Dream Theater’s Jame LaBrie is back with a powerful new studio album effort entitled “Impermanent Resonance”, to be released on July 29th, 2013 in Europe
and August 6th, 2013 in North America via InsideOutMusic.The new album’s dynamic opening track, “Agony”, is now available to be checked out via the website of UK’s Metal Hammer magazine here:
James LaBrie comments about “Agony” as follows:”I am completely over the top with ‘Impermanent Resonance’ and here is its first single, ‘Agony’. I am more than sure that you will be banging your head and your blood will be coursing through you like jet fuel. As far as I am concerned this is only a teaser to 11 other tracks that will take you for a dynamic and emotional ride.

Matt Guillory, LaBrie’s songwriting partner for over a dozen years now and keyboardist / background vocalist on “Impermanent Resonance” added as follows:
“Stylistically, I think ‘Agony’ is an interesting blend of melodic death metal and pop – from the riffing and blast beats interspersed in the intro, to where it really opens up melodically in the chorus. I like the pop-influenced interplay of the lead vocal and the keyboards that occur in the verse and chorus. This was a real fun collaboration with Peter Wichers. It’s got a little bit of everything.”
Next to James LaBrie and Matt Guillory, the line-up on this diverse and extremely entertaining new album also features Marco Sfogli from Italy on guitar, Ray Riendeau (Halford, Machines of Loving Grace) on bass and Dream Theater audition’s finalist Peter Wildoer (Darkane, Majestic, Arch Enemy, etc.) from Sweden on drums, making it the same line-up for the group as on the previous, much acclaimed album, “Static Impulse”, from 2010. Furthermore, former Soilwork guitarist Peter Wichers was also added to the fold for songwriting and guitar recording contributions.
“Impermanent Resonance” was once again mixed and mastered at Sweden’s Fascination Street recording studios (Kreator, Opeth, Paradise Lost, etc.) with Jens Bogren and this time also Tony Lindgren, while artwork duties were handled by Gustavo Sazes / abstrata.net (Arch Enemy, Firewind, Kamelot, etc.).

0 JAMES LABRIE – New album release announced Cover artwork unveiled!
After his much acclaimed “Static Impulse” release in 2010, Dream Theater frontman James LaBrie returns with a powerful new studio album entitled “Impermanent Resonance,”to be released August 6in North America and July 29 in Europe via InsideOutMusic.
“Impermanent Resonance” was once again conceived with LaBrie’s songwriting partner for over a dozen years, Matt Guillory. Guillory not only took the leading role in composing the material, he also handled all of the keyboards and
background vocals.
The album’s lineup is intact from the previous recording, featuring Marco Sfogli from Italy on guitar, Ray Riendeau (Halford, Machines of Loving Grace) on bass and Swedish drummer Peter Wildoer (Darkane, Majestic, Arch Enemy, etc.), who was a finalist in the Dream Theater drum auditions. Additionally, former Soilwork guitarist Peter Wichers came into the foldto contribute songwriting and studio guitars.
“To me this album incorporates and continues with the styles and musical direction that we have created with the previous releases,” says James LaBrie. “The difference being that the music on this disc is to me a true telling of the songs evolving and taking on a sense of identity that is every band’s ultimate goal. It is powerful, memorable, hook-driven and above all extremely musical. It shows how the writing and the band itself have matured. I truly feel that this is our quintessential album.”
“Impermanent Resonance” was once again mixed and mastered at Sweden’s Fascination Street recording studios (Kreator, Opeth, Paradise Lost, Symphony X) with Jens Bogren and this time also Tony Lindgren. Visually, Canadian LaBrie hooked up with Gustavo Sazes / abstrata.net (Arch Enemy, Firewind, Kamelot, etc.) to capture and translate the album’s atmosphere into the striking artwork.
Some of the songs included on “Impermanent Resonance,”which combines the heaviness of Gothenburg-sound influenced progressive metal with the catchiness of contemporary rock, are “Agony,” “Back On The Ground,” “Undertow,” “I Got You” and “Amnesia.”

LABRIE states: “The track ‘Mislead’ was a sleeping giant for Matt Guillory (keyboards) and I. Most of the parts came quickly, but seemed to be missing the key elements or ingredients that would keep you in its grip the entire ride. We kept playing with the interaction of the instruments and vocal melodies. Matt kept working his magic with the interplay of the keys, bass, guitar and drums. It wasn..’t until I was almost ready to lay my vocals that Matt and I felt it had all that it needed, but we wouldn..’t see the proof in the pudding until after both mine and Peter..’s vocals were laid.
“Peter..’s vocals were done before mine which enabled me to feed off his energy and really nail the attitude and personality needed for this song. What began as one of the maybe, maybe not tunes for this disc. It ultimately ended up being one of our favorites. The lyrics I wrote deal with the ever present corruption and oppression in far too many governments. I know lighten up right, I..’m light; it..’s them who need to chill out. Enjoy.”
Guillory further comments: “In the writing process, ‘Mislead’ ended up being more of a challenge than the other songs. It..’s got all the right ingredients though; dense syncopated riffing, atmospheric keyboards, melodic hooks, and over-the-top vocals. In the end, we..’re really pleased with the way it turned out. I absolutely love the contrast between James..’ crystal-clear lead vocal delivery and Peter..’s melo-death screams...”
The much anticipated new full-length offering, Static Impulse, also marks LABRIE’s first solo effort in over five years and is sure to please his legion of diehard fans, as well as win over many new devotees in the process. Static Impulse also features the immensely talented longtime songwriting partner and keyboardist Matt Guillory. Another notable performance is Peter Wildoer from metal titans DARKANE on drums and screaming vocals. The group is rounded out by Marco Sfogli on guitars and Ray Riendeau on bass. Static Impulse was mixed and mastered by the renowned Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia).

3 Dream Theater – Images and Words (Release Year – 1992)
I still remember the day when I heard Pull Me Under on the radio for the first time. I was out of town for business in Detroit. The DJ didn’t say who it was, but I was immediately blown away. I had to know who this was, and quickly.
Images and Words was the release that opened up the world of progressive metal for this listener. At the time of this album’s release, glam metal was on the decline. Progressive metal offered listeners something new, and Images and Words, quickly put Dream Theater on top of the progressive metal scene.
Images and Words is Dream Theater’s second release, and the first for singer James Labrie. The first CD, When Dream and Day Unite, didn’t take off, and the band’s singer Charlie Dominici was fired. The band didn’t start gaining success until James Labrie joined the group.
I did not start paying attention to this genre of metal until I heard this album. Images
and Words offers a somewhat unique style that was certainly ground breaking to me, and many others. The musicianship on this record is nothing short of stellar. John Petrucci showcases his awesome guitar skills, and Mike Portnoy proves to be one of the best drummers out there. James Labrie’s great voice ties it all together for one nice package.
There are a few songs that blend well with mainstream metal including Pull Me Under, Another Day, and Take the Time. It isn’t until later in the album where you find gems like Metropolis Part 1, a nine minute monster of a song that seems to fly by. Dream Theater can craft heavy tunes, and turn on a dime, and create music that is AOR quality. They back up their tunes with incredible live performances. For this listener, Images and Words is still an extraordinary listening experience. This release is essential for all progressive rock and metal fans.
