The first thing I noticed is that record seems to be a little bit heavier than the last couple of HIM releases.
On the opening track Venus Doom singer Ville Vallo sings in a much lower range than I am used to. The sound on this song reminds me of Type O Negative with a dash of Black Sabbath.
I actually like Love in Cold Blood a little better than Venus Doom. Valle goes back and forth between his normal vocal range, and the deeper bass parts on this song. The guitar work by Mikko “Linde” Lindström is excellent on this track.
Passion’s Killing Floor is another song has a little bit of a doom metal type of feel. The keyboards on this song by Janne “Burton” Puurtinen gives song a haunting almost eerie feel. Cool Stuff.
Kiss of Dawn is one of the more mainstream sounding tracks on Venus Doom. It is also one of my favorites off of this record. Check out the video below for this song.
Sleepwalking Past Hope is a song that you have to hear to fully appreciate. This song clocks in at over 10 minutes in length. The song has more stoner rock elements, but the keyboards turns this song into something completely different.
Dead Lovers’ Lane is a song that could easily be a radio hit for the band. The chugging guitar riffs really drive this song home. Hopefully rock radio won’t be scared off by the layer of keyboards on this track. I think it is totally cool.
Song or Suicide is a short little throw away track, that is only a little over a minute long.
Bleed Well is the third song on Venus Doom with major hit potential. The snippet below gives you a taste of this great song.
Cyanide Sun is a low tempo, moody sounding number. It is a very strong track, and a good way to close out this record.
Bottom line, Venus Doom is one cool sounding record. Although their are some elements that remind me of other bands that I listen to, Venus Doom is a unique sounding record. It debuted at #12 on the Billboard Top 200 charts with 38,637 units sold. I expect that this record could give HIM, their first platinum record with a little bit of luck. If you like the songs in the videos above, go get this!

3. Passion’s Killing Floor
4. Kiss of Dawn

Here is the clean video version of their song Baby Baby Baby.
Atreyu have been hard at work supporting the release of their new album, Lead Sails Paper Anchor. The first single off the album, “Becoming The Bull,” broke into the top 10 at Active Rock radio this week and hopes to buck it’s way up to the top spot. The band’s headline tour is coming to an end and they will get a much needed break. During the down time from the road, Drummer/singer, Brandon Saller will use that time to get married.
For all of the Atreyu fans that always wanted to shred like Dan and Travis, you will get your chance with Guitar Hero 3. “Ex’s and Oh’s” has been selected to be one of the additional tracks that will be available for download.
This CD is a cover album of sorts. Leslie West and company have chosen to take on the tunes of Bob Dylan for this record.
You love or hate for this record will likely stem from whether you like Bob Dylan or not. Personally, I have not been a Bob Dylan fan, so I found this record a little more palatable than some. I am not familiar with a lot of Bob Dylan’s songs, so for me, I am hearing these songs for the first time as presented by Mountain.
I like Leslie West’s raspy vocals, and I always enjoy good bluesy hard rock. I don’t know if Mountain does an adequate job on the cover tunes or not, but I like what I hear on this disc well enough to spin this a few times.
On this album, you get a guest appearance by Ozzy Osbourne on the track Masters of War. I am sure this was a trade off for Leslie’s appearance on Ozzy’s Undercover disc. Nonetheless, I enjoy hearing Ozzy here.
Masters of War is a bluesy guitar riff filled disc that I enjoyed to a lesser degree. Is this the best collection of Mountain tunes that I have ever heard? No, but it is a solid effort from Mr. West and company.
This is a disc that will mix well with some of the other southern hard rock discs that I enjoy. Masters of War won’t blow your mind, but if you are a fan of the band, it is certainly worth seeking out.

Frontiers Records is truly excited to announce the signing of DANGER DANGER for the release of a brand new studio album during 2008!
Formed in 1987 by Bruno Ravel and Steve West, and rounded out by Ted Poley, Andy Timmons and Kasey Smith, it didn’t take long for the band to be noticed by Epic Records’ Lennie Petze, the guy who had earlier discovered Boston, Cyndi Lauper and Aldo Nova, to name a few. Released in 1989, the self-titled release struck gold.
After releasing another amazingly successful album such as “Screw It” in 1991, D2 recorded a third disc for Sony entitled “Cockroach” which, due to legal wrangling, wouldn’t see the light of day until eight years later. Upon completion of the album, the band parted ways with lead singer Ted Poley. Needing a replacement, friend and former Elektra recording artist, Canadian Paul Laine stepped in, releasing “Dawn” as the band’s independent album in 1995. Two more successful studio albums came out later: “Four The Hard Way”, the band’s triumphant return to the original melodic rock roots, and “The Return Of The Great Gildersleeves”, both greeted with stellar reviews from critics and fans the world over, further helping cement the band’s reputation.
2004 saw the official return in the line-up of the original singer Ted Poley after an 11 year absence and this forthcoming album will be the band’s first studio effort with Ted since the “Cockroach” sessions! “”We are very excited to be recording with Ted again, as I know our fans are, as well”, says drummer Steve West who announces that “the new one will be a true Danger Danger record: a present for the fans who will surely be pleased”. DANGER DANGER line-up today includes also the other original member Bruno Ravel and guitarist Rob Marcello.
The band is looking forward to enter the studio, right after the special gig that DANGER DANGER will play in Ludwigsburg, Germany at the UNITED FORCES OF ROCK FESTIVAL next Sunday, September the 30th, where they will perform together with JOE LYNN TURNER, STAN BUSH, WHITE WOLF, SOUL DOCTOR, LAST AUTUMN’S DREAM and HUMAN ZOO.
“We’re looking to have the record finished by the end of the year and we’re also looking forward to meet all our European fans in Germany” concludes Steve West!
So be there and let’s all wait the new year to rock again with DANGER DANGER!
Comment: Could this be another band to join the Rocklahoma Music Festival in 2008?

‘Deadly Sins’ turned out to be one of the trickiest Seven Witches releases to complete – a solid year in the making – due to the fact that it is a concept record (based on the “7 Sins of Mahatma Gandhi”).
Additionally, other musicians lent a hand, including bassists Clint Arent (of Pain Museum), Kevin Bolembach (ex Non Fiction), and a drummer who goes by the nom de plum of ‘Troll.’
Frost (who also co-produced the album, along with Joey Vera who also mixed the release) is proud of this lofty metallic accomplishment – “This is a major up step or us. A masterpiece that we all put our hearts and souls into.

I must admit that Mower is far better than I ever could have expected. Pinpointing the band’s style is a little more difficult than I expected. There are elements of hardcore, a little bit thrash, mixed with a little bit of stoner rock for good measure. Within the songs, I can hear elements of early Metallica fused with Anthrax, Rob Zombie and a small dash of Black Sabbath. The energy in the songs captivates my ears with every spin.
While I release this type of rock may not be everyone’s cup of tea, Mower’s latest CD, Not For You is one worth checking out. My favorite cuts so far are American Psycho, Look Away, U-Turn, Road Rage, and the thrashing cover of California Dreamin’.
Mower is the second metal band that I have heard lately using a dual vocal approach (the first being Atreyu.) The mixture of Brian Sheerin and Dominic Moscatello is a little different than Atreyu’s approach. One singer is all metal, the other is hardcore. It makes for an intersting mix.
Not For You is a short listen. It has 15 songs clocking in at roughly 39 minutes. Most of the songs here are less than 3 minutes in length. To me, it is the shorter length on the songs that makes this disc more listenable. If you like you music on the heavier side, Mower may be an act for you to get a quick Metal fix.

Platinum rock band Drowning Pool is a band on a mission. Immediately following the successful launch of their “This Is For the Soldiers Tour”, the Texas rockers have stepped it up with Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), actively campaigning for better mental health care for U.S. Troops on Capitol Hill. Drowning Pool and IAVA presented Representative Patrick Murphy with a petition containing 25,000 signatures in support of the Lane Evans Veterans Health and Benefits Improvement Act of 2007. Murphy, who is the first Iraq veteran to serve in Congress, is a co-sponsor of the bipartisan legislation, which requires mandatory mental health care screening for returning troops. He served in Baghdad in 2003-2004 as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division.
Drowning Pool and IAVA first joined forces to launch the “This Is For The Soldiers” campaign and accompanying website www.thisisforthesoldiers.org, which continues to ask supporters to sign an online petition urging Congress to pass the Lane Evans bill. The group has been instrumental in involving their young fans in the political process and they challenge their fellow recording artists to show their support for our troops.
“It’s exciting to be on Capitol Hill with a rock band to raise awareness about this urgent issue. Tens of thousands of people from across the country have stepped up to help us support the troops,” said Paul Rieckhoff, IAVA Executive Director. “More than 1.5 million Americans have served in Iraq and Afghanistan and almost a third of them will face a serious mental health issue, ranging from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) to depression. It’s critical that we get these troops the help they need now and the Lane Evans Bill is a major step in that direction. We are honored to work with Representative Murphy and Drowning Pool to get this important legislation passed.”
To view footage from the press conference click here: http://www.ivpnewmedia.com/10thst/dpvideo/pc.htm
Drowning Pool is a longtime supporter of the troops. The band’s current single “Soldiers” pays homage to our Armed Forces and their current “This Is For The Soldiers Tour” donates one dollar of every ticket sold to IAVA and the USO, while encouraging young fans to support the cause. The band has been a favorite of U.S. troops, performing USO tours in Iraq, Kuwait and South Korea.
Drowning Pool’s lead vocalist Ryan McCombs says, “It’s an honor and a privilege to work on something as important as this legislation.”
The Lane Evans Bill would help troops and veterans get mental health care in the following ways:
-Require in-person mental health screening for returning combat veterans
-Extend the window for Veterans Affairs mental health treatment
-Establish a registry to track Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to monitor their health and benefit use
-Improve the transferability of military records from Department of Defense to Veterans Affairs
IAVA, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, is the nation’s first and largest organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, representing more than 60,000 members and civilian supporters in all 50 states. For more information visit www.iava.org.

A hard rock show that neither my wife or I could miss came to Mason, Ohio on Saturday night. I have been a fan of Black Stone Cherry since I first picked up their disc in 2006. I am proud to say these hard rockers are from my homestate of Kentucky. After seeing them live last year, I knew I wouldn’t miss this show. Jackyl is a favorite of my wife’s, so this show was definitely a win-win situation for both of us. The fact that this was a free show didn’t hurt matters either. The stage for this show was erected outside the Aces and Eights Harley Davidson dealership. Live bands played all day to take part in their 7th anniversary celebration. The turnout for this show was pretty amazing. I estimate about 3,000 – 4,000 people were there (It could have been more. The area by the stage was completely packed.)
Black Stone Cherry took the stage around 7:15 or so. The band played several of the tracks from their CD including, Backwoods Gold, Lonely Train, and Hell and High Water. They also threw in a cover of Rick Deringer’s Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo, and a blues song that I was not familiar with.
Drummer John Fred Young is fun to watch playing the drums. His playing and appearance reminds me of a young Tommy Aldridge. The show ended with Ben Wills, Chris Robertson and bassist John Lawhon playing with their guitars behind their necks. Cool Stuff! The band came out and did a meet and greet after the show. I came home with an autographed copy of the CD, and the picture below.
As a whole, Black Stone Cherry’s part of the show was great, and I was glad that I got to see them again. This show was their second to last U.S. date. They are about to embark on their tour of the U.K. and Europe in October. Once they finish up their tour they are coming back home to work on album #2!! For you fans in the United Kingdom that are just catching onto Black Stone Cherry (their debut CD was released in Europe recently) be sure to catch these guys live, you won’t be disappointed!
Here is a video I took of the band performing Hell or High Water!
I have seen Jackyl several times before and they have always been entertaining. Saturday night was no exception. The band was one big part that music just happned to be part of.
Jesse James was loud, rude and somewhat funny last night, and the fans love him for that. He was obviously there to party and have a good time. There was plenty of times that band passed around a bottle of Crown Royal, and it was empty by the time the show was done.
Jackyl performed many of the band’s hits including: Down on Me, Dirty Little Mind, When Will It Rain, I Stand Alone, Secret Of The Bottle and closed out with We’re AnAmerican Band, She Loves My Cock, and the Lumberjack.
During the show, Jesse had a bunch of scantilly clad women join him on the stage to further his birthday part. One of which had a snake around her neck. The crowd full of rowdy bikers seem to enjoy it.
Jackyl was fun to watch, and I almost forgot how good their brand of Southern Rock can be.
Great free hard rock shows like this do not come around very often, and I was glad that my family and I came to this show. Hopefully, I won’t have to wait until 2008 to catch another free one! What a way to close out Live Week at the Hard Rock Hideout!
Here is Jackyl peforming I Stand Alone. Enjoy!
If you are a KISS fan of any kind, this CD needs no introduction, you probably own this on multiple formats. For those of you that don’t, keep reading!
KISS Alive may be the most successful live hard rock disc of all time. This Album has sold over 4 million copies since its initial release. Rolling Stone Magazine has this disc listed as one of their Top 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
While I don’t agree with all of Rolling Stone’s choices, this is one that is a worthy selection.
Is KISS the greatest band of all time? Probably not. Is this the best live CD of all time? It is pretty damn close if it isn’t. The sound quality of this disc, is amazing, especially since it was recorded in ’75. I can listen to this 80 minute set repeatedly without getting bored.
This is truly a once in a lifetime live set, and I think the live energy of the KISS live performance is captured very well here.
If you are a hard rock fan, you owe it to yourself to pick up this excellent 2 disc set!

This CD is becoming one of the more rare live recordings that I have come across.
I have been a fan of Black ‘N Blue for a long time, but quite frankly, I don’t think this recording captures the best live show the band has ever done. It does have a few of the bands hits, but it is a short set (less than an hour).
This isn’t a live CD that I will grab for regularly. I prefer the studio cuts over the live version here. This disc turns up on Ebay from time to time, and you can find used copies at amazon. This is a disc that the diehard Black ‘N Blue fans will search for only.

Sep. 26 – Guzzardo Music – Rockford IL

COSMOSQUAD has just released its fourth album, “Acid Test”. It marks the group’s first studio effort since 2001′s highly regarded “Squadrophenia” which firmly established the trio as one of the premier progressive instrumental acts on the scene. Co-produced by Kollman and Gaalaas at the drummer’s Crumb West Studios in Simi Valley, CA, “Acid Test” is the first COSMOSQUAD effort without co-founding member, Barry Sparks, whose bass duties have been filled by a trio of capable, well credentialed players in Paul Shihadeh (SCOTT KINSEY), Kevin Chown (UNCLE CRACKER, EDWIN DARE), and the group’s new full-time addition, Christopher Maloney (DWEEZIL ZAPPA, HARDLINE).

This CD was recorded live during Jorn’s first concert in the USA, at the ProgPower VII Festival in Atlanta, where he performed as headliner on September 16th, 2006.
For those of you that have never checked out Jorn Lande before, Live in America is as good of a place, as any to begin. This double CD set features the incredible vocals of Jorn Lande, and the amazing guitar work of Tore Moren and Jörn Viggo Lofstad (The tandem from the superb 2006 release The Duke) , and also Steinar Krokmo on bass and Willy Bendiksen on drums.
During this set, Jorn covers songs from his releases: The Duke, Unlocking the Past, Out To Every Nation, as well as songs that he did with Beyond Twighlight, and Masterplan plus covers of songs by Deep Purple, Dio, and Whitesnake.
The only downfall with this disc, is its length. The live tunes with solos only last 75 minutes, and with the vast amount of music Jorn has put out over the years, this set could have been well over 2 hours long. There are a couple of nice bonuses however.
There are three studio tracks, the 2007 version of Out to Every Nation, the Black Sabbath cover Lonely Is The Word/Letters From Earth and Sacrificial Feelings (which was only available previously as a bonus track.) This is nice bonus to a great disc.
The sound quality on Live on America is superb, and the music is excellent. One listen to this set and you will quickly realize the amazing musicians Jorn Lande has in his band. The excellent musicianship plus the amazing vocals of Jorn Lande makes this a live collection that should appeal to most 80′s hard rock fans. (Jorn Lande fans probably already own this). If you are a fan of live hard rock music, DO NOT MISS Live in America!

One thing is for sure, if you go to see Sammy Hagar live, you are in for a good time. A Sammy Hagar show is more like a party with 20,000 fans. This DVD captures the party like atmosphere, with excellent sound and video coverage.
The set list is as follows: Mas Tequila, Mexico, There’s Only One Way to Rock, (Bob Dylan) Rainy Day Women, The Girl Gets Around, Rock Candy, I’ll Fall in, Love Again, I’ll Take You There, Sam I Am, Little White Lie, I Can’t Drive 55, Heavy Metal, Good Enough, Summer Nights, Right Now, Finish What You Started, Best of Both Worlds, (The Beastie Boys) Fight for Your Right, and Cabo Wabo.
During the second half of the show, Michael Anthony ala The Other Half, joins Sammy On Stage to do some Van Halen Tunes. Wabo guitarist, Vic Johnson shows plenty of prowess on the six string, as does Sammy Hagar during this show.
The only thing I didn’t care is some of the background vocals by the Wabos, but that was only a minor annoyance. As a whole this is a very good show, and one worth seeing on DVD.
The concert lasts one hour and fifty minutes. This DVD is also packed with Interviews and Music Videos too!
This is a very rent worthy and disc, and for Sammy Hagar Redheads, this is a must own DVD!

Drowning Pool is finally bringing their cause to Washington, DC, alongside the Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). Congressman Jim Moran will host a press conference on Wednesday 9/19 at 10:30am in support of the Lane Evans Mental Health Care Reform Bill on behalf of active duty troops and returning veterans. Drowning Pool and the IAVA teamed up earlier this year to support the bill and began working together on bringing attention to the current situation that US troops are facing upon returning from battle. This will be the first time that all three parties have come together publicly to speak out on the issue.
Drowning Pool are currently headlining the “This Is For The Soldiers” tour. For every ticket sold on the tour the band is donating a portion of the profits to the IAVA and the USO. Earlier in the year Drowning Pool helped launch thisisforthesoldiers.org with the IAVA and set up a petition that has received over 25,000 signatures in support of the proposed legislation.

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the release of the brand new Mark Boals / Magnus Karlsson cooperation THE CODEX on November 9th 2007.
THE CODEX marks the return to recording – after a 3 years hiatus – for Mark Boals, known as one of the best singers ever to work with Yngwie Malmsteen and first class vocalist, awarded in 1999 by BURRN! Magazine readers in Japan as Best Overall singer of the year.
Mark also released 3 successful solo albums and fronted the Power-Prog Metal band Ring Of Fire (which such musical giants as Virgil Donati, Tony MacAlpine and Vitalij Kuprij), with whom he released another 3 studio albums and one live cd / dvd.
“I am feeling great, better than ever!” says Boals about his comeback, “I was interested in working with Magnus after hearing his work, I love his guitar playing, and of course his songwriting is superb! There are great melodies and I really enjoyed singing on this one. It’s really a catchy album, and I have been listening to it a lot, which I rarely do with my work”.
Boals’ partner in crime on THE CODEX is another Swedish guitar-wizard, Magnus Karlsson, a super-talented and busy guy actually, since he is the mastermind behind Starbreaker (with Tony Harnell) and the recent very successful Allen / Lande collaboration.
“It’s really an honour to work with such a fantastic singer”, states Karlsson, “It’s very easy to write for Mark because he has this enormous vocal range. I have never heard anything like it! He sings some unbelievably high notes and he does it so beautiful. Musically I wanted to stretch the borders a little more than usual, with almost a Power Metal style in some songs and very soft parts in others. I use a lot of orchestral arrangement to make it bigger but at the same time I try to leave space for the heaviness in the guitars, drums and bass. I also wanted this to be an album with focus on the vocals and melody as I always do but I added a lot of guitar shredding as well”.
Completing the line-up are Linus Abrahamson on bass and Daniel Flores (Mind’s Eye) on drums.
THE CODEX is truly a creative and diverse album which shows a very different side of Karlsson songwriting and gives Boals the chance to showcase some of his most aggressive and heaviest vocals ever. It is probably the heaviest cd where the two artists have ever been involved with, still keeping intact the trademarks of a monster Melodic Metal album.
Headbangers are kindly invited to sink their teeth into this !
