To kick off live week, here is a video I took in Cherokee, NC of Tesla performing Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Saturday Night Special. ( I was apparently trying to shoot over some taller heads, but the sound quality is great. Check it out!)
There were two different versions of this record released. One version in the UK and Canada, and another in the United States.
The U.S. version added John Sykes as a third guitar player over Mel Galley and Micky Moody. The ultra slick U.S. version focused less on the keyboards of Jon Lord, and is more centered around John Sykes playing.
To me, the U.S. album is the perfect set up for the band’s monstrous 1987 album.
This album is full of stadium ready anthems. Slide It In, Slow An’ Easy, and Love Ain’t No Stranger are all excellent songs that band continues to perform live today. Other favorites of mine from this album are, Hungry For Love, Spit It Out, and Standing In the Shadow.
This album made me a lifetime John Sykes, and David Coverdale fan, and more importantly, a Whitesnake fan.
Slide It In is an album that is often over looked by its ultra popular successor in 1987, but is a record that should not be missed!

German industrial metal icons, Rammstein, are set to release their Volkerball DVD on September 18th. The DVD features explosive performances from around the world, and features a full concert from Nimes, France. Rammstein fans can choose between three formats for the release ranging from a standard 2-disc package to a limited edition 190-page book that contains photos from the tour and 4 discs that have a bonus documentary disk and two live audio discs. For US fans of the band, this will be their first chance to see the amazing pyrotechnics and dramatic stage show that has been absent from America for a long time.
Get a taste of what Volkerball has to offer in this video clip for their song “Sonne” filmed at the Brixton Academy in London.
In the original film, Jamie Lee Curtis (as Laurie Strode) was the centerpiece and star of the movie.
In Rob Zombie’s new movie, Michael Myers is the star. Rob Zombie does an excellent job portraying the psychopathic origins of young Michael Myers, leading into a character that is far more realistic, and more brutal that the character in the original movie.
Rob Zombie does a good job lacing the film with some excellent hard rock music, which is available on the the Halloween movie soundtrack. (Nice touch with young Michael’s concert t-shirt.)
There are scenes that will put you on the edge of your seat, and some that will make you squirm, and possibly gross you out.
This is a violent film, and is not one for young teenagers!
The question everyone asks, is it as good as the original? In some ways yes, and in some ways no. This is a totally different film, and it stands up by its own merits. There are parts of the original story that are the same, but a lot of this movie is quite different.
The new Michael Myers gets in to your psyche, and may creep you out a lot more than the original.
In conclusion, Rob Zombie’s view is an interesting one. Your enjoyment will probably be much greater if you are fan of this genre of movies.

This CD gets a lot of play on XMRadio’s The Boneyard, but sadly, is becoming rarer than hen’s teeth. Used copies sell for over $20.00 at Amazon.com and on Ebay.
Is it worth seeking out? Absolutely! The songs Bang Go the Bells, Hammer Swings Down, and the Kid Goes Wild (featuring the late, great Sam Kinision) are worth the price of admission just by themselves.
With three big videos on MTV at the time, it puzzles me why this band didn’t hit the same level of success as some of their late 80′s counterparts.
To me their debut release is their best effort, and is one that will appeal to most 80′s hard rock fans. If you can find it, grab it, you wont be disappointed.

Less than a week after his run-in with Kid Rock at the VMAs, Tommy Lee announced that he is quitting Motley Crue. The remaining bandmembers are suing the band’s former manager for lost revenues; they claim that the manager convinced Lee to pursue reality TV shows and rather than tour with the band.

Comment: This wouldn’t be the first time that Tommy has quit the band. I think Vince Neil has found an excellent replacement in his solo band with drummer, Zoltan Chaney. If you were at Rocklahoma, you know how good Zoltan is already!

No Fuel Left For the Pilgrims is a late 80′s classic that has been out of print for years.
I once owned this on cassette, and have not been able to track this one down again until now.
This band was wrongly lumped into the hair metal category, and even had a couple of videos on the MTV Head Banger’s Ball.
If you put AC/DC into a blender, added the funk of the Electric Boys, and maybe a little bit of Drivin’ N’ Cryin’, and hit puree, you might get something that sounds something like D*A*D. This is a cool CD with some funky rock tunes.
The gruff vocals of Jesper Binzer compliment the heavy and sometimes steel guitar licks of his brother Jacob. It is one of the more unique sounding CD’s of the late 80′s, and a worthy pick up in 2007. Check it out!

The group split in 1980 after the death of drummer John Bonham and have performed only a handful of reunion gigs, last taking the stage 12 years ago at their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Music Web site NME.com reported the show will be held in November in London.
Bonham’s son Jason is expected to wield the drum sticks for the band known to many fans simply as Zep.
Rounding out Led Zeppelin, rated the best ever hard-rock band by U.S. channel VH1, would be its classic founding trio of singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page and bassist John Paul Jones.
NME.com said it would be a one-off show, not a full-fledged reunion tour.
Plant and Page have joined forces over the years, notably on an album in 1994, but Jones has been more distant. When Bonham passed away after a long battle with alcoholism, his bandmates said Led Zeppelin, formed in 1968, had died with him.
November is the scheduled release month for a greatest hits collection from the band.
The reunion gig is slated for London’s 02 Arena, which has a capacity of 20,000.

One of the nicer surprises in 2007, is the debut release by Detroit rockers, Ugly.
I had my first taste of Ugly in 2007, when they performed live in during the Labor day riverfest celebration in Cincinnati. I liked the live show so much, it only made sense to check out their new CD.
Much like the band’s live show, this CD does not disappoint! This is a hard rock CD with a great classic rock feel. There are great vocals, guitar solos and plenty of rocking drum beats to get your blood pumping.
24 Hours sounds like it was shot out of rock and roll cannon. This song will grab most listeners on the very first play.
Pusher keeps the party going. The cowbell drumming of Donnie Highland really turns the energy up on this track and makes this a fun song to listen to.
Friday Night (In the City) is a solid track with major radio potential. The background vocals of bassist Frank Green and Kevin McCreery, greatly enhances the playability of this song.
Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll was the first song that I heard by Ugly. I liked this song enough to check the band out, and I am glad I did. This song kicks ass! Check out the video below!
Son is a low tempo bluesy number that has to be listened to to be fully appreciated.
Social Keeper is an upbeat rocker that has all of the swagger of an AC/DC song. Great Stuff! I took a video of the band performing this song in Cincinnati, check it out!
I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love the song, Driving Me Under. Kevin McCreery’s smoking guitar licks and the overall sing along quality of this song has made this one of my favorite tunes on this record.
Idea is another song that I first heard Ugly perform in Cincinnati. This is another good sleaze filled rocker.
Washed Out has an almost Beatlesque feel to it. The sound of this track was completely unexpected, but totally cool.
The Cats Ass has a killer groove, and a Guns ‘N Roses sleezy vibe about it.
Everything is a mid tempo ballad with monster radio potential.
Everytime I listen to The Train it reminds of the same style of bluesy rock that Aerosmith is famous for. This is an exceptional track to close this record out with.
The shredding guitars of Kevin McCreery, and Geo Teubl’s excellent vocal delivery really drives these hard rocking tunes home. At times, Geo reminds me of The Cult’s Ian Astbury, and that is very cool indeed! Producer Rick Parashar (Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, 3 Doors Down) did a bang up job with this CD. The production quality on this disc is top notch. This is a energetic disc full of hard-driving, sleazy good tunes that will put a big smile on your face. The tunes are so good, they are Ugly!
If the rock gods are kind, the whole world will know about Ugly before long. You can get on board by now by pre-ordering Ugly’s new CD through Rock Ridge Music.com for a mere $8.99. At this price, it is a steal. Go buy it today!
For more information on Ugly, stop by the band’s myspace page here.

Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the signing of SILENT RAGE for the release of the band’s fourth studio album.
Silent Rage formed in 1985 and became immediately well-known in the Californian scene, thanks to the captivating vocals, their style of blending guitar and bass and signature song writing. Their debut album “Shattered Hearts” was produced by the legendary Paul Sabu in 1987 and gained immediate attention from the Hard Rock fans all over the world. One year later, Gene Simmons signed them to his own label and in 1989 “Don’t Touch Me There” followed up. This album reached #1 on European Import charts and is still today regarded as one of the top examples of Melodic Hard Rock sound of the late 80’s.
The band finally came back with a third studio album “Still Alive” in 2002. In the summer 2007 the band featuring founding members by EJ Curse on bass, Jesse Damon on vocals and guitar, Mark Hawkins on guitar and with Rodney Pino on drums, went back to the studio to give birth to their long awaited new cd.
The guys are right now recording the new songs at Redrum Recording Studios in Los Angeles with former Guns n Roses & Rockstar Supernova guitarist, Gilby Clarke producing and mixing. Having mid-summer pre-production behind them, the band is well into tracking new songs for the latest CD and they’re anticipating a completion date by the end of October. Look for some very interesting special guest appearances.
Jesse Damon states: ” It’s a great time for the band right now, we’re all very excited about signing with Frontiers Records and being in the studio recording new songs with Gilby Clarke as our Producer! Everyone in the band is focused and giving 100 % to this new CD. Expect strong performances with a classic Silent Rage style rock”!

The long-awaited first live album from Rob Zombie has arrived. A brain-bashing, soul-shaking sonic earthquake, Zombie – Live (Geffen Records/UMe), released October 23, 2007, in both clean and explicit versions, spans songs from the hard rocker’s entire career.
Recorded in 2006 during the tour supporting the Educated Horses album, which hit #5 on the Pop chart, Zombie Live finds Zombie leading a supercharged band featuring guitarist John 5, bassist Piggy D, drummer Tommy Clufetos and was produced by long-time co-writer and producer Scott Humphrey.
Zombie – Live includes the concert’s renditions of the Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy-nominated “Thunder Kiss ‘65” and “Black Sunshine” from White Zombie’s 1992 major label debut La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 1, which went Top 40 and double platinum. “Super Charger Heaven,” “Creature Of The Wheel” and “More Human Than Human,” also Grammy nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance, were first heard on White Zombie’s 1995 Top 10, double platinum Astro-Creep: 2000 Songs Of Love, Destruction And Other Synthetic Delusions Of The Electric Head.
From Rob Zombie’s 1998 solo debut, the Top 5, triple platinum Hellbilly Deluxe: 13 Tales Of Cadaverous Cavorting Inside The Spookshow International, are “Superbeast,” “Living Dead Girl,” “Demonoid Phenomenon” and “Dragula.” Songs from 2001’s Top 10 and platinum The Sinister Urge are “Demon Speeding,” “Dead Girl Superstar” and “Never Gonna Stop (The Red Red Kroovy).” The latest songs hail from Educated Horses: “Sawdust In The Blood,” “American Witch,” “Let It All Bleed Out” and “Lords Of Salem.” Heard too are the title songs from the first two feature films directed by Zombie, 2000’s cult smash hit House Of 1000 Corpses and 2004’s critically acclaimed The Devil’s Rejects.
Rob Zombie unleashed his terrifying remake of the classic film Halloween on August 31, 2007, premiering on more than 2000 screens. Zombie, who previously wrote and directed The Devil’s Rejects (2000) and House Of 1000 Corpses (2004), offers an entirely new take on the highly successful series of Halloween films that began in 1978. As a recording artist Rob Zombie has sold over 15 million albums worldwide and continues to be one of Geffen Record’s top selling artists.
The DVD companion to Zombie – Live will be available in the Spring of 2008 and will include bonus footage.

This past weekend, my wife and I made the trek to Cherokee, NC for the Cherokee Survivors Motorcycle Rally and Concert for our Anniversary. We stayed in Gatlinburg, TN, which is roughly 35 miles from the site of the concert. The only way to Cherokee, NC from our hotel is a very long, and extremely windy two lane highway through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This road is not for the faint of heart, or those with weak stomachs. It takes no less than an hour, to get there from Gatlinburg.
As it turns out, this was also the weekend of the Shades of the Past Rod Run. If you live in the Eastern United States and own a muscle car, or hot rod from the 1930′s or beyond, chances are you were in Gatlinburg, TN over the weekend. It made for an extremely hectic weekend, with tons of people that were in town for both events.
RATT – Friday, September 7th
On Friday night, we made it to the concert just a few minutes before RATT took the stage. This was our second time to see RATT this year, and after the Cincinnati show, my expectations were low. I have been a big fan of RATT in the past, and still listen to plenty of RATT tunes in 2007, but once again, I was not impressed by RATT, or mainly Stephen Pearcy. The band itself was actually much tighter than the Cincinnati show. Warren DiMartini was great, and the whole band had a lot more energy that the previous show we saw. The song selection was a lot better too. This is the set list from the Friday night show:
Walkin’ the Dog
Dangerous But Worth The Risk
You Think Your Tough
City to City
Slip of The Lip
Way Cool Jr.
Nobody Rides For Free
Back For More
Lack of Communication
Lay It Down
You’re In Love
Round and Round
The major problem here once again was Stephen Pearcy’s voice. His range is not what it used to be. He sounded marginally better than the 2007 Cincinnati show, but no where near as good as he has in the past. Another disappointment was that they only played for an hour. As a headliner, I would expect the band to play a longer set.
FIREHOUSE AND TESLA – Saturday, September 8th
On Saturday, we returned to Cherokee to catch Firehouse and Tesla play. I have seen Firehouse a few times in the past, but it had been a few years since I have seen them live. I am glad to say that Firehouse was awesome. They played an extremely tight set, and covered material off of all of their releases. I was surprised when they performed Door to Door, off of their 2004 disc Prime Time. This is a hellaciously good song that every Nascar fan needs to hear. This song is sung by drummer Michael Foster. Great Stuff!
Guitarist Bill Leverty was pretty amazing to watch. I have a new respect for him as a guitarist. Luckily, I was able to meet Bill after their show. He informed me that he had a new instrumental CD coming out next month. Check out BillLeverty.com for more details on the CD.
The one unusual thing about this concert is The bikers were allowed to park their bikes fairly close to the stage.
Sadly, the drunken and rowdy bikers were getting extremely obnoxious at this show. They decided to have an engine revving contests throughout the concert. It sometimes made hearing what the singers had to say, and hearing the bands perform somewhat difficult.
Even though my patience was thinning, due to the rude and intoxicated bikers, I was anxiously awaiting to see Tesla play. I have seen Tesla several times in the past, and they have never disappointed me. Saturday night was no exception!
Tesla took the stage around 9:40 P.M. or so, and played close to two hours long. It was an extremely tight set that inluded tunes from all six of their studio releases. This was the first time I heard the band perform any songs off of their 1994 disc, Bust a Nut, or their 2004 effort, Into the Now. They also did a few cover tunes off their Side A and Side B discs of Real to Reel.
New band member, guitarist Dave Rude complimented Frank Hannon’s excellent guitar licks greatly. Jeff Keith was in perfect vocal form all night. Troy Luccketta was kicking ass on the drums all night.
Frank Hannon played two different twelve string guitars during the show. One of which I recognized to be the one that belonged to the late great Steve Clark from Def Leppard. See this link on the story for that. He was also entertaining with his multiple hat changes (tophat, Uncle Sam, Indian Head dress).
In Conclusion, both Firehouse and Tesla put on a killer show. It was a great night of rock and roll Saturday Night in Cherokee, NC. I am glad there are great hard rock bands like Firehouse and Tesla that are still kicking ass in 2007! Don’t miss them if they hit your town!

Swiss Metal band “The Order” has a new video, “Satisfaction“.This is on their CD, Metal Casino, available now through Impulse Music.
Holy Diver is the debut by DIO, which features Vivian Campbell on Guitar, Black Sabbath band mate, Vinny Appice on drums and Jimmy Bain on bass.
To this listener, Holy Diver will always be a timeless metal classic. Ronnie James Dio’s ultra powerful vocals alone, make this a disc for all metalheads to check out. Vivian Campbell’s playing on this record is nothing short of superb. His playing on Holy Diver is far beyond anything he has done with his current employer, Def Leppard.
Vinny Appice has always been a great metal drummer, and his heavy drum beats on this record are nothing short of perfect!
The songs Holy Diver and Rainbow in the Dark, are still two of the biggest rock anthems that Ronnie James Dio has ever sung.
Some other favorite cuts of mine off of this disc, are Stand Up and Shout and Don’t Talk to Strangers.
Ronnie James Dio has been, and forever will be one of my favorite metal singers. I have followed his career since the Elf days, and Holy Diver is still one of my favorite records by Ronnie and company.
If you don’t own this record….what are you waiting for? Don’t miss out on this Classic Metal record!

One of the more obscure Pop Metal bands of the early 90′s is New York’s Trouble Tribe.
This band features singer Jimmy Driscoll , Adam Wacht on lead guitar, Eric Klaastad on bass, and Stephen Durrell on drums.
The band had a semi-hit on MTV with Here Comes Trouble. On the opening of this song, Jimmy Driscoll and band sounds a lot like mid 80′s KISS.
It is a fairly decent pop metal disc by one of the lesser known bands of the hair metal era. This record has a few solid cuts including Tattoo, Here Comes Trouble, and the solid power ballad, In The End. The band also covered the Beatles’ Dear Prudence.
After Trouble Tribe broke up, Adam Wacht later played in the bands Left For Dead and Opinion with drummer Bobby Borg. Jimmy Driscoll started the band, In the Wild.
You can still find a few used copies of the Trouble Tribe disc at Amazon.com. It is becoming more rare by the day. It is a nice little glam metal gem that is worth seeking out.

LOS ANGELES, CA – ATREYU’s Lead Sails Paper Anchor rocketed onto Billboard’s Top 200 this week at No. 8, and Billboard’s Rock and Hard Rock Album charts at No. 1, making it the highest-charting album of the band’s career. The debut is also significant in that Atreyu distinguish themselves as one among a very short list of hard rock acts to have debuted in the Top 10 this year.
News of the album’s explosive arrival follows a flurry of headline-making moves for Atreyu, who were recently named as a headliner on one of the biggest tours of the new year: “Rockstar Taste of Chaos Tour.” That announcement comes on the heels of the Family Values Tour, which saw Atreyu play third on the bill and share stages alongside Korn and Evanescence. Atreyu will launch a headlining tour on September 9th at the Big Easy in Boise, ID with openers Haste The Day, It Dies Today and So They Say.
Lead Sails Paper Anchor has been drawing rave reviews from media outlets around the world, including Metal Hammer, who called the disc “a truly landmark album.” Kerrang! gave the record 4 K’s and Blender gave it 3 = stars and called it “metal that takes you to a magical bygone era.” Revolver awarded the album 4 stars and praised it for flowing “beautifully through the speakers” and for being “a coffin-tight collection of singles.”
Among those singles is propulsive lead track “Becoming The Bull,” which is featured in EA Sports mega-popular new Madden ‘08 video game. The band and director Kevin Kerslake (Green Day, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) shot a video for the song, which was recently added at MTV2.
Atreyu recorded Lead Sails Paper Anchor this past spring with producer John Feldmann (The Used, Good Charlotte). The album was mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Slipknot, Linkin Park).
Don’t miss your chance to catch Atreyu live and hear them perform songs from new album Lead Sails Paper Anchor.

I haven’t listened to Supagroup before, so I didn’t know what to expect.
After listening to Rules a couple of times, I can safely say they fit into the Classic Rock mold. They have a party rock sound that is similar to, but not the same as AC/DC.
This disc is filled with high speed to mid-tempo, 3 chord mayhem that will get you on your feet rocking.
Let’s Go (Get Wasted) is about as big of a party anthem as you are ever going to hear.
Other highlights on this disc include the bluesy, “I’m Gonna Change“, The infectious “Ready To Go”, “Bastard” and “It Takes Balls”.
If you are a fan of AC/DC, Rhino Bucket or Airbourne, Supagroup may be a band for you to check out!
Rules is a solid slab of feel good, hard rock and will whet your appetite for the new disc, Fire for Hire coming at the end of September.
