Cincinnati rock station WEBN conducted a very cool interview with Guns N’ Roses guitarist DJ Ashba. Want to know what DJ said about replacing Slash in Guns N’ Roses? Check out the interview here!
Nixx Sixx’s other band, Sixx A.M. is back with their sophomore effort, This is Gonna Hurt. I have been anxiously awaiting to hear the follow up to 2007’s The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack.
Once again, Nikki Sixx proves that he is one hell of a song writer. The songs, and the music on This is Gonna Hurt, seems like a step above the stuff found on the band’s debut. This is Gonna Hurt feels like a more cohesive album. The Nikki Sixx narratives are gone. This CD is 100% rock although the style on the CD bounces around quite a bit. This CD is packed with that tunes that are sometimes modern rock, sometimes alternative, sometimes heavy but always good.
The album opener and title track “This is Gonna Hurt” is one of the heavier numbers on the disc. This is a super catchyrocker that ought to be the second single off of the CD.
The tempo slows down a little for “Lies of the Beautiful People” (see video below) but this hit worthy tune does a good job maintaining the pace of the album. This is a great song that is going to get a ton of airplay.
“Are You With Me Now” is a very infectious modern rock tune. The lyrics will have you signing along in no time.
When I hear the huge voice of James Michaels on “Live Forever”, it blows my mind that this guy wasn’t a force in music before Nikki Sixx found him. His vocals are quite impressive on “Live Forever”.
“Smile” is a slower number that find its way on some Pop/Rock stations. This song has an almost Beatle-esque quality to it, with some incredible music that includes piano/keyboards and violin.
Would you believe the song “Oh My God” has an almost Journey like sound to it? Listen to guitar riffs on the song, and see what I mean! DJ Ashba sounds like he was inspired by Neal Schon on this tune.
Overall, I am very pleased with the music on This is Gonna Hurt. DJ Ashba plays his ass off on this CD, and James Michael’s voice is as strong as ever. If Nikki Sixx keeps releasing material this strong, he may find even more success in the band that bears his name. This is definitely a CD worth picking up. Check it out!

Guns N’ Roses is proud to announce that guitarist n’ songwriter Dj Ashba has joined the band for an upcoming tour. Ashba, who officially replaces current NIN guitarist Robin Finck, is best known as co-founder of hard rock bands Sixx AM and Beautiful Creatures.
“Dj’s a gifted, energetic guitarist that Guns N’ Roses is proud to have on board!!” exclaims Axl Rose. “We’re very excited to have the opportunity to work together. Guns’ radar has silently been aware of Dj’s presence for quite some time! He brings a fresh approach to our particular brand of mayhem expanding the tapestry of Guns N’ Roses live. Once Dj’s name was in the hat, the hat disappeared!!” “It’s an honor to have the opportunity to be a part of a band that I have always loved and respected,” said Dj Ashba. “I’m looking forward to working with Axl, who is not only one of the few great front men of our generation, but a true artist.” Dj Ashba co-wrote and co-produced Motley Crue’s latest album “Saints of Los Angeles,” which garnered a 2008 GRAMMY nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance, as well as co-wrote and co-produced the Sixx AM album “Heroin Diaries.” Robin continues to be part of GN’R, by virtue of Guns’ history and his involvement in Chinese Democracy.
Now, one step closer to the abyss, Ashba joins a band who’s all time roster is nearly as long as it’s founder Axl Rose’s rap sheet!
Sixx A.M. has released their third video in support of their CD, “The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack”.
Check out the video “Tomorrow” below!
One thing that was pretty amazing at Cruefest, was how fast they tore down and set up the stage for the next band. If you were late getting to Cruefest, chances are you missed Trapt, and Sixx A.M. Luckily, I was there right at 5 for Cruefest, and I didn’t miss a minute of the action.
Sixx A.M. took the stage, and myself by surprise. I have listened to the Heroin Diaries several times since its release, so I am pretty familiar with all of the songs, but I have never seen singer James Michael, or guitarist DJ Ashba live.
Sixx A.M. didn’t have the longest set, but the played all of the popular songs off The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack including, “Tomorrow”, “Accidents Can Happen”, “Pray For Me”, and closed out their set with “Life Is Beautiful”. I knew they would be good, but I didn’t expect to like them as much as I did. Sixx A.M. was excellent live, so good in fact that Nikki Sixx may have to do a second album with this group.
Nikki Sixx is obviously the star in this band. At no point did he try to upstage Michael or Ashba, in fact, I thought for Sixx A.M. being a side project that they appeared to have pretty good chemistry as a band. I would definitely pay to see these guys again! Sixx A.M. was certainly a highlight in Cruefest.
The following clip is Sixx A.M. performing “Life is Beautiful“. Enjoy!
Nikki Sixx’s side project, Sixx A.M. released their album, The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack in 2007.

Today marks the return of the Rocklahoma Review Series (2008 Edition). For the next 17 Saturdays, I will be reviewing CD’s by some of the bands that are on the Rocklahoma 2008 roster. There are over 84 bands this year, so their are plenty to choose from. Hopefully this experience will be as eye opening for everyone as it was for me this week. You see, I have not played the debut CD by Beautiful Creatures in two or three years. This band fell off of my radar for a while until the recent Rocklahoma announcement. I decided to give this CD a spin, and was pleasantly surprised with what I found here.
Beautiful Creatures is the band led by Bang Tango singer Joe Leste and Sixx A.M. guitar player DJ Ashba. I guess with Joe Leste as the front man for Beautiful Creatures, I expected this band to be some kind of a Bang Tango clone. I do here some small similarites to Bang Tango, but this CD reminds me a whole lot of the 1994 Motley Crue CD with John Corabi. Quite a few of the songs on this disc, would not have sounded out of place on that record. The tunes on this record, probably have more in common with 90’s grunge, than they do with 80’s glam, but the hard rocking guitar solos are unmistakably 80’s.
My favorite cuts on this disc are Wasted, Ride, Kick Out, and Kickin’ For Days. This is an album that doesn’t really have any filler cuts, although some songs are stronger than others. Most importanly, this disc rocks hard and does it well. After hearing these songs again for the first time in years, I would bet that they would translate well live. This should be a treat to hear for those that will be in attendance for the Sunday afternoon show at Rocklahoma. If you aren’t familiar with Beautiful Creatures music, be sure to watch their videos below, and check out their myspace page!
