OZZY OSBOURNE: New Album Is In The Same League As ‘Blizzard Of Ozz’, ‘Diary Of A Madman’

Ozzy Osbourne has told Dan Epstein of Revolver magazine (web site) that he has finally found the perfect setting for making records: the newly soundproofed guest house behind his Beverly Hills mansion, which he’s outfitted with a mixing desk and a ProTools rig.

“When I made records before, I’d have to get up, get in a cab or car, go to the studio, and wait for everyone to turn up,” Osbourne explained. “If you’re already inspired before you leave for the studio, you’re fucked by the time you get there! But now I have the luxury of working in my own home. I can play the music on my own sound system, and I can lie down in my room and watch my flat-screen TV whenever I like.”

Unlike 2001’s slickly produced “Down to Earth”, the last album of original Ozzy material, the new disc promises to be a rawer and heavier affair. Recorded with the same band that backed Osbourne on his scattered 2006 Ozzfest dates — Zakk Wylde on guitar, Mike Bordin on drums, and former ROB ZOMBIE bassist Rob “Blasko” Nicholson — the album has no official producer, although longtime Mutt Lange protégé Kevin Churko is serving as the engineer.

“Kevin‘s working the machines and helping me with the songwriting,” said Osbourne. “He really knows what he’s doing with the ProTools, which is good because I can’t work the fucking thing. I can barely work a light switch!”

“We just went in and jammed out the riffs, just like how they made ‘Back in Black’ and all the SABBATH record,” said Wylde. “I don’t need Bob Rock there to tell me what to do, like that ‘Vagina Monologues’ band METALLICA. When you know where you’re going, you don’t need to ask for fucking directions! It sounds like classic Ozzy — there’s piano ballads, there’s an acoustic thing, and then there’s the heavy shit. From the beginning, Oz kept saying to me, ‘Zakk, we need another ‘No More Tears’ — we’ve gotta piss all over that fuckin’ record. This thing’s gotta be able to hang with ‘Diary of a Madman’!'”

“I always try to make a great album,” says Osbourne. “It’s not like I go in there and go, ‘You know what? I’ve had a great run — I’m gonna do a piece of shit for my next album!’ But to be perfectly truthful to you, ‘Down to Earth’ was just a filler album to me. It did well, and some people liked it, and I loved the ballad on it [‘Dreamer’]. But this album I put in the same league as ‘No More Tears’, ‘Blizzard of Ozz’, and ‘Diary’. It’s definitely my influence of SABBATH coming out, here and there. But then again, I would have liked to see SABBATH put out an album like this at this stage of the game.”

For more on Ozzy Osbourne‘s new solo album, pick up the March 2007 issue of Revolver magazine, set to hit newsstands this coming Monday, January 15. More information is available at www.revolvermag.com.

Frontiers Records is very pleased to announce the release of two separate JORN records entitled “Unlocking The Past” and “The Gathering” on January 27th 2007.

The concept behind this dual release is to encounter the fans’ request for more material and to make some of Jorn’s earlier work more available.

“With “The Gathering””, Jorn says, “I’m removing dust from some of my earlier recordings because I believe some of these songs deserve a second chance in history”. “Some tracks have been rerecorded from scratch, simply because I felt they would sound better with new arrangements and approach” continues the Norwegian singer, adding “Others have been remixed and have this way been given a “face lift” due to the fact that the original recordings didn’t sound that great productionwise. All songs have been digitally mastered by my good friend Tommy Hansen and I hope that this album will please my old as well as my newer fans”.

“Unlocking the Past” includes some previously unreleased cover songs that were originally considered to be “leftovers” or additional bonus tracks for previous JORN albums. Many of them were never included on any official release. Some brand new covers were also recorded specifically for this release. Dust has been brushed from these recordings; the remix of “Burn”, “The day the earth caught fire” (which originally appeared on Jorn’s solo debut album “Starfire”), and the remastered version of “On and On” (which was supposed to appear on a Millennium covers album a few years back), complete the tracklisting of the album.

“I’m very excited about releasing these songs from the treasure chest” Jorn says and surely this is nothing less than a nice present for the numerous fans of one of the greatest Rock singers today.

ROCK STAR SUPERNOVA, the band featuring drummer Tommy Lee (MOTLEY CRUE), guitarist Gilby Clarke (ex-GUNS N’ ROSES), vocalist Lukas Rossi and bassist Johnny Colt (BLACK CROWES, TRAIN), took part in “CD USA”‘s broadcast of the “America’s Party” New Year’s Eve celebration from the famous Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas. Universal Music has set up an alternative, free download site for fans who purchased the “Kiss Alive! 1975-2000” box set without the bonus tracks — “2000 Man” and “God of Thunder”. If any KISS fans can’t get the replacement discs from Best Buy, they can use the following code from January 8 through January 14 ONLY to get the two tracks: P3Hw6qV6. Click here and enter the code to download the songs now.

As previously reported, the “Kiss Alive! 1975 – 2000” box set sold just over 9,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 167 on The Billboard 200 chart.

“Kiss Alive! 1975-2000” comes with the first three “Alive” albums from 1975, 1977, and 1993, as well as the December 31, 1999 Millennium show from Vancouver, British Columbia, which was supposed to be “Alive IV” but was never released.

The first “Alive!” album was a landmark for the band, becoming their first gold record, but singer-bassist Gene Simmons told Launch that their label wasn’t in favor of the idea. “We were on our last legs, Casablanca was gonna go belly-up,” he said. “We didn’t get paid for the album — in fact, when we told the record company we were gonna do a live record, they didn’t want to do that, because live records didn’t work. In those days, a live album was a liability. You did that after your career was over.”

Jonathan Cohen of Billboard.com reports that VAN HALEN, R.E.M., PATTI SMITH, THE RONETTES and GRANDMASTER FLASH AND THE FURIOUS FIVE will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame March 12 during a ceremony at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. To be eligible for induction, this year’s class had to release their first single no later than 1981.

VAN HALEN faces the decision of whether to perform at the ceremony with ex-members. The group is without a lead singer, although rumors are swirling that original frontman David Lee Roth will tour with the outfit this summer. In addition, Eddie Van Halen’s teenage son recently replaced longtime bassist Michael Anthony in the band.

In a recent interview with The Plain Dealer, former VAN HALEN frontman Sammy Hagar expressed doubt VAN HALEN’s members can put aside their differences long enough to get through the Rock Hall ceremony.

“I think it could be ugly,” he said. “This might be the best one ever! It’s what everybody wants. They want to see blows thrown and yelling and screaming and people making fools of themselves and trying to outshine each other.

“This could be a real comedy, man. This could be a reality series right here.

“I don’t think it’s gonna be a real friendly, beautiful scene. . . .I could go there and jam with them. Ed, Mike, Al and I probably could pull it off, ’cause we just did it [in 2004]. We were professional when we went onstage.

“But you throw Dave in that mix, and I just don’t see it working. Dave’s gonna want it to be all about him. Ed’s gonna want it to be all about him. And that’s a tough one right there. I’ll probably just be sitting over in the corner, cracking up.”

According to the January 7, 2007 edition of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, GUNS N’ ROSES frontman Axl Rose is putting the final vocals down on the band’s new album that he has been working on at the Palms recording studios.

Rose announced last month on GUNS N’ ROSES‘ official web site a “tentative” March 6 release date for the band’s eternally delayed new CD, “Chinese Democracy”. In the posting, Rose also revealed he has split with longtime manager Merck Mercuriadis due to disagreements over the set up for the album release.

In order to properly plan for the release, GNR has canceled four January shows in Sacramento, Calif., Bakersfield, Calif., Reno, Nev., and San Diego.

“Chinese Democracy” is the first GUNS N’ ROSES album since the 1993 covers collection “The Spaghetti Incident”. In the ensuing decade, the group has lost every original member besides Rose and burned through a reported $13 million in recording expenses.

GUNS N’ ROSES‘ “Greatest Hits” collection, which was originally issued in March of 2004, was certified triple-platinum on April 11, 2006 by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for shipments in excess of three million copies. The CD sold 18,000 copies in the United States last week alone (week ending Dec. 31), bringing the total number of copies sold since its release to 3.39 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Judas Priest is Looking At Mid-Year Release For ‘Nostradamus’ Concept Album

Launch Radio Networks reports: Things are going well with the recording of the new JUDAS PRIEST album. It’s a concept album about the 16th Century French prophet Nostradamus, and the band has started thinking about release dates. Frontman Rob Halford told Launch that everyone’s excited about the project. “The writing sessions were fantastic — some of the best writing that (guitarists) Glenn (Tipton) and K.K. (Downing) and myself have ever created, and we’re in good shape, we’re recording. And finger’s crossed, and with the belief that it’s ready when it’s ready, we should be out by the middle of 2007 with ‘Nostradamus’.”

New Jani Lane project on the way in 2007.

I saw this over at Jani’s site, and thought I would post it here:

As quoted by Jani Lane, “I forgot to tell you I just finished my new project, Saints of the Underground. As I said previously the members include myslef, Keri Kelli on guitar (Alice Cooper), Bobby Blotzer on drums (Ratt). We have had the oppurtunity to mix our record with Andy Johns of Stones and Zeppelian fame to name two of hundreds.”

John Soeder of Cleveland’s The Plain Dealer reports:

VAN HALEN scored a landslide victory in The Plain Dealer‘s seventh annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame poll. The newspaper asked readers and visitors to http://www.cleveland.com to tell it which nominees on the latest official Rock Hall ballot are most worthy of induction.

“Quite honestly, I’m not surprised,” singer Sammy Hagar said when he was informed of the mandate.

VAN HALEN‘s music “is holding up really well,” said Hagar, 59. “I’m not taking all the credit. I mean, the earlier stuff with Roth set the tone for the whole thing. Thank God when I joined the band, it didn’t go down. We kept going. It was awesome.”

Earlier this year, it was announced that Eddie Van Halen‘s 15-year-old son Wolfgang had replaced Michael Anthony on bass.

“I really have no idea — ppphhhttt! — what’s going on,” Hagar said. “Michael and I are friends, which is why he isn’t in the band anymore.”

VAN HALEN and Hagar went their separate ways in 1996. Eight years later, Hagar was back in the fold for a reunion tour. In the interim, he co-headlined a tour with Roth.

There has been buzz lately about VAN HALEN hitting the road again with Roth. Hagar, for one, doesn’t buy it.

“I’m not saying I don’t want a Dave reunion,” Hagar said. “I think their best bet after this would be to go out with Dave. But I don’t see it working.

“Ed, Wolfie, Alex and some new kid would be what I put my money on. That could happen.

“But Dave and Ed working together? I don’t see it in a million years. I know ’em both.”

In fact, Hagar doubts VAN HALEN‘s members can put aside their differences even long enough to get through the Rock Hall ceremony.

0 David Lee Roth ponders Van Halen Reunion

  • December 28, 2006
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Hard Rock News

TMZ.com caught up with David Lee Roth in Manhattan last night (Wednesday, Dec. 27), and he warned that a potential VAN HALEN reunion could result in a NASCAR-style wreck. Or a “Jerry Springer”-like brawl. Or even a “Knots Landing”-esque bitchfight!

Diamond Dave, looking dapper and well-coifed outside of Marquee, said that he’s excited that VAN HALEN was nominated for a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but wondered whether the band would spontaneously combust if they reunited. For months, the band has hinted at a reunion, but Roth admitted in May that he hasn’t spoken to guitarist Eddie Van Halen for almost two years.

“A VAN HALEN reunion is a lot like NASCAR — are you there to see the winner or the crash?” mused Dave. “In this aspect, we’re a lot closer to ‘Jerry Springer’ meets ‘Knots Landing’, which, to me, sells T-shirts.”

Watch a video clip of David Lee Roth talking about a possible VAN HALEN reunion at this location.

Eddie Van Halen and his brother Alex are prepping for a VAN HALEN tour next year, with Eddie‘s 15-year-old son Wolfgang on bass instead of Michael Anthony, but no singer has been officially announced. Eddie recently told Guitar World magazine, “I’m telling Dave, ‘Dude, get your ass up here and sing, bitch! Come on!’… As it stands right now, the ball is in Dave‘s court. Whether he wants to rise to the occasion is entirely up to him, but we’re ready to go.”

There had also been talk recently that another member of the VAN HALEN clan would be the new singer, but most reports have said the job belongs to Roth, according to Launch Radio Networks.

As for having his son in the band, Eddie said, “Wolfgang breathes new life into what we’re doing. He brings youthfulness to something that’s inherently youthful. He’s only been playing bass for three months, but it’s spooky. He’s locked tight and puts an incredible spin on our (stuff). The kid is kicking my ass! He’s spanking me now, even though I never spanked him. To have my son follow in my footsteps on his own, without me pushing him into it, is the greatest feeling in the world.”

There’s no word on when the new lineup will be officially unveiled.

Los Angeles-based hard rock band DC4, featuring former DIO guitarist Rowan Robertson alongside brothers Jeff Duncan (ARMORED SAINT, ODIN) on lead vocals and guitar, Shawn Duncan (ODIN, BIRD OF PREY) on drums, and Matt Duncan on bass, have recently finished recording the follow up to Volume I and the early results are positive. Shawn reports that “the recording has gone balls out and I couldn’t be happier with the energy”, while Matt adds that although he has “recorded with Jeff and Shawn a million times and know what to expect from them, they always seem to surprise me in some way or another.” The album is currently being mixed and produced by Joey Vera (ARMORED SAINT, FATES WARNING) who comments that “the band was very well rehearsed, which made for a smooth session. I’ve known Jeff, Shawn and Matt for quite some time now and it was really like a bunch of buddies just hanging out. Their recent addition of Rowan is a great shot in the arm, as he brings in unexpected influences, which makes for a more interesting sound in the end.”

The band is excited for fans to hear what the newest DC4 music has to offer and the enthusiasm shows through. Comments Matt, “I hope the fans hear the hard work and also the fun it was to make this record. We worked hard and laughed our asses off!” As for when the new music will be ready, Joey says that “We tracked 10 songs but we’re concentrating on 3 songs on a full production level. We’re hoping to have a 3 song sampler of the record by the end of the year. This is not a demo, these 3 songs will go to eleven!”

Def Leppard Will Begin Recording Their New Album In January

Jonathan Cohen of billboard.com reports:

Def Leppard will begin recording its next studio album in January at frontman Joe Elliott’s house in Dublin. Basic ideas were hashed out on the road during the band’s extensive tour in support of this year’s covers album “Yeah!,” a first for Def Leppard.

“We’ve got about five or six songs on the go, and there’ll be 11 or 12 on the final version,” guitarist Phil Collen tells Billboard.com. “We’re trying to get it out for next summer, which for us would be amazing. But we’ve never been this far along. We come off tour, wait six months, then we start writing. We’ve already got that sorted out.

Collen says the songs thus far have “absolutely” been influenced by the process of making “Yeah!,” which featured Def Leppard’s spin on songs popularized by Thin Lizzy, the Faces and Mott The Hoople. “We did that so quick,” he says. “It was raw, and it didn’t demand we sit around for months or years. That really inspired us.”

“A lot of the songs are anthemic sounding,” Elliott adds. “I wouldn’t say they could have been on ‘Pyromania’ or ‘Hysteria’ but they’re in the vein. Sonically, it’s a little more like ‘Back in Black’ than, say, ‘Hysteria.’ It’s more driving. The songs we’ve got so far are leaning that way.”

Says Collen, “It’s a rawer kind of vibe — more menacing. More of a live sound. Not too glossy.”

0 Slave to the System – S/T (Release Year – 2006)

SlavetotheSystemSlave to the System is one of the better CD’s released in 2006.

This group consists of Damon Johnson, and Roman Glick from Brother Cane, and Scott Rockenfeld and Kelly Gray of Queensryche.

I have always liked both bands, but I must admit that I haven’t been very fond of the Kelly Gray, Queensryche years.

After hearing this CD, I wonder how much Geoff Tate has been holding back Kelly, as he kicks ass on this CD. Damon Johnson and the rest of the guys are great as well. Some songs lean towards more album oriented radio friendly rock, others are a little harder. The slower tracks took two or three listens to digest, and have really grown on me. The CD does a good job of mixing the two up.

As a whole, this is a killer CD with no filler tracks. This is straight up hard rock all the way through. If you like either of the two bands, I mentioned above, you are going to like this. It may take you a couple of listens to get into this, but if you give this a chance, you will be pleasantly surprised.

This CD is one of my top picks in 2006.
