KITTIE have debuted a brand new music video for the track “Empires (Part 2)”. This video is one of two that the band shot with director David Brodsky.
Check it out here!
Front woman Morgan Lander offers her own words, “‘Empires (Part 2)’ is the second half, and more frantic portion of a two part idea. Part 1 is the acoustic calm before the storm while Part 2 is a full on hurricane. The subject matter likens a union or relationship to the idea of a great empire and as history has taught us; even the most mighty and powerful of empires crumble and fall eventually. Nothing is forever.”
KITTIE will release a brand new record entitled “I’ve Failed You” on August 30th, 2011 via eOne Music. For this effort, the band enlisted the talents of Siegfried “Siggy” Meier at Beach Road Studios in Goderich Ontario who took on producing rolls.
The band recently debuted the first single entitled “We Are The Lamb” which can be heard HERE. “‘We Are The Lamb is the first single and is about as musically devastating as we get. It is a tale of self sacrifice, to give those you love a chance to grow and learn to live for themselves. I cannot express to you how proud of this album we are. ‘I’ve Failed You’ is real, honest, angry and ugly” concludes Lander.
1. I’ve Failed You
2. We Are The Lamb
3. Whisper of Death
4. What Have I Done
5. Empires (Part 1)
6. Empires (Part 2)
7. Come Undone
8. Already Dead
9. Never Come Home
11. Time Never Heals
The band recently hit the road on a headlining run spanning the entire US including the notorious “Gathering Of Juggalos” festival. DIRGE WITHIN and DIAMOND PLATE will offer support.
KITTIE is: Morgan Lander (guitar), Mercedes Lander (drums), Tara McLeod (guitar) and Ivy Vujic (bass).
Between 1977 and 1982 Queen officially became the most successful band in the world, releasing some of the biggest and best songs of all time including ‘Tie Your Mother Down’, ‘Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy’, ‘We Are The Champions’, ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’, ‘Bicycle Race’, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’, ‘Save Me’, ‘Play The Game’, ‘Another One Bites The Dust’, ‘Flash’ and ‘Under Pressure’ which features David Bowie.
On September 13, just 8 days after what would have been the 65th birthday of late legendary lead vocalist, Freddie Mercury, Hollywood Records will reissue deluxe editions of the five Queen albums from this period – ‘News of the World’, ‘Jazz’, ’The Game’, ‘Flash Gordon’ and ‘Hot as part of the band’s 40th Anniversary celebration.
These five albums were recorded as Queen’s success spread worldwide – to the USA, South America, Europe and Asia and are the sound of a band breaking through the crash barriers of their own limitless ambition. The early 80’s saw the band conquer South America for the first time, creating rock history when they played at the Morumbi Stadium in Brazil – then the largest paying audience for a single band anywhere in the world.
If the early 70’s and the first five albums Queens released represented the band’s hard-rocking years, then the late 70’s and early 80’s represented their hard partying era. As Brian, Roger, Freddie and John toured the world their reputation for off-stage rock’n’roll extravagance grew with stories of legendary party excess from Kensington to Copacabana informing the Queen mythology.
The Queen image changed too in the second half of the 70s. Infamously Sid Vicious bumped into Freddie Mercury at Wessex Studios where both Pistols and Queen are recording – ‘Ullo Fred – I see you’ve bought ballet to the masses then!’ Says Sid, eyeing up Freddie’s legendary ballet pumps, ‘Ah Mr Ferocious. Yes, doing my best dear’ retorted Freddie.
It was also during this period that one of the most iconic images in contemporary music was developed, when in 1980 Freddie Mercury grew perhaps the most famous moustache of modern times! Inspired by his adventures in the New York nightlife of the late 70’s, the moustache and attendant leathers completely reinvented the band’s look. Famously the moustache caused outrage among many fans that mailed him disposable razors!
Queens 40th Anniversary year has kicked off in spectacular style so far with a major art & photography exhibition ‘Stormtroopers in Stilettos’ in London’s East End. Meanwhile, the bands first five albums have been reissued to considerable acclaim.
Rolling Stone gave the first set of reissues the magazine’s highest rating of five-stars, describing the collection’s “instrumental intensity” as a “compelling portrait of vehement and violent art.”
Queen’s next round of remasters will highlight the more refined and diverse talent, musical ambition and global success of a band made up of some of the best songwriters, musicians and performers of all time.

Guitarmaggedon came to the Alrosa Villa Saturday Night. It isn’t very often when you get the chance to see two bands in the same night that have guitarists the caliber of George Lynch, Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert. I have been fortunate enough to see both bands earlier this year, but it is this Mr. Big show I will remember best.
A couple of local bands Karma 10, and Dirty Side Down opened this show, and I have to give Kudos to both of those bands. Karma 10 played some originals as well as covers. This was the first show for Karma 10’s new guitarist Richie Baier. Baier was pretty damn good, and showed a lot of chemistry with the band for being his first show.
Dirty Side Down was up next, and they did a stellar job at getting the crowd revved up for Lynch Mob and Mr. Big. Singer Dan Compton looked like a cross between Disburbed’s David Draiman and Rob Halford from Judas Priest. He had a pretty impressive vocal range, and sang quite a few songs that most bands would dare touch, including Queensryche’s “Queen of the Reich”, Iron Maiden’s “Where Eagles Dare” and RATT’s “The Morning After”. I am usually not big on cover bands, but I would go see Dirty Side Down again in a heartbeat. They were really good.
The same can not be said for Lynch Mob unfortunately. It was an off night for Mr. Lynch and company. The last time I saw Lynch Mob back in January, the band had Oni Logan, and “Wild” Mick Brown drumming. It has been well reported that Oni Logan bailed on the tour at the last minute, and former Lynch Mob singer Chaz West rejoined the band on short notice. Chaz West was not the problem this evening. Chaz sounded pretty good for the most part. It seemed that George, and Lynch Mob’s new drummer, Ray? Brown (Mick’s brother) could not get in sync. George had to cut his infamous tune “Mr. Scary” short. He looked pretty frustrated. Before long, the band packed it up and called it a day. They played for 35 – 40 minutes tops. It seems like to me, the band needed to rehearse a couple of times with the new drummer before playing live. This appearance came across as amateurish at best. I was pretty disappointed with their performance overall. This is the only show, that Lynch Mob was playing with Mr. Big, and lucky for them, Mr. Big made EVERYONE forget about Lynch Mob’s set.
Earlier this year, before this tour was announced, Mr. Big made their only U.S. appearance at the M3 Rock Festival. To me, they were one of the best bands at M3, but they were far better at the Alrosa Villa Saturday night. You see, when Mr. Big plays at a big music festival, their set is condensed, and you don’t get a real Mr. Big show. Saturday night, Mr. Big played for over two hours, and played every Mr. Big tune you would want to hear, and a few you wouldn’t expect. They also played a few songs off of their new album What If…. including “American Beauty” and “Undertow” which sounded great live, and was met with a pretty good reception to the sold out crowd. Both Paul Gilbert and Billy Sheehan had their chances to shine in this show with cool solos. Paul Gilbert’s guitar solo was easily the best I have seen in 2011. I think he is the first guitarist I have seen to play the guitar with his mouth. He is one incredible musician. Billy’s bass solo was pretty awesome as well. Eric Martin never gets enough credit being stuck between Sheehan and Gilbert, but he was awesome last night. He interacted with the crowd quite a bit, and got a kick out of his on stage antics. His vocals were perfect Saturday Night.
The encore featured two killer Mr. Big tunes “To Be With You”, and “Colorado Bulldog”. The band also did an extremely cool version of Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” where the band changed instruments. Paul Gilbert was playing the drums, Eric Martin lead guitar, Pat Torpey was playing bass, and Billy Sheehan was signing. Mid song, they changed it up again. Eric Martin took over on bass, Pat took over on vocals, and Billy Sheehan was playing lead guitar. I haven’t ever seen an entire band change instruments like this during a show. It was fun and extremely impressive to see. The show closed out with a killer version of the Talas tune “Shyboy”.
If you get a chance to see Mr. Big Live on this tour, you really ought to do so. They put on a whale of a performance, and was easily one of the best shows I have seen in 2011. You can check their tour dates at this link. Check out our photo gallery below!

On July 23, former WARRANT singer Jani Lane — who was found dead on Thursday in a Los Angeles-area hotel — took part in a taping of an upcoming episode of the “That Metal Show”alongside Michael Sweet (STRYPER) and Taime Downe (FASTER PUSSYCAT). The flag is at half staff today at Hard Rock Hideout. I am still mulling over the news about the passing of Jani Lane, and I am still shocked and saddened that he is gone. Even though Jani was no longer performing with Warrant, I thought he was going to turn his career around, and we might finally see the release of the long awaited Jabberwocky CD. That will probably never happen now. I knew Jani had his demons, but I never in my wildest dreams expected to hear the news of his death. Jani joins a long list of great musicians who have left us far too soon. May he rest in peace!
In honor of Jani Lane, I have posted the following video clips of Jani with Warrant. These videos make me miss him even more.
According to TMZ.com former WARRANT singer Jani Lane was found dead at a hotel in Los Angeles Thursday evening (August 11). He was 47 years old.
Lane’s body was discovered at the Comfort Inn hotel in Woodland Hills, California. So far, no official cause of death has been released.
In February, Lane canceled all of his previously announced solo tour dates two days before the first show was due to take place. No explanation was offered for the cancelation.
WARRANT announced in September 2008 that it was splitting with Lanesix months after the band first reunited with the troubled vocalist. He has since been replaced by Robert Mason (LYNCH MOB, CRY OF LOVE, BIG COCK).
On July 19, 2010, Lane pled no contest to DUI stemming from his most recent arrest back in May 2010 — and was ordered to serve 120 days in jail. In addition, Lane lost his license for three years and had to complete a 30-month alcohol-education program.
Lane originally left WARRANT in 2002 to pursue a solo career. He released a solo album, “Back Down to One”, in 2003, but shortly after was admitted to a rehab center for alcohol and drug-related exhaustion. He also appeared on VH1’s reality series “Celebrity Fit Club”.
When asked in a May 18, 2009 interview with “The Johnny Dare Morning Show” how he managed to “get straight,” Jani replied, “It’s just a matter of deciding you’re done, in my opinion. I mean, that probably oversimplifies it, but really, really and truly you have to go, ‘You know what? I’m done with this. I don’t like feeling like this, I don’t like living like this.’ And it’s also nice to get the creativity back, which is impossible to flow when you’re unconscious.”
From Rob Rockitt: I am stunned and saddened by this news. I have been a fan of Jani Lane from the beginning and have the pleasure of meeting him. My condolences go out to Jani’s family and friends.
Over the years, legendary singer Ronnie James Dio fronted some of the most popular/enduring hard rock/heavy metal bands of all-time, including Rainbow, Black Sabbath/Heaven & Hell, and Dio.
But before all of these bands, there was Elf. Described as a “Rock/Honky Tonk/Blues band,” a forthcoming release, ‘And Before Elf…There Were Elves,’ will prove that Ronnie could easily handle other rock-related styles.
Released on October 11th via the Niji Entertainment Group, ‘And Before Elf’ will feature twelve previously unreleased tracks (all from 1971), comprised of both live in the studio and live on stage tracks.
The album will feature a striking Lenticular/3D/Hologram cover, that when you turn it, you will see two alternating images – Ronnie from the first Elf LP, as well as a vintage group shot from 1971. And although these recordings are 40 years old, the sonic quality still passes the test, as longtime Dio engineer Wyn Davis remastered the original tapes.
Formed in 1967 in Cortland, New York, The Elves also featured other members that would carve a niche for themselves in the hard rock world!
Guitarist David “Rock” Feinstein (Dio’s cousin) would go on to front the Rods. Elf would last for a trio of albums, before Ronnie exited the group in 1975, to co-form Rainbow with ex-Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore.
Ronnie James Dio always had the golden touch as a masterful singer and frontman.
And upon hearing ‘And Before Elf…There Were Elves,’ you’ll discover he possessed his one-of-a-kind voice from the very beginning of his career.
“And Before Elf…There Were Elves” Track Listing:
1. You Shook Me
2. Stay With Me
3. Four Day Creep
4. Buckingham Blues

8. You Felt The Same Way

The Straits have just announced a special one-off “warm-up” concert at the Brighton Concorde2 on Tuesday September 20th. Tickets go on sale at 10am GMT on Friday August 12th from 01273 673 311, www.concorde2.co.uk/news.
The intimate one-off warm-up concert precedes the band’s 10-date nationwide UK tour “The Sound of Dire Straits” which kicks off at the Birmingham Symphony Hall on Monday October 3rd. Very special guest on all dates is Jon Allen. The UK tour also takes in dates at Newcastle City Hall, York Barbican, Cardiff St Davids Hall, Bristol Colston Hall, London HMV Hammersmith Apollo, Ipswich Regent Theatre, Nottingham Royal Concert Hall, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and Manchester O2 Apollo. Tour info: www.noblepr.co.uk/Press_Releases/TheStraits/tour.htm.
Due to huge public demand to hear Dire Straits’ hits performed live, original Dire Straits keyboardist Alan Clark formed new band ‘The Straits’ – including Alan on keyboards, Dire Straits’ saxophonist Chris White and guitarist Phil Palmer, Tom Petty’s drummer Steve Ferrone, bassist Mick Feat (Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour), and keyboardist Jamie Squire. Clark, who first joined Dire Straits in 1980 for the “Making Movies” album, recruited South African singer/guitarist, Terence Reis, to step into Mark Knopfler’s shoes as front man.
In May 2011, The Straits performed their first concert at the Royal Albert Hall in front of 4,000 Dire Straits fans. The stunning set of greatest hits, including ‘Money for Nothing’, ‘Romeo & Juliet’, ‘Sultans of Swing’, and ‘Tunnel of Love’ went down a storm with the audience. In June they performed at the Cornbury Festival, Oxfordshire to a crowd of 14,000. “I was very sceptical about The Straits before I saw them,” said one fan. “I couldn’t believe that they could be the same without Mark Knopfler. How wrong I was. For me, The Straits were the absolute highlight of the festival. I was moved to tears at almost every track.”

Alan Clark was recently interviewed by Jon Harle on BBC Radio Newcastle about The Straits’ forthcoming October UK tour. If you believe the rumors, it’s a great time to be a Van Halen fan. With Chickenfoot’s new album, Chickenfoot III in stores on September 27th and the rumored David Lee Roth led Van Halen album completed, this fall could be very Van Halen heavy. Add in the Hurtsmile CD from Gary Cherone, who led the extremely underrated VH III, and there’s a whole lot of Van Halen-esque music available for ear consumption. (PS – if you haven’t heard Hurtsmile, you really should check it out).
There’s even a possibility that both Van Halen and Chickenfoot could be on tour at the same time. That idea got me thinking of what the ultimate Van Halen tour would be. While this is high fantasy at its most extreme, I ask you to indulge with me momentarily as we imagine what could be. How amazing would it be if the following actually happened? How much money would you pay to see this fantasy become a reality?
Van Halen on tour with Chickenfoot and Hurtsmile. Now, I know that it’s never going to happen. I know that there is way too much bad blood for this exceptional idea to grow into a completed tour. However, imagine if it did. This is how I would envision the scenario.
Hurtsmile would obviously open the evening. They could perform hits from their debut album and mix in a couple of Extreme classics. Chickenfoot would come out next (sorry Sammy fans, but this is Van Halen’s show all the way) and rip into their performance. Songs from both of their releases, perhaps a little Satriani solo, and maybe even a couple of solo Sammy songs for good measure. Then it would be time for the headliners of the evening – Van Halen. Performing nothing but classics and songs off their latest album, Van Halen would rule the stage. Then Eddie would provide a mind boggling, blistering solo that would wow the crowd like never before. And that would only be the beginning.
After all of that greatness, Eddie and Satriani would step out on stage together for the first “encore”. It would be dueling guitars as they went back and forth. Joe versus Ed. The crowd, if they hadn’t fainted by this point, would be roaring so loud that the roof might cave in.
Then it would be time for “encore” number two. Van Halen back on the stage with Michael Anthony on Bass and Gary Cherone on lead vocals. They could play a song off VH3 (which hasn’t been performed live in 13 years). Next out, would be Sammy to take over the mic. Cue up “Dreams” or some other such beloved Van Hagar song.
And then, the ending of all endings could occur. Diamond Dave would walk out on stage while Sammy, Michael, and Gary are still there. Enter Joe Satriani and Wolfgang, and lead us into the all-star jam to end all all-star jams! Eddie and Joe on lead guitar. Michael and Wolfgang on bass. Alex on drums. Sammy, Dave, and Gary trading versus on some superior classic rock song (probably a Led Zeppelin tune). How amazing would that be?
Now, I ask you honestly, how much would you pay to see that concert? I know that I would pay top dollar and then some. How about you?

Singer and guitarist Phil Humphries from Powerage Records recording artist Lethargy posted the following announcement today:
From Phil to Fans, Friends, Punter, Telly & Gaz.
It is with a seriously heavy heart that I’m announcing my departure from Lethargy. This may come as a shock to you, it’s a shock to me too and still doesn’t feel real even though I informed Punter, Telly & Gaz of my decision nearly a week ago. It’s a decision I’ve struggled with for over half a year so please believe me when I say it’s not been an easy one to make.
I suppose I’d better start with my reason for leaving as when I read these sort of “statements” myself, it’s always the first thing I’m asking in my mind.
Well, I have to set the record straight before any rumours start and say that it’s nothing to do with the musical direction we’ve taken in the last few years, you’ll hear that on the new album and it’s something I’m extremely proud of. Also, I’m glad to say there’s been no falling out between myself and the boys either, I still consider them my best friends and will always love them dearly.
Unfortunately when you’re in a band and you start getting to a certain level in your career, it becomes a lot more than just making great music with great people. I’m not going to go into exact details on why I’m leaving as it’s personal to me and the band but I will say it’s got to do with a lot of the other elements that make up being a band and for me, it’s become unbearable and if I stayed, I’d probably make it that way for everyone else. Like I said before, we’re all still friends, there were no bust ups on tour and nobody’s slept with anyone they shouldn’t have!
I never thought I’d leave Lethargy, it’s the band I started when I was 15 and still at school with Danny, who left the the band in 2005. For a long time I thought that would be the only member change Lethargy would ever see. I’m glad it happened though as I know Danny’s getting on with a whole new life with an excellent partner and great friends, plus I made a new friend in Gaz. If the member change never happened all those years ago, I may still just know Gaz as Punter’s brother to this day. Whoever fills my shoes in Lethargy, I hope they realise how lucky they are and I hope the rest of the boys get to make a new best friend like I did.
I’ve also made some great friends along the way playing with other bands, working with people within the industry and meeting new fans, it would take me forever to name everyone, including our family members and I’m sure you all know who you are – so thank you. Lethargy would never have gotten this far without each and every one of you and I hope you continue to support it’s next installment.
I’ve already said it privately to the band but would like to publicly say I’m gonna miss playing with the boys, they are the best musicians, songwriters and singers that I know which definitely makes leaving that little bit tougher. There’s never gonna be another Andrew Hunt, who can fit stunning melodies over chords that I could never have come up with, who can then stick in the most unconventional key change and make it flow like a river. I’ve had the privilege of watching Marc T. Jones’ voice develop from almost shy to totally unstoppable and it’s been a joy to sing along side him during that and Lethargy is not Lethargy without some the most unique and complimenting bass lines I’ve heard. And last but not least, Gaz is the best drummer in the country, you couldn’t even try to convince me of otherwise and I’ve seen a lot of drummers, no offence to any drummers I know but it’s true. As I’ve already said to you personally boys, I’m thankful that we’ve done so much together and I’m proud to say that I was a part of it – you truely are brothers. I hope I play with all of you again in the future under different circumstances. It’s been an amazing 11 years that will stay with me forever.
Before I go, I’d like to make it clear that I’m not quitting music, if I did that, I’d have nothing to do for the rest of my life. You’ll see me again as soon as it feels right with whatever I do next. I’ll be focusing on what was my side-project, Kilvey and take it from there. I have no idea what the future holds, it feels slightly scary but exciting and all I’m gonna do from this point is look forward.
I’ll see you all again soon.
Please read below for the official band statement:

Stryper frontman and accomplished solo artist Michael Sweet announced his departure from legendary rock band BOSTON today, in order to devote his full attention to his longstanding role as the lead vocalist and lead guitarist for multi-platinum rock outfit Stryper – a band he co-founded in 1983. Sweet joined BOSTON in 2008, sharing lead vocals and playing guitar on a headlining tour of North America, performing the band’s classic hits like “More than a Feeling,” “Peace of Mind,” “Amanda” and “Don’t Look Back.”
Following the BOSTON tour, Stryper released the 2009 studio album “Murder by Pride” (featuring a cover of BOSTON’s “Peace of Mind”), which led to a yearlong world tour with all of the original members. In 2010, Stryper released “The Covering,” and another world tour recently concluded. Stryper is currently in the studio working on an untitled release for 2011, with tour dates already announced for this fall.
“My focus and my loyalty lies with Stryper, the band that I’ve committed almost thirty years of my life to,” says Sweet. “The guys in Stryper are my brothers and I’m excited about our future together. The music of BOSTON helped shape who I am as an artist, and the opportunity to be a part of their musical legacy is overwhelming. It’s been an honor to share the stage with them, and a bigger honor to call them my friends.”
In addition to the increasing demands for Stryper, Sweet has been spending some of his time off the road in Nashville, writing with A-list songwriters such as Blair Daly (Rascal Flatts, Uncle Kracker, Lynyrd Skynyrd), Luke Laird (Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw), Britton Cameron (Steel Magnolia, Lonestar, Eden’s Edge) and others.
“I’ve always loved the writing process and to be able to collaborate with some of the greatest writers in Nashville is an absolutely amazing experience for me,” explains Sweet. “I’m looking forward to many more successful trips to Music City.”
Stryper has sold more than 8 million albums worldwide. The group’s unprecedented 1986 album “To Hell with the Devil” went double-platinum and was named one of the “100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music” by CCM Magazine.

About Drive A:
Sometimes a chance meeting is more than it seems – in the case of Drive A, a random moment ignited a fuse resulting in a incendiary new band. Songs about rebellion, crunchy guitars and killer hooks have their foundation in old school punk and rock n’ roll that the band reveres but their stage presence and delivery is fresh and in the now. With a fan following that is expanding exponentially, it’s clear that the band is onto something. Drive A come roaring into 2011 with their brand new album, The World in Shambles, out on Dead Conflict Records this Spring.
The World in Shambles is the follow up to their debut album Loss of Desire (2009). The critically acclaimed album which featured singles “Are You Blind” and “Can’t Sleep It Off” set the precedent for Drive A’s form of high energy rock n’ roll and provided the soundtrack for their energetic live show. Frontman Bruno Mascolo explains “although we’re still proud of Loss of Desire, we feel we’ve come along way as musicians and songwriters, you can hear that we’ve played about 200 shows since our last record.” The band freely admits that their singular mission upon entering the studio was to craft an album that bottled their firecracker live energy and onstage prowess. They collectively rejected polished, computerized techniques and technologies in favor of beautiful, genuine imperfections, all of which serve to make The World in Shambles that much more authentic.
“We wanted to make something that was raw, and that sounded like our band when we played live,” Bruno Mascolo said. “Songwriting is the essence of the band but playing live is how we truly connect with people, with that in mind we recorded The World in Shambles completely live, there were no click tracks, so what you hear is what we sound like. It was about capturing the energy and not trying to achieve perfection.”
Armed with a killer arsenal of songs, the band decided to drive their message with an image that is uncompromising and disciplined. “Today, it’s all about how you look,” Nott said. “It’s like ‘This is a metal band’ or ‘This is a rock band. People get so obsessed with what genre a band is a part of that they forget to even listen to the music. We got sick of wearing other band’s shirts on stage because people started labeling us as part of that scene. We want people to care about our music, not about what bands we like. With the new album came the new image. We wear patches with our logo and we have another patch for a character on the album, called ‘The Marked Man.'”
“He is the underdog, the guy who dwells on his problems until eventually he creates a target on himself. We have all gone through that,” Mascolo concurred. “We wear the uniforms on stage because it puts every thing on the music but we aren’t wearing meaningless patches, they hint at the message behind the band.”
The band’s logo is their take on the anarchy flag, but instead of paying lip service to the concept without ever doing anything to bring about change, Drive A hope to actually incite listeners to action. Mascolo said, “We’re not going to say ‘Fuck the government’ on stage. We want to encourage fans who are living a one-sided life, who go to school, college and then get a job and wonder if that’s it, to go after their dreams.”
On The World in Shambles the band wanted to shake up their comfort zone, so instead of working with longtime friend Dennis Hill (producer of Drive A’s 2009 debut Loss of Desire) the band recorded the album in two parts. The first session was recorded on analog equipment to tape at 1974 Studios in Silver Lake with Dave Cobb and the second session took place at Sunset Sound with Julian Raymond. Despite the band’s “Fuck You” attitude towards concepts like conformity and fitting in with a “scene,” Mascolo mentions that a current of positive energy courses through the album’s veins. “There is a positive message at the end of every song,” he admitted. “The idea of singing about a negative subject can sometimes be therapeutic, but most of the time it becomes cliché and loses the original meaning.” “Revolt!” is about Mascolo’s travels abroad, specifically in Europe, last summer. “It seemed more like a community over there,” the singer mused. “There is a real lack of community here, people are just so about themselves, but it’s not like that overseas.” The title track “Let’s Have a Wreck” is another personal song that lays its cards face up on the table. Mascolo revealed that the song is about “having an addiction to destroying situations or relationships,” a construct that all of Drive A’s fans are able to connect with.
The California quartet formed after singer/guitarist Bruno Mascolo and guitarist Jason Nott ran into each other one night outside of Hollywood’s Troubadour in 2006. Bassist Taylor Knowles joined the band after seeing them open for Set Your Goals in Orlando. He became a fan based on their live performance and when the bass player position opened, he got in touch through the wonders of social networking and secured his slot in the rhythm section.
Drive A has steadily built a following of fans by touring with the likes of Alkaline Trio, The Used, Atreyu, Bullet For My Valentine and Escape the Fate over the past two years. It’s the band’s onstage power that has attracted an alliance of kids that continue to multiply with every tour. Nott summed up the band’s relationship with their fans and the crowds, saying, “We’re a breath of fresh air for them. We’re only a couple years older than the kids listening and they can relate.”
Drive A’s hungry guitar snarl meshes with power chords that take up residence in your head for weeks at a time and surprisingly mature songwriting that reveals equal parts pathos and animosity towards the status quo. The World in Shambles is proof that Drive A are well on their way.

Former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord has posted the following message on his website today:
“I would like all my friends, followers, fans and fellow travelers to know that I am fighting cancer and will therefore be taking a break from performing while getting the treatment and cure. I shall of course be continuing to write music – in my world it just has to be part of the therapy – and I fully expect to be back in good shape next year.
God bless and see you soon, Jon.”
Lord’s webmaster states: “May we also, at Jon’s request, ask if everyone could please respect his need for privacy so that he can spend time with his family (and his music). Thank you.”
Century Media and its associated labels “InsideOutMusic”, “Superballmusic”, “Ain’t no Grave Records”, “Hollywood Waste” and “People Like You” have decided to pull their repertoire from Spotify in an attempt to protect the interests of their artists.
While everyone at the label group believes in the ever changing possibilities of new technology and new ways of bringing music to the fans, Century Media is also of the opinion that Spotify in its present shape and form isn’t the way forward. The income streams to the artists are affected massively and therefore that accelerates the downward spiral, which eventually will lead to artists not being able to record music the way it should be recorded. Ultimately, in some cases, it will completely kill a lot of smaller bands that are already struggling to make ends meet.
At the same time Century Media also believes that Spotify is a great tool to discover new music and is in the process of reintroducing their bands to Spotify by way of putting up samplers of the artists. This way, fans can still discover the great music released by the label.
Physical sales are dropping drastically in all countries where Spotify is active. Artists are depending on their income from selling music and it is our job to support them to do so. Since the artists need to sell their music to continue their creativity, Spotify is a problem for them. This is about survival, nothing less and it is time that fans and consumers realize that for artists it is essential to sell music to keep their heads above water.
Obviously it is ultimately up to the music fan and consumer, how they access their music, whether it is buying, streaming or stealing. There needs to be awareness though, that how you will consume your music has direct consequences for the artists, who we are all trying to support.
A lyric video is now available for the remixed version of Breaking Benjamin’s “Blow Me Away,” the lead track from the upcoming greatest hits collection titled Shallow Bay: The Best of Breaking Benjamin. The song features vocals from Syd Duran of the band Valora and is available for fans on iTunes now. The song will be part of a two disc collection of Breaking Benjamin’s chart-topping hits including “Breath,” So Cold,” “I Will Not Bow,” and more. The release will also feature an entire second disc of rare recordings, never-before-released songs, live performances, rare acoustic recordings and remixes. Look for Shallow Bay: The Best of Breaking Benjamin in stores and online August 16th, 2011.
Don’t judge a CD by its cover. Lets face it, the CD cover for Manraze’s sophomore effort, PunkFunkRootsRock is pretty darn ugly. Don’t let the ugly cover stop you for checking this CD out, as the music is good…..damn good in fact.
I have been looking forward to this CD, ever since Phil Collen told Hard Hock Hideout about it back in May. I liked Manraze’s debut Surreal a lot, so picking this one up was a no brainer for this hard rock fan. I can gladly say, this is no sophomore slump for Manraze. PunkFunkRootsRock is every bit as good as its predecessor, if not better.
The album starts off with a very Def Leppard like tune “Over My Dead Body”. This is a great song, and an instant hit in my opinion.
“I C U in Everything” also has a Def Leppard like feel, but Phil sings in a lower register that reminds me of (dare I say) Marilyn Manson. He doesn’t sing this way for the whole song, and I think it gives the tune a very cool vibe.
“All I Wanna Do” has a cool 70’s like feel to it. This pop/rock tune is pretty darn catchy.
The CD takes an unexpected reggae-like twist with the song “Closer To Me “. I like reggae every now and then, and I must admit that I like “Closer To Me ” quite a bit. You wouldn’t think a song like this would work on a CD like this, but it does.
“Lies” is a another great rocker. This is an infectious tune that sounds great cranked at maximum volume.
When I first read that Manraze was covering Jimi Hendrix, I was fearful that this cover might blow. Hendrix is such a hard act to cover. Few bands have pulled it off very well. Needless to say, Manraze knocked their cover of “Fire” out of the park. This is an extremely cool version of this song. I love it!
Phil Collen shows that he has plenty of rock left in him with the song, “I, Superbiker”. Hearing a song like this, gives me hope that Def Leppard can one day return to its hard rockin’ roots. Phil shreds on this track. This is killer stuff!!
If Phil Collen, Simon Laffy and Paul Cook keep making CD’s like this, they are going to be in high demand as a live act. This is really good stuff, and there isn’t a bad song in the bunch.
If you liked the first Manraze album, Surreal, then you should definitely check out PunkFunkRootsRock. I think you will enjoy it.
