Henzerling (aka David Michael-Phillips). They called also just call it the Dan Wexler Band and move on, but leave the moniker ICON alone until you have at least 3 or 4 original members back in the band. I was excited that Pat rejoined, then disappointed when he left AGAIN. Make up your damn mind, you’re not getting any younger guys. I’m sure being a surveyor pays more than Icon.

ICON is flippin’ awesome. Their last CD “Right Between The Eyes” can be special ordered from an independent label called ‘Wounded Bird Records,’ Box 48, Guilderland, NY 12084. I ordered 2 of them from Indepdent Records out of Denver, CO. It showed up within one week. Killer tunes. ICON will also be playing in Pryor, OK at the ROCKLAHOMA festival on July 11, 2009. Not sure why they haven’t put this on their MySpace page. More info on this ICON concert, call 866.310.2288 or 918.824.2288. Info@FeverFest.com ROCK ON! -Dericon (Denver, CO)
