0 DAILY SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED FOR PAUL GILBERT’S GREAT GUITAR ESCAPE
DAILY SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED FOR
PAUL GILBERT’S GREAT GUITAR ESCAPE
JULY 9-13, 2012 AT FULL MOON RESORT IN BIG INDIAN, NY
FEATURING GUEST INSTRUCTORS INCLUDING
Guthrie Govan, Tony MacAlpine, Chris “Kid” Andersen, Scotty Johnson and Sam Coulson
The daily schedule for Paul Gilbert’s Great Guitar Escape is now available. Full details are listed below and can be viewed at: http://www.greatguitarescape.com/schedule.html.
The first annual Paul Gilbert’s Great Guitar Escape–featuring acclaimed guitarist Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big, Racer X)–will take place July 9-13 at Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, NY. Guitar players of all ages, levels and styles are invited to join Paul Gilbert and other expert musicians for this experience focused on the techniques, styles, and life of the modern working musician.
Paul’s musicianship was praised in the January 2012 issue of Guitar Player magazine. Writer Matt Blackett noted, “His sense of melody, composition, and humor in his solos is world class, and his chops and execution—which have always been off the freaking hook—just keep getting better.”
Here are comments from some of the instructors for Paul Gilbert’s Great Guitar Escape:
Paul Gilbert:
“When I was in high school, I would look ahead to every summer vacation and think, ‘This summer, I’m really going to get better.’ Those summer days were a chance to take my extra time and focus it all on the guitar. The result was noticeable bursts of improvement in my technique, my ability to improvise, and my ability to write songs. These musical leaps always seemed to happen when I could remove the distractions of daily life and spend hours getting deeper into the instrument. With the help of the teachers at The Great Guitar Escape, and the stunning location of the Full Moon Resort, I know that you will take similar leaps yourself…from “instant gratification” techniques and phrases, to musical ideas and philosophy to last you into the future… Let’s make this summer the one where you take your guitar playing and musicianship to a new level. I’ll be practicing my guitar until I see you there!”
Guthrie Govan (The Aristocrats, Dizzee Rascal, Asia, The Fellowship, The Young Punx):
“I’m flattered and honoured that Paul Gilbert invited me to be involved with his Great Guitar Escape – and I must say I’m looking forward to it immensely. There’s something very cool about the idea of guitar players getting together in a pleasantly tranquil location to celebrate their chosen instrument…and Paul‘s roster of tutors encompasses an impressively diverse range of playing styles, so this promises to be a musically mind-expanding experience for everyone who attends. Most pleasing!”
Tony MacAlpine (CAB, Planet X):
“The Great Guitar Escape is an excellent way to learn and interact with professional guitar players and an even better way to have a super time in a great environment where improvement is the goal!”
Chris “Kid” Andersen (Rick Estrin and The Nightcats, The Terry Hanck Band, Charlie Musselwhite, Elvin Bishop):
“I am very proud to be part of Paul Gilbert’s Great Guitar Escape. If there are any guitarists out there who couldn’t pick up a thing or two from the incredibly diverse lineup of instructors who will be at their beck and call during this week, I can only assume that they are busy doing some incredibly well-paying gig, or that they are contractually obligated to do something to pay off their debt to Satan that week. Regardless of whether you are a shredder, jazzer, rock god in training, funkazoid, bluesman or a chicken-picker, you are going to have a great time and get a chance to meet up, learn from and jam with some people that’ll fit your taste and make your every day of this experience. Personally, I am eagerly anticipating seeing Guthrie Govan doing an impression of me! ”
Scotty Johnson (Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Paul Gilbert, Robben Ford’s Fords and Friends, The Ford Blues Band, The Blindside Blues Band):
“I’m thrilled to be a part of this landmark event. Clinics by day, jamming every night, throw in the beautiful scenery and this is as close to heaven as a guitar player can get!”
Sam Coulson (UK guitar virtuoso):
“I am looking forward to this July’s Great Guitar Escape with even greater anticipation! It makes me extremely proud to be teaching and playing alongside my fellow contributors. It is my belief that everyone attending will find themselves in a magnificent environment to soak up all the musical ideas they possibly can. And furthermore, what a great location to do so in. The amazing beauty of upstate New York will be the perfect place to stand up next to a mountain and chop it down with the edge of your hand! Needless to say I am thoroughly excited to perform and teach at Paul Gilbert’s Great Guitar Escape!”
Kelly Lemieux (bassist for Goldfinger, Electric Love Hogs, 22 Jacks, MD.45, King of Clubs, Fear):
“What an amazing thing to be a part of. I’m sure this will be a great learning experience for everyone involved. I can’t wait for this summer! I’m shopping for bug repellent right now!”

4 Video – Mr. Big – Green Tinted Sixties Mind

No, it isn’t a new clip, but I am very excited about seeing Mr. Big in less than two weeks. “Green Tinted Sixties Mind” is a pretty cool tune in my opinion. I am hopeful that this is one of the songs in the Mr. Big set list at the M3 Rock Festival.

The original (and now reunited) line-up features vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert, bassist Billy Sheehan, and drummer Pat Torpey. The quartet produced numerous hit songs that ranged across a wide array of rock genres, including the ubiquitous “To Be With You,” which was a Billboard Hot 100 #1 single in 15 countries for weeks, propelling the band to huge international success and record sales in the multi-millions.

4 Mr. Big – What If… (2011)
The album cover really says it all. It depicts a flying pig, which indicates when fans thought that a fully reunited Mr. Big would release a new record. Much to their surprise, the band did reunite with all of the original members, and returned with one rocking record. What If… is the first album with all of the original bandmates since 1996. That’s quite a lot of time gone by. Mr. Big makes up for it in a big, big way, with a solid release that is ear pleasing and juice squeezing!
One point of amazement is how solid and sharp Eric Martin’s voice still sounds. Even after rocking the scene for more than three decades, his vocal prowess would put most (younger) modern rock singers to shame. Martin’s ability with his pipes is clearly evident and decorates What If… with class, making it a noteworthy record, not some lame reunion rehash that tends to happen when 80s hair metal bands “reunite”.
Slapping the bass like it’s the late 80s all over again, Billy Sheehan still has a unique, undeniable style. His funk-o-matic, slap bass, party sound is still going strong and even more enjoyable than can be remembered. What If… gives Sheehan a chance to really show off his talent while not stealing the spotlight entirely. That is a big part of what makes Mr. Big’s latest album so enjoyable.
Paul Gilbert is definitely back at home with Mr. Big. His guitar work never sounded better and his tantalizing solos were all crafted with an elegance meant to compliment Billy Sheehan’s bass playing like no other guitarist can. It’s a true win for the fans to see these wizards back in action again. The finger picking exchange and solo trade off, follow the leader, of guitar and bass on “Around The World” make this album worth the money spent to own it. It’s an amazing moment of musical record and one that demands repeat listens. Without a doubt the best track on What If… and one of the best songs in Mr. Big’s career.
While What If… may not contain a monster hit like “To Be With You” or “Green Tinted Sixties Mind” what is apparent is the fact that Mr. Big has released a record of solid tracks that all have merit. What If… is an album that not only feels right mixed in with the other glam bands, it also fits in with mainstream radio and modern rock releases. The album was well thought out, well performed, and well recorded. Mr. Big has a big hit in What If… as long as they can get a little bit of promotion behind the record. Long time fans are going to love this record. For those of us that may have forgotten all about Mr. Big, it’s time to pay them another visit.

The term “Super-Group” describes a band rising out of two of the most creative bands of the past 30 years: YOSO is formed out of TOTO’s brilliant lead vocalist Bobby Kimball and the creative force of former YES members, Tony Kaye and Billy Sherwood, thus equalling the magic of YES with the voice of TOTO. However, YOSO is much more than a combination of two classic rock groups. The band’s debut album “Elements” will debut this Fall in the USA on Frontiers Records. This long awaited release comes with a bonus live CD where the band plays some old and new classics. Their musical blend presents a fascinating combination of the sound of YES (“90125″/”Big Generator” era) and TOTO, with a very interesting and original sound that truly encompasses the styles.

3 Shred Guitar Master PAUL GILBERT To Release 3rd Guitar Instrumental CD
FUZZ UNIVERSE on SHRAPNEL RECORDS out AUGUST 3RD
Paul Gilbert unleashes his 3rd instrumental masterpiece on Shrapnel Records, August 3rd to the world. “FUZZ UNIVERSE is my third guitar instrumental album,” explains Gilbert. “Being a fan of pop music and rock bands, I am a reluctant convert into the art of instrumental rock music. But after touring with Joe Satriani’s G3, I witnessed firsthand the power of the electric guitar to take center stage and rock the audience. Playing my guitar-driven songs live was a blast! This discovery led to a huge increase in my touring as a solo artist. In the last couple of years, I’ve played nearly 150 shows all over the world, with my guitar leading the way.”
FUZZ UNIVERSE title is inspired by Gilbert being so immersed in the world of guitar it made him realize that he lives in a FUZZ UNIVERSE. “Every generation of guitar players has their own terminology for the rock guitar sound: Distortion, Overdrive, Gain, Crunch, Saturation, Drive etc. For me, the word is FUZZ”
Gilbert’s extraordinary talent of arranging/composing lends to the new music’s fresh melodies for songs that shows his true diversity and only in Gilberts words will you understand:
“On FUZZ UNIVERSE, I think I’ve taken a giant step closer to the ultimate rock guitar sound and playing of my dreams. I’ve used many of my signature techniques from RACER X and MR. BIG, but twisted them into new chords, grooves, and emotions.
As always, my influences are diverse and not what you might expect from a “heavy metal” artist. While I was writing the songs for FUZZ UNIVERSE, I was immersing myself in Bulgarian Female Choir music, Baroque lute and violin pieces, Johnny Cash songs about trains, cows, mules, and mining coal, the Bee Gees, and Ronnie James Dio. I mix all this into my head, and out came endless new ideas for my guitar to chew on.
After several months of being locked in my writing room, I gathered my touring band together and headed to the studio. Jeff Bowders played drums. Craig Martini played bass. Emi Gilbert (my wife) played keyboards. And I bent the guitar strings until I couldn’t play anymore.
As usual, there are no dramatic stories here. No heroin overdoses, motorcycle accidents, celebrity divorces, or band-member boxing matches. The emotion, drama, and power are all in the music. That is the universe that I want to live in”
Paul Gilbert is regarded internationally as one of the greatest players in the industry. Starting his recording career with Shrapnel Records as a teenager in the late 80’s, Gilbert remains one of the most active guitarists from the original shred guitar scene. 3 Rob Rockitt’s Top 13 of 2009
It seems like every year I put together a top list at Hard Rock Hideout, it becomes a harder task. In 2009, there was a crazy amount of excellent releases, and choosing the best ten was a daunting task to say the least. It was too hard to pick ten, so of course, I had to add some additional releases to my top list. The following releases are my top of 2009. All of these are worth picking up, and I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase any of these a second time. Check them out and see what you think!
#13 Shake City – S/T
Eonian Records has released quite a few undiscovered gems in 2009. Their best release of 2009 is easily Shake City. Shake City features the original singer of Warrant, Adam Shore. I don’t know why Adam left Warrant, but the fates should have been kinder to his band Shake City. If this CD would have been released twenty years ago, this disc could have easily gone platinum. It is better than many of the hair metal releases of the late 80’s. It is a crime that this band didn’t get the mainstream success of their peers. If you are a hair metal fan, you need to find this CD now. You wont be disappointed.
#12 Papa Roach – Metamorphosis
Papa Roach started introducing songs from Metamorphosis into their live sets in 2008, and as a result, I was familiar with several of the tunes by the time this CD was released. In my opinion, this is the strongest Papa Roach CD to date, with several hit worthy tunes. A worthy pick up for the modern rock fans out there.
#11 Cheap Trick – The Latest
I must admit that I have never been the biggest Cheap Trick fan over the years, but I can not deny how good their latest CD, The Latest is. While this may not be the most rocking CD of 2009, it does have some fun rockers, and is quality music all the way through. Robin Zander still sounds great after all of these years. This is a must own CD for Cheap Trick fans, all others ought to give it a shot.
#10 Chickenfoot – S/T
This is another CD that I didn’t really know what to expect. Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony have been playing together in Van Halen for years, but how would this new band work out with Joe Satriani and Chad Smith? Satriani’s playing on this CD is great, and when he does cut loose, he doesn’t over shadow the rest of the band. Overall, Chickenfoot is a supergroup that could have some legs. I hope these guys stick around for a few more releases. Van Halen’s other half still delivers.
#9 The Answer – Everyday Demons
The Answer’s debut CD Rise was one of my favorites of 2007. I had high expectations for their U.S. Debut, Everyday Demons. Luckily, it did not disappoint me in the least. Everyday Demons is powered by Zeppelin influenced rockers “Demon Eyes”, “On and On” “Walkin’ Mat”. The band couldn’t have asked for a bigger tour to be on in 2009. Opening up for AC/DC has gained them a ton of new fans. I can’t wait to see what the band has in store for us next. The only thing I didn’t like about Everyday Demons was cover art.
#8 Steel Panther – Feel the Steel
Steel Panther could be the greatest hair metal parody band of all time. Feel the Steel is packed full of tongue in cheek lyrics that many folks may find offensive. You can’t deny the stellar musicianship of these California rockers. I had the opportunity to see the band play at M3 earlier this year, and they did not disappoint. When is the U.S. Club tour guys?
#7 Charm City Devils – Let’s Rock N’ Roll
Who would have thought that drummer John Allen would front a new kick ass rock and roll band in 2009? I didn’t at all. I have been rockin’ with CCD’s debut CD since its release. This is quality hard rock all the way through. In case you missed it, Charm City Devils had a pretty big year with their opening slot on the 2009 Cruefest. I am still hopeful that they will do a club tour, (and break out some Child Play tunes in their set).
#6 KISS – Sonic Boom
Sonic Boom is the first KISS CD in a long time that I have been able to listen to, all the way through without skipping a song. While I don’t consider this CD their best, it is definitely in their top ten, if not top five CD’s of all time. I didn’t expect this CD to be much. Sonic Boom was one of 2009’s biggest surprises.
#5 Coldspell – Infinite Stargaze
When I first heard the demo tracks from Coldspell in 2008, I about crapped myself. I couldn’t wait to hear Coldspell’s debut CD. I have played this CD over and over again in 2009, and will continue to do so for years to come. This is melodic rock at its finest.
#4 Winger – Karma
Holy Crap?! I get the feeling that Kip Winger and Reb Beach were pissed off when they wrote this record. This is easily the heaviest Winger album to date. Reb Beach unleashes his fury on his six strings, and Karma shines as a result. The songs aren’t all heavy, but they are all top quality. I am hopeful that Kip and company will tour for this album in 2010. Great Stuff, and worthy to be in anyone’s collection.
#3 Black Robot – S/T
Black Robot – I had no expectations when I first heard Black Robot’s self titled effort. I figured any band with former Buckcherry members would probably rock, but I had no idea that I would enjoy this CD as much as I have. “Cocaine” is easily the best cover song I have heard in 2009. Black Robot
gets the nod for best new band of 2009. If you missed this CD when it was released earlier this year, you will have to wait to grab this in 2010. The original pressing is out of print, but Black Robot will be re-releasing this CD next year with bonus tracks !!
#2 Paul Gilbert & Freddie Nelson – United States
United States has been my feelgood CD of 2009. Paul Gilbert’s guitar work is quite impressive, and Freddie Nelson’s mimicry of Freddie Mercury is pretty incredible. Once I started playing this, I couldn’t stop. Absolutely fantastic music!
#1 The Last Vegas – Whatever Gets You Off
The Last Vegas has been rocking hard since 2003, but their 2009 CD, Whatever Gets You Off is easily their breakthrough release. It didn’t hurt that they had a little help from Nikki Sixx, and DJ Ashba who produced this disc. I still don’t understand why this band didn’t get the nod for Cruefest last summer. They seemed tailor made for that festival but the promoters didn’t ask for my advice. Whatever Gets You Off is crazy good. Apologize might be the biggest power ballad of this decade (no I am not kidding). This is another great party CD, and easily my favorite of 2009.

0 Paul Gilbert & Freddie Nelson – United States (2009)
A CD that I have not mentioned soon enough at Hard Rock Hideout, is United States from the duo of Paul Gilbert & Freddie Nelson. This is some of the most inspired playing hat I have heard from Paul Gilbert in quite some time. Gilbert’s fretwork is nothing short of amazing on this CD. While United States could have fallen short with a bunch of mindless guitar noodling, it simply does not. Gilbert’s solos are absolute perfection, and are enhanced by the amazing vocals of Freddie Nelson.
I do not know where Paul Gilbert found Freddie Nelson, but this guy is the most incredible new singer I have heard in quite some time. There are times throughout United States where Nelson sounds a lot like Queen’s former front man, Freddie Mercury (R.I.P.). He doesn’t come out sounding like a complete Mercury clone. He has his own sound, and his vocals are nothing short of fantastic.
This CD has an interesting Yin and Yang factor to it. Paul Gilbert’s playing and Freddie Nelson vocals greatly complement each other. I don’t think this CD would work if either Gilbert or Nelson wasn’t on it. Either way, I hope this is a collaboration that continues down the road. This is some of Paul Gilbert’s finest work since his Mr. Big days.
United States is a one cool rockin’ CD. You will be hard pressed to find a bad tune on this one. I can’t imagine any rock fan not enjoying this CD. If you aren’t hooked by the opening cut, “The Last Rock and Roll Star”, you will be after “I’m Not Addicted”. Great vocals, and great musicianship equals a great CD.
Fans of Queen & Mr. Bigneed to check this CD out asap!. This will easily be one of my top CD’s of 2009. Do not pass go. Do not collect two hundred dollars!! Buy this one now!! Highly Recommended!

0 Billy Sheehan – Holy Cow (Release Year – 2009)
Billy Sheehan is back with a brand new solo CD. This time around Billy brought an all star cast with him. Holy Cow features Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big), Dug Pinnick (King’s X), and Ray Luzier (David Lee Roth, KORN).
I have always had a lot of respect for Billy Sheehan. He blew me away when I saw him when he was a member of the David Lee Roth band in 80’s. Since then I have always considered Billy to be one of the top bass players in hard rock. I must admit that I had low expectations with Holy Cow. I haven’t had a whole lot of luck with the solo CD’s I have picked up in the past. They are typically hit or miss, and they usually get shelved fairly quickly. I don’t think that is going to happen with Holy Cow.
Sheehan has crafted some pretty cool tunes on this disc. I wouldn’t consider Billy Sheehan a great singer but he does do good job on the tunes here. His music is far better than his vocals, and his bass work as well as guitar playing is superb on this disc.
“In A Week or Two”, “A Lit’l Bit’l Do It To ‘Ya Ev’ry Time” (with Billy Gibbons on guitar), and “A Bloodless Casuality’ are amongst Holy Cow’s best moments.
The instrumental tracks are better than I expected them to be. “Dynamic Exhilarator” features Sheehan’s long time Mr. Big band mate, Paul Gilbert on guitar. “Theme From An Imaginary Sci Fi” is fun, only to hear Sheehan go off on his bass.
There are a few songs that I prefer to skip through as they just didn’t do it for me. I think a couple of instrumental tracks is fine, but five is a bit overkill in my opinion.
The Bottom line: this isn’t a perfect CD by any means, but it does have some good songs and definite replayability. It is definitely a CD that will appeal to Billy Sheehan’s long time fans.

0 PAUL GILBERT in Collaboration with FREDDIE NELSON Release New CD “UNITED STATES”
UNITED STATES is the first collaboration of Paul Gilbert and Freddie Nelson. The album features 10 new songs which they wrote, performed, and produced together in the summer of 2008. UNITED STATES will be released May 12th, 2009 on Mascot Records U.S.A.
Gilbert and Nelson share many musical and cultural roots. Both
Gilbert moved to Los Angeles, and Nelson stayed in Pittsburgh, so they never met until now.
On first listen, Nelson’s stunning vocals reminds many listeners of the legendary Freddie Mercury. But listen again, and you will be introduced to a singer, performer, and writer with a unique sound and character all his own.
Gilbert could easily rest on his “Guitar Hero” reputation, but being raised on The Beatles, The Who, Led Zeppelin, and Van Halen, Gilbert craves great rock singing and songs.

PAUL GILBERT:
Paul Gilbert burst onto the guitar scene with his band RACER X when he was only 19. His astonishing technical prowess and imaginative use of the Makita power drill instantly gained him a reputation as a Founding Father of Shred Guitar. Paul went on to form “super-group”, MR. BIG and enjoyed No. 1 chart success and massive world tours. Paul has also released over 10 solo CDs, and his legendary instructional DVDs are revered as the best in the business.
Known for his extreme virtuoso on-stage playing, passionate musicality, and quick “tongue in cheek” wit, Paul’s live performances have become legendary. In the past year, he toured with “G3” (featuring Joe Satriani and John Petrucci) and also supported Satriani on a sold out UK tour.
Paul had such a remarkable time on the G3 Tour that he was eager to get back to the USA and create a stunning and unique show featuring his two impeccable fellow guitarist friends, George Lynch and Richie Kotzen….and the GUITAR GENERATION TOUR was born!
GEORGE LYNCH:
Inventing, re-inventing and pushing the limits of rock guitar is the lifelong pursuit of guitarist George Lynch. From his work with Exciter, Dokken, Lynch Mob his new band, Souls Of We, George is revered as one of the most influential rock guitarists of all time. George has also designed a new line of guitar products that give guitarists around the world the opportunity and capability to push their own limits.
With a career that spans nearly 30 years, George is one of a long line of guitarists to come from the California hard rock world. But one distinction that separates him from the rest of the pack is that he remains to be musically relevant. For some, success was fleeting but none have left their indelible mark like Lynch has. He has survived the shortcomings of the tangled music business and the changing tides in musical trends.
Much of George Lynch’s success is credited to guitarmanship; however his song writing helped propel five highly successful Dokken albums from 1983 to 1988 to the top of the charts and won him recognition as one of the most influential rock guitarists in modern music. Another distinction that separates him from others of this genre is that his guitar playing earned Dokken a Grammy nomination in 1989 for Best Rock Instrumental for the now legendary, “Mr.Scary.” With the new decade came a different George Lynch in the 1990s. A bolder stylist and more knowledgeable guitarist was found in him as he formed the band Lynch Mob. Recording two albums and going back on the road to support them kept Lynch in the public eye and garnered him rave reviews. But he was yearning for a further approach to the guitar. While still promoting his work with Lynch Mob, he began work on a solo endeavor titled, “Sacred Groove” which demonstrated Lynch’s capacity to display different musical and guitar styles.
Lynch will always be creatively busy while constantly evolving as a musician. As Lynch continues to broaden his musical scope, he will continue to influence fans for years to come as a player and song writer who is always on top of his game!
RICHIE KOTZEN:
Richie Kotzen erupted onto the music scene as a guitar virtuoso at age 17. He recorded his first solo album on Shrapnel Records with four more solo albums to follow. By 19 Kotzen was approached by glam metal band Poison in which he wrote the #4 MTV Video and top 20 Billboard hit “STAND” on the Native Tongue album hitting platinum status soon thereafter. After Poison, Kotzen continued recording on various labels including Geffen, Shrapnel and JVC and joined a stint with famed bassist Stanley Clarke. Later that year Kotzen joined Mr. Big best known for their #1 hit song “JUST TO BE WITH YOU” stepping in for shred guitar guru Paul Gilbert.
Known for his soulful singing and captivating stage shows, Kotzen continues to solo on massive world tours. Kotzens popularity has grown to astronomical proportions in over 7 countries, where he regularly tours, landing him the opening slot as the opening act for the legendary Rolling Stones a Bigger Bang Tour in Japan.
Kotzen has released 17 solo albums, 9 collaborative/band albums, an instructional & home DVD landing him to the top of a multi-platinum career.
By invitation, Kotzen joined Paul Gilbert on stage at the House of Blues on Sunset Strip, where they tore down the house separately and collectively for an encore that proved big guitars and virtuoso players still rule the rock stage. In excitement to repeat this amazing synergy Kotzen accepted to join fellow guitarists and friends, Paul Gilbert and George Lynch for THE GUITAR GENERATION!
