1 M3 Day 1 Review – Warrant

The Robert Mason fronted Warrant has never disappointed me live, and Warrant’s performance at M3 was no exception.  I thought Warrant’s sound was exceptional on the chilly Friday evening.  I don’t know if it was the bigger stage, the better sound quality, or what the factor was, but seeing Warrant on the big stage was awesome.  I thought this was the best Robert Mason has ever sounded with the band.  Much like Jetboy’s & L.A. Guns set, Warrant’s set was far too short.  While they had a little more time than the other bands that preceded them, there were far too many songs they didn’t get to do that I would have liked to hear.

Warrant’s set list went something like this: “Sure Feels Good to Me”, “Big Talk”, “Sex Ain’t Love”, “Down Boys”, “Sometimes She Cries”, “Dirty Rotten Stinking Filthy Rich”, “Heaven”, “Life’s A Song”, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, and “Cherry Pie”.  Needless to say, they covered all of their hits, and played a couple of the new songs off of Rockaholic.  Their albums Dog Eat Dog, Ultraphobic and Born Again were ignored, and that was mildly disappointing.  In a short set like this one, I completely understand why they chose the songs they did. The fans want to hear the hits, and that is exactly what Warrant did.  The played ’em, and never sounded better in my opinion.

After seeing Warrant’s short set at M3, I would love to see these guys headline somewhere on their own.  Wouldn’t it be cool if Warrant would add a couple of Lynch Mob tunes to the set?!  It would be cool to hear them do, “Jungle of Love” or “Tangled in the Web” live.  One can dream right?!  Anyway, I loved Warrant’s M3 performance, and I can’t wait to see Warrant live again.

2 Warrant – Rockaholic (2011)

I have been anxious to hear new Warrant music, with Robert Mason on vocals ever since I first saw them play live with Mason singing back in 2009.

When the band debuted a couple of their new songs at the M3 Rock Festival in 2010, I knew we were going to have another cool Warrant album on our hands before long.

With no surprise, Rockaholic has exceeded my expectations by far.

There are several great tunes on Rockaholic, and way too many to talk about individually.  The songs that are amongst my favorites are “Sex Ain’t Love”, “Dusty’s Revenge”, Life’s A Song”,”Show Must Go On” and “The Last Straw”.

This is easily Warrant’s strongest album since Dog Eat Dog, and surpasses the previous effort Born Again with Jamie St. James by a mile!

Robert Mason is a fantastic vocalist, and some may argue, “Yeah, but he ain’t Jani Lane”, but quite honestly, I think he is a better hard rock singer overall.  That isn’t a dig against Jani, I like him a lot too.  I believe Robert Mason has the voice that is going to keep Warrant around for many more years.  Rockaholic is great beginning to the Robert Mason era of Warrant, and is a CD you should be checking out!

0 Warrant – Ultraphobic (Release Year – 1995)

Warrant has reunited with their original lineup intact in 2008, and will
be one of the headlining acts at Rocklahoma on Saturday, July 12th.

As much as I like the initial releases with the original lineup, I decided to dust off one of Warrant’s later discs, Ultraphobic, which featured Kingdom Come’s Rick Steir on guitar and James Kottak on drums.

I remember when I first heard that a couple of former Kingdom Come guys were joining the band, I was hoping that Warrant might try to approach a classic rock/ Zepplinesque update to their music. That was not the case at all with Ultraphobic.

In 1995, Hair metal was about as popular as diarrhea, but Warrant tried to forge ahead with a darker, grungier sound in an effort to stay relevant in the music scene. The sound of Ultraphobic seemed to follow the heavier sound of the 1992 Warrant record, Dog Eat Dog.

The guitars are are tuned down, and a little grungier on Ultraphobic. For me, this style of guitar playing does not suit Jani Lane’s voice well, and this album suffers as a result.

There are a couple of highlights on this disc. Undertow, isn’t too bad, and Crawl Space is pretty cool. I kind of like the title track, Ultraphobic as well.

Chameleon is a song that would have sounded better if Warrant just stuck to their tried and true sound. The deeper guitar sounds mess up, what could have been one of the better Warrant tracks. There are some cool guitar parts, but this song scream redo.

I have to applaud Warrant for trying to stay relevant in the music scene (although some might argue that they never were relevant). Ultraphobic isn’t a total departure from their signature glam metal sound, but I didn’t care for the varied guitar sounds on this disc. (What was the purpose of that drill sound on Ride #2)

With the classic lineup of Warrant back together, they could rearrange some of the songs on Ultraphobic, and quite possibly turn them into new hits. This isn’t Warrant’s best work, but it isn’t their worst either. This is a middle of the road album, that isn’t as good as the first three discs the band released. Warrant fans will still want to pick this up. All others may want to preview this album on Amazon.com, before buying.

5 Warrant – Born Again (Release Year – 2006)

Warrant - Born AgainWhen I saw that the new Warrant CD was out, I was a little hesitant about picking this up. I didn’t really enjoy the last couple of releases by Warrant, and I was afraid that this CD would be like the last two instead of the initial albums that made me love this band.

At no point was Jamie St. James a deterrent for me at all. I liked Jamie in Black ‘N Blue and I always thought that band was underrated. The last couple of discs with Jani Lane didn’t set my world on fire, so why not give Jamie a chance.

Thankfully, Born Again is a nice surprise! This CD has the vibe of the first 3 CD’s and is the best thing the guys have done since Dog Eat Dog.

Some could argue that the music is a little dated. I would argue, hell yes, its 80’s Hard Rock, and it still sounds great in 2006. I love this stuff! Why didn’t Warrant do this sooner?

Jamie St. James is a great addition to this band, and the return of Joey Allen has helped to strengthen the Warrant sound!

There are plenty of songs on here to like. My personal favorites are Devils Juice, a song that sounds like it could have been on DRFSR. I also like the rocking Dirty Jack, and Bourbon County Line. Angels is a pretty good song as well.

The amazing thing is, the whole vibe of this CD sounds like Warrant in their heyday, and that is hard thing for any band to reproduce. With each successive listen this CD has gotten better. The guys in Warrant have crafted a very enjoyable disc.

The future is certainly bright for Joey Allen, Erik Turner and company.

Here is the video for Bourbon County Line. I think if you like this song, you will enjoy this CD. I know I did!
