2 Vie’s Verses: Whatever Happened To Britny Fox?
While rifling through my CD/record/cassette tape/mp3/music collection this past weekend, I happened upon the self-titled debut album from Britny Fox. I quickly decided to dust the cassette off and give it a whirl in the old tape deck. Yes, I still have a cassette deck, and yes, it still works…sometimes. Fortunately, this was one of those times that it worked.
Putting in Britny Fox plastered a smile across my face and brought back a wave of memories. From 1988 – 1990, I was as obsessed with Britny Fox as I am with Pop Evil today. I thought that Britny Fox was one of the greatest bands in rock with the potential to have a huge future. The first time that I heard “Long Way To Love” on MTV, I was hooked. I picked up their debut album not long after that. Packed with gems like “Girlschool,” “Save The Weak,” “In America,” and their magnificent cover of Slade’s “Gudbuy T’Jane,” that tape was fantastic.
The band released an exceptional follow up with 1989’s Boys In Heat. This album contained two of the band’s biggest hits in their cover of Nazareth’s “Hair Of The Dog,” and the ever popular “Dream On,” which spent weeks in the top ten of Dial MTV (which was how bands got their notoriety back then). With Boys In Heat doing so well, I just knew that Britny Fox was going to take over the world. Then something happened within the band, and Dean Davidson, the band’s cherished lead singer, left. He went on to form Blackeyed Susan, while Britny Fox went out to find a new singer in Tommy Paris.
I picked up a copy of Blackeyed Susan’s Electric Rattlebone not long after its release and I loved it. I still have that on cassette to this day and that still plays as well. It was a more southern sounding version of Britny Fox, less metal, more blues, and I liked it a lot. However, when Davidson left Britny Fox, I never went back to them. The band released Bite Down Hard in 1991, but without Davidson, I didn’t bother to pick up the album. Blackeyed Susan never released another record. Their follow up album Just A Taste was recorded, but never put out, which is a shame. So what happened to these guys? Where have they been? What have they been doing? Where are they now?
Dean Davidson – Lead Vocals
After leaving Britny Fox to form Blackeyed Susan, Dean Davidson released one album with that band and recorded a second. When the music genre shifted, Davidson went silent for a while and then reappeared in 1999 when 80s metal was having a resurgence. He would go on to record solo albums, and there were rumors in 2010 that he was getting back together with Britny Fox, but that never happened. These days, Davidson is working on a new country-tinged solo album that is due out in 2014.
Michael Kelly Smith – Lead Guitar
Guitarist Michael Kelly Smith stayed with Britny Fox until the end of their run (1993) when the music scene changed dramatically. In 2003 he performed with a band called Razamanaz and released one album. Smith was involved with the production of the greatest hits and live albums that Britny Fox released, but has not done much in the field of music since his days with them.
Billy Childs – Bass Guitar
Bassist Billy Childs bounced around a lot after 2003. There were a few different lineups of Britny Fox and he was involved in them all, most recently, the 2008 (and last) Britny Fox lineup, which played several club dates throughout the US. These days, Billy Childs is the bassist in a Led Zeppelin cover band called Get The Led Out. The band still tours nationally and they have some Northeast dates scheduled for this November and December.
Johnny Dee – Drums
Drummer Johnny Dee went on to play in Doro’s touring band after the demise of Britny Fox, where he remains to this day. Dee played drums on Doro’s last two albums, Fear No Evil and Raise Your Fist and toured all over Europe and the US with the band. Dee is currently out on the road in Europe for Doro’s 30th anniversary tour.
With festivals like M3 and Rocklahoma happening annually, it would be nice to think that Britny Fox could get back together for a small tour or at least some festival performances, but that is highly unlikely. It appears that Davidson and the rest of the band still don’t speak and it is doubtful that they would be willing to put aside their differences for even one tour. That’s unfortunate, because there are still a lot of fans out there who would love to see Britny Fox play live.

2 Former Britny Fox Singer Dean Davidson Gives An Update
Hello hello everyone,
Im meeting with the folk rock americana band “The Lawsuits” hailing from Bucks County, Pa. The Lawsuits will be a big part of my New Album and New band, Dean Davidson & The Bedlam Hearts. Through November & December I’ll be laying down demos with the band before we start recording the new album “Our Unlived Life”. It’s been a pretty zig zag path for me the past two years. All that emotion will be heard for sure on the new album. So, stay tuned at www.deandavidson.com www.myspace.com/deandavidson & www.twitter.com/thebedlamhearts (my main website www.deandavidson.com has Icon Links for Twitter & MySpace)
Be well and Looking forward to the new year,
Dean Davidson
2 Black Eyed Susan – Electric Rattlebone (Release Year – 1991)
Unhappy with the direction Britny Fox was heading in, singer “Dizzy” Dean Davidson, left that group to form a brand new band, Blackeyed Susan.
From a musical perspective, Blackeyed Susan was probably a couple of steps above Britny Fox. The band had more of a bluesy rock sound in the vein of Aerosmith, that the hair metal sounds of Britny Fox. The metal screams that were commonplace on the Britny Fox albums were also gone. Dean Davidson sings in his natural voice on “Electric Rattlebone”.
Blackeyed Susan did have a song that was a minor hit called “None of It Matters”. This song incorporates a middle eastern flair in the guitar sound, which is kind of cool. Check out the video “None of it Matters” at this link.
“Sympathy” is a bluesy rocker that has a very cool slide guitar, mixed with some funky ragtime style piano playing.
“Ride With Me” reminds me a lot of the more acoustic bluesy numbers that Cinderella was doing on their album, “Heartbreak Station”.
“Old Lady Snow” is one of those songs with simple lyrics, but it is upbeat enough for it to get in your head and stay there.
“She’s So Fine” should have been a hit for Blackeyed Susan. It has catchy lyrics, good guitar work, and a very good beat. This song is one of my favorites on this record.
Even though the music on this disc was superior to anything else Dean Davidson had done previously, this album was a commercial failure. Mercury Records pulled the plug on their tour, and Blackeyed Susan crashed and burned. When this album originally came out, I expected this to be another hair metal CD, and this is nothing of the sort. I didn’t enjoy this very much back in the 90’s, but over the years, my taste has changed. I have grown to appreciate the music on “Electric Rattlebone”.
If you enjoy good bluesy hard rock, “Electric Rattlebone” is a disc you will want to pick up. This under rated gem has been out of print for years. You can find used copies of this CD, for next to nothing in the HRH music store.

0 More Britny Fox News!

BRITNY FOX has retained the new management and booking services of Lane Productions and has inked a new deal with the independent label CHAVIS RECORDS. Through these partnerships the team was able to do what was necessary and in the best interest of Billy Childs. There is nothing being handed to BRITNY FOX on a “silver platter”, “no rebirth”, no skyrocketing BRITNY FOX “back in the limelight”, “no robbing or deceiving anyone of anything”, and “no infringement upon anyones anything”. BRITNY FOX is simply moving forward as a band playing the songs BRITNY FOX is widely known for, coupled with a few that we’re not hits but represent what BRITNY FOX was, is and will continue to be.
BRITNY FOX is currently in rehearsals with new vocalist Jamie Fletcher for the upcoming 2008 tour which kicks off on March 21, 2008. Jamie was selected over several candidates. His stage presence, appeal and resume suited the position very well, but being a solid vocalist that can serve up the “Dizzy” Dean Davidson and Tommy Paris material just like it should be was the deciding factor. The team felt that it was critical to not only deliver the material as close to the original as possible, but also not to deviate from the BRITNY FOX sound that it is known for.
“I personally spoke with Tommy Paris and asked him to give it another go. Tommy has moved on and gave his blessing and best wishes. No ugliness, no negativity just simply pursuing other interests at this time. With respect to my involvement, Billy had an idea and a vision that he wanted to achieve. We had several discussions with new management and put all the cards on the table. We came up with a game plan and an agreement that was best suited for all of the parties involved. I am happy to be involved and apart of the BRITNY FOX team. – Bill Chavis – CEO/President CHAVIS RECORDS
Immediate plans for BRITNY FOX are to hit the road for the summer touring season and begin writing new material for a 2009 release. This gives the band time to gel and really focus on rebuilding, touring and reconnecting with their fans.
“I want to personally thank each and everyone who stood by me and looked out for this project. I also want to thank all of the fans and friends who emailed me and responded positively to all the negative stuff being spit out”. – Billy Childs

A Benefit For Mary Beth
March 21, 2008
Shakers Nite Club
Cambridge, OH
$5.00/ $7.00 Day of Show
Friends of Scozz Foundation
One thing about the music community is that we pull together when a friend needs our help. Scozz, the drummer for Asphalt Valentine, is currently facing some difficult challenges. His wife and love of his life, Mary Beth (aka Devon) is very ill. Aside from the obvious emotional struggles they both must be facing, the medical costs have simply become overbearing. All we can do for the emotional challenges is hope for a speedy recovery and keep them both in our thoughts and prayers. For the financial challenges, WE CAN DO SOMETHING!
From Scozz,
Thanks in advance for all of this. Things are really bad for us right now. Mary Beth has been rescheduled for aortic bypass surgery on Feb. 20th @ St. Josephs Hospital on Peachtree St. Near Northside Hospital.. She has circulatory disease. She will be in the hospital for a minimum of 5 days with the first 2 days in ICU. The doctor will perform an arterial graft to replace the closed up section that is affecting the circulation in her right leg. She faces a 6-8 week recovery time once she is released. The foundation was set up to help offset the medical costs that are not covered by my health insurance as well as help with the lost wages I have incurred while staying home to care for her.
She has not been well for close to 9 years. She has a few other things wrong with her female problem wise. Her leg problems really started to be noticeable after a fall, which she did some damage to her left foot in 2001. The pains she felt in her leg was thought to be residual of that fall, where she cut her foot and separated the tendon. She was misdiagnosed on several occasions until a foot specialist sent her to a Circulatory/Vascular specialist (Dr. Lewenstien) for a problem on her left foot where her toes looked like they were rotting off. Very painful. The proper tests were run and they determined it was vascular disease. At one point her arteries in her legs were 100% blocked in her right and 90% blocked in her left leg. She also has extremely high Cholesterol which is a contributing factor. This is odd because she is a vegetarian. The doctor determined that her condition is hereditary and rare considering her age of 42.
CHAVIS RECORDS & LANE PRODUCTIONS in association with The Friends OF Scozz Foundation announce The Benefit For Mary Beth. The benefit is on March 21, 2008 at the Shakers Nite Club in Cambridge, OH. The line up for the night will be Britny Fox, Asphalt Valentine, A Nervous Wreck, American Angel, and The Dogs Divine. Tickets are just $5.00 and ALL PROCEEDS from the night will be donated to The Friends Of Scozz Foundation.
