When I started up Hard Rock Hideout back in 2006, I started becoming interested in taking live video from the concerts I have attended. I never had the intentions of selling or trading any of the clips I have taken, nor have I tried to make any profit off of the clips. I would sometimes post the videos in concert reviews I have written, and let them stay posted over at Youtube where a whole new generation of rock fans could explore and check out the bands that I grew up with. I was hoping that some of the clips I took would help promote the bands that I continue to write about at HRH on a regular basis. Over the last year or so, I have gotten away from taking live clips, and have tried to focus more on the pictures. It just isn’t as much fun to attend a concert with your face behind a camera the whole time. As much as I love to promote the bands I enjoy, I like to enjoy their music and live performances just as much as you do.
Over the years, I have taken well over a hundred clips with videos from Airbourne, Black Stone Cherry, Jackyl, Black Tide, Poison, Disturbed, Slipknot, Motley Crue & many more. Blabbermouth has used the videos I have taken in their news articles several times (Thank you!), and some artists have even included them in their news posts (i.e. Sebastian Bach). A couple of weeks ago, I received an email from Youtube that they cancelled the Hard Rock Hideout youtube account. Why? Dokken claimed my videos were infringing upon them.
On one hand, I have to laugh at this. The only thing my videos showed was how bad Don Dokken looked, and how bad he was singing the last time I saw Dokken perform live (which was 2008 if I recall right ). On the other hand, I am more than a little pissed off about this. If Don had asked me to remove the clips, I would have gladly done so, instead he took a different path which helped my account get terminated. Did the video clips hurt Dokken in any way shape or form? Probably not. By having his clips removed, he helped kill hundreds of other videos which were promoting the bands I have seen live over the years. Some of my videos had rare performances, band lineups that are no longer intact (some members now deceased), and lots of other cool moments. Many of my videos have had thousands of views, and had so much traffic that Youtube themselves were trying to get me to sign up for advertising where they could put an overlay ad over the top of my video. I never allowed ads to be overlaid on my clips. I was not trying to profit off of them.
Sure, I didn’t have permission to capture dear old uncle Don performing live. So that is my own fault in that regard. In one fell swoop, Don Dokken killed all of my live clips which will not be seen online again. Whether I had his permission or not, in my opinion Don Dokken did more to hurt the live music scene than he did to help it.
What is your take on live amateur video clips? Like them or hate them? Tell me why!
Kikse Somerville have released their new video, “If I Had A Wish”. I don’t know where this video was filmed, but this must be a fairly popular location, as it is the third or fourth video I have seen filmed there this year. Check out “If I Had A Wish” below.

UFO AND MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP ROCKPALAST DVD AND CD IN STORES OCTOBER 25, 2010
Starting today, EddieTrunk.com will be exclusively premiering a clip from UFO’s classic Rockpalast performance which took place November 29, 1980 at the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, Germany. The clip being premiered is a classic rendition of the UFO favorite “Doctor, Doctor”. This performance is finally being released from the Rockpalast archives and will be in stores on October 25th from MIG Music. Make sure to head over to http://www.eddietrunk.com and check out the clip today.
From the first notes of “Lettin’ Go” you can hear an experienced band celebrating a compact, homogenic, and straight forward performance. During this show they tore through their hits including: “Lights Out”, “Too Hot to Handle”, “Only You Can Rock Me”, “Cherry” as well as a magnificent cover of Elvis Presely’s “Mystery Train”. Ending the night with a breathtaking encore which included “Rock Bottom” and “Doctor Doctor”, this concert remains a stunning document of the power and perfection of one of the greatest hard rock bands that have ever existed
There are more stories about UFO than actual songs that they have composed. Any band who has been in the music business for 40 plus years are bound to have experienced difficult times, but also dazzling success. UFO’s story began in London way back in 1969, when vocalist Phil Mogg, drummer Andy Parker, guitarist Mick Bolton and bassist Pete Way formed the group, borrowing the band name from a legendary London music club. The band distinguished themselves with their very own, unmistakable style, touching a nerve among their growing following with rock numbers like ‘Prince Kajuku’, ‘Follow You Home’ or ‘C’mon Everybody’ from their albums “UFO 1”, “Flying” and “UFO Live”.
UFO’s global breakthrough came when German guitarist, Michael Schenker, joined the fold in 1973, having left his band the Scorpions to accept an offer from Phil Mogg and Pete Way. UFO released three consecutive rock classics with Schenker (“Phenomenon” (1974), “Force It” (1975) and “No Heavy Pettin'” (1976)), featuring classics such as: ‘Doctor Doctor’, ‘Shoot, Shoot’, and ‘Rock Bottom’. Following the arrival of keyboardist/rhythm guitarist Paul Raymond, UFO released the albums “Lights Out” (1977) and “Obsession” (1978), which included the hit singles ‘Too Hot To Handle’, ‘Lights Out’ and ‘Only You Can Rock Me’. Their live release “Strangers In The Night” came out in 1979 and is still considered to be one of the best live releases of all time, unfortunately, this also brought about the end of the Mogg, Way, Schenker, Parker & Raymond line-up.
Eddie Trunk continues his crusade to keep radio fresh and exciting and play the music he loves. He is currently heard on two national radio shows and seen on VH1 Classic and MSG Networks. He has also appeared on MTV several times and on Fox News Channel, worked as a freelance music journalist, boxing ring announcer, and MC for various concerts and rock events around the USA. He is the host of America’s biggest rock festival Rocklahoma in Pryor OK every July, hosts the events press conference in LA, and also consults on the lineup.

On September 29th 1991 NELSON reached the height of the US Single charts with their evergreen hit “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love And Affection”. Their music has stood the test of time and now 20 years later Matthew and Gunnar Nelson explore fresh creative territory in the present with their new album, “Lightning Strikes Twice” scheduled for first release in Europe on November 5th, with US and Asian release to follow.
Magical melodic songwriting and soaring sibling harmonies continue to ensure that this dynamic duo is still a vital part of the music scene’s future. The new album goes straight back to the absolute brilliance of NELSON’s first album, hence the title and an amazing set of songs that are going to restore the faith in NELSON.
“After the Rain” was the debut multi-platinum album by NELSON in the early 1990s. They zoomed to number one with their hit song, “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection,” which made history landing America’s iconic Nelson family (bandleader Ozzie Nelson, rock legend Rick Nelson, and twins Matthew & Gunnar) into the Guinness Book of World Records as the ONLY family in Entertainment with 3 successive generations of #1 hitmakers.
NELSON’s “After the Rain” record and tour became a phenomenon just prior to the rise of grunge. The last major success of the good time rock’n’roll era, NELSON has had (1) Number One, (4) Top Ten, and (5) Top 40 Billboard Hot 100 hit singles, plus (5) #1 MTV videos and has sold over 6.5 million albums worldwide!
Nelson has always been synonymous with entertainment in America. Matthew and Gunnar follow Ozzie Nelson’s vision of embracing connecting with people and audiences through all forms of media. They have been doing television-hosting work for VH1 and E! Gunnar is also a standout reality TV star with VH1’s “Celebrity Fit Club”. Plus, Gunnar co-hosted LIFETIME Radio’s nationally syndicated morning show.
A&E channel’s Nelson Family “Biography” episode is still one of the top-rated ‘Biography’ installments. Matthew & Gunnar embraced this fascination by creating a touring show to celebrate the TV Nelsons and the amazing career of their legendary father, Ricky, for whom LIFE magazine coined the phrase “Teen idol”. They share video clips & tell stories about their Hollywood family and perform their Pop’s music live to audiences in RICKY NELSON REMEMBERED while separately touring as NELSON.
NELSON has been headlining at major rock festivals around the globe celebrating the 20th anniversary of “After the Rain”. Touring in China, the U.K. and of course the U.S. where they have also toured extensively with Peter Frampton and Styx. In October 2010 the band will head to the UK to headline day 2 of the Firefest festival appearing with label mates Jimi Jamison, Lynch Mob, Strangeways, Pretty Maids amongst others. A world tour at the beginning of 2011 will follow.
’Lightning Strikes Twice’ has allowed us creatively, artistically and musically to resolve some unfinished business,” Gunnar says. “We’ve had a blast going into the studio writing and performing some of our best songs. Plus, being back on the road with NELSON is living the dream all over again. New fans are discovering our music and original fans have shown incredible support all over the world. It ROCKS!”
Matthew adds, “Who could believe we would be doing a NELSON sequel to ‘After the Rain” twenty years later? Gunnar and I feel it’s our best work to date and should live up to its name ‘Lightning Strikes Twice’. We believe NELSON fans will agree with that forecast and hope they feel it’s been worth the long wait.”
“Lightning Strikes Twice” tracklisting includes:
Call Me; Day By Day; Ready, Willing and Able; How Can I Miss You?; You’re All I Need Tonight; To Get Back To You; When You’re Gone; Take Me There; Come; In It For The Money; Change a Thing; Kickin’ My Heart Around.

The competition for best new band of 2010 is heating up quickly. UK rockers Jettblack are making a strong statement with their new album, Get Your Hands Dirty. The band has already played the Download festival, opened for Whitesnake, and the UK stop of Ozzfest. It will be interesting to see what else 2010 has in store for Jettblack. The band’s new CD seems to be opening up doors for them wherever they go!
Get Your Hands Dirty is packed full of late 80’s/early 90’s style of hard rock. Some rock fans may call Jettblack’s sound retro, but Jettblack is easily as good as the bands that inspired them. This CD is packed with big guitar riffs, catchy lyrics, and music that will have you throwing your horns in the air in no time. You will be hard pressed to find a bad song on this CD. From the opening number “Slip it On”, Jettblack doesn’t give you a chance to catch your breath until the mid-tempo number “Not Even Love”. Every single song rocks! Yes, every one of them!
I was pleasantly surprised by this CD, and can’t wait to see the band play live. If you want to hear revival rock done right, look no further than Jettblack’s Get Your Hands Dirty!
Get Your Hands Dirty hasn’t had an official release date in the U.S., but you still purchase a copy of the CD at this link. Don’t miss this!!

In 2008, German Rockers released their debut album, Steel of Swabia. “My Religion” was one of the gems from that CD. Check out the video below!
I have to admit that I am not very familiar with the music of New York rock band Voice of Extreme. They just released their second album Break the Silence in August, and judging from the kick ass tunes on their latest effort, I will soon be in search of the band’s debut Hypocrite.
This Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) managed band features industry veterans Don Chaffin & John Macaluso (ARK, TNT, Yngwie Malmsteen).
On the opening cut “Damned”, singer Don Chaffin offers up some powerful vocals that bring Robert Plant to my mind. The song has a Sabbath meets Soundgarden kind of vibe to it. The mixture of cool vocals, and kick ass guitar work makes “Damned” one of the many strong points on Break the Silence.
“Tell Me What It Takes” is the closest thing you will find to a power ballad in 2010. This song is pure melodic rock perfection at it’s best.
The great thing about Voices of Extreme is they aren’t afraid to mix it up. They bust out a heavy rocker with “Apocalypse”, and then roll right into the piano filled title track “Break the Silence”. “Apocalypse” is a song that I keep finding myself going back to over and over again. It is a heavy, almost grungy rocker with a very cool, almost danceable rhythm. I absolutely love this tune! “Break the Silence” teases you into thinking the band is going to break out another ballad, but instead it becomes a crafty mid-tempo number. John Macaluso’s drums truly stand out, and get your speakers thumping on this tune.
I have to admit that the song “Numb” didn’t do much for me.Rob Katrikh’s guitars are pretty good, but overall this song is a little too noisy for me. “Did It Again” is a move in the right direction. This song reminds me a of the recent George Lynch band, Souls of We. The major difference in the sound between V.O.X and Souls of We on this tune, are the vocals of Don Chaffin. Chaffin’s vocals are far superior to London LeGrand’s in my opinion.
“Hollow” is another song that for whatever reason, I just couldn’t get into. I guess I prefer the more melodic side of Voices of Extreme. Luckily, they follow this lackluster number with the awesome melodic rocker “Made of Stone”. Chaffin’s vocals are absolutely perfect on this song. AOR and Melodic rock fans ought to eat this up.
“Blown Away” is another metal-fueled, grungy rocker that is going to turn some heads, and some stereo knobs up. I love hearing Chaffin push his voice to the max on this tune.
The CD closes out with a cool rockin’ number “Sorry”. There are some really cool guitar tones in this song that I just can’t get enough of.
Overall, Break the Silence is a pretty cool release, and one that hard rock and melodic fans need to look into. Don’t miss this!

It’s been debated for decades. Since the release of Led Zeppelin in 1969 and Black Sabbath in 1970, fans, critics, and metal heads around the world have bandied about who is truly responsible for the creation of “Heavy Metal.” There’s no arguing that both Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath can make a claim to that throne. They both debuted with a sound so unique and inspiring that they could be compared to The Beatles. Both bands launched heavy metal into the mainstream and transformed the way people heard music. Without a doubt, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin are the pioneers of metal music. But which band is truly the inventor of metal music? Which band would we say metal never would have existed without them? Which band truly deserves the title of “The Godfathers of Heavy Metal?”
In the opening of his fantastic book, Bang Your Head: The Rise And Fall of Heavy Metal, author David Konow opens with this debate. He launches into the history of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin and recognizes them both as the forefathers of metal music to come. While other hard rock bands from the time are covered, there is no mistaking that there are only two bands that could compete for the throne. Those two bands are Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
Led Zeppelin is soaked in a blues style of music, but with screaming Robert Plant on vocals and the legendary, innovative Jimmy Page on guitar, a claim can be made that they are responsible for creating heavy metal. They also have the edge in that their self titled album debuted almost a year before Black Sabbath’s.
When the opening riff of “Good Times Bad Times” filled the air for the very first time, music fans paid attention. This was hard. This was heavy. This was amazing. The drum beat that kicks everything into place is a signature sound for Led Zeppelin and the hardness that is contained on their debut album resonates. This is metal (although it wasn’t called heavy metal then). Fans just knew that this music rocked.
Black Sabbath, on the other hand, was all about darkness. With an insane frontman in Ozzy Osbourne, and a guitarist that learned to play without fingertips in Tommy Iommi, Black Sabbath is the epitome of darkness. The opening notes of “Black Sabbath” (the song) just ooze dark metal. In 1970 when the album debuted, metal was an unknown form of music. Led Zeppelin had captured the imagination of teenagers with their heavy guitar laden debut album, but Black Sabbath took it to that next level.
The dark toned music, the deep lyrical content, and that scary album cover, all combined to prove that Black Sabbath was different than anything you had ever heard before. When the thunderstorm breaks and the bell tolls on “Black Sabbath” the listener knows something evil is coming. Yet even evil can be very enjoyable, as is the case on “Black Sabbath.”
Both Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath are extremely popular bands that stood the test of time over the years. Both bands still receive a ton of radio play to this day. Both bands helped to move the heavy metal scene to the forefront of modern music and inspired a ton of metal bands including Kiss, Judas Priest, AC/DC, and Iron Maiden. However, in the end, I would have to say that Black Sabbath is truly the band that started the heavy metal movement. Upon hearing Ozzy’s voice and that dark, devilish music, well, everyone wanted to perform that way. The problem is, Black Sabbath could never be duplicated. And while Led Zeppelin will always have their place in metal history, it’s Black Sabbath that deserves the credit and the title of the “Godfathers of Heavy Metal.”
Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of THE POODLES live package including the “No Quarter” CD and “In The Flesh” DVD on November 5th 2010.
Having carved in stone their reputation as prime time entertainers with the release of three acclaimed studio albums and over 350 shows in the entire Europe in the past few years, not counting Gold and Platinum record awards in their home country, THE POODLES close the first chapter of their musical adventure and set their sails for the next step.
As a tribute to the first years on the road, THE POODLES offer the fans a live package including a CD and a DVD recorded during the “Clash of the Elements” tour in 2009, which portrays the band in the most natural environment: the live show. “The high points for us as a band is anytime we go on stage”, says guitar player Henrik Bergqvist. “This may sound like somewhat of a cliché but it is no less true. It doesn’t matter if we play a crowd of 10.000 people at Graspop or in front of a handful on a rainy November Monday in Copenhagen, those are the moments we relish and live for. We’ve had so many special moments on stage over the past couple of years that it seems impossible to single even a few of them out. Having said this, some special moments can certainly be seen on the live DVD and heard on the live CD”.
“We are very proud of how the live CD and live DVD turned out and we feel that they really shows what the band is like on stage” continues Bergqvist, “being able to watch a DVD of your favourite band is great and there are a few really nice ones out there, but the connection that takes place between the band and the crowd during live shows cannot be formatted to the screen. You can catch a glimpse of it, but to experience a band live will always be different from listening to or viewing a recording of that band. Have a look and see for yourselves, though!”
Aptly titled “In The Flesh” the DVD is a real in deep look at the Poodles style of life with in-deep interviews, that present each band member, behind-the stage instant footage and a collection of the promo videoclips shot for the “Clash of the Elements” promotion. In addition, a selection of the band’s classic cuts performed live shows that the Poodles are delivering the goods when the play live. The live cd, soundtrack of the DVD, plus the song “Lullaby For Jimmy” as cd exclusive, shows that behind the look and the words there is a solid band playing great music!
Henrik concludes: “The future plans for The Poodles is closely connected to the band’s cooperation with Frontiers Records. The band expects to play for an ever expanding audience as a result of it and take the mission of Heavy Metal to virgin lands. We want to see our beloved fans again on the road and make new friends too. The future is bright for us, and that’s good because we already wear shades!”
The live CD “No Quarter” tracklisting includes:
Too Much Of Everything; Caroline; Seven Seas; Metal Will Stand Tall; Like No Tomorrow; One Out Of Ten; Lullaby For Jimmy; Drum Solo; Echoes From The Past; Thunderball; I Rule The Night; Night Of Passion; Flesh & Blood; Line Of Fire.
The Live DVD “In The Flesh” table of contents include:
Movie: Introduction; Stockholm, Party & Fun; About The Poodles; Metal Standing Tall; The Director & Crew; Being On Top; Jakob; Henrik; Pontus; Kicken; The First Five Rows; Tribute To The Fans; End Credits.
Concert: Too Much Of Everything; Caroline; Seven Seas; Metal Will Stand Tall; Like No Tomorrow; One Out Of Ten; Echoes From The Past; Thunderball; I Rule The Night; Night Of Passion; Flesh & Blood; Line Of Fire.
Extras: Like No Tomorrow (Video); I Rule The Night (Video); In The Flesh (Video); Warrior (The Movie Trailer); Majestic Film And Metal Warriors
The DVD will be released in NTSC Region Free format with Screen 16:9 and Mix in 2.0.
There will also be a limited release of a luxury packaging including the live CD “No Quarter” and the DVD “In The Flesh” is a luxury digipak edition.
“In The Flesh” trailer can be enjoyed below!
The songs “One Out Of Ten” and “Caroline” can exclusively be listened in full in streaming on the Frontiers Web radio. Tune in at: www.frontiers.it/webradio

In an announcement made today, Haunted Movies partner Jason Blum unveiled plans for the company’s next picture, The Lords of Salem, to be directed by Rob Zombie from a script by Zombie. Set in modern-day Salem, the film involves the demonic return of a 300-year-old coven of witches.
This is the third entry in a new horror slate deal between Haunted Movies and Alliance Films. The first picture to come out of this partnership is Insidious, written and directed by the original Saw team of James Wan and Leigh Whannel, and starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne. Insidious recently premiered in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto Film Festival on September 14 and immediately was the subject of a bidding war, which was won by Sony Pictures Worldwide, who will handle the release of the film later this year. The second picture is The Bay, helmed by Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson and currently shooting in South Carolina.
Octane, IM Global’s genre arm, is handling international sales on the Haunted Movies slate, including on The Lords of Salem.
Zombie has experienced great commercial success as the writer and director of five feature films, and as one of the defining rock music icons of his generation. ~The Legendary Concert Now Finally Receives Its First Authorized Release~
~on DVD and Blu-ray October 12, 2010~
On October 12, Eagle Rock Entertainment will simultaneously release the DVD and Blu-ray editions of the long-awaited Ladies & Gentlemen…The Rolling Stones. This is probably the most sought after Rolling Stones concert performance and it has been fully restored and remastered from the original film print and multitrack audio masters. Ladies & Gentlemen follows the highly successful CD reissue of Exile On Main Street (Universal Music Group) in May of this year and the Stones In Exile DVD (Eagle Rock Entertainment) on June 22, 2010. The October 12 releases will be followed shortly after by a deluxe edition box set with additional bonus material and memorabilia.
Filmed in Texas in 1972 over four nights of the “Exile On Main Street” US tour, Ladies & Gentlemen was premiered at the Ziegfield Theatre in New York on April 15, 1974 and released into selected cinemas across the USA shortly afterwards. Bonus features on this release include tour rehearsal footage from Montreux, plus two interviews with Mick Jagger; one from a 1972 Old Grey Whistle Test show, and one filmed in 2010.
The line-up for this show comprised Mick Jagger (vocals), Keith Richards (guitars), Charlie Watts (drums), Bill Wyman (bass), Mick Taylor (guitars) with Bobby Keys (saxophones), Jim Price (horns) and Nicky Hopkins (piano). Ladies & Gentlemen was billed at the time as “…the most powerful rock film ever made” and is considered by many fans to be the finest Rolling Stones performance ever captured on film. Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler will join Randy Jackson as “American Idol” judges next season, after months of turnover and speculation about the future of TV’s top-rated show.
With pomp rivaling that of a U.S. Supreme Court appointment, Fox finally assembled the new pieces of the “Idol” panel that will be returned to its original three-member format for season 10.
Actress-singer-dancer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Tyler will have the job of trying to match the offbeat chemistry of former judges Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul.
“This is ‘American Idol,'” host Ryan Seacrest said after the new trio took the stage with him.
Tyler said he wanted to join the show because “it’s being a part of something much bigger than yourself. … I want to bring some rock to this rollercoaster and show if you’ve got the heart, the talent, the feeling to do this you could be the next American Idol.”
“I’m so excited,” Lopez said. “I’m looking for the next Michael Jackson.”
The likely Lopez-Tyler pairing had been reported so frequently that Fox would have had to produce Betty White and 50 Cent instead to generate any surprise.
Cowell announced last January that he planned to leave to launch a new talent show for Fox in 2011, with newcomers Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi exiting this summer. Abdul left in 2009 over a contract dispute.
Jackson will be the only original judge when “American Idol” returns in January.
Lopez and Tyler could help “American Idol” reinvent itself for the new season, when it will try to stem a ratings slide and bring in younger viewers. The show’s audience has been gradually aging, and advertisers prefer to pitch to young adults.
But Fox and the show’s producers didn’t match the new judges to the target audience when it comes to age: Lopez is 41 and Tyler is 62. Jackson is in the middle at age 54.
Lopez’s films include “Selena,” “The Wedding Planner” and most recently “The Back-Up Plan.” She has appeared as a mentor on “American Idol.”
She was part of the “Fly Girl” house dancers on the comedy show “In Living Color,” in 1990, before becoming a backup dancer for Janet Jackson.
“On the 6,” Lopez’s first album, came out in 1999 and launched a career in pop, Latin, hip-hop and R&B. “Love?” is the latest CD from the Grammy winner, who has twins with husband Marc Anthony.
Tyler brings a colorful and tempestuous history with him. He’s fought with his band mates, been in rehab for prescription drug abuse and took a fall off a stage in 2009 that forced cancellation of Aerosmith’s summer tour.
“American Idol” was the nation’s favorite program last season, the seventh time it’s held that position. But it showed rare vulnerability, beaten in the weekly ratings several times by ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.”
A total of 24.2 million viewers watched the ninth season’s final duel between Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox, compared to the nearly 29 million viewers who saw Kris Allen claim victory over Adam Lambert last year.

Brendan McMillan: Bass/backing vocals
Doug Oliver: Drums/backing vocals
Sal Coz Costa: Lead guitar/backing vocals
“So many roads that I’ve taken/When nobody thought I could make it/And even though I had to go it alone/I still survived.” “World Belongs to Me”
The world doesn’t yet belong to My Darkest Days, but they’ve come a long way since singer/guitarist Matt Walst, drummer Doug Oliver and bassist Brendan McMillan started the band, equally influenced by hard rock groups like Nirvana, Tool and Deftones, along with the songwriting approach of the Beatles, in the small town of Norwood, Ontario, where they grew up. Walst got a first-hand glimpse at what it takes to succeed from his older brother Brad, bassist and co-founder of platinum rock band Three Days Grace, which helped when the group set out to record their debut, self-titled Mercury Records album.
“I learned to work hard and practice from them,” says Matt. “I learned how to write songs by watching how they took catchy riffs and put memorable melodies to them.”
That approach comes through for everyone to hear on the new album, co-produced by Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger—who co-wrote a majority of the songs with My Darkest Days—as well as producer and engineer Joey Moi. The first single, the raucous, rollicking “Porn Star Dancing” leads the way, an instant stripper pole classic in the mode of Motley Crue’s “Girls Girls Girls,” and Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” featuring a Kroeger cameo in two different versions, a rocker with guitarist Zakk Wylde and a rap take courtesy labelmate Ludacris.
“She wraps those hands around that pole/She licks those lips and off we go/She takes it off nice and slow/’Cause that’s porn star dancing.”
“We definitely intended to make this song a strip club anthem, and I bet you will eventually hear it in every one,” laughs Doug.
“Luda totally killed it,” remembers Matt. “We sent the song to him, he dug the track, and his rhymes are just awesome.”
“To see him in person was so cool,” nods Sal. “He was so humble. With most rap stars, you wonder what makes them so special. But the minute Luda walked into the room, you knew right away why he is where he is. He just took control, literally grabbed the video camera and began rapping.”
Taking their name from those moments where Matt says he draws his songwriting inspiration, My Darkest Days combine the rowdy celebration of rock sexuality alongside more personal observations about relationship. The salacious “Move Your Body” with its leering “You come on tapping at your back door, baby” come-on, and the sensual reggae world beat of “Setitonfire” (“I lose my mind/With the way you move”) are balanced by autobiographical tales like “Every Lie,” “Like Nobody Else” and the country twang of “Come Undone,” featuring sassy vocals from yet another labelmate, the comely Jessie James.
“Half of our music is about partying and the other half is about shitty situations we’ve gotten ourselves into,” says Walst, who writes the group’s lyrics. “I believe you have to take the good with the bad, and that comes through in our songs.”
“We wanted to show our diversity musically and lyrically,” says Sal, who joined the band almost a year ago just in time for a label showcase and to record their debut album. “As much as we are a heavy rock band, we’ve all gone through emotional moments that we want to put into our songs.”
“It’s a fucked-up situation/When the one that you love is never enough/It’s a fucked up fascination/When the one that you trust is traded for lust.”
“Fucked Up Situation” is perhaps the best example of the band’s ability to turn their life into a song that deals with an adulterous affair in a small town, where the sex has a nasty sadomasochistic side to it.
“The lyrics remind me of a classic country song,” says Brendan. “Small town, cheating wife… people are always interested in that sort of thing.”
“That chorus seems to hit home,” nods Matt. “Some people are in relationships where they love the person, but they need more.”
“That’s the key to music and life in general,” answers Sal. “Balance, the yin and the yang. At the end of the day, that’s what we’re all about.”
With the dubwise spaciousness of “Can’t Forget You” and the Police-like island rhythms of “Setitonfire,” My Darkest Days show their versatility.
“I love writing with different people,” adds Matt. “I like having different flavors on the album. I’m a big fan of Top 40 and dance music as well as hard rock. It’s cool to bring all of those into our songs.”
“If I had my way/I’d spend every day/Right by your side/And if I could stop time/Believe me/I’d try for you.” “Without You”
The band is also capable of the wide-screen cinematic epic, such as “World Belongs to Me,” which begins with what sounds like the X Files theme—an irony, since much of the album was recorded at the show’s one-time base of Vancouver, home of Nickelback—and the closing, flick-your-cell phone arena-rock anthem, “Without You,” both of which can be seen as nods to the band’s loyal and growing fan base.
And now, My Darkest Days are set to reap the rewards of the 10,000 hours Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers insist you need to perfect your craft.
Having shared the stage with Three Days Grace, Theory of a Deadman, Papa Roach and more, the group has honed their live act, winning several talent contests in their native Canada.
Even with a major label debut ready to hit the streets, My Darkest Days maintain their focus.
“Our day-to-day life hasn’t changed, even if the stakes are definitely higher,” says Brendan. “We still practice very day. There’s no screwing around. It feels good to know all those days, living on nothing, were actually worth it.”
“We’re willing to do whatever it takes,” adds Sal. “In the end, we just want to get our message out to the world.”
