It’s hard to believe that we have enjoyed the innovation that is Back In Black for 30 years. AC/DC had just started to heal from the major tragedy they faced in the loss of lead singer Bon Scott when they decided to press on. The band went into the studio with an established singer in his own right, one they were still trying to learn and understand. How AC/DC was able to put together a masterpiece like Back In Black is beyond me. Congratulations to the lads, they pulled off a beauty!
Back In Black is one of those rare albums that actually earns the title of a perfect album. Obviously opinions vary, but to me, a perfect album is one where you want to hear the next song as badly as you want to replay the last one. The songs never get old and no matter how many times you hear them, you will listen to the song when it’s on. That’s what makes a perfect album. Back In Black meets that criteria, so to me, it’s perfect.
From the opening chime of Hell’s Bells to the closing “yes!” of Rock And Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution, Back In Black is a classic. The songs also stand the test of time, being as relevant today as they were in 1980 when this album was released. The album is timeless and it’s hard to find a hard rock fan who doesn’t own at least one copy of this record in some format.
Hells Bells opens the album with the chiming of the bell that rings out thirteen times. Angus Young’s guitar strums over the chiming bell and really starts to heat things up. By the time the drums kick in, it’s obvious that something special is happening. Brian Johnson then announces his vocals and the listener is stopped in his/her tracks. What is this unique, powerful voice? What is this wondrous music?
Every song on Back In Black is a hit. If AC/DC were to ever decide to perform one album in its entirety, this would have to be the one. Shoot To Thrill shows off the genius of Angus on guitar. What You Do For Money Honey, exemplifies Brian Johnson’s vocal talent. Every song is layered with complex rhythms made to appear simple. Ever song is a massive attack to the eardrums, a pleasure to the senses. Every song makes a statement.
You Shook Me All Night Long is obviously the most well known song on Back In Black, and it may be the best song on the album, but that’s debatable. Every song on this record contains the potential to be the best. When the band went into the studio to record this masterpiece, something special happened. They bonded together over their loss and they showed the world that they were still relevant and more powerful than ever.
It’s been cited that 22 million copies of Back In Black have been sold in the US, and that 49 million copies have been sold worldwide. However impressive, those numbers alone are not what makes Back In Black perfect. It’s the feeling in the music. It’s the sweat the band put down on vinyl. It’s producer “Mutt” Lange’s ability to push the gang to their limits and capture the incredible music. It’s all of those things and more – it’s the magic that was made in the studio.
For 30 years we have enjoyed Back In Black for the amazing piece of work that it is. I am certain that we will enjoy it for 30 more (and then some). New generations of fans will be rocking out to Back In Black long after the band (and us) are in our graves. That’s an album that stands the test of time. That’s a perfect record. That is Back In Black.

Lillian Axe sent out the following message this morning:
No video seems more appropriate than Gotthard’s “Heaven” today. Rest In Peace, Steve Lee (August 5, 1963 – October 6, 2010)
Steve Lee, singer with Swiss rock band Gotthard, has died in a motorcycle accident outside Las Vegas. He was 47 years old.
Lee, who had a British father and Swiss mother, co-founded the band in 1990 which went on to become one of the most successful Swiss acts ever. Their last 11 albums all charted at number one.
Lee, who grew up in Ticino and did an apprenticeship as a goldsmith, backed up his song-writing ability – he co-wrote many of the band’s hits – with a voice well suited to power ballads.
Gotthard’s sound and look was similar to rock bands of the Eighties and Nineties such as Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. They had recently toured with Eighties rockers Whitesnake.
Gotthard’s single Heaven, featured in the television program “Greatest Swiss Hits”.
Only two months ago Lee and his wife, a former Miss Switzerland, were involved in a car crash in Florence.
From Rob Rockitt:
This is terrible news. Steve Lee was a huge talent & the voice of the killer band Gotthard that many in the U.S. never got to know. I am shocked & stunned by this major loss to the hard rock community. My condolences go out to the the Lee family & friends, as well as the Gotthard fans worldwide.

Lynam is gearing up for the release of their new live album entitled Thank You Good Night! on November 30th through Island/Def Jam digital distribution and New Ocean Media. Thank You Good Night! is the trio’s 6th album since forming in 2001 and will be the band’s final album.
“People have been asking us for years to do a live album” says frontman Jacob Lynam. “We’ve been recording our shows since 2006 using Pro Tools on our soundman’s laptop. We started listening to all the different shows from the different tours and decided to have our producer mix it and put it out.” “A lot of bands go in the studio and fix all the mistakes on their live records, but we didn’t fix anything” adds bassist Mark Lynam. “Mistakes and all, this is a live record that represents our band and we’re really proud of it.”
Thank You Good Night! was recorded at various shows from 2006 – 2010 by the bands soundman Todd ‘Pee-Nut’ Hester and mixed by Jason Elgin (Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster, Terrible Things, Collective Soul). The new album will be Lynam’s final album. “We’re not breaking up” states Jacob. “We’ve been together for a long time and we want to concentrate on new projects. We are all still best friends and will always play together moving forward, but we’re ready to explore different opportunities outside of Lynam. We toured behind Tragic City Symphony for 2 years and are looking for- ward to touring behind the new record.”
Lynam consists of Jacob Lynam (lead vocals, guitar), David Lynam (drums, vocals), and Mark Lynam (Bass, Vocals). Lynam released 3 albums independently from 2002 – 2004 (White Trash Superstar, Bling! Bling!, and Life In Reverse). In 2005, Lynam signed a deal with DRT/Universal Records and released the critically acclaimed album Slave To The Machine in 2006. This album peaked at #21 on Billboard’s Top Independent Albums chart and #19 on the Heat- seekers chart. The first single ‘Tanis’ went to #1 on both the active rock independent and main-stream rock independent charts. The band’s last album Tragic City Symphony (Megaforce/Mascot Records) featured the radio singles ‘Save My Soul’, ‘Lindsay Says’, and ‘Porn Star’. All three singles reached the top 10 on the active rock independent chart with ‘Save My Soul’ reaching top 5 with over 2 million in audience.
September was a pretty grueling month at my day job, so I was quite happy to have a rock show to unwind on Friday Night. Tracii Guns brought his version of L.A. Guns to Rhino’s in Cincinnati last Friday. If you haven’t heard, Tracii has reunited with his Shrinking Violet L.A. Guns band mate Jizzy Pearl (Love/Hate, RATT).
I have to admit that I didn’t know what to expect with Jizzy Pearl singing those classic L.A. Guns tunes. I have a copy of Shrinking Violet, and I thought the CD was good, but nothing earth shattering. Tracii Guns always kicks every time I see him live, but Jizzy Pearl singing with him was still new to me in a live setting.
Much to my surprise and liking, this version of L.A. Guns kicks ass! I thought Jizzy Pearl sounded great singing these songs. The band performed most of the L.A. Guns classics including in no special order: “Electric Gypsy”, “Bitch is Back”, “Never Enough” “Over the Edge”, “Sex Action”, “The Ballad of Jayne”, “One More Reason”, “No Mercy”, “Rip and Tear”plus two tracks off of Shrinking Violet including “Dreamtime” and “Decide”. I also got a charge out of them doing Love/Hate’s “Black Out in The Red Room”. I never got to see Love/Hate perform it live, so I loved hearing Jizzy & Company do this song. It was also the first time I have seen “Dreamtime” and “Decide” performed live. Both songs were very cool to see performed in a live setting.
The bottom line: Tracii Guns rocked, Jizzy Pearl sang great, Chad Stewart was kicking ass on the drums, and Danny Nordahl was getting it done on the bass.
I am sure the debate will continue on as far as which version of L.A. Guns is the Real or Best L.A. Guns. Both variations of the band rock in my opinion. L.A. Guns with Tracii Guns’ L.A. Guns never sounded better than they do right now!
The band will be on tour throughout the United States until the end of October. Don’t miss them if they hit your town. The remaining dates are listed below.

Dream Theater’s JAMES LABRIE is easily one of the defining, elite and naturally talented vocalists the world has to offer and he further challenges himself with an aggressive and dynamic new solo effort. Go to http://www.insideoutmusic.com/specials/jameslabrie/ to get a FREE MP3 of the song ..”Mislead..” from JAMES LABRIE’s new album, Static Impulse. All you have to do is spread the word via Facebook or Twitter and the song is yours! The album comes out on September 24th in Germany/Austria/Switzerland, on September 27th in the UK/EU and September 28th in North America.
LABRIE states: “The track ‘Mislead’ was a sleeping giant for Matt Guillory (keyboards) and I. Most of the parts came quickly, but seemed to be missing the key elements or ingredients that would keep you in its grip the entire ride. We kept playing with the interaction of the instruments and vocal melodies. Matt kept working his magic with the interplay of the keys, bass, guitar and drums. It wasn..’t until I was almost ready to lay my vocals that Matt and I felt it had all that it needed, but we wouldn..’t see the proof in the pudding until after both mine and Peter..’s vocals were laid.
“Peter..’s vocals were done before mine which enabled me to feed off his energy and really nail the attitude and personality needed for this song. What began as one of the maybe, maybe not tunes for this disc. It ultimately ended up being one of our favorites. The lyrics I wrote deal with the ever present corruption and oppression in far too many governments. I know lighten up right, I..’m light; it..’s them who need to chill out. Enjoy.”
Guillory further comments: “In the writing process, ‘Mislead’ ended up being more of a challenge than the other songs. It..’s got all the right ingredients though; dense syncopated riffing, atmospheric keyboards, melodic hooks, and over-the-top vocals. In the end, we..’re really pleased with the way it turned out. I absolutely love the contrast between James..’ crystal-clear lead vocal delivery and Peter..’s melo-death screams...”
The much anticipated new full-length offering, Static Impulse, also marks LABRIE’s first solo effort in over five years and is sure to please his legion of diehard fans, as well as win over many new devotees in the process. Static Impulse also features the immensely talented longtime songwriting partner and keyboardist Matt Guillory. Another notable performance is Peter Wildoer from metal titans DARKANE on drums and screaming vocals. The group is rounded out by Marco Sfogli on guitars and Ray Riendeau on bass. Static Impulse was mixed and mastered by the renowned Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia).

In 2005, Zombie assaulted the film world with the critically acclaimed THE DEVIL’S REJECTS (Lionsgate).
