Black Tide have just released a new behind the scenes clip from their recent photo shoot where they talk about their evolution as a band and the forthcoming sophomore album. Guitarist Austin Diaz sheds some light on the new album, “The style has changed, its gotten a lot heavier and a little bit softer at the same time. We tried a lot of new things on this one.” Drummer Steven Spence gives his opinion on the evolution, “I think our music has matured, it sounds like a band that’s been on the road for three years. It’s definitely come across on these recordings.”

Occasionally a musician has to take a step back into the past to develop artistically. Tom Englund, guitarist and vocalist of Swedish rock group EVERGREY, took this risk and reorganised his artistic environment. “The most recent EVERGREY line-up had reached a point where we no longer had fun as a group,” he confesses, adding: “So we went our separate ways to save our friendship. There were no angry words, and we’re still friends privately.”
Naturally, the decision to break up wasn’t easy for these long-standing friends, especially for Englund and his remaining keyboardist, Rikard Zander, for whom a continuation of EVERGREY was never called into question. Yet they both had to face a new challenge: “In the beginning, we weren’t sure whether we’d be able to write a new album without the wealth of experience that the previous line-up brought in. But after Rikard and I had composed a full three numbers during the first week, we felt that was a real coup.”
Listeners will feel this positive energy throughout “Glorious Collision”, the band’s eighth studio album, which is due for release on February 22nd in North America, February 25th in Germany, and the rest of Europe on February 28th via SPV/Steamhammer. The album will be released in a dynamic goody bag featuring the most diverse material ever released on an EVERGREY album. “This may sound like a contradiction in view of our personnel situation, but Rikard and I have allowed more influences on “Glorious Collision” than ever before. Some elements on “Glorious Collision” are classic rock, based on a metal format; sometimes the tracks are quiet and haunting, sometimes wild, demanding and gripping.”
This diversity is also expressed in the instrumentation of this extremely dynamic studio production which presents the new band members Marcus Jidell (guitar), Hannes Van Dahl (drums) and Johan Niemann (bass). “It’s great to hear what a breath of fresh air Marcus, Johan and Hannes have brought into the band,” Englund enthuses. “Although the entire material, except for two songs to which Marcus contributed on the compositional side, had already been decided when we started recording, they all left their own, very personal mark on this album.” The great experience of Jidell and Niemann, who have worked with acts such as Royal Hunt and Therion, among others, and have now contributed lots of positive energy together with the 20-year-old drummer, Van Dahl, can be felt throughout the album.

This New Year students around the world will have the chance to study guitar online with Steve Vai, one of music’s most influential guitarists.
Berkleemusic, the online continuing education division of Berklee College of Music, is unveiling an exclusive new online course with guitar legend, Grammy award-winning artist, and Berklee alum, Steve Vai. Steve Vai Guitar Techniques provides an unprecedented opportunity for musicians from across the globe to take an “under the hood” look at the work of one of music’s most influential guitarists, learn the secrets behind Steve’s unique playing style, and incorporate Steve’s techniques into their own playing. The Steve Vai Guitar Techniques online course builds upon the guitar curriculum Berklee has been providing to students for decades.
“What’s fascinating to me is that the barriers to learning music directly from recognized experts – whether it’s myself or the rest of Berklee’s renowned guitar faculty – no longer exist with online music education,” said Vai. “I’m intimately involved in creating this course, from the crafting of the lesson content, to providing hours of never-before-seen video, and even a dedicated live chat between myself and the online students. This truly is an evolution in the way to teach and learn guitar.”
Since Berkleemusic’s inception, more than 30,000 students from over 130 countries have studied online. Steve Vai Guitar Techniques is another powerful addition to Berkleemusic’s extensive guitar curriculum, which in 2007 received the Distance Learning College Course Award for Guitar Chords 101 from the University Professional and Continuing Education Association. Berkleemusic currently offers over a dozen online guitar courses authored and led by Berklee’s esteemed faculty covering all areas of study, both genre-based and technique based.
“We are excited and privileged to have Steve Vai join our portfolio of renowned course authors,” said Debbie Cavalier, Berklee’s Dean of Continuing Education. “This new course and partnership with Vai is a natural evolution of our ongoing dedication to providing innovative courses and incredible opportunities to students around the world.”
Steve Vai Guitar Techniques presents students with the chance to gain a deep understanding of Vai’s death-defying playing styles, repertoire, techniques and musical concepts. This 12-week online course will not only teach students to craft and perform lead lines like those in “Tender Surrender,” “For the Love of God” and “The Attitude Song,” but also will teach students Vai’s distinctive and seemingly impossible techniques such as two-hand tapping, sweep picking, sliding, pull-offs and other ear-bending licks. Each lesson will include play exercises, listening examples, hours of exclusive video, song transcriptions, a performance assignment and more. The course is taught by Vai and members of Berklee College of Music’s guitar department, who provide all students with detailed and personalized feedback on their work on a week-to-week basis.
The course is now open for enrollment for the school’s winter term which begins on January 10, 2011. For more information regarding the course, registration information and to even sample a guitar course, visit Berkleemusic.com. Additional course offerings include Guitar Chords 101, Guitar Scales 101, Blues Guitar, Class Rock Guitar and Rock Guitar Soloing and many more.

I obviously wouldn’t be writing a column for Hard Rock Hideout if I didn’t love hard rock/heavy metal music. It’s a style of music that I have enjoyed since I was a boy. I remember getting turned onto Kiss while in the 3rd grade. I bought a vinyl copy of Destroyer at a yard sale and wore it out on my Hardy Boys record player. Def Leppard, Van Halen, and AC/DC were all beloved before reaching the 5th grade. The older I got, the more my love for hard rock and heavy metal intensified. By high school, I was a real metal head. My basic musical tastes had developed into what they still are today. Heavy metal spoke to me like nothing else had. It was my new passion.
Over time, my tastes evolved and I grew an appreciation for jazz, classical music, country, and rap, but I always returned to metal music. There was something about it that spoke to me. The music was a form of expression that I could relate to. It was loud, angry, and a way to unleash frustrations through song. In my late teens/early twenties, metal was the greatest expression of me that there was. When emotional, I could turn up the volume on Metallica or Judas Priest and get lost in the wall of sound. If there was a bad day, Iron Maiden could get me through. If a scream was needed, I was just put on some Zeppelin and let it rip.
The power of metal music has always been intense and I think that’s what draws most fans to that particular type of music. There is unlimited potential in that power. Fans feel the music the way they don’t feel many things in life. From the vibrations of the bass, to the bang of the drum, to the rhythm of the guitar, to the lead singer’s voice, the power of the music is evident in every note. Hard Rock and Heavy Metal make you feel a power that no other music can bring to the table.
However, heavy metal is more than the wall of sound that baptizes your ears. It’s also about the powerful feeling that burns deep inside the listener. Metal music can make you feel invincible. It can make you feel like you were ready to take on the world. It can also help you through most rough patches in life. Did your girlfriend leave you? Slap on some Motorhead and yell along with Lemmy. Does your job make you want to stick needles in your eyes? Crank up AC/DC’s Back in Black and watch your anger melt away. Your favorite team blew yet another game? Some Ted Nugent will clear that sorrow right up.
The best thing about metal is how it brings people together. Diehard fans may feel like outcasts in certain social situations (try talking to your father-in-law about the relevance of Black Sabbath in the music world). When we meet other metal fans though, there is an immediate bond, an instant connection. And while that may be true of other genres of music as well, I’ve found it to be most evident amongst metal fans. There’s a passion there that can’t be replicated. That passion is the true heart and soul of metal music fans. That passion is drawn from the power of heavy metal. May the spirit of metal live on forever!

Frontiers Records is proud to announce the highly anticipated European release of MR. BIG’s new studio album entitled “What If… ” on January 21st, 2011. The North American release, also on Frontiers records, shall follow in February with more exciting details to be announced!
“What If… ” is MR. BIG’s first “all original” album since the reunion of the four original members, Eric Martin, Paul Gilbert, Billy Sheehan and Pat Torpey back in early 2009. Sixteen years after the release of “Hey Man“, the new recording is set to bring back MR. BIG on the height of the current Hard Rock scene.
Guitarist Paul Gilbert said: “This is the first MR. BIG album I have been a part of, since fourteen years and it was done in a snap. It was fun and we had really a good time in making this one”. Continues Billy Sheehan “It’s so great to be back with Paul, Eric and Pat too. We wrote this record like we did in the old days for the first 2 records. Jamming together in the same room to write songs”. Pat Torpey adds ““Some of the recording process is different now from what we were used to in the old times. But I think this record really managed to capture the performances of the band, not of the individual musicians”.
Eric Martin concludes: “I like to compare this to the first album, when we just got to know each other in a reharsal studio and cut it in 8 or 9 days. This is like chapter 2. We had so many years, so many records and so many things behind us. Now this feels like a beautiful brand new chapter starting for all of us”.
“What If…” was produced by Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Rush, Iron Maiden) and the release will be followed by a World Tour which will kick off in South America in March and will hit Europe in early summer.
Formed in 1988, Mr. Big forged its place in hard rock history by combining trademark “shredding” musicianship with awesome vocal harmonies. The original line-up – vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert, bassist Billy Sheehan, and drummer Pat Torpey. Mr. Big produced numerous hit songs that ranged across a wide array of rock genres – be it ballads, heavy metal, or blues rock.
Their hits included “To Be With You” (Billboard Hot 100 number one single in 15 countries for weeks, in 1991, propelling the band the band to huge international success and record sales in the multi-millions), “Wild World”, Green-Tinted sixties Mind”, “Just Take My Heart”, and a host of heavy metal songs that were played mostly during their live performances: “Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy”, “Addicted to that Rush”, “Colorado Bulldog”, and “Take Cover”.
“What If…” will be released in a special edition CD + DVD in digipak, regular CD, vinyl and digital download and in a limited edition luxury box including the CD, DVD, LP and exclusive memorabilia.
“What If…” tracklisting includes: Undertow; American Beauty; Stranger In My Life; Nobody Takes the Blame; Still Ain’t Enough for Me; Once Upon a Time; As Far As I Can See; All The Way Up; I Won’t Get In My Way; Around The World; I Get The Feeling; Unforgiven (exclusive bonus track for Europe / North America – not on vinyl edition).
The DVD will include the videoclips of “Undertow” and “All the Way Up” plus a documentary “Making of” the album including interviews and exclusive behind the scenes features of the four members.
The first single “Undertow” will have an official promotional launch on November 27th.

American Bang has been out on the road in support of their major label, self-titled, debut album. The boys in the band were kind enough to take a few moments out of their busy schedule to answer a few questions for Hard Rock Hideout. Hard Rock Hideout (HRH): What was the recording process like for your major label debut album?
American Bang (AB): We cut the band live at Blackbird Studios in Nashville and then we went to Maui – where Bob Rock lives – and did some guitar overdubs and Jaren sang his vocals.
HRH: How did this differ from your prior recordings (I Shot the King) & (Move To the Music)?
AB: We recorded about the same way that we have in the past, this time we just had the luxury of having more time and a nicer studio to work in.
HRH: You were originally known as Bang Bang Bang. Why did you change your name to American Bang?
AB: Our first gig was on the 4th of July in 2005 and so when we were having some legal trouble with our old name we sat around for a couple days brainstorming and we landed on AMERICAN BANG. It felt like our band and was a BIG sounding name which is what we wanted.
HRH: What’s your favorite song on American Bang?
AB: Tough Question… I think we all really like All We Know. It was the last song written for the record and still feels new and fresh and it’s a fun listen on the album cause it gets to stretch out a little more.
HRH: Who was the inspiration behind I Wouldn’t Want To Be You?
AB: It’s a general thought about parents being hypocritical towards their kids, I think. Just because you are an adult doesn’t mean you’ve got it all figured out and sometimes I think that’s easily overlooked. That story kind of comes out of seeing that happen to friends around us from time to time growing up.
HRH: You just wrapped up a tour in support of your self-titled debut – any stories that you can share?
AB: There’s been a lot of great stories! About a month ago we played Columbia, SC. and we were in the middle of Wild & Young and everyone was singing along and then all the sudden the power goes out in the whole building! About 10 minutes later it’s fixed and so we jump back on stage and finish the song from the point where the power went out. You never know what to expect from a live show!
HRH: What was your favorite stop on this most recent tour? Why?
AB: We did Austin, TX a few weeks back and we always just have such a great time down there. It’s a great music town. The crowds are really supportive of music and the downtown is one of the best places to hang in America.
HRH: Do you have plans to get back out on the road in the near future?
AB: We are out still for the rest of the year and will be into next year as well. We are doing some headlining shows this month in the Southeast and then we are doing a bunch of Radio Festivals in December with a lot of cool bands!
HRH: What bands would you like to go on tour with?
AB: Against Me, Pearl Jam, Tom Petty, My Morning Jacket, and on and on and on.
HRH: How long until you’re headlining Madison Square Garden?
AB: That might take a minute !
HRH: Have you been writing material for the next record?
AB: We have a few ideas we’ve been kicking around, but we are still focused on working this record for a while to come yet!
HRH: When do you plan to go into the studio to record your next album?
AB: I’d guess we’ll go in some time next year but there aren’t any plans right now.
HRH: What does the immediate future hold for American Bang?
AB: Tour, Tour, Tour!!!!!! Look out for us and come have a beer with us at the show!

HEAVY ARTILLERY RECORDS is pleased to announce the scheduled release of Shocking Its Prey, the debut release from Richmond, VAs high-powered heavy metal quintet VOLTURE. The six track debut will be unleashed worldwide on January 25th 2011 on CD and limited edition Mini-LP formats. The tracks Volture and Heavy Metal Machine from the forthcoming Shocking Its Prey are available for preview now via the official VOLTURE Myspace profile.
With the humblest beginnings the seeds for VOLTURE were first laid in November 2008. Inspired by a mutual interest in obscure NWOBHM and early European heavy metal VOLTURE was born when friends Ryan Waste (of MUNICIPAL WASTE) and Nick Poulos over a few beers agreed to channel those mutual interests into a fully realized project. With Ryan and Nick, respectively, on bass and guitar they were soon joined by vocalist Brent Hubbard and drummer Barry Cover, who had previously worked with Ryan in 2003 in a band called IMMORTAL AVENGER. Also joining the fold was Ryans fellow MUNICIPAL WASTE band mate, Landphil on rhythm guitar. Throughout 2009, a demanding tour schedule with their other bands left the members of VOLTURE with minimal time to practice. Landphil left the band and the remaining four focused their attention on writing during this time. In January 2010 the four piece entered a small studio in Ryans neighborhood to lay down the tracks for Shocking Its Prey, sans any modern studio trickery solely relying on capturing VOLTUREs natural ability to unleash raw, unedited heavy metal fury.
Upon putting the finishing touches on Shocking Its Prey, VOLTURE welcomed to its ranks guitarist Dave Boyd, known for his work with heavy metal stalwarts TWISTED TOWER DIRE. With the line up in place and forthcoming mini lp, work on creating its own iconography begun by envisioning VOLTURE as an electric bird made of steel, shocking its prey to an untimely demise came into focus. This vision was brought to life by artist Sean McGrath and perfected in paint by the great Andrei Bouzikov, all under the direction of Ryan. With all of the creative pieces in place VOLTURE came to the attention of New Yorks purveyors of steel, HEAVY ARTILLERY RECORDS, whom will release Shocking Its Prey in all of its glory world wide on January 25th, 2011.
With tour plans and a full length album on the horizon, the future is bright for VOLTURE as they shock the music world back to life with their brand of true heavy metal!

Pop Evil’s new single “Last Man Standing” has been chosen to be featured in upcoming promotional spots for NASCAR‘s Sprint Cup Series. The song comes from the band’s new Johnny K (Disturbed, Staind, 3 Doors Down) produced album War Of Angels, which is set to hit stores February 8th through Universal Republic.

Through their official website (www.linkinpark.com) LINKIN PARK has announced dates for their US tour, kicking off January 20th in Sunrise, Florida. Supporting Linkin Park on various dates on the cross continent trek are The Prodigy, Pendulum and Does It Offend You, Yeah?
Tickets to the general public will begin going on sale Saturday, November 20 but fans can go to www.linkinpark.com to learn how to get their tickets beginning immediately through a special offering on the band’s web site.
Prior to the 2011 US tour — which will be the band’s first since 2008, they completed a highly-acclaimed, sold-out tour of Europe which garnered rave reviews. Touring in support of their recently released album, A Thousand Suns, which debuted on top of the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart, Linkin Park’s live show is a celebration of sound and vision — a transformative multi-media experience that befits the power of the music. The press has been buzzing about the most recent shows in Europe. The UK’s Guardian says, “The stage is decked out with giant screens, but it’s low and reaches right into the arena, giving simultaneous impressions of a spectacle and being ‘one with the fans,'” and London’s Evening Standard called the band’s 2 night sold-out stand at the O2 Arena, “exhilarating.”
The tour’s set list combines the biggest hits of the band’s career, as well as material from the new album, which has been described as a psychedelic journey that explores the conflict between technology and humanity. Lead vocalist Chester Bennington says, “The new songs work really well alongside the older stuff. Plus, there’s a strong, powerful message to A Thousand Suns, and we’ve transferred that into the show. Our aim was that we’re not just putting on a live performance, but something that’s visually spectacular as well.”
Linkin Park was just voted ‘Best Live Act’ at the 2010 MTV European Music Awards. As a special “thank you” to concert goers, included as a bonus with the purchase of every ticket, fans will be able to download a live recording of the show they attended by texting a code from their mobile phones that will be displayed at the venue. Additionally, one dollar for each ticket purchased will go to Music For Relief, a charity founded by Linkin Park to provide relief to victims of natural disasters and to bring awareness to solutions to the global warming challenge.
Joining Linkin Park on tour will be UK legends, The Prodigy opening the show from February 15th through 26th. Pendulum and Does It Offend You, Yeah? will be kicking off the tour on January 20th thru February 11th.

The forthcoming solo album from PRIMAL FEAR singer Ralf Scheepers is in the very final stages of production. Some very special guests agreed to appear – the list includes guitarists “Metal” Mike Chlasciak (HALFORD), Kai Hansen (GAMMA RAY), Sander Gommans (AFTER FOREVER) and Magnus Karlsson (PRIMAL FEAR, ALLEN/LANDE). Powerhouse American vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH) is dueting with Scheepers in the track “Remission Of Sin“, Swedish multi-instrumentalist Snowy Shaw (THERION, DREAM EVIL, KING DIAMOND, DIMMU BORGIR) appears on drums and PRIMAL FEAR’s Mat Sinner is playing bass on the entire LP and produced the album. Achim Koehler is currently in the final stages of the mixing session and will shortly be mastering the production.
Scheepers revealed that his upcoming solo album will include a remake of his song “Saints Of Rock” Scheepers originally recorded with his band TYRAN PACE and a cover version of the JUDAS PRIEST classic “Before The Dawn’. “‘Saints Of Rock’ is gonna be, of course, a little bit more modern and updated than it was [when the original version was recorded] in 1986,” he explained. “I mean, right now we have much more possibilities to make songs sound a little bit more modern, starting with the drum sound and the bass sounds.” He added, “I think ‘Before The Dawn’ pretty much is a straight cover, but the first song I’m playing (nearly) all instruments just a little more orchestral things going on. Vocal-wise, I just added a harmony vocals, plus the two outstanding guitar solos by maestro VICTOR SMOLSKI (RAGE). The album is like a trip through my entire career from hard driven crushing metal, groovy heavy beats, orchestral epic to stripped down basic songs and of course some nice surprises!”
The musical direction of his forthcoming solo CD is more diverse than PRIMAL FEAR, from the hardest to the softest tones. The album was recently presented to the German press and some of the reactions included
“A varied, magic masterpiece! Intensive, passionate and faithful – a terrific singer!” – Markus Wosgien (Rock It!, EMP, Blast!)
“A surprisingly varied and still compact metal-masterpiece, that leaves nothing to be desired!” – Andreas Schöwe (Metal Hammer)
“The vocals and the songwriting are just terrific and you’ve never experienced Ralf Scheepers so relaxed. The album is a hit! Does the world needs a solo album of the Primal Fear singer? Yes, of course!” – Birgit Braeckle (Breakout)
Frontiers plans to release the album in February 2011.
I can’t think of may rock releases in 2010 that I have been looking more forward to than Alter Bridge’s third effort AB III. Alter Bridge’s previous release Blackbird was excellent, and one of my favorite CD’s of 2007. My hopes were high that AB III would be at that same high level. After hearing Myles Kennedy’s fine work on Slash’s CD earlier this year, it only whet my appetite even more to hear some new Alter Bridge music.
AB III has a ton of new music to digest, and chances are, you won’t do it in one sitting. The regular version of the CD has over an hour of music, and the Best Buy Edition , with its two bonus tracks, clocks in at over 70 minutes. With that being said, I believe AB III is more of a grower type of CD, but there are many flashes of brilliance on this disc that will take several spins to fully absorb.
First and Foremost, Myles Kennedy’s vocals on this disc are AWESOME. Kennedy is easily one of the most talented singers in rock today, and his voice shines big on AB III.
The opening song, “Slip To The Void” is a powerful number that may just be one of the heaviest Alter Bridge songs to date. Chances are you have heard this first single off of AB III, “Isolation”, and you already know how heavy this song this. “Isolation” and “Slip To The Void” offer up two great, heavy songs right out of the gate, and set the tone for AB III. This easily Alter Bridge’s heaviest and darkest album to date.
“Ghost of Days Gone By” is much like a spark that turns into a roaring wildfire. At first it seemed that this song was mixed in as a pace breaker for the first two heavy cuts. The song starts slow but builds into yet another heavy number. I have mixed feelings on this tune. I think it could have stood out better without the heavy rocker it morphs into.
“Make It Right” is one of the more catchy songs on AB III. I hope Alter Bridge releases this as a single. It could be a big hit for the band.
“Wonderful Life” shows a different side of Alter Bridge. This is a slower number that showcases the powerful voice of Myles Kennedy. Kennedy shows his impressive range, on this incredible number. This is a well written number that will make even the non Alter Bridge fan say “WOW”! Anyone that has ever been in a relationship will relate to this song.
Some of the other highlights on this album are “Coeur D’alene”, “Life Must Go On”, “Words Darker Than Their Wings”. Both of the bonus tracks, “Zero” and “Home” are pretty solid tunes making the Best Buy version of the disc the best overall value.
I have played AB III heavily over the last couple of weeks, and while it has some great songs, it does not surpass its predecessor Blackbird. It is still a very solid album, and one that Alter Bridge, or Myles Kennedy fans should not miss.

Andre Matos, Timo Tolkki, Uli Kusch, Mikko Harkin, Jari Kainulainen,
None of these musicians need an introduction.
They are all legends among the melodic metal community.
By sheer coincidence, they all found themselves living on the same continent, in Scandinavia. They decided to join forces and express their talents in the form of a new melodic metal project: SYMFONIA.
Honoring the heritage of their previous bands Stratovarius, Helloween, Angra and Sonata Arctica, SYMFONIA continues their superb melodic metal tradition with an incredible musicianship that is a match made in heaven. This is a force that no serious melodic metal fan will be able to ignore.
SYMFONIA will make its World Premiere 18.2 at the Finnish Metal Expo, an International Metal Meeting, where they will take the stage at 11PM in the evening.
The recordings for the debut album of SYMFONIA will start in November at Studio Mega in Sweden, for a Spring 2011 release.

“Unlike many of their contemporaries they’ve steered clear of orchestral interference. No, they’ve not gone death/thrash/black or any other non-metallic offshoot, but this isn’t galloping rhythms end-to-end.” – Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles
“…an enjoyable power metal release that thankfully leaves the cheese at home and delivers potent tunes that are well played and memorable.” 4/5 – Sea of Tranquility
“Whether you’re a new Gamma Ray fan, or if you’ve followed them since 1990, you’ll love this album.” – Metal Assault
