DeepPurple2012

The title of our new album is still a question mark to all of us… We have recorded a new album, and it’s a fantastic collection of songs.

At the moment that’s the only affirmative point we can offer…”
-Ian Gillan, December 2012

Eight years after the release of Rapture Of The Deep, Deep Purple, one of the most important and influential British rock bands of all time, have confirmed the release of a new album featuring brand new studio material. This yet-to-be-titled album will be released stateside on April 30, 2013.

Following various songwriting sessions in Europe, the band recorded and mixed the album in Nashville with famed producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd’s The Wall, Alice Cooper and many others), creating a work that blends the classic 70s Deep Purple spirit with modern production and a progressive mindset. A few working song titles, recently revealed by Ian Gillan are “Out Of Hands”, “Uncommon Man” and “Hell to Pay”.
Deep Purple’s record company earMUSIC will reveal details about the new album as soon as they become available, on a dedicated website where all band members will also be able to post and interact with the fans: www.deeppurple2013.com

1 Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi Are WHOCARES — New 2CD Out August 28

Reuniting for the first time since their collaboration on Black Sabbath’s 1983 Born Again album, Deep Purple´s Ian Gillan and Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi took everybody by surprise in 2011 when they released the charity singles: “Out Of My Mind” and “Holy Water.” For the recording of these songs, the two rock legends called a few friends, asking for some “help.” Jason Newsted (Metallica), Jon Lord (Deep Purple, 1941-2012), Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden), and Linde Lindström (HIM) completed the supergroup WhoCares.

Now, “Out Of My Mind” and “Holy Water” will be featured in a special 2-disc set of rarities and recordings culled from the careers of Iommi and Gillan. The WhoCares double-CD will be released in North American on August 28. [MSRP $17.98]. Pre-orders available through Amazon.com.
Amongst the tracks are the two original WhoCares songs, Deep Purple’s unreleased studio jam “Dick Pimple,” a song from Repo Depo (a band Ian Gillan formed before the Deep Purple reunion) which never released an official song before this CD. Also included is “Zero The Hero,” from the aforementioned Black Sabbath Born Again release (which is the only album to feature Gillan on lead vocals), as well as two unreleased songs from Tony Iommi featuring Glenn Hughes.
The “Out of My Mind” and “Holy Water” singles were a joyful and inspired moment from two musicians with nothing to prove, willing to support music where music is considered a luxury. The spark to bring Iommi and Gillan in a studio together again was to finance the rebuilding of a music school in Armenia they had visited together on various occasions in past years.
“As I said once in the song ‘Razzle Dazzle,’ it’s a real fine line between an orgy of destruction and a wonderful time,’” states Gillan. “The destruction of conformity in this case: some of these pieces never really fitted into their contemporary program and got sidelined or forgotten, and some of the album tracks never had much exposure. As the track listing for this album came together, I noticed many of the titles had character similarities: a combination of freshness as they finally felt the sun on their backs and rebellion in a ‘yeah told you so’ kind of way. And that adds up to a wonderful time and more money for the music school we are building in Armenia.
“The ad-hoc benefit WhoCares band,” continues Gillan, “was a band put together by Tony Iommi and myself on a flight home from Yerevan, where we’d been deeply humbled by the honor and expectation bestowed upon us. Well that’s it really, in a nutshell, so to speak, what more can I say? It’s all there in the music.”

The release of this very special 2-CD set is a must for all Deep Purple fans and fans of hard rock.

0 EAGLE DIGS DEEP INTO DEEP PURPLE WITH FOUR LIVE DOUBLE-DISCS ON AUGUST 16:

  • August 4, 2011

Scandinavian Nights, In Concert 1970-1972, Live in London and MK III: The Final Concerts

Eagle Rock Entertainment is proud to announce the August 16 release of four double-discs of the deepest of Deep Purple’s onstage action:  Scandinavian Nights, In Concert 1970-1972, Live In London and MK III: The Final Concerts. [MSRP $13.98]

Scandinavian Nights, from 1970, features the most classic of Purple lineups, lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, vocalist Ian Gillan, drummer Ian Paice and bassist Roger Glover. Recorded for Swedish radio while on tour in support of their groundbreaking In Rock album, the band, a well-oiled machine of epic proportions, rips through elongated versions of “Speed King,” “Into The Fire,” “Child In Time,” “Wring That Neck,” a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” (as a Paice drum solo), “Mandrake Root” and “Black Night.”
The same lineup In Concert 1970-1972 recorded two shows for the BBC. The 1970 gig is four songs stretched out to almost 50 minutes in true DP style like no other band ever — “Speed King,” “Child In Time,”  “Wring That Neck” and “Mandrake Root.” In the ’72 concert, they performed every song off their classic Machinehead album (except “Pictures Of Home”) including a 21-minute version of “Space Truckin’.
This is the first time Live In London has been released in the United States on CD. Complete with new frontman David Coverdale and new bassist Glenn Hughes (essentially giving the band two lead singers), the band were back home in London in 1974 performing in support of the Burn album. The band, indeed, burned through the title track, “Might Just Take Your Life,” “Lay Down Stay Down,” “Mistreated,” “Smoke On The Water” and, on Disc #2, “You Fool No One” and “Space Truckin’.”
A year later, with no idea its lead guitarist and co-founding member Ritchie Blackmore had already decided to leave the band, Deep Purple, with Coverdale and Hughes now solidly entrenched and performing magnificently, embarked on a European tour in support of Stormbringer.  MK III The Final Concerts excitingly documents Blackmore’s swan song with the band on “Burn,” “Stormbringer,” “Gypsy,” “Lady Double Dealer,” “Mistreated,” “Smoke On The Water,” “You Fool No One,” “Space Truckin’,” “Going Down/Highway Star,” and alternate versions of “Mistreated” and “You Fool No One.”

0 Who Cares – Out of My Mind / Holy Water (2011)

It is not very often when a piece of music has me excitedly breaking out some old CD’s in my collection, but that is exactly what the new CD single from Tony Iommi and Ian Gillan has done.  The two new songs “Out of Mind” and “Holy Water” are splendid metal offerings from Iommi, Gillan and friends to help raise funds  for the rebuilding of a music school in Gyumri, Armenia.

I enjoyed both of these songs greatly, and had only left me wanting more.  I had to break out my copy of the 1983 Black Sabbath classic Born Again, which featured Ian Gillan on vocals.  It isn’t a CD that I listen to very often, but this new CD single shows that there may be something more to a collaboration between Gillan and Iommi.  These elder statesmen of hard rock and metal have put together two very solid tracks, which are worth every penny of your hard-earned money.

Who Cares?  Tony Iommi and Ian Gillan cared enough to create this music for a good cause, and we the music fans get to reap the benefits.  Sure, I wish there were more tracks, but the two songs here are excellent.  Don’t miss this!

Debut Two-Song Digital Single To Benefit Armenian Music School May 10; CDE To Follow June 21

Black Sabbath lead guitarist Tony Iommi and Deep Purple lead singer Ian Gillan have reunited for the first time since working together on Sabbath’s 1983 Born Again album. The resulting two-man project, WhoCares, features an all-star array of talent.  All of the money generated from the digital Internet release of the two-song single on Tuesday, May 10, will benefit the music school of Gyumari, Armenia, an area which never recovered from a massive 1988 earthquake. [MSRP $2.99]
“Out Of My Mind” features Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord, Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain, bassist Jason Newsted and HIM guitarist Mikko “Linde” Lindström. “Holy Water” features Gillan and Iommi with guitarists Steve Morris/Michael Lee Jackson, drummer Randy Clarke, bassist Rodney Appleby and keyboardist Jesse O’Brien.
Additionally, on June 21, earMusic, in cooperation with Eagle Rock Entertainment, via its subsidiary Armoury Records, will release the two songs plus a 30-minute documentary showing the involvement over the years of Gillan and Iommi to the Armenian cause, on a special CDE (enhanced CD).  [MSRP $6.98]
Gillan told www.blabbermouth.net that the idea came when he and Iommi flew back from the area together “after being inspired by the enthusiasm of everyone there to get this thing done,” adding, “it was brilliant working with Tony again after all these years. He makes life easy for a singer. The other guys need no introduction, do they?”
“Some 20 years ago,” adds Iommi, “when the call came, I thought, `well, at least I’ve helped,’ but it was going to Armenia and seeing the actual devastation caused by the earthquake that really made me realize that funds were still needed.”

Ian Gillan is one of the greatest rock singers of all times and is renowned as a member of Deep Purple, as well as bands named after himself. Despite Deep Purple have often been called “Heavy Metal Pioneers”, Ian Gillan never felt he really belonged to that music category. His all time music inspiration and heroes are names such as James Brown, Ray Charles, Little Richard and the rockers of the 50s. It‘s with no surprise that all true Ian Gillan coinosseurs will find all these influences on “One Eye To Morocco”, the new studio album written and recorded with the line up that made “Live in Anaheim” one of the best live albums Gillan has ever released.

A 100% rock album, “One Eye To Morocco” will conquer new and old Gillan fans with an impressive collection of songs showing a big variety of moods and colors. From classic Gillan rock and roll, to the arabic sound of the title track, soulful ballads and bluesy mid-tempos.

1 Ian Gillan – Gillan’s Inn (Dual Disc) (Release Year -2006)

  • · CD Reviews A-H

gillansinnI think most hard rock fans are going to find something to like about Gillan’s Inn. This is a great guitar rock album, and Ian Gillan sounds like he just started singing for Deep Purple yesterday. The production quality on this disc is nothing short of superb!

Unchain Your Brain , Hang Me Out to Dry and Speed King features the lightning quick Joe Satriani on Guitars. Simply Amazing!!

When A Blind Man Cries features Jeff Healey on guitars. This guy may be blind, but he is one hell of a guitar player! GREAT STUFF!

Sugar Plum has this guitar riff that is just infectious. Trashed features the heavy guitar of Tony Iommi.

Smoke on the Water…sure you have heard it a thousand times, but this one includes Steve Morse on guitars and the Violin of Sim Jones. You have to hear it to appreciate how good this sounds.

Men of War and Loving On Borrowed time also features the excellent guitar work of Steve Morse.

The Bonus track I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight with Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott to me is the weakest track on the disc.

As whole, every song is well produced and sounds great. The Dual Disc CD features a DVD side with the making of this disc. There are some cool videos and some bootleg Deep Purple material on here. The DVD also includes the whole album in 5.1 surround sound and stereo.

If you are a fan of Deep Purple, Ian Gillan or hard rock in general, you need to get this!
