First Show to Feature Rock Icons Stone Temple Pilots at Los Angeles House of Blues
The newly created St. Jude Rock ‘n Roll Hope Show will kick off July 1 at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, California with rock icons Stone Temple Pilots headlining the first show. Tickets are set to go on sale to the public on Saturday, June 6 and will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, one of the world’s premier pediatric cancer research centers.
The St. Jude Rock ‘n Roll Hope Show is a charity concert event created by the grandson of St. Jude founder and TV icon Danny Thomas (“Make Room For Daddy,” “The Danny Thomas Show”), musician Jason Thomas Gordon, and digital entrepreneur/music manager Tom Carolan of Total Live Music. Together, Gordon and Carolan partnered with Live Nation to bring these remarkable concerts to the House of Blues venues across the country and beyond. The goal of these very special musical events is to raise money and awareness for the children of St. Jude.
The inaugural concert for The St. Jude Rock ‘n Roll Hope Show promises nothing short of excellence with the reunited Stone Temple Pilots performing for the hope and health of the children of St. Jude. Since the moment they appeared on the scene in the early ’90s, Stone Temple Pilots dominated the decade from start to finish, racking up 15 singles on the Billboard Top Ten, winning a “Best Hard Rock Performance” GRAMMY in 1994 for “Plush,” and having their five albums sell more than 35 million copies worldwide.
STP singer Scott Wieland had this to say about playing the event: “We are humbled, honored and filled with grace by being given this very special opportunity. To be asked to play the first of what we all hope will be many of these events for children in dire medical needs at the St. Jude Rock n Roll show. Reading the Press Release I am almost embarrassed as it lists accolades of a life of music. The good life. What the rest speaks of is the horrible but true realities that those diseases bring to children and these families.
“Hope has been found in breast cancer. My mother is a testament to that, but leukemia and other diseases seem to offer less ‘statistically.’ Let this be a night of hope and a night of faith and maybe even a little providence. Couldn’t we all use a little? God knows they should have it all from us on this special night, or any night. Once again, thank you.”
The July 1 concert will open with Jason Thomas Gordon’s band, Kingsize. The L.A.-based rock band recently released a duo of EP’s — “The Good Fight,” with their first single “Miss America,” and its sister EP “The Bad Night,” that counter-punched with “Rabbits.” During the past year, Kingsize has become one of L.A.’s most exciting new live acts with one of the band’s songs being chosen as the opening theme for CBS TV’s best new comedy “Gary Unmarried.”
“St. Jude is a part of my blood in the same way that music has always been. To bring them together is a great feeling,” said Gordon. “You always hear people say how music saved their life. A band or a song changed them, healed them in some way. Well, this is that expression being manifest in a very physical way. This is rock ‘n roll truly saving lives.”
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. St. Jude is the first and only pediatric cancer center to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. Founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family’s inability to pay. St. Jude is financially supported by ALSAC, its fundraising organization. For more information, please visit www.stjude.org.
Celebrated rock pioneers RATT and EXTREME have teamed up to bring you this summer’s most rockin’ tour lineup.
The tour, which will feature sets from both bands with Ratt closing, kicks off on July 12th in Amarillo, TX and runs through August 7th in Hampton Beach, NH. It will cross the US and cover 16 markets, with more to be announced soon.
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of their landmark debut Out Of The Cellar, Ratt will be playing the album in its entirety.
Both bands are excited about the double bill. “Warren DeMartini and Nuno Bettencourt on same stage, same night?? ‘Nuff said, we’ll see you there!” says Ratt’s Bobby Blotzer.
Extreme’s Nuno Bettencourt concurs, “One hot summer night. Two bands fully loaded with musicianship. Mix in one part memorable songwriting. Add nine ounces of passionate performers. Throw in three well respected guitarists. Add a touch of West Coast raunch and a hint of East Coast funk. And you get yourself a recipe for one night of unforgettable rock and roll.”
Ratt is currently in the studio recording its first new record in over 10 years with famed producer Elvis Baskette (credits). The band announced its new partnership with Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records earlier this year. The album is planned for release this fall.
Extreme recently released their first new album in thirteen years Saudades de Rock (pronounced “sow-dodge”) which is a groundbreaking record that reaffirms the beloved, Boston-bred foursome’s stature as innovators in the world of rock & roll.
Over the past two years, Ratt has toured the world in support of their releases Tell The World – The Very Best Of Ratt and their first ever DVD, Videos from the Cellar- The Atlantic Years. During this time, the current lineup of Stephen Pearcy, Warren DeMartini, Bobby Blotzer, Robbie Crane and Carlos Cavazo played shows in Australia, Colombia and Peru for the first time in their careers. Their mega-hit ‘Round and Round’ was prominently featured in the Oscar nominated 2008 film The Wrestler, and the band will be headlining Rocklahoma this July.
One of the most popular rock acts of the past 20 years, Ratt’s brand of guitar-driven melodic rock helped shape the LA metal scene. The band boasts a deep catalog of hits including smashes like ‘Round and Round’, ‘Lay It Down’, ‘You’re In Love’, ‘Lack of Communication’ and ‘Wanted Man’, which are beloved by fans the world over. The band has gone on to sell millions of albums worldwide. With 1984’s mega-platinum debut Out Of The Cellar celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the band is looking forward to starting a new chapter with new music to complement the impressive legacy they have established over two-plus decades.
To date, the Grammy-nominated Extreme have released five albums, plus a greatest hits set – selling over 10 million records worldwide. They also achieved a #1 hit single, ‘More Than Words’ – from their 1990 multi-platinum album Extreme II: Pornograffitti – on the Billboard Hot 100, which they followed with the Top Five ‘Hole Hearted’. Although these two acoustic hits brought the band great mainstream success, the band’s trademark sound has always been more a mix of hard rock funk – fueled by guitar virtuoso Nuno Bettencourt’s signature style, Gary Cherone’s resonant vocals and socially conscious lyrics, Pat Badger’s rock solid bass, and the hard hitting Kevin Figueiredo on drums. Extreme has recently been introduced to an entire new generation of fans with the inclusion of their song ‘Play With Me’ in the popular video game Guitar Hero as well as ‘More Than Words’ featured in hit movies Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Love Guru.

CHICKENFOOT will perform on the June 5 edition of NBC-TV’s “The Tonight Show”, helping to kick off the program’s first week with new host Conan O’Brien. The appearance comes just days before the June 9 release of CHICKENFOOT’s self-titled debut album.
Although many “supergroups” tend to make one or two albums before its members go their separate ways or back to other projects, Satriani told The Pulse of Radio that he thinks CHICKENFOOT will be around for a while. “Well, I hope so, and I have a very good feeling that everybody is feeling the same way, that it’s a once-in-a-lifetime connection that you get, and that nobody wants to see it evaporate,” he said. “The good thing about being where we are in our careers is that we can pretty much decide what we want to do, and when to do it. But on the same token, nobody wants to disrupt anybody else’s trajectory with their other bands or their solo careers.”
The first single from CHICKENFOOT’s album is called “Oh Yeah”.
The vinyl version of the record will feature a bonus cut called “Bitten By The Wolf”.
In an interview with Gibson Guitars, guitar god Zakk Wylde called Aerosmith “as phony as Britney Spears” because they used outside songwriters. That’s a pretty big slap in the face to a pretty big, legendary rock band, but does Zakk have a point? He references bands like Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix who didn’t need outside writers, so why does Aerosmith need songwriters? Zakk even brings up a disappointing moment when “professional” song writers were brought in for Ozzy.
I see Zakk’s point. True musicians should be able to write their own music, especially if they’re at the level of Aerosmith. With all those years of experience, why would they need help writing music? Some music elitists would argue that bands who use outside writers aren’t nearly as talented, worthwhile or legitimate. Think about it for a minute…would you consider Britney Spears a REAL artist? Sure, she looks smokin’ hot, she can dance, and she’s got an incredible career, but how many songs has she written all by herself without any help from anyone? Let’s not even mention the fact that I’m not even sure she can really sing. Yes, I catch myself bobbing my head to her tunes when they come on the radio, but I’m not sure I’d be so quick to call her an artist. So if there are all these “artists” out there who sing other people’s songs and make millions and we don’t think that highly of them, then where does Aerosmith fall in this complicated equation?
Aerosmith is one of the greatest rock bands ever. They’ve written incredible music over the years, but are they “phony” because someone helped write some of their songs? I’m not so sure about that. Although I’m not a huge Desmond Child fan (that song he wrote for Vince Neil was AWFUL), he did co-write Angel and that song is amazing. Another favorite Aerosmith tune of mine is Cryin’ which was co-written with Taylor Rhodes. But Aerosmith’s demise was Don’t Want to Miss A Thing. For me that was Aerosmith’s lowest musical point, and that’s probably because they didn’t even write this song; song writing credit goes to Diane Warren (rumor has it the song was originally intended for Celine Dion…Yikes!). I don’t think Aerosmith, or any band for that matter, has any business performing songs that they didn’t at least help write.
Perhaps that’s what Zakk was talking about, that sappy, crappy musical moment where Aerosmith gave in and performed a song that wasn’t theirs; maybe he’s not even talking about songs that were co-written with other people. There are plenty of bands out there who use co-writers. Does that make them any less credible? According to Zakk, “If you can’t write songs you’re just a puppet as phony as Britney Spears and all those boy bands. If you can’t sit behind a piano or pick up a guitar and write a song, then you don’t have any business making records.” What do you think?
And check out the latest post on my blog about my ridiculous night with Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction.
Autumn is not the typical band you will find on Metal Blade Records. I was pretty surprised to find that this was one of the acts on their label. I kind of like this song, but want to see what you all think.
Should Autumn’s “The Heart Demands” SINK or SWIM? Please vote below, and feel free to leave your comments!
