Black Robot – S/T (Release Year – 2009)

blackrobotWhat happens when three three former members of Buckcherry reunite? They have transformed into a new powerhouse rock band in the form of Black Robot!

Black Robot taps into the influences of classic hard rock acts like AC/DC and Aeromsith, while creating something new and refreshingly cool.

Black Robot is powered by the vocals of Detroit native Huck Johns. If you haven’t heard Johns sing before, you are in for a treat. Producer Dave Cobb pushes Johns to new heights.  He sounds great on this CD.

Johns vocals are not the only high point here.  The rest of band featuring Yogi Lonich on guitars, Jonathan Brightman on bass and Devon Glenn on drums play their asses off on this CD.  I am pleasantly surprised on how different this material is from their past music.

If you aren’t hooked with big stadium anthem “Baddass”, the cover of J.J. Cale’s “Cocaine” will surely pull you in.  Black Robot could have easily tried to mimic the Eric Clapton version of this song, but instead opted for something completely different.  It is almost as if the band was possessed by the spirit of Bon Scott when they recorded this song.  This is a very cool cover tune.

“Momma Don’t Cry” has an awesome Jimi Hendrix like vibe to it.  Check out the jangly riffs on this tune, and you will see what I mean.

“I’m In Love” slows down the pace with an a very cool ballad.  This song could be a big hit for the band if it catches on.

“Money” is an infectious upbeat tune that is quickly becoming one of my favorites.  The lyrics are simple, but the music is quite fun.  Who doesn’t like money?

“In My Car” has a good, classic 70’s rock vibe to it.  This song reminds me of “Toys in the Attic” era Aerosmith.  I like this tune a lot.

“Love On A .45″ sees Johns channeling his inner Zeppelin on this catchy tune. Great Tune!

Black Robot has proved once again that ROCK IS NOT DEAD.   The band has cranked out one great debut. This CD is one of my new favorites this year!  Check them out at this link!!

  1. If you flash back to the 80’s, think about it, NONE of the leadsingers could sing and they made money money money. It has never been about whether or not the band could sing. Image is everything. John is a decent singer. LA LA Girl is annoying as hell but BADDASS and COCAINE are good efforts. Lets wait and see what their stage prescense is like before any final judgements are made.

  2. Additional musicians dude…Last I checked Yogi was makin noises for Chris Cornell’s new hip hop record, To me that guy in Blackrobot is one HELL of a SINGER! off key? naaaww…Coooool man. Real.
Dig deep and feel for once, put away your Tool records and enjoy some REAL Rock and Roll. America needs honest shit. YOU must be from Hollywood. Your all haters out there with someone else’s soul. go eat your veggies, We’ll all enjoy the meat and potatoes.

    • honest? they dont know the meaning of the word

      • isn’t this band from the hollywood “wanna be” set also? this record sounds rushed and forced. no soul. no passion. i bet with the right combination of time and a new singer (sorry, he’s good, just not the right fit) these guys could reclaim their BC fame. Baddass is a decent song but i could see myself getting tired of it real quick. I agree this singer has a wide vocal range but almost too much. None of these songs stand out enough to say hey isn’t that black robot?

  3. Thats funny cuz all I hear are guitars on this record, I think your wrong Scott. Yogi’s balls are caling…you better go.

  4. I’d buy this just for Yogi but you can’t even hear him over the off key vocals. I agree Vic. PASS Maybe their next one will be better. Get a songwriter and a singer guys and you just might have something.

  5. Well at least the artwork is cool. The rest is mundane. Cocaine is a cool cover, but I think I’ll pass.

  6. It sounds pretty good, I’m just disappointed a little because there is such a HUGE HUGE talent playing on the record however that is put to the backburner because its a fully vocal album just like everything else out there. Sounds more like a solo project rather than a group project. John is a good singer but isn’t quite the fit for the guys playing on the record. The vocals overpower everything else. Music and harmony is the root of all that is good. A singer is just a singer. Don’t disagree with the review, just got a little disappointed when all I heard was words.

    • Yeah I’d agree that the record is vocal driven, but Johns has a wide range of vocal ability, unlike alot who seem to sound the same on every track. The record sounds cool to me, I think its organic and retro.
It’s Rock and Roll! It aint supposed to be perfect!

  7. Huck Rules!

  8. RAAAWK!!!
    Look out world.
    The Robots WILL destroy

  9. Let these guys have the 15 minutes of fame everyone deserves.
All you haters just ruin things for those of us who are true fans and have been waiting for the release. Who cares if you got a copy months ago. Most of us didn’t and I for one just bought my copy.

  10. Legit or not who cares.
    The music is good.
Does it matter how many freakin hits or plays they have?
If you like it, buy it. If you don’t move on.
