Eagle Rock Entertainment/earMUSIC releases Concerto For Group And Orchestra
on September 25th, 2012

~The first studio recording of Jon Lord’s groundbreaking meeting of rock and classical music~
On September 25th, 2012, earMUSIC, the Hamburg-based rock label part of Edel Group, and Eagle Rock Entertainment will release the first studio recording of Jon Lord‘s groundbreaking meeting of rock and classical music – Concerto For Group And Orchestra. This will be released as a CD, CD/DVD (audio DVD in 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound), and digitally. [MSRP $13.98 for CD, $9.99 Digital, $19.98 for CD/DVD]

“Over these last years since leaving Deep Purple, I’ve played it over 30 times with different orchestras and conductors all over the world, and, of course, in 2000 I did it well over 30 times with Purple on the Concerto tour, so I’ve been honing the piece live on stage, and I’ve had the opportunity to change things in the score that weren’t sounding quite right. It is therefore a marvellous and exciting prospect to have the definitive recording of the definitive version of the score.” – Jon Lord, May 2012
Jon Lord recorded the rhythm section – Guy Pratt (Pink Floyd, Madonna) & Brett Morgan (Jon Anderson, Sting) and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (with whom Jon had recorded twice before) in June 2011 in Liverpool, under conductor Paul Mann. The production then moved to Abbey Road Studios in London to record additions from such noted artists as Iron Maiden‘s Bruce Dickinson  (on vocals with Steve Balsamo and Kasia Laska) and Joe Bonamassa, Darin Vasilev and Steve Morse.
Happily, Jon got to hear and approve the final mixes a few weeks before he passed away.

The family and earMUSIC decided to proceed with the release of the album in September as scheduled, as this seemed the best way to celebrate and pay tribute to Jon and his beautiful music. Thus this superb studio recording of Concerto For Group And Orchestra is exactly the way Jon wanted us to hear it and will now hopefully become part of Jon’s legacy for generations to come.
JON LORD
(1941-2012)
With his legendary blues-rock sound, Deep Purple’s founder/organist Jon Lord has influenced decades of rock musicians. He is with no doubt the pioneer of fusing rock and classical/baroque forms and became one of the most important composers of the last few decades.
Jon Lord co-wrote many of Deep Purple’s legendary songs including “Smoke On The Water” and played with many bands and musicians throughout his career (Whitesnake, Paice Ashton Lord, George Harrison). Best known for his orchestral work Concerto For Group And Orchestra first performed and recorded at Royal Albert Hall with Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969, conducted by the renowned Malcolm Arnold – a feat repeated in 1999 when it was again performed at the Royal Albert Hall by the London Symphony Orchestra and Deep Purple.
Jon’s solo work was universally acclaimed when he eventually retired from Deep Purple in 2002 but he continued to tour the Concerto around the world to sell-out crowds and standing ovations.

One of the greatest hard rock musicians to ever grace the keyboard passed away today. Former Deep Purple keyboardist suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism today after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Jon was 71 years old.

We will never forget his awesome playing with Deep Purple and Whitesnake. Our condolences go out to Jon’s family, friends and former band mates.

0 EAGLE TO RE-RELEASE DEEP PURPLE KEYBOARDIST JON LORD’S 1976 SOLO ALBUM SARABANDE

  • August 17, 2011

On August 23, Eagle Rock Entertainment will re-release longtime Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord’s 1976 orchestral Sarabande album. A delectable slice of exotica, Sarabande is the culmination ofLord’s fascination with symphonic rock over the previous eight years. As his third solo album, Lord, with the help of the Hungarian Philharmonic as directed by Eberhard Schoener, crafts an intricate and complex all-instrumental web of musical adventure. [MSRP $13.98]
The eight tracks—“Fantasia,” “Sarabande,” “Aria,” “Gigue,” “Bouree,” “Pavane,” “Caprice” and “Finale”—clock in at 50 minutes with “Gigue” and “Bouree” each over 11 minutes long. “Bouree,” a Lord original, is not to be confused with Bach’s similarly titled piece. “I wrote that while living in America,” Lord told a Romanian journalist in Bucharest 2009. “It was inspired by Hungarian composer Bela Bartok’s `Romanian Dances.’” (The original bouree was a dance popular in Spain in the 17th Century.) (Mike found this online) “Gigue” is the most “rock” of the cuts, featuring a sizzling electric guitar solo over a rampaging rhythm track. “Pavane” contains a beautiful Spanish-styled acoustic guitar intro before Lord comes in with a bluesy yet softly meditative piano. “Finale” ends things in slam-band style, the orchestra firing on all cylinders.
Musicians used on Sarabande include bassist Paul Karass, percussionist Mark Nauseef, guitarist Andy Summers (prior to forming The Police) and drummer Pete York. Lord, who co-produced the album with Martin Birch, plays the Hammond B-3 organ, piano, clavinet and synthesizer.
The album was recorded between September 3 and 6 at the Stadthalle Oer-Erkenschwick in a small town near Dusseldorf in Germany using a mobile recording studio. Considering the whirlwind schedule of Deep Purple in 1976, it’s a wonder the adventurous musician had any time at all for this grandiose project!

Former DEEP PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord has posted the following message on his website today:

“I would like all my friends, followers, fans and fellow travelers to know that I am fighting cancer and will therefore be taking a break from performing while getting the treatment and cure. I shall of course be continuing to write music – in my world it just has to be part of the therapy – and I fully expect to be back in good shape next year.

God bless and see you soon, Jon.”

Lord’s webmaster states: “May we also, at Jon’s request, ask if everyone could please respect his need for privacy so that he can spend time with his family (and his music). Thank you.”

2 Deep Purple – S/T (1969) Reissue (2011)

In 2011, Eagle Rock Entertainment has released not one, but all three of the Deep Purple CDs with the Mark I lineup. Deep Purple’s self titled album was the least successful album of the Mark I lineup.  The end result was the band shifting to a heavier sound, and eventual joining of Ian Gillan and Roger Glover.

The lack of chart success is by no means a reason to not check this CD out.  There are a bunch of interesting moments such as the epic twelve-plus minute song “April”, the rockin’ psychedelic jams of, “The Painter”, “Why Didn’t Rosemary?” and “Bird Has Flown”, plus the original released single “Emmaretta”.

If you like bonus tracks, this re-issue has four of them to sink your ears on. You get three versions as originally performed on the BBC, the other is a B-side version of the song “The Bird Has Flown” that was originally found on the B-side of the “Emaretta” single.

If you are a rock fan that loves to hear deep cuts from bands that rarely ever get radio play, you are going to love this album.  The self titled album may have caused changes in the Deep Purple lineup, but it is interesting listen, and one should be in every Deep Purple fan’s collection.

0 EAGLE DIGS DEEP INTO DEEP PURPLE WITH FOUR LIVE DOUBLE-DISCS ON AUGUST 16:

Scandinavian Nights, In Concert 1970-1972, Live in London and MK III: The Final Concerts

Eagle Rock Entertainment is proud to announce the August 16 release of four double-discs of the deepest of Deep Purple’s onstage action:  Scandinavian Nights, In Concert 1970-1972, Live In London and MK III: The Final Concerts. [MSRP $13.98]

Scandinavian Nights, from 1970, features the most classic of Purple lineups, lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, vocalist Ian Gillan, drummer Ian Paice and bassist Roger Glover. Recorded for Swedish radio while on tour in support of their groundbreaking In Rock album, the band, a well-oiled machine of epic proportions, rips through elongated versions of “Speed King,” “Into The Fire,” “Child In Time,” “Wring That Neck,” a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” (as a Paice drum solo), “Mandrake Root” and “Black Night.”
The same lineup In Concert 1970-1972 recorded two shows for the BBC. The 1970 gig is four songs stretched out to almost 50 minutes in true DP style like no other band ever — “Speed King,” “Child In Time,”  “Wring That Neck” and “Mandrake Root.” In the ’72 concert, they performed every song off their classic Machinehead album (except “Pictures Of Home”) including a 21-minute version of “Space Truckin’.
This is the first time Live In London has been released in the United States on CD. Complete with new frontman David Coverdale and new bassist Glenn Hughes (essentially giving the band two lead singers), the band were back home in London in 1974 performing in support of the Burn album. The band, indeed, burned through the title track, “Might Just Take Your Life,” “Lay Down Stay Down,” “Mistreated,” “Smoke On The Water” and, on Disc #2, “You Fool No One” and “Space Truckin’.”
A year later, with no idea its lead guitarist and co-founding member Ritchie Blackmore had already decided to leave the band, Deep Purple, with Coverdale and Hughes now solidly entrenched and performing magnificently, embarked on a European tour in support of Stormbringer.  MK III The Final Concerts excitingly documents Blackmore’s swan song with the band on “Burn,” “Stormbringer,” “Gypsy,” “Lady Double Dealer,” “Mistreated,” “Smoke On The Water,” “You Fool No One,” “Space Truckin’,” “Going Down/Highway Star,” and alternate versions of “Mistreated” and “You Fool No One.”

0 Who Cares – Out of My Mind / Holy Water (2011)

It is not very often when a piece of music has me excitedly breaking out some old CD’s in my collection, but that is exactly what the new CD single from Tony Iommi and Ian Gillan has done.  The two new songs “Out of Mind” and “Holy Water” are splendid metal offerings from Iommi, Gillan and friends to help raise funds  for the rebuilding of a music school in Gyumri, Armenia.

I enjoyed both of these songs greatly, and had only left me wanting more.  I had to break out my copy of the 1983 Black Sabbath classic Born Again, which featured Ian Gillan on vocals.  It isn’t a CD that I listen to very often, but this new CD single shows that there may be something more to a collaboration between Gillan and Iommi.  These elder statesmen of hard rock and metal have put together two very solid tracks, which are worth every penny of your hard-earned money.

Who Cares?  Tony Iommi and Ian Gillan cared enough to create this music for a good cause, and we the music fans get to reap the benefits.  Sure, I wish there were more tracks, but the two songs here are excellent.  Don’t miss this!

1 Ian Gillan and Tony Iommi Come Together Again In WhoCares

Debut Two-Song Digital Single To Benefit Armenian Music School May 10; CDE To Follow June 21

Black Sabbath lead guitarist Tony Iommi and Deep Purple lead singer Ian Gillan have reunited for the first time since working together on Sabbath’s 1983 Born Again album. The resulting two-man project, WhoCares, features an all-star array of talent.  All of the money generated from the digital Internet release of the two-song single on Tuesday, May 10, will benefit the music school of Gyumari, Armenia, an area which never recovered from a massive 1988 earthquake. [MSRP $2.99]
“Out Of My Mind” features Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord, Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain, bassist Jason Newsted and HIM guitarist Mikko “Linde” Lindström. “Holy Water” features Gillan and Iommi with guitarists Steve Morris/Michael Lee Jackson, drummer Randy Clarke, bassist Rodney Appleby and keyboardist Jesse O’Brien.
Additionally, on June 21, earMusic, in cooperation with Eagle Rock Entertainment, via its subsidiary Armoury Records, will release the two songs plus a 30-minute documentary showing the involvement over the years of Gillan and Iommi to the Armenian cause, on a special CDE (enhanced CD).  [MSRP $6.98]
Gillan told www.blabbermouth.net that the idea came when he and Iommi flew back from the area together “after being inspired by the enthusiasm of everyone there to get this thing done,” adding, “it was brilliant working with Tony again after all these years. He makes life easy for a singer. The other guys need no introduction, do they?”
“Some 20 years ago,” adds Iommi, “when the call came, I thought, `well, at least I’ve helped,’ but it was going to Armenia and seeing the actual devastation caused by the earthquake that really made me realize that funds were still needed.”

3 Deep Purple – Burn (Release Year 1974 – Remastered 2004)

deeppurpleburnNovember 2008 marks the 34th Anniversary of Deep Purple’s 8th Album, “Burn”.  This disc features the MKIII lineup of Deep Purple with David Coverdale on Lead Vocals, and Glen Hughes on Bass.

Just looking at the band roster for this album, I shake my head with the crazy amount of talent that this band had.

“Burn” was the beginning of a bluesier sound for Deep Purple, and this new direction was reportedly one of the reasons for Ritchie Blackmore leaving the band.  Nonetheless, “Burn” is a very important part of Deep Purple and hard rock history.  This album introduced David Coverdale to the world of hard rock, and for that I will always be forever grateful.

The title track “Burn” is easily one of the best Deep Purple songs, and top hard rock songs of all time.  The mixture of Coverdale’s and Hughes vocals on this track are awesome. Not only are the vocals great, but Ian Paice may have laid down the best drum beats of his life.  Jon Lord’s keyboards really drive this song as well. Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar riffs are fantastic.classicmetalreviewssmall

While the song “Burn” is my defacto favorite, I enjoy listening to this entire disc.  There is no doubt that this disc was highly influential on a large number of musicians. It is amazing how good this disc sounds when played loud today.  Each member of this band is extremely proficient in the instruments that they play, and were easily some of the best hard rock musicians of this 70’s hard rock era. The music just shines when blasted through your stereo speakers!

On the 30th Anniversary Remastered edition, there are 5 bonus tracks added to this disc. “Coroniaras Redig” which was originally only available as a “B – Side” track is one of the bonus tracks, as well as remixed versions of “Burn”, “Mistreated”,”You Fool No One”, and “Sail Away”.

Sometimes in order to see what direction hard rock music is heading in, you have to go back and listen to the bands that help form it.  It doesn’t get more classic than Deep Purple’s “Burn”.
