0 Brian Robertson – Diamonds and Dirt (2011)

If you are a fan of Thin Lizzy, then Brian Robertson is no stranger to you. This former Thin Lizzy/Motorhead guitarist has finally released his first solo album after years of being absent from the music scene. On his new album, Diamonds and Dirt, Robbo has enlisted an all-star crew to help form one hell of a good debut record.  The line up for this CD is Ian Haugland (Europe) on drums, Nalley Påhlsson (Treat) on bass, Leif Sundin (MSG) on vocals and Liny Wood on background vocals.  Many of the songs on Diamonds and Dirt were written by Brian Robertson, the late great Phillip Lynott, plus you get three cool Frankie Miller cover tunes. What this means is,  on Diamonds and Dirt you get 100 % quality music all the way through.

Brian Robertson’s guitar work shines all the way through this CD.  Hearing him play again after all of these years, makes me wonder where he has been hiding.  Robbo’s style of playing reminds me of a cross between Stevie Ray Vaughn and Peter Frampton.  He is one hell of a talented player.  Diamonds and Dirt ought to put him back in the spotlight.

The music on this CD is a blend of classic rock, blues and AOR.  It isn’t a perfect outing, but it is one entertaining listen.  The songs on this CD came from Robertson’s unreleased compositions, so I am sure that a lot of the material is fairly old, however that doesn’t make it bad.  Some of the songs remind me of a blend of Bad Company, Foreigner and  of course, Thin Lizzy.     If Diamonds and Dirt was released sooner, who knows what kind of impact it could have had on the music scene.

I am glad Robbo finally let this music see the light of day.  Hopefully, he won’t wait a long time before Robbo blesses us with another set of tunes.  Until he does, I will be enjoying Diamonds and Dirt. Check it out!

Today, sees a host of amazing rock and metal releases coming from SPV/Steamhammer.  Six albums are available today, including: VICIOUS RUMORS, BRIAN ROBERTSON, KINGDOM COME, ASSASSIN,MY INNER BURNING and ENGRAINED. Info about each release can be found below:

VICIOUS RUMORS: “Razorback Killers”

It’s Geoff Thorpe’s story of power and pain. The quest to change people’s lives with the power of metal music and the fascination of his band in 2011. The guitarist and main songwriter of American power metal act VICIOUS RUMORS says: “The older we get the more wicked VICIOUS RUMORS sound. We’ve definitely not slowed down – quite the opposite – have even more drive. Our fans won’t see a single VICIOUS RUMORS show where we don’t go to our limits and beyond.” Anybody who has been to one of the group’s gigs during the past two years knows just what he means. Thorpe’s comment not only describes his band’s concerts, but also without reservation VICIOUS RUMORS’ latest album “Razorback Killers”.  The album features ten breathtaking new songs which transport the traditional VICIOUS RUMORS sound perfectly into the present. To make a long story short: this band has never sounded more dynamic than on “Razorback Killers”.

BRIAN ROBERTSON: “Diamonds and Dirt”

It’s not the first time in the history of rock music that coincidence led to the discovery of hidden treasures: a carrier bag full of music tapes (note: tapes!) turned out to be the basis for “Diamonds and Dirt”, the first solo release by Scottish guitarist/composer BRIAN ROBERTSON. “I thrust the bag into my friend Søren’s hand and said: ‘Why don’t you listen to these some time when you’re bored. They’re a number of my previously unreleased compositions.'” Søren Lindberg from Sweden happens to be one of former Thin Lizzy/Motörhead guitarist BRIAN ROBERTSON’S closest friends and frequently works as his driver when he has equipment which needs transporting.  “He had plenty of time to listen to that pile of tapes in his truck on the way back to Scandinavia,” ROBERTSON remembers, “and he called me as soon as he reached Stockholm: ‘BRIAN, there’s some brilliant stuff on those tapes. We should make an album of them!'”

KINGDOM COME: “Rendered Waters”

It is not the success of the early days which Lenny Wolf associates KINGDOM COME with, nor earlier hits from his long-standing career. What he really cares about is the present. Is this a contradiction in view of his new album “Rendered Waters”which features eight old and three newly recorded songs? Certainly not, all eleven tracks were cut at Lenny’s Two Square Noise Factory studio in Hamburg, Germany. In particular, the new recordings of old material show KINGDOM COME’S vision of living in the here and now. “I purposely chose tracks from the very early days to show how we play, hear and feel the songs nowadays,” says Wolf. “Listening habits have changed dramatically, especially among the younger audience, which made it exciting for me to breathe new life into numbers which have not been heard for a while.”

ASSASSIN: “Breaking the Silence”

GO! FIGHT! KILL! No sound truly defines Thrash Metal more than ASSASSIN. A hybrid of Speed Thrash Metal and Hardcore splashed with a sense of humor, it grabs you by the throat and kicks your ass. Although a band photo predates the official band formation, ASSASSIN was officially formed in 1984 with the original lineup of, Robert Gonnella(vocals), Dinko Vekic (lead guitar), Scholli (rhythm guitar), Lulle (bass) and Psycho (drums).   In autumn 2010 the band signed again a record deal with the german label SPV/Steamhammer and recorded their new album with producer Harris Johns (Voivod, Kreator, Sodom). The new album “Breaking The Silence” will be released worldwide in March 2011 and ASSASSIN are back again kicking asses!!!

MY INNER BURNING: “11 Scars”

Listening to MY INNER BURNING’s powerful brand of metal, you can be certain that they have lots of triumphant victories ahead of them. MY INNER BURNING have the determination it takes, and they’re ready to present their second album, “Eleven Scars”, a surprisingly mature offering which highlights an impressive development compared to their already exciting 2009 debut. “Eleven Scars” sounds groovier and a little darker than their first self-titled release. Guitarist Torsten Sauerbrey explains the reasoning behind their darker sound “Probably the many concerts we’ve played since, and the stronger influence of our vocalist Becky, who penned the occasionally rather sinister lyrics.”

ENGRAINED: “DEEP ROOTED”

Right after the release of their 5-track EP “Anger, Roots and Rock n Roll” ENGRAINED recorded their first full length album called “Deep Rooted”.  The recording, mixing and mastering was done by Tommy Newton who is known for his excellent work with bands like Helloween, Guano Apes, Terry Hoax, UFO and many others. ENGRAINED have truly honed their sound on the new album with 13 ferocious, fluid, hard driving songs. Honest Rock n Roll with a good shot of Punk Rock.

0 AOL MUSIC HOSTING FULL ALBUM LISTENING PARTIES FOR BRIAN ROBERTSON AND KINGDOM COME

NEW ALBUMS AVAILABLE APRIL 5th VIA SPV/STEAMHAMMER

Tomorrow sees the release of two highly anticipated releases from SPV/Steamhammer.  Legendary guitarist BRIAN ROBERTSON (Thin Lizzy, Motorhead) is releasing “Diamonds and Dirt” his first solo release to date.  In addition, SPV is also releasing “Rendered Waters”, a from legendary power metallers KINGDOM COME.  AOL Music is giving people their first opportunity to hear both of these releases now at http://music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds

We should make an album of them!'”

The result is a superb album at the interface of hard rock with definite blues elements and gritty mainstream, wonderfully melodic and full of excellent guitar arrangements. In terms of compositions, the album presents a number of outstanding Robertson numbers, such as the driving title track, the truly intense “Passion”, “Texas Wind” with its wonderfully atmospheric beginning, and the powerful “Devil In My Soul” with its awesome wah-wah guitar solo. The album is rounded off by tracks from Robertson’s extremely successful collaboration with Phil Lynott during their Thin Lizzy days in the years 1974 to 1978 and his fellow-countryman Frankie Miller, with whom he recorded “Dancing in the Rain” in 1986, among others.

For example “Should I”, this time is played more slowly lending it a heavier appeal. The drums are more open and the guitars, according to Lenny, feature a more tube-oriented sound and warmer, more driving tone: “Just to give it an overall 2011 vibe. Of course, you can only change songs to a certain extent if you don’t want to lose the character and central theme of the original version.” The same goes for “I’ve Been Trying”, “Pushing Hard” and “Living Out Of Touch”. None of them have been reinvented, but all three certainly have a noticeable new approach to them. On the other hand, Lenny changed the verse of “I’ve Been Trying” completely, giving it a different arrangement, just like he transported the song “Seventeen” into the year 2011. “Seventeen” has always been kind of a key song for KINGDOM COME, yet it has never received much attention since it has a very non-commercial approach and is either loved or hated, but with the new version it will hopefully get the recognition it deserves.”

0 BRIAN ROBERTSON ALBUM ARTWORK FOR “DIAMONDS AND DIRT” REVEALED

  • February 16, 2011
  • by Rob Rockitt
  • · Entertainment · Hard Rock Music · Hard Rock News · Music

It’s not the first time in the history of rock music that coincidence led to the discovery of hidden treasures: a carrier bag full of music tapes (note: tapes!) turned out to be the basis for “Diamonds and Dirt”, the first solo release by Scottish guitarist/composer BRIAN ROBERTSON, due to be released on 28 March 2011 (Germany: 25 March; US/Canada: April 5th) on SPV/Steamhammer.

Lindberg already had a number of musicians in mind: he enlisted two of his country’s most renowned instrumentalists in drummer Ian Haugland (Europe) and bassist Nalley Påhlsson (Treat). Says Robertson: “They’re great, the best rhythm section I’ve played with since Phil Lynott and Brian Downey.” Leif Sundin (ex-Michael Schenker Group) was recruited as an additional vocalist, and the amazing Liny Wood joined the fold as backing vocalist. “It wasn’t easy to get all these extremely sought-after musicians in one place at the same time, which is why the work on “Diamonds and Dirt” took longer than originally scheduled. But it was important to us to get the best possible line-up, so we preferred to wait until they could all be there.”

“I think Phil would be proud of what I’ve done with those Lizzy songs,” says Robertson. “My guitar style is audibly stronger than it was back then when we admittedly still sounded a little wooden.” Robertson is referring mainly to “It’s Only Money” (from the 1974 recording “Nightlife”), which has received in 2011 the very polish it still lacked in the mid-1970s. The yet unreleased Robertson/Lynott co-composition “Blues Boy” and the Lizzy track “Running Back” (off JAILBREAK, 1976) present Robertson as an impressive instrumentalist. Coincidentally, the track has been recorded in two versions: “I said to Søren: ‘Let’s cut it the way I hear that number.’ So we tried several interpretations, among them a slower version, which we’ve also included on the album.” The three Frankie Miller numbers, “Mail Box”, “Do It Till We Drop (Drop It!)” and “Ain’t Got No Money”, sound equally accomplished. To keep Miller happy, former Riverdogs frontman, Rob Lamothe, was enlisted to record the latter. “I played the first version to Frankie, but he didn’t like my vocals. So we asked Rob to sing the number. Frankie was very pleased with the result.”

Rightly so, because the album with its top-notch production courtesy of Robertson, Søren Lindberg and Chris Laney fascinates from the first to the very last note. We can only hope that we will get an opportunity to see this illustrious line-up live on stage. “For organizational reasons, I have my doubts that it will be possible to get these musicians together for a full tour, but who knows: we may always turn up for a number of festival gigs this summer. I’m sure we’d all enjoy that.” So would the audience …

0 GUITARIST BRIAN ROBERTSON REMEMBERS GARY MOORE

  • February 11, 2011

NEW SOLO ALBUM “DIAMONDS AND DIRT” OUT ON APRIL 5 IN NORTH AMERICA

Legendary guitarist BRIAN ROBERTSON recently took some time out to reflect and remember former band mate and friend Gary Moore, who passed away earlier this week.

BRIAN spoke about the recording process of the Thin Lizzy “Nightlife” album and his refusal to re-record Gary’s solos:

“When I first joined Thin Lizzy and we recorded the Nightlife album, there was this track that we had to do, a song called “Still In Love With You”. As it was time to record the guitar solos I refused to replace Gary’s original solos. They were the best solos I’d ever heard at that point and I wouldn’t let anyone talk me into changing that!”

ROBERTSON reflected on just one of his memorable Gary Moore stories:

“In the early days with Lizzy we did a tour of Europe with Colosseum II, which was the band Gary was in at the time, and we did a gig in Arnhem, Holland. Gary came round my room at the hotel after the show with a crate of brandy. Needless to say, we had a great time and we ended up hosing each other down with the fire hoses in the hallway. Unfortunately the fire alarm went off and the whole hotel had to be evacuated. It was a very cheap hotel and it had lots of senior citizens living there, so all of these people had help each other out of the hotel in the middle of the night while Gazza and I stayed in the room and tried to hide. We ended up in the nick for that prank, but it was quickly sorted by our managements”

BRIAN ROBERTSON is set to release his first solo album “Diamonds and Dirt”, on April 5th in North America  on SPV/Steamhammer. The album blends hard rock with definite blues elements and gritty mainstream, wonderfully melodic excellent guitar arrangements. 2 LEGENDARY GUITARIST BRIAN ROBERTSON SIGNS WITH SPV/STEAMHAMMER

NEW SOLO ALBUM “DIAMONDS AND DIRT” OUT ON APRIL 5 IN NORTH AMERICA

It’s not the first time in the history of rock music that coincidence led to the discovery of hidden treasures: a carrier bag full of music tapes (note: tapes!) turned out to be the basis for “Diamonds and Dirt”, the first solo release by Scottish guitarist/composer BRIAN ROBERTSON, due to be released on 28 March 2011 (Germany: 25 March; US/Canada: April 5th) on SPV/Steamhammer. “I thrust the bag into my friend Søren’s hand and said: ‘Why don’t you listen to these some time when you’re bored.
