6 Nelson – Lightning Strikes Twice (2010)
It’s been years since Nelson has released any new material and even longer since they’ve had a radio hit (1991 to be precise). So, why would the band think that after all this time, they would be able to release a brand new album that fans would find relevant and want to add to their music collection? The answer is simple. Nelson still has talent. They proved that with their new release, Lightning Strikes Twice (due out in February in the US, available now in Europe). Lightning Strikes Twice is the perfect complement to After The Rain, even though it is several years (and several albums) removed from the Nelson debut.
Matthew and Gunnar Nelson are still a talented pair of twins with their father’s (Ricky Nelson) blessed ability with the gift of music. After several years away from the studio, the twins decided that it was time to record some new material and release it to the public. Whether they’ve been sitting on this material for years, or recently wrote it with a new album in mind is hard to tell, but one thing’s for certain – the material is excellent.
Officially billed as the sequel to 1990’s After The Rain, Lightning Strikes Twice is a true return to that era of good time, happy, rock and roll. It’s a return to a style of music that didn’t take itself too seriously and only cared about having a music party with a great groove. Lightning Strikes Twice has accomplished this feat with relative ease. Both Matthew and Gunnar sound incredible. Their voices have not aged over the years and there is no hint that either of them lost their ability behind the microphone.
Gunnar’s talent with the guitar is still fascinating. The solos on Lightning Strikes Twice are rich and deep, and while the basic structure of the songs can sometimes be “cheesy,” it’s that kind of corny that we are looking for to rescue us from the layered, over thought, overly produced hard rock of today. Gunnar and his guitar bring it back to the simplicity of yesteryear.
Thematically, Lightning Strikes Twice builds on the similar ground that produced Nelson’s chart topping debut album. Broken hearts, lots of parties, and the chivalrous, “boy rescues girl from bad relationship” are all present and accounting for. Sappy, romantic lines textured with high wailing guitar solos drench this record throughout. Boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, boy wants girl in the worst way, boy doesn’t know how to tell girl he loves her… the list goes on and on. If you enjoyed (or still enjoy) After The Rain, then you are going to love Lightning Strikes Twice.
While the album is not groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, Lightning Strikes Twice is more about the fun factor. If you want to revisit the late 80s/early 90s without having to get nostalgic or find your own flux capacitor, listening to Lightning Strikes Twice is the best way to do it. Chock full of nothing but fun and happiness (even on the sad songs), this is a terrific album that you should get your hands on.

1 Frontiers Records to Release Two NELSON Catalog Family Jewels: “Before The Rain” Demo Songs for “After The Rain” Album and “Perfect Storm – After the Rain World Tour 1991”
Frontiers Records is pleased to announce the European release on December 3rd of two (2) NELSON albums: “Before the Rain” the demo collection of songs that secured their recording deal with Geffen Records in 1990 and “Perfect Storm – After the Rain World Tour 1991” live concert album. A North American release will follow in February 2011, as a complement to the release of NELSON’s brand new original album “Lightning Strikes Twice”.
“Both of these extraordinary albums provide a NELSON time capsule,” reflects Gunnar Nelson. “From the early demo recordings on ‘Before the Rain’ to the rare live tour recordings on ‘Perfect Storm’, the music on these albums offers a unique glimpse of our early career.”
“These two NELSON albums are indeed newly unearthed roots of the NELSON family tree,” adds Matthew Nelson. “They both offer valuable insight to what makes our current sound what it is by way of an amazing journey back in time as we were first putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together.”
The phenomenal success of NELSON’s 1990 debut LP “After The Rain” did not happen overnight. It came after years of hard work that are documented in the “Before the Rain” album, a release that tells the story of twins Matthew and Gunnar Nelson and their five year musical journey (from 1986 to 1990) to reach the Rock N’ Roll Promised Land.
In 1986, after writing songs with Dweezil Zappa for his debut LP “My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Momma” and writing and recording the title cut for the film “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” under the band name Power Tool, Matthew and Gunnar Nelson decided they needed to hone their songwriting craft and learn from experts. They started with writer/producer Jack Ponti in New Jersey and recorded the songs they wrote that year with friends that eventually became the band Skid Row. Next, they journeyed to Australia to collaborate with Little River Band’s hit writer Graham Gobel and other writers for two months Down Under. A subsequent 3-month stay in the U.K. to write with hit makers Adrian Gurvitz and Argent’s Russ Ballard followed.
Though elements from those experiences and sessions would wind up in later attempts, NELSON finally hit musical pay dirt writing songs in a bedroom in Pacific Palisades California and recorded them in a 16-track demo studio in a converted garage in the San Fernando Valley with a then unknown writer/producer named Marc Tanner.
The results are what can be heard now on “Before the Rain”. These are the original demonstration recordings that caught the attention of A&R legend John Kalodner in late 1989 and scored Nelson a recording contract with Geffen/DGC Records which led to eventual sales of more than 3,000,000 copies of “After The Rain” and all the success that followed, including a World tour with over 300 concerts.
NELSON’s live line-up included some incredible virtuoso musicians such as Bobby Rock on drums, Brett Garsed on guitar, Paul Mirkovich on Keys and vocals and the addition of Joey Cathcart on vocals and second lead guitar. NELSON provided 4-part harmony, stellar musicianship, veteran showmanship, twin frontmen, and most importantly – great songs. NELSON played venues ranging in size from 1,200 to 60,000 seats between 1990-1992 from New York to Tokyo, sharing the stage with some other great bands with some strong openers, including House Of Lords, Tyketto, Enuff Z’nuff, Cinderella and Lynch Mob.
Amazingly and sadly, throughout the 3-year phenomenon of “After The Rain”, none of the tour’s concerts were ever filmed in their entirety. “Perfect Storm” live audio recordings are all that remain to document the height of NELSONMANIA for posterity. If you were there you are sure to remember how you felt that night experiencing the magic of the “After The Rain” tour in person. If you weren’t, you can be transported back in time now through this amazing live album.

Frontiers Records are very excited to announce the signing of American rockers Nelson for a brand new Rock album – set to be titled “Lightning Strikes Twice”. The label will also release a Nelson live album recorded during the “After the Rain” tour and the original “After the Rain” demos which include some unreleased gems.
Right now the Nelson’s are hard at work in the studio working on the new album. “After the Rain” was the hit debut multi-platinum album from the band led by Matthew and Gunnar in the early 1990s. They zoomed to number one with their hit song, “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection,” had three Top 10 singles, four #1 MTV videos, five Top 40 Billboard Hits and became massively popular overseas. Every magazine from Rolling Stone to People did cover stories, and the twins performed on television shows like “Late Night With David Letterman” and “Saturday Night Live.” Critics tended to unfairly overlook Nelson, however, because of the brothers’ pin-up good looks… but that didn’t stop millions of fans from ‘getting’ what all the excitement was about.
With the rise of grunge rock in the mid-90s, pop music grew dark and foreboding. Matthew and Gunnar chose not to compromise their positive, drug-free posture to suit the trend. Matthew and Gunnar have rare insights into what it takes to earn longevity in the entertainment world. They continue the inspiring story of a most remarkable show business family. Their grandparents, Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, achieved immortality with “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” the longest-running live action sitcom in television history. Earlier, the couple had enjoyed big band success and had scored a number one hit in 1934.
Ricky Nelson emerged from the TV series’ popularity to establish himself as one of the most important rock artists of the ’50s and ’60s with 60 million career sales and three number ones of his own. So, with Matthew and Gunnar’s “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection”, the Nelsons landed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the only family to reach number one record status in three successive generations.

6 Monster Ballads Xmas – (Release Year – 2007)
Before 2006, the only band hard rock fans had to turn to at Christmas Time for harder edged X-mas music was Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
In 2006, Twisted Sister released their Christmas Album, and now in 2007, the fine folks at Razor & Tie Records have released a Christmas Compilation CD with some of the biggest stars of the 80’s Hard Rock Era.
Monster Ballads XMas is a tasty feast of reworked Christmas classics, and a song with a unique twist from Danger Danger. Every song on this disc is highly enjoyable, at least until you get to Faster Pussycat’s Silent Night, which is awful.
If you need a disc to get you in the mood for the holiday season, this is the one to pick up. There are only 23 shopping days left before X-Mas. Don’t miss out on this record!
