Bonafide – Fill Your Head With Rock – Old, New, Tried & True(2011)
Swedish Rockers Bonafide have just released a new EP. Fill Your Head With Rock – Old, New Tried & True, has two songs from the band’s previous effort Something’s Dripping, plus some cool cover tunes, a new unreleased song, “Kick Me Out”, and the band’s videos “Hard Livin’ Man” and “No Doubt About It”.
I like the shortened version of “Fill Your Head With Rock” as well as “No Doubt About It”. They were amongst my favorites on Something’s Dripping. The real star on this EP is the unreleased song, “Kick Me Out”. This is a fun upbeat AC/DC influenced rocker, and the best song on the EP, in my opinion.
I found it interesting that two of the covers on this EP, “I Don’t Need No Doctor” (Ray Charles) and “I Can’t Explain” (The Who) have already been covered by W.A.S.P. and The Scorpions. For Bonafide to cover these songs, they had better put forward their best effort. Thankfully, that is exactly what Bonafide did. I think Bonafide’s version of “I Don’t Need No Doctor” is even better than the version from W.A.S.P. ‘s classic album, Inside the Electric Circus. I have always loved The Who’s “I Can’t Explain”, and Bonafide does a very good job with their cover.
“Nice Boys Don’t Play Rock ‘N’ Roll” is easily one of the biggest songs of Rose Tattoo’s career. Bonafide does a good job paying homage to Rose Tattoo with their version of this song.
Usually, I am not a big fan of cover tuness, but the cover songs on this EP give you a very good feel as to what Bonafide’s music is all about. If you have never listened to Bonafide before, Fill Your Head With Rock – Old, New, Tried & True is a cool way to discover this kick ass hard rock band.

To me, the definitive cover version of I Don’t Need No Doctor will always be the one that Humble Pie did on Rockin’ The Fillmore back in 1971. That’s the first version that took the Ray Charles soul classic, and layered that killer hard rock riff on top of it.
