Coldspell – Out From The Cold (2011)
Coldspell has returned in 2011 with the follow-up effort to their awesome debut, Infinite Stargaze. For Coldspell’s new CD, Out From the Cold, the band has a new rhythm section with drummer Perra Johanson & Anders “Kebbe” Lindmark on bass. The Coldspell lineup for 2011 has changed but the band’s awesome sound has not. Tommy Hansen (TNT, Helloween, Pretty Maids) mixed this CD, and Out From The Cold picks right up where Infinite Stargaze left off!
Coldspell’s music is some times heavy, always melodic, and very pleasing to my ears. Niklas Swedentorp’s vocals are perfect for this style of music. He has a solid range in his voice, but never over sings the songs. Michael Larsson is a top-notch guitarist who has plenty of tasty guitar licks on this CD. His playing is augmented by the keyboards of Matti Eklund. There are some instances on Out From The Cold where Eklund appears to be playing a Hammond B3. The B3 has such a cool sound, and helps to give some of Coldspell’s songs a cool, almost Deep Purple like vibe.
The first song I heard from the CD was the first single “Heroes” (see video below). I was sold on this CD as soon as I heard this song, but this great rock doesn’t stop here. “Run For Your Life” is another great rockin’ tune that does a good job keeping the pace of the album going. If there was any justice in the world, this song would get a ton of airplay!
I don’t know if it is the rhythm of the song, or what it is, but ”One In A Million” reminds me a lot of the (Lynch era) Dokken’s style of music. ”Six Feet Under” is a very catchy rocker that has been growing on me a lot. One of the highlights on Out From the Cold, is the song “Time”. I keep finding myself turning up the volume every time I play this upbeat rocker.
Another song I would like to mention is the title track, “Out From the Cold”. This song has a slow acoustic build, but turns into a beast of a heavy tune. This may be one of the heaviest songs Coldspell has ever done. It may not grab you on the first listen, but give it a chance, this is really great stuff.
Overall, there are a bunch of cool tunes on this disc, but the real stand out songs are “Heroes”, “Run For Your Life”, “Time” and the upbeat rocker “Seven Wonders”.
If you are a fan of heavy melodic rock bands like Gotthard, Europe, or Whitesnake, you will find a lot to love with Coldspell’s Out From The Cold. Iff you are a fan of the debut CD, Infinite Stargaze, you need to pick this up now!! Recommended!!
