0 Leslie West teams up with Slash and Bonamassa on “Unusual Suspects”

Leslie West, Legendary guitarist and the founder of one of rocks most influential bands, Mountain, will release a brand new solo album, ‘Unusual Suspects’, on Monday September 19th.
The album features West alongside a hand-picked line-up of the world’s finest guitar players; including Slash, blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa, Black Label Society front man and ex-Ozzy guitarist Zakk Wylde, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and Toto’s Steve Lukather.
Released by Provogue Records, the album follows the shocking news that, in late June, West underwent life-saving surgery, when his leg was amputated above the knee. While such an ordeal would surely deter lesser artists, West insisted on honouring the ‘Unusual Suspects’ album’s September release date and is gearing up for a US tour in October.

“These guys don’t just show up to play on everybody’s albums,” says West on his special guests and the album’s title. “They’re all stars in their own right, and fantastic players – everyone with their own sound and style, about as far from the usual suspects as it gets.”

1 ZZ Top – Live in Germany 1980 (2011)
The most powerful three-piece rock band from Texas, ZZ Top have released a new live CD, Live in Germany 1980. The music for this live CD was recorded long before top 40 hits and videos that shot them to fame on MTV. This CD shows the band in fine form, and shows just how powerful their earlier songs are.
Some of my favorites in this live set are “Thank You”, “Cheap Sunglasses”, “Beer Drinkers & Hellraisers”, “La Grange” The Elvis cover “Jailhouse Rock” and “Tush”. There really isn’t a band song in this awesome live set.
For a band that has been rockin’ for over 40 years, I can’t believe that I haven’t seen ZZ Top live yet. Live in Germany 1980 proves to me that ZZ Top is not only a great live band, but was highly influential on many of the bands that I listen to today. I hope that I get a chance to see them play live before they call it a day.
If you are familiar with the DVD, Double Down Live, then you already have an idea of how cool this CD is. This concert was filmed for German television’s popular Rockpalast program and released on DVD as Double Down Live in 2009. The music is now available on CD for the very first time.
If you are a ZZ Top fan, you should not miss Live in Germany 1980. It does not disappoint!

0 Billy Sheehan – Holy Cow (Release Year – 2009)
Billy Sheehan is back with a brand new solo CD. This time around Billy brought an all star cast with him. Holy Cow features Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big), Dug Pinnick (King’s X), and Ray Luzier (David Lee Roth, KORN).
I have always had a lot of respect for Billy Sheehan. He blew me away when I saw him when he was a member of the David Lee Roth band in 80’s. Since then I have always considered Billy to be one of the top bass players in hard rock. I must admit that I had low expectations with Holy Cow. I haven’t had a whole lot of luck with the solo CD’s I have picked up in the past. They are typically hit or miss, and they usually get shelved fairly quickly. I don’t think that is going to happen with Holy Cow.
Sheehan has crafted some pretty cool tunes on this disc. I wouldn’t consider Billy Sheehan a great singer but he does do good job on the tunes here. His music is far better than his vocals, and his bass work as well as guitar playing is superb on this disc.
“In A Week or Two”, “A Lit’l Bit’l Do It To ‘Ya Ev’ry Time” (with Billy Gibbons on guitar), and “A Bloodless Casuality’ are amongst Holy Cow’s best moments.
The instrumental tracks are better than I expected them to be. “Dynamic Exhilarator” features Sheehan’s long time Mr. Big band mate, Paul Gilbert on guitar. “Theme From An Imaginary Sci Fi” is fun, only to hear Sheehan go off on his bass.
There are a few songs that I prefer to skip through as they just didn’t do it for me. I think a couple of instrumental tracks is fine, but five is a bit overkill in my opinion.
The Bottom line: this isn’t a perfect CD by any means, but it does have some good songs and definite replayability. It is definitely a CD that will appeal to Billy Sheehan’s long time fans.

3 New Sammy Hagar CD in November

A new Sammy Hagar CD is on the way in November. XM Radio interviewed Sammy Hagar at the Rock the Bayou festival. Sammy mentioned that he plans to release a new CD in November. Some songs are already done, including one that Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top sings on.
Sammy mentioned that he has a couple of unreleased songs from his project, Planet US that he plans to put out, Peeping Through A Hole and Vertigo. I am not sure if this will be on the new record or released seperately.
