Hard Rock Hideout celebrated its fifth anniversary this week. Considering that the average life span of a rock music blog/website is just over 2 years, this is an amazing feat. For the last five years, Hard Rock Hideout has been providing the greatest news, reviews, and information on all of our favorite hard rocking bands, as well as presenting plenty of information on fresh new bands that deserve some attention. I would like to dedicate this edition of Vie’s Verses to what I feel is the greatest hard rock site on the web – Hard Rock Hideout – with a look back into the hard rocking year 2006, the year that HRH launched.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born 250 years prior. One of the greatest composers the world has ever known, and clearly a predecessor (albeit centuries early) to rock and roll, there was a memorable celebration for the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth.
ITunes celebrated 2006 in style, capturing their one billionth download. That’s 1,000,000,000 songs that were downloaded through ITunes. I would call that a most successful venture. It would be nice to know how many of those downloads were heavy metal songs. I wonder if there is a statistical breakdown by category somewhere.
U2 cleaned up at the Grammy Awards behind How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. The band took home five Grammy awards that evening, including album of the year and song of the year.
MTV celebrated their 25th anniversary. That harkened back to the days when MTV actually showed music videos. Many of my favorite metal bands were discovered through MTV, specifically Headbanger’s Ball, which I watched religiously throughout high school. Every Saturday night at 11 you could find me glued to the tube waiting to discover the next great metal band.
We lost two great musicians in 2006. Both Pink Floyd’s original lead singer Syd Barrett and the Godfather of soul, James Brown, passed away that year. Both of these legends are still missed.
The hit British music show, Top Of The Pops, which featured some great metal artists such as AC/DC, Iron Maiden, and Faith No More, aired their final episode. The show ran for 42 years (1964 until 2006), one of the longest running music programs in television history.
Some great hard rock bands formed in 2006, including Hell Yeah (Vinnie Paul’s latest band) and rookie sensation Cage The Elephant. Other great hard rock bands decided that it was time to quit the scene, including Cold (most notable for their big hit “Stupid Girl”) and System Of A Down. Cold would reunite in 2008, System Of A Down in 2011.
There were also some great comebacks/reformations that year. Alice In Chains returned the scene with a brand new singer and high hopes. Josh Todd and Keith Nelson reformed Buckcherry (with a brand new supporting cast) and released one of the band’s strongest albums ever in 15. The song “Crazy Bitch” tour up the charts and put Buckcherry back on the hard rock map. Everclear sans everyone except lead singer/guitarist Art Alexakis reformed and released Welcome To The Drama Club.
What other great albums were released in 2006? Papa Roach unleashed their best album ever in The Paramour Sessions. Pearl Jam put out their self titled album, one of the band’s best efforts since the early days of Pearl Jam. Audioslave unleashed their final disc in Revelations. Chris Cornell would go on to reform Soundgarden while the remaining members would put Rage Against The Machine back together. Paul Stanley released his first official solo album, Live To Win. Heavy metal legends Iron Maiden blessed us with A Matter Of Life And Death which would debut at #9 on the Billboard Top 100 in the U.S. The band celebrated their first top ten record by performing the album in its entirety during their 2006 world tour. Fan reactions to that decision were mixed. The Red Hot Chili Peppers released Stadium Arcadium, which would go on to sell 7.9 Million units.
Some notable debut albums were also released that year. Black Stone Cherry put out their self titled debut, which still sounds amazing to this day. And one of my all time favorite records was released. The Red Jumpsuit Aparatus came out with their debut record Don’t You Fake It. This is an album that renewed my faith in both rock music and modern rock bands.
2006 was a great year for music and for music fans. A lot of grand things took place that year, but nothing was grander than the debut of a little rock website known as Hard Rock Hideout. To Rob Rockitt I say “Thank You.” For the last five years you have put out a must read site that I visit daily. I would be hard pressed to find another hard rock site that compares. I hope there are many more years to come.

Dario Mollo & Tony Martin resurrect The Cage with the release of the long awaited third album in January !
Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of the long awaited MOLLO MARTIN new album entitled “The Third Cage” on January 20th 2012 in Europe and January 24th in North America.
Dario Mollo and Tony Martin first got together when the Italian guitar player/produced and composer needed the right singer after the put together a new set of songs in the late 90’s. The former Black Sabbath singer came about on a suggestion from producer Kit Woolven (UFO, Thin Lizzy) with whom Dario Mollo had been working during his Crossbones years. Tony Martin wrote lyrics and melodies for the amazing tracks that Dario had already assembled, and thus The Cage was born.
The first album, released independently in 1999, gained a great success among the Hard Rock fans and the critics and Dario started finally to make himself a reputation over the international markets. This debut was later followed by an equally acclaimed second album in 2002.
Mollo has been very busy since then, releasing one more album with the Voodoo Hill project with Glenn Hughes. He then toured Europe with Graham Bonnet and Don Airey. After Don became a permanent Deep Purple member, Dario and Graham Bonnet put up Elektric Zoo, touring Europe again, performing songs from Rainbow, Alcatrazz, Voodoo Hill and The Cage. In 2008 Dario released an album with the more alt-rock Italian band Noize Machine, before getting again to work on a new set of Hard Rocking songs for a new record with Tony Martin.
“As usual we are 50/50 partners”, explains Mollo. “I write all the music and Tony then contributes with the melodies and lyrics. We also try together different structures of the tracks and we rearrange them to better fit the vocal parts. Then I go ahead and take care of the entire production of the album, tracking, mixing and mastering”.
The songwriting, the sound and the video production of this new project are absolutely stunning and show the great skills that Mollo has developed in the past few years. All Hard Rock lovers should simply not miss this record which bravely melts several influences in a cutting edge release. “There are much better songs, performances and production on this album, plus we will finally bring this project live out there: we have a lot of great songs to perform to our loyal fans, we look forward to meet them” concludes Dario Mollo.
“The Third Cage” will include the following tracks: Wicked World; Cirque Du Freak; Oh My Soul; One Of The Few; Still In Love With You; Can’t Stay Here; Wardance; Don’t Know What It Is About You; Blind Fury; Violet Moon; Wicked World (Videoclip).
The first single / video “Wicked World” can be streamed in full on the Frontiers Records webradio www.frontiers.it/webradio.
When thinking back to HRH’s humble beginning in 2006, one metal band stood taller than them all, and that was Iron Maiden. Their album A Matter of Life & Death still stands as one of the band’s best releases.
Check out the two video clips released in support of the album, “Different World” and “A Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg” below!
Canada’s über successful rock band, Nickelback is back with their seventh album, Here and Now. With two great albums back to back in All The Right Reasons and Dark Horse, Nickelback is making it harder and harder on themselves to top their previous works.
When I first heard the single “When We Stand Together”, I thought it was a pretty cool tune, but I was kind of fearful, that Here and Now may be a little more on the mellow side. As it turns out, the album is pretty well-balanced with some heavy rockers, and a few mellow numbers. The album is a little on the short side, as it clocks in just shy of 40 minutes.
The album starts off right with an excellent heavy rocker “This Means War”. This is easily one of the best songs on Here and Now. “Bottoms Up” on the other hand, didn’t really do anything for me. This party anthem is a little too grungy for my taste.
“Midnight Queen” is a crunchy up tempo rocker that does not disappoint. This catchy tune might be one of my all time favorite Nickelback tunes.
You won’t need too many guesses to know what the song “Gotta Get Me Some” is about. This sleazy number has some cool riffs, but I don’t care for this song very much.
“Lullaby” starts off with a keyboard sound that is more akin to U2 than Nickelback. This mellow tune will likely get tons of plays on the radio, but it isn’t my cup of tea.
“Kiss It Goodbye” is another rocker that didn’t really excite me very much. It is just an o.k. tune that is a little too grungy in my opinion.
“Trying Not To Love You” is another slower tune, but unlike “Lullaby”, this one is pretty good. I like this one a lot better, and I think it has “hit” written all over it. “Holding On To Heaven” is a low to mid tempo number that is growing on me after multiple plays. This song could be a possible sleeper hit for Nickelback.
Here and Now desperately needed a cool rocker at this stage of the game. “Everything I Wanna Do” is a mid tempo tune that has some big riffs, but just falls flat.
I was hopeful that the album close out strong, and while the song “Don’t Ever Let it End” is a good tune, I was hoping for a little more.
Does Here and Now surpass Dark Horse or All The Right Reasons? No, not by a longshot. It is definitely above average, and is a CD most Nickelback fans will enjoy. You can purchase Here and Now at this link.

In 2006, that little band featuring Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Mikkey Dee, aka Motörhead released their eighteenth studio album, Kiss of Death.
The band released one video in support of the album. The video clip, “Be My Baby” is pretty damn cool in my opinion.

Halcyon (hal-see-uh’n) – adj. – calm, peaceful, tranquil
Imagine that Cookie Monster meets hair metal and they fall in love. The offspring of their nuptials would be Halcyon Way, an exceptional progressive/doom/glam metal band that is offering their latest round of intense music for the masses in the form of Indoctrination. Halcyon Way blends doom metal, progressive metal, and 80s metal in perfect harmony for the greater good of music. The vocals of lead singer, Steve Braun are the perfect contrast to the gravelly rock voice of death vocalist, Kris Maltenieks, and it is noticed immediately on the opening track, “On Black Wings.” The end result of that serene mix is some exceptional music.
Part doom metal, part progressive metal, all heavy metal – Halcyon Way has released a strong album in Indoctrination. Even though several songs contain cookie monster vocals, Braun’s high notes make the songs fresh and enjoyable. Fortunately, Braun is the dominate voice on this album. However, the direction that Halcyon Way took to sprinkle in the death vocals makes the two contrasting voices work well together. It’s like enjoying a good plate of sweet and spicy wings. Most of the journey is an enjoyable savory taste, and every now and then the bitters are thrown in to snap the senses to life and make the listener aware.
The songs on Indoctrination are layered with multiple levels of musical genius. Each song was painstakingly crafted with numerous changes and arrangements to provide the most ear enjoyment possible for the fan. It is truly an honor to hear such art in the finished format. Phenomenal guitar work overlaying both angelic and devilishly gruff vocals mixed in with one of the best drummers in rock and roll (Ernie Topran) make Indoctrination an album worth owning. Although ripe with double bass throughout most of the record, Topran makes enough changes and spectacular rhythms to prove that he is in the elite of the drumming world.
Indoctrination is metal at its finest. If you prefer your rock dark and heavy with a touch of glam, you will love Indoctrination by Halcyon Way. To learn more about the band or to order a copy of Indoctrination, visit www.halcyonway.com.

From Rolling Stone.com:
Van Halen has signed to Interscope Records, a source with knowledge of the talks tells Rolling Stone. The news was first reported by the Hollywood Reporter, which wrote that Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine was personally involved with the negotiations, and quoted an “insider” as saying, “He heard the band was available and wanted to work with them. It was decided at the eleventh hour.” The deal reportedly includes touring, merchandising, marketing and recording.
Rumors were swirling a few months ago that the band was going to sign with Columbia, but supposedly Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth didn’t want to sign with a label on the East Coast. “He was never on board [with Columbia],” the Hollywood Reporter’s source said. “It was as complicated as anyone would imagine, when one side says black, the other says white. The label was pretty skeptical that things would work out.”
Van Halen haven’t released an album of new material since 1998’s ill-fated Van Halen III, which featured Extreme’s Gary Cherone on vocals. They reunited with Sammy Hagar in 2004 for a tour, but shortly afterwards parted ways with the Red Rocker and founding bassist Michael Anthony. They toured in 2007 and 2008 with David Lee Roth and Eddie’s son teenage son Wolfgang Van Halen on bass. There have been numerous reports that the band was recording a new album over the past few years. It will be their first record with David Lee Roth since 1984.

What songs/videos defined 2006? When I started looking back at the humble beginnings of Hard Rock Hideout, one band kept coming to mind, and that was Black Stone Cherry. BSC released their self titled debut in 2006, and their first video “Lonely Train” was a real eye opener. With so many new bands trying to sound like the next Nickelback, Black Stone Cherry stepped out of the shadows to put out a killer CD that still gets a lot of play by this listener to this day.

Germany’s Heavy Metal finest PRIMAL FEAR to release their anticipated ninth studion album “Unbreakable”
Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of Primal Fear new studio album entitled “Unbreakable” on January 20th 2012 in Europe and January 24th in North America.
After a sensational tour through South America in spring 2011, more dates in Europe plus an outstanding appearance on the 2011 edition of the Wacken Open Air, the band was fired up to enter the recording studio to start tracking their ninth studio album. The target was crystal clear – producer & bassist Mat Sinner: “After touring for two years without breaks, the guys realized the fan favourites very well and we wrote an untamed, powerful and crushing album together”.
“Unbreakable” combines the skills of the strongest Primal Fear line-up ever, with a well-balanced “back to the roots” vibe and an ambitious learning process during their longest tour so far. Classic and ultra-fresh Primal Fear riff-rockers like “Strike”, “Give Em Hell” or the high speed track “And There Was Silence” will hit the bulls-eye, like the rhythm paced metal anthem, first single and new video clip “Bad Guys Wear Black”. Less experiments, more rock! But there will be a nine-minute epic journey with a lot prog approach named “Where Angels Die”, a classic wonderful ballad “Born Again” and the melodic power bomb “Metal Nation”. Singer Ralf Scheepers adds: “the plan was to record an album for the fans with rough metal riffs, screaming vocals and good melodies …… and finally it became a monster – a tough ‘bang-your-head’ metal album called “Unbreakable”.
Magnus Karlsson and Alex Beyrodt are worldwide respected guitarists – together they are unbeatable! Ralf Scheepers vocal performance shines bright on a new level on all new songs. And what can go wrong if you’re backed by one of the best rhythm sections in metal with Randy Black and Mat Sinner? Plus backing vocals by the “Fantastic Four”: Ralf Scheepers, Mat Sinner, Erik Martensson and Oliver Hartmann. You can hear the result on Primal Fears new statement called “Unbreakable”!
“Unbreakable” was produced by Mat Sinner, engineered and mixed by Achim Koehler & the House Of Music studios and some more studios in Germany & Sweden between summer and autumn 2011 and will include the following tracks: Unbreakable (Part1); Strike; Give ‘Em Hell; Bad Guys Wear Black; And There Was Silence; Metal Nation; Where Angels Die; Unbreakable (Part 2); Marching Again; Born Again; Blaze Of Glory; Conviction; Night Of The Jumps (Bonus Track)*; Bad Guys Wear Black (Video)*
* Only available in the first pressing in digipak
“Unbreakable” will be anticipated by the digital only release of the single “Bad Guys Wear Black” which will be available for download and streaming on December 5th 2011. The single will also include “Metal Nation” in an exclusive single mix.
Don’t miss the German Metal Commando when they’re coming to your town!

The new Ozzy Osbourne rockumentary God Bless Ozzy hits stores tomorrow!
Typically I am not a big fan of bio pictures, but this DVD is interesting from beginning to end. Ozzy’s son, Jack Osbourne is the producer of this movie, and worked on it for over three years before releasing. Jack has put together a terrific, unbiased film that most Ozzy Osbourne fans will want to watch. If you are familiar with Ozzy’s history, the movie might feel like a bit of a rehash of Ozzy’s life, but the interviews, behind the scene photographs and excerpts make this film really stand out.
The documentary has a ton of guest appearances, including Sir Paul McCartney, Tommy Lee, Robert Trujillo and more. There is some rare footage of Randy Rhoads that you won’t see anywhere else.
The Osbourne TV show painted Ozzy as the clown prince of rock n’ roll. If you want to know and learn about the real Ozzy, this is the film that you need to see. I enjoyed God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, and I think you will too.
You can purchase a copy of the movie at this link.

Russ Dwarf (of the Killer Dwarfs) appears on the current episode of the Decibel Geek Podcast. Topics of discussion for this audio interview include the recollection of Killer Dwarfs sharing a studio with KISS, touring with (and pranking) Iron Maiden in England, and the show from Hell in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Russ also shares his thoughts on today’s musical climate, the demystification of rock stars due to the youtube boom, and the major impact that Alice Cooper had on his performance and sense of humor. Decibel Geek Podcast host Chris Czynszak stated, “Russ was a true pleasure to talk to. Co-host Aaron Camaro and I were immediately disarmed by his down-to-earth nature and willingness to bring his true feelings forth. His honesty combined with a well of experiences made for a very entertaining and thought-provoking conversation. We look forward to having him on the show again in the future.”

Lee Small hails from the West Midlands in the U.K, a place that has brought a wealth of talent in rock music & heavy metal gentry, such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Robert Plant, Magnum, John Bonham, Slade, Mel & Tom Galley & the voice of rock, Glenn Hughes to name just a few.
Lee started out originally as a bass player in bands at just the age of 14 years and was playing the midlands pub scene at 15. He took up guitar in 1986 and became a vocalist fronting a band for the first time 3 years later, then, quite by accident as the band he was playing in at the time kept losing the vocalist, they all decided to have a go at singing and he ended up getting the job!!
Since then, Lee has been quietly climbing the ladder to success. In the 1990’s Lee fronted UK Melodic Rockers “Pride” and had the opportunity to tour with up and coming bands at the time such as Winger, Skin and Thunder. In the late 90’s he formed Native Cain with ex-Pride members and released the album “Primitive Soul” with them in 1998. During 2000 he has been involved with Rock legends “Budgie” and Eric Bell’s “Thin Lizzy”. It was not long before Escape Music recognized his vocal talent and Lee features on Escape Music releases Surveillance (“Angelstation” ESM132) and Cloven Hoof (“Eye of the Sun” ESM133), not forgetting Tom Galley’s Psychofantasy project ESM125 where Lee sang alongside such people as Tony Martin, Keith Murrell and Glenn Hughes.
More recently Lee took to the mike stand for legendary UK melodic rockers SHY (ESM232), and has helped create a marvellous piece of music which has received reviews of epic proportions. Lee Small is a name at the forefront of the rock scene at present and what a time to unleash his very own solo outing, an album which is full of surprises. Lee has given us a bluesy rock album that features contributions from Martin Kronlund (Gypsy Rose), Imre Daun (Don Patrol, Gypsy Rose) and Paul Bradder (Saracen). This is Lee at his finest, and this solo outing will see him take his talent to new heights.

Metal Evolution is an 11-episode docu-series produced by Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn of Banger Films and is based on the groundbreaking Heavy Metal Family Tree. The Heavy Metal Family Tree is a 26 sub-genre genealogical chart which reveals the vast complex progeny of heavy metal – from Early Metal and Shock Rock to Thrash, from Progressive Metal to Grunge and Nu Metal. Using the chart as his road map, host/producer and metal head turned anthropologist Dunn, crisscrosses the globe exploring the vast history of heavy metal across its 40+ year history and beyond. 01. Where We Belong
02. Zero To Rage
03. Jester’s Laughter
04. This Is Our Victory
05. Fear Hotel
06. Hail The Brave
08. Last Man Fighting
09. Empire Of Fear
11. Voice Inside My Head
12. Cuchulainn’s Story
The song “Jester’s Laughter” is available for streaming below!
Formed in 2005 in Belfast by vocalist Harv, STORMZONE recorded its debut album soon after and secured a deal with U.K. rock label Escape Music who released “Caught In The Act” in 2007 (also released by Avalon/Marquee in Japan in the same year). The LP was a superb hard rock record was also essentially a “studio” band album with Harv and friends playing all instruments. The cover artwork for “Caught In The Act” was painted by famous fantasy artist Rodney Matthews. Rodney has also contributed the artwork for the new STORMZONE album “Death Dealer”.
It was not until later in 2007 that the full STORMZONE lineup was formed, essentially to tour in promotion of the debut album with all the musicians being from Belfast. Most had previously played in local bands except drummer Davy Bates. He was the sticks-man for legendary Belfast band SWEET SAVAGE (immortalized when METALLICA covered their “Killing Time” opus as the B-side of “The Unforgiven”).
For two years STORMZONE were on the road playing in Europe, including support slots with Y&T, WHITE LION, TESLA, GEORGE LYNCH, and L.A. GUNS. They also made appearances at various festivals, such as Firefest (UK), Sweden Rock, Lorca Rock (Spain), Z Rock (UK) and Raismesfest (France), before re-entering the studio in the summer of 2009 to record their second album.
STORMZONE attracted many friends with the debut album including admiration from legendary producer/DJ Neal Kay who saw in the band the same early signs of stardom shown by another group he discovered, IRON MAIDEN! With the band playing live constantly they inevitably hardened up their sound so the new recordings came out much more aggressive than the first album but still kept the quality, melody and harmony of before. Co-produced by Neal Kay, “Death Dealer” was finished towards the end of 2009 and released in April 2010.

25 years after the release of the legendary “Night Of Passion” album, german hard rock band MAD MAX return with the original line-up and will release their new studio album “Another Night Of Passion” by the end of March 2012.
Michael Voss (Lead Vocals, Lead Guitars), Jürgen Breforth (Rhythm Guitars), Roland Bergmann (Bass, Vocals) and Axel Kruse (Drums) captured the spirit of 1987 and deliver their masterpiece worldwide through SPV / Steamhammer.
The album was recorded at the Kidroom-Studios which are owned by Michael Voss and where also albums from Michael Schenker, Vengeance and Gary Barden were produced.
The cover artwork was designed by the belgian artist Eric Philippe (Rhapsody, TNT) and the photos were shot by the famous german based photographer Martin Huch (Duesenberg Guitars).
Olly Hahn (A&R Steamhammer): “I saw the band back in 1987 where they supported Stryper and they blew me away. “Night Of Passion” is a hard rock gem and I´m sure that also “Another Night Of Passion” will not disappoint any fan who likes classic melodic hard rock.”
Jürgen Breforth (Guitarist Mad Max): “Exactly 27 years ago we were close to sign a deal with SPV/Steamhammer and I´m totally glad that we could fix this now in 2011. With SPV on our side, the new studio album and the original line-up we are ready to burn the stage again!”
And the band will prove that in April/May 2012 because they are confirmed as the special guest on the

MAD MAX released 9 studio albums since 1982 and toured through whole Europe with bands like Uriah Heep, Stryper, Yngwie Malmsteen and Pretty Maids. Highlight of their career was the special guest slot on the sold out Deep Purple/Alice Cooper tour in 2006. They also played on many festivals for example two times at the prestigious “Rocklahoma Festival” in the USA as well as on the “Rock Of Ages Festival” and “Wacken Open Air” in Germany.
Any time a new album is released that causes fists to fly in the crisp night air, legs to pump at Olympic athletic speed, and rock screams to unleash in howling yowls, it has to be grand. Megadeth’s latest album Th1rt3en is exactly that. Once again, Dave Mustaine and company came to the party and showed all the other so-called metal bands how heavy metal is meant to played. It’s just one of the many reasons why Megadeth is as high in the hard rocking ranks as bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, and WASP.
Th1rt3en is an amazing collection of blistering metal songs for those who love to bang their heads, or just feel the energy that heavy metal music brings. With bassist Dave Ellefson providing a signature classic sound to the bass lines, Megadeth has taken their music creation to the next level. Galloping bass lines dominate Thirt3en and provide a steady backdrop along with Shawn Drover’s incredible drums, keeping the rhythm section sturdy.
Overlaying the phenomenal combination of bass and drums is some stellar guitar work by both Dave Mustaine and Chris Broderick. Broderick and Mustaine not only remind us what guitar solos are, they also remind us why we love them so much. Songs like “New World Order” and “Fast Lane” feature blazing solos that scream magnificence. It would be pure pleasure to see these amazing solos performed in concert. The wizardry that Mustaine and Broderick highlight in their effective finger picking mastery is nothing short of astonishing. If every guitarist focused this much time and effort into their song crafting, the metal world would be a much better place.
What’s most interesting about Megadeth’s Th1rt3en is how the second half of the album is so much greater than the first. Upon spinning the first five songs of the record, I was worried that we had a dud on our hands. It’s not that the opening five tracks are horrible (except maybe “Guns, Drugs, & Money” – which is a bad song), but they aren’t up to the excellence that comes later. The beginning of the album had me concerned. Fortunately, Megadeth showed that they still know how to rock like no one else’s business beginning with the sixth cut of the record, “Never Dead.”
Themes of fast, muscle cars tearing down the highway, women destroying the well made niche of man, and the over-involvement of government in the daily life of citizens all run rampant throughout the record. Constructed as only the genius of Megadeth could, the band has compiled lyrics on topics that make the listener think and perhaps want to learn a little bit more about their country and their place in politics. If that wasn’t enough for the average fan, the band threw in some songs about hot babes and slick driving machines. All walks of life are covered and all parties get to go home happy.
Thirt3en is one of Megadeth’s strongest albums to date. At this stage of their career, the band could have phoned it in, released a record of re-recorded material, or decided to try some experimental path, but they didn’t. They instead decided to focus and produce an album worthy of the fans and the band’s moniker. Make no mistake about it— Th1rt3en is a lucky number if you are a Megadeth fan.

Formed in Borlänge in 2002, accomplished the all but accomplishable: delighting Power Metal fans and traditionalists alike. Simultaneously, the sound’s unmistakable kinship to Dio-fronted Rainbow and Dio/Martin-fronted Black Sabbath earned ASTRAL DOORS momentum with old-school metalheads who frowned at the perceived blandness and lack of substance in the Power Metal genre.
The debut “Of the Son and the Father” arrived in 2003 to immense critical fanfare, although the crucified priests on the cover succumbed to censorship in Japan where the album was also rechristened (!) “Cloudbreaker”. In the following years, ASTRAL DOORS shrewdly made it impossible for the audience to forget them by bombarding said audience with new releases, one more breathtaking than the other: “Evil Is Forever” (2005), “Raiders of the Ark EP” (2005) and “Astralism” (2006). The band also performed at the perennial Wacken and Sweden Rock Festivals, and did tours with Grave Digger and Blind Guardian – the latter with particular suc-cess.
Sadly, the delightfully Power Metal-laden “New Revelation” (2007) did not lead to ASTRAL DOORS expected big break. The album met with rave reviews, but the band somewhat prematurely ventured their own headline tour, preaching to a still comparatively small choir. Album sales were satisfactory but hardly overwhelming. “Requiem of Time” in January 2010 – introducing new bassist Ulf Lagerström – saw the band gracefully back on track.
ASTRAL DOORS upcoming album, “Jerusalem”, shows the band at its very, very best. With world famous producer Daniel Bergstrand behind the mixing board, their classic rock/heavy metal is brought to new dimensions. “Jerusalem” is by far the best album so far from ASTRAL DOORS and the concept of the lyrics is darker, more political and more provocative than ever before in the history of the band.
The amazing cover artwork has once again been done by Mattias Eriksson who also did “Of the Son and the Father” and “Testament of Rock”.
