Canadian hard rockers HELIX will release their new album, “Vagabond Bones”, in Canada on November 17 via Universal/Fontana. Singer Brian Vollmer has been collaborating with Sean Kelly (CRASH KELLY) on material for the CD, which was mixed by engineer Aaron Murray.

Commented Vollmer: “On ‘Vagabond Bones’, we were working under a self-imposed deadline of having the CD out for the fall of 2009.

“The writing relationship between Sean and I developed when Sean joined the band this past spring. At the same time my writing relationship with Gord Prior came to an end as he could not commit to the project, so Sean and I began writing with each other and quickly hit it off.

“When Sean got the job as the new guitar player for Nelly Furtado, we made a pact between the two of us to finish the new CD before he had to take off on tour. We went right down to the wire last week, but in the end victory was ours and everything was finished by the time Sean got on the plane for Europe.

“We really lucked out with the talented people we were able to involve on the project. From the recording to the artwork, the team we assembled did a remarkable job on a shoe-string budget.

“I’m very proud of this piece of work. I hope the fans will enjoy it as much as I did recording it.”

“Vagabond Bones” tentative track listing (not final sequence):

01. The Animal Inside (Won’t Be Denied)
02. Go Hard or Go Home
03. Vagabond Bones
04. Monday Morning Meltdown
05. When The Bitter’s Got The Better Of You
06. Hung Over But Still Hanging In
07. Best Mistake I Never Made
08. Make ‘Em Dance
09. Jack It Up

Vollmer’s track-by-track description of “Vagabond Bones” can be found on the band’s official web site.

The classic ’80s lineup of Canadian hard rockers HELIX — Brent “The Doctor” Doerner on lead guitar, Greg “Fritz” Hinz on drums, Daryl Gray on bass, and Brian Vollmer on vocals — recently reunited and is planning to hit the road throughout western Canada in October.

Regarding his collaboration with Kelly, Vollmer previously said, “We hit it off as writers right from the start, and the tunes we’ve produced so far have been getting great feedback. I’ve been playing them not only for industry people but to fans as well. One thing for sure — whether you love or hate this CD, you’ll find it very different from anything we’ve done in the past. In particular, ‘Monday Morning Meltdown’ is a real stretch for us. It’s BEATLES/CHEAP TRICK-influenced, which led Rudy Blair of 680 News to comment to me that ‘…if he hadn’t known who it was us, he would have thought it was a young band.'”

“Writing with Sean Kelly has really brought out some of my other musical influences, like DAVID BOWIE, T. REX, and ALICE COOPER. You can hear traces of them in different songs we’ve put together.”

HELIX has been active in the past several years with several releases. The band’s most recent collection of original material, “The Power of Rock and Roll”, came out in 2007. Their latest CD, “A Heavy Mental Christmas”, was made available in all Canadian Wal-Mart stores last November and received airplay worldwide. The CD also received great reviews from the critics.

helixthepowerofrrBack in 2007, Helix released their CD “The Power of Rock and Roll”.  Those that had their 2006 disc, ” Get Up” complained that this release was nothing more than a mere reissue since it has seven of the same songs on that disc.  If you don’t own “Get Up”, you will definitely want to check out “The Power of Rock and Roll” as it definitely rocks hard.

This isn’t a terribly long CD.  The whole thing clocks in at 33 minutes.  The bonus track is a reworking of the band’s 1983 hit “Heavy Metal Love”. I have always like this song, and this version sounds as good as the original.

A quick listen to this disc, and I am quite surprised that Vollmer can still sing at this level after 35 years.  He sounds great as does the band backing him up. While Brian Vollmer may be the only original member of this band, the classic hard rock sound of Helix is in good hands with these guys.

“Fill Your Head With Rock” (what a great idea =0 ), ” The Past is Back (To Kick Your Ass) ” and “Baby Likes To Ride” are amongst my favorites on this disc.  This CD may not have the most original rock and roll you have ever heard, but it is another solid effort by Helix.

If you enjoy bands like Krokus, and AC/DC, you ought to give Helix a look. “The Power of Rock and Roll” has me looking forward to seeing the band perform at Rock Gone Wild in August. You can check out these songs and more at Planet Helix. You can purchase this CD, at this link. Check it out. You will be glad you did.

2 Rhino Bucket Added to Rock Gone Wild 2009

Blue collar. Black leather. Hard times. Three phrases that California-based Rhino Bucket use to describe their sound. Countless others have compared Rhino Bucket to AC/DC. Rhino Bucket will bring their down and dirty sound to Algona, Iowa for the inaugural Rock Gone Wild festival. The festival is slated for August 20-23, 2009. Rock Gone Wild will feature more than 50 bands on two stages over four days of hard rock and heavy metal.

Formed in 1988, Rhino Bucket took a slightly different turn from the Sunset Strip Glam craze. Instead of sleazing it up, Rhino Bucket went a little harder, a little grittier, a little more down home rock n’ roll.

Like many 80s bands, Rhino Bucket had their share of ups and downs, breakups and member changes. After a lengthy hiatus, the band reformed in 2001 eventually recording And Then It Got Ugly in 2006. Rhino Bucket have six albums in their discography – and are working on lucky number seven. The band plans to release a new disc in 2009. Rhino Bucket is Georg Dolivo (vocals, guitar), Brian Forsythe (guitar), Reeve Downes (bass) and Simon Wright (drums).

Rock Gone Wild’s exclusive ticket presale has ended. Tickets will be available to the general public in the coming weeks. To receive updates, please join www.fevertalk.net. Additionally, Rock Gone Wild fans can receive unprecedented “behind-the-scenes” updates by reading Anatomy of a Festival at www.anatomyofafestival.wordpress.com. This blog promises to chronicle the ups – and downs – of planning a major music event.

Rhino Bucket join Helix, Junkyard, Dangerous Toys and Saigon Kick to the ever-growing Rock Gone Wild roster.

Festival artists will chat online exclusively with ticket-holders. This exciting interactive experience kicks off in the coming weeks and will continue until August 2009. Brian Vollmer of Helix will participate in the first chat. Brian has performed with Helix for over 30 years and teaches vocal lessons to a wide array of students. Thanks to his musicianship, Helix has sold millions of albums worldwide. Only those fans with tickets will be able to chat with Brian.  Ticketholders will receive an email with instructions on how to access the private chat. Visit www.rockgonewild.com for complete festival information.

Rock Gone Wild will take place at the Freedom Park festival grounds, located at 2507- 160th Avenue in Algona, Iowa. While Algona is a rural community, the area is close to many hotels and both the Des Moines and Minneapolis airports are easily accessible.

Rock fans from more than 30 states and five countries have already purchased tickets. Will you be wild in August 2009?

Rock now. Rock on. Rock wild.

Dangerous Toys, Junkyard and Helix Added to Rock Gone Wild 2009

They might come from different parts of North America, but in August 2009, Dangerous Toys, Junkyard and Helix will join forces in Algona, Iowa for the inaugural Rock Gone Wild festival. The festival is slated for August 20-23, 2009. Rock Gone Wild will feature more than 50 bands on two stages over four days of hard rock and heavy metal. The festival promises four decades of rock n’ roll debauchery at its finest!

Dangerous Toys formed in Texas in 1987. They immediately impacted radio and MTV with hits like “Teas’n, Pleas’n” and “Scared.” The band has released four studio albums, a live disc and a greatest hits compilation.  The current Dangerous Toys lineup features Jason McMaster (vocals), Paul Lidel and Scott Dalhover (guitars), Mike Watson (bass) and Mark Geary (drums).

Like many bands from the 1980s, blues-based rockers Junkyard saw their beginnings in Los Angeles. Forming in 1987, the band got their start with a little cash from Geffen Records. The band made some demos and later released a self-titled debut album. Junkyard has released seven albums, including early demos, live cuts and the recent Put It on Ten and Pull the Knobs Off! The current Junkyard lineup features David Roach (vocals), Chris Gates (guitar and vocals), Tim Mosher (guitar), Todd Muscat (bass) and Patrick Muzingo (drums).

Canadian rockers Helix formed in 1974 and hit their stride in the early 1980s, releasing songs like “Heavy Metal Love” and “Rock You.” To date, Helix has well over a dozen albums to their credit. That discography will grow as Helix prepares to release A Heavy Metal Christmas in the next few weeks.  The current Helix line-up features Brian Vollmer (vocals), Paul Fonseca (bass), Jim Lawson (guitar), Rick VanDyk (guitar) and Brent Niemi (drums).

Dangerous Toys, Junkyard and Helix will join Saigon Kick on the Rock Gone Wild festival roster. Rock Gone Wild marks the only festival appearance for Saigon Kick – featuring Matt Kramer and Phil Varone – in 2009.

Rock Gone Wild artists will chat online exclusively with festival ticket-holders. This exciting interactive experience kicks off in the coming weeks and will continue until August 2009. Fans must purchase a ticket to chat with your favorite musician! Visit www.rockgonewild.com for more information.

Rock Gone Wild will take place at the Freedom Park festival grounds, located at 2507- 160th Avenue in Algona, Iowa. While Algona is a rural community, the area is close to many hotels and both the Des Moines and Minneapolis airports are easily accessible.

Both platinum and VIP seating is severely limited. Rock fans from more than 30 states and five countries have already purchased tickets. This means over half of the platinum seating area is already sold – so fans should act fast if they want to get wild in August 2009.

Rock now. Rock on. Rock wild.

1 New Video – Helix – Fill Your Head With Rock

Helix

HELIX frontman Brian Vollmer has issued the following update:

“For the past two weeks we’ve been going back and forth on the video for ‘Fill Your Head With Rock’, which we filmed right here in the back room at Planet Helix. The idea was to film it on high def in a small space to achieve a certain “look”, but after seeing the rough footage it was evident to us that our idea wasn’t working as intended. Not that the filming looked bad or that the bad didn’t perform-quite the contrary. It was more the fact that we tried to take an arena band and put it in a location which made us look small.

Initially John Hockley, who puts our stuff up on YouTube, put together a vid from my own footage that I filmed over the past couple of years with my Sony movie camera. Gord and I thought that it looked great and conveyed that feeling of ‘…being larger than life…’ that we wanted to portray to our fans. There were some things that needed to be changed however, so we set about to find more film and to effect some of the footage we already had. Amazingly, John used a $125.00 editing program to put it all together. The results speak for themselves. Expect the launch of the video Sunday night (March 30th).”
