7 Vie’s Verses – Why Has Poison Been Relegated To An Opening Act?
I was at a summer barbecue this past weekend, listening to good music and enjoying cold beer. Like most conversations that happen around me, the talk turned to music. A group of us started discussing concerts that we’ve been to, or plan to attend this summer. One of the guys mentioned that he just saw Def Leppard with Lita Ford and Poison. He told me what a great time he had and how he was surprised that Poison was still around. That got me to thinking. When did Poison get stuck as an opening act?
In the early 00s, Poison was headlining a glam festival every year. They would hit the road with Warrant, Cinderella, Sebastian Bach…the list was endless. They even put out an album of brand new material in 2002, Hollyweird. And while it wasn’t their best record, it was cool that Poison was recording new music for the fans that wanted it. Then, something strange happened. In 2004, Poison (apparently) couldn’t afford to go out on a headline tour, so they decided to open for Kiss. And while that was a cool concept for one tour, it never should have become the status quo.
In 2006 Poison went on a co-headlining tour with Cinderella. In 2007, they hit the road with Ratt in support of their terrible covers album, Poison’D. After a 2008 headlining tour with Dokken and Sebastian Bach, the band spent 2009 opening for Def Leppard. In 2010, Poison did not tour at all. The next year they opened for Motley Crue, and this year, they are out opening for Def Leppard once again. This is a band that ten years ago was headlining sold out concerts. Sure, they were in sheds across America, but they were still headlining to 12,000 people. That’s quite a feat! And now, they have been pushed to an opening act, exactly what they were at the start of their career. How can the band be all right with this?
I am sure that the money they earn makes it easier to swallow their pride and open, but what the band should be doing is working on new material and preparing themselves to be headliners once again. Even without new music, if Poison would decide to perform some different songs live, they could be headliners once again. The biggest issue that I have with Poison is that they play the same set list year after year after year. Why not try and mix it up by performing a few tracks from Crack A Smile, or HollyWeird. Why not play something from Native Tongue other than “Stand?” Why not perform a few of the studio tracks from the live albums? Of course Poison is always going to play “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” “Talk Dirty To Me,” and “Nothing But A Good Time.” I understand that. But why not shake it up with “Cover Of A Rolling Stone” instead of “We’re An American Band?” Pull out “No Ring No Gets” and lose “Ride The Wind.” Yes, I love “Ride The Wind” too, but I’d much rather hear a song that I’ve never heard the band perform live.
And if Poison is worried about not being able to carry the load themselves, then gather up another band or two and have them come out with you for support. Warrant (with Robert Mason) would be a great choice. Night Ranger has been incredible on the road, and they would make a great pairing with Poison. If Kix could be talked into doing a summer tour, a Kix/Poison concert would sell like hotcakes. And there is always Cinderella, a very popular draw.
As for opening acts, there are a ton of classic bands out there that would fit this bill. Great White, Lynch Mob, Mike Tramp, Enuff Z’Nuff, and Bang Tango are all available. They would all be a great addition to the tour. It could even be one of the best tours of the summer if done correctly. It’s just a shame to see the once mighty Poison, one of the best live acts of the 80s circuit, to be used as an opening band, when they could clearly be out on their own. I can only hope that the band will hear my plea. Also, a new album of original material would be nice. Please don’t leave us with Poison’D as your final studio album. That would be a disgrace.

5 Vie’s Verses – Why Don’t Bands Mix It Up More?
Inspired by the recent Rockitt Rant about Poison releasing yet another greatest hits album and most likely performing the same set list (again), I’ve given some thought to why bands don’t mix up their live sets anymore. What’s the matter with these rockers? Don’t they connect with their fans? Why won’t they perform some deep cuts?
Kiss is a classic example of this. Sure, they played some new songs from Sonic Boom on their last tour, but when’s the last time the band really reached into their catalog to pull out the deep tracks like “I,” “Saint and Sinner,” or “Sweet Pain?” Hell, even “Shandi” played anywhere except Australia would be a treat. These bands have to know that the fans love to hear deep tracks, and if you’re worried about casual fans not knowing the songs, or complaining about not hearing the hits, then only play one or two deep cuts. Or maybe, just maybe, the band could mix it up and perform a different set every night? Aerosmith always does. Springsteen always does. It’s one way to sell multiple tickets to area shows.
Poison is another perfect example. They’ve been touring the amphitheaters since 1999 and they’ve played the same greatest hits set since then too. Although songs like “Sexual Thing” and “Lay Your Body Down” have been out in the public since the late 90s, they’ve never performed these songs live. There are also 5 great songs on Power To The People that they could perform, and while “I Hate Every Bone In Your Body But Mine” was played on one (or two) tours, they have since forgotten about these songs. I would love to hear “Strange,” or “Can’t Bring Me Down,” or anything from Crack A Smile, but the band won’t do it.
Motley Crue needs to mix it up as well. Wouldn’t it be nice to see the Crue pull out songs like “All I Need,” or “Too Fast For Love?” Other Crue tracks that would sound great live are songs like “Afraid,” “Misunderstood” (I know Vince didn’t sing this one, but so what? Play it anyway. Vince is only going to sing every third word regardless), or “Hell On High Heels.” That would be spectacular!
Bands need to reach deeper into their catalog to entertain the masses. While Kix does a great job of mixing it up, I would cream my pants if they would play “Luv-A-Holic” just once in concert. We know that you have to play “Don’t Close Your Eyes” and “Cold Blood,” but there are other great songs in your repertoire that would sound great in concert. Buckcherry — is there any chance that you could perform “For The Movies” or “Borderline?” Papa Roach, why not play “Infest?” The die-hard fans would go nuts!
Iron Maiden is a superb example of a band that gets it right. Sure, some fans mocked their decision to play A Matter Of Life And Death in its entirety, and other fans were disappointed when the band toured last year only playing newer material, but all of their concerts sold out. On other tours, Maiden gave the fans only the hits from back in the day. Every Iron Maiden tour is a new experience and that’s why I will continue to pay for their tickets. If Poison mixed it up like that, I would make it a point to see them every summer.
Pearl Jam is another band that really gets it. Not only do they perform different sets tour after tour, they perform different sets night after night. When Pearl Jam plays three nights at Madison Square Garden, all three nights sell out. A big part of that is due to repeat customers. Fans know that every Pearl Jam concert is going to be a different experience, so they purchase tickets for all three nights, not just one. Could Poison or Kiss sell out multiple nights at the Garden? They’re having enough trouble selling out one night at an amphitheater.
Bands need to realize that the cost of tickets has skyrocketed in recent years, and if they expect fans to part with $100 to see a show, then they really need to work hard. Not just on stage, but they need to scrutinize their set list and dust off some classics. Don’t be lazy! Re-learn some of your older material and bring the deeper cuts to the concert. That would make every show worthwhile and it’s almost guaranteed that fans would come back year after year. I know I’d shell out my money. Would you?
7 Rockitt Rant – Bret Michaels, Enough is Enough!
In the late eighties and early nineties, the band Poison was a force to be reckoned with. In 2011, Poison is making a joke out of themselves, mostly in partdue to Bret Michaels spending more time doing Hollywood Reality TV shows, than writing new music.
For Poison’s 25th Anniversary, the band is releasing “Double Dose of Poison, Ultimate Hits”. Yes, you guessed it, another CD compilation with NO new Poison songs.
“Between Double Dose Of Poison and the 25th Anniversary Tour, I honestly can’t think of a better way to mark this major milestone,” says Poison’s singer Bret Michaels.
Really Brett? Really? It is the 25th Anniversary of the band that made you famous, and you can’t think of anything better than to release your 8th CD Compilation?
Let us see, there has already been “Poison’s Greatest Hits: 1986 – 1996”, “Poison – Rock Champions”, “Best of Ballads & Blues”, “The Best of Poison: 20 Years of Rock”, “Poison 10 Great Songs”, “Poison – Box Set”, “Nothin’ But A Goot Time: The Poison Collection” I haven’t even mentioned the five live albums of the same regurgitated Poison songs.
Mr. Michaels, here is a unique idea, for your 25th Anniverary, how about spending some time with your band mates and write some new songs instead of releasing another compilation of the tunes that the majority of Poison fans already own.
I am happy that you are healthy, and you are back out there playing music, however, I won’t waste any more of my dollars on your Greatest Hits Compilations, nor will I waste my hard earned bucks to watch you play the same songs live. Before you reinvented your self as a Hollywood Reality star, you were a musician, and you had talent. You have written some of the biggest pop metal songs of the eighties and nineties. I have no doubts that you and Poison could reconnect with today’s music fans, if only you could write some NEW music.
Please take your self out of the running for “Rock of Love 15”, “Dancing With the Stars”, or whatever your next reality project is, and do what the fans really want. Write some new tunes! If Poison puts out a CD of new material (No covers please) myself, and many other fans will be more than happy to buy your music, and support your live shows. Until then, seeing Poison live will be like watching an old reality show re-run.
4 Vie’s Verses – Odds On: Motley Crue/Poison Tour
The unthinkable has happened. As reported here at Hard Rock Hideout last week, Motley Crue and Poison have announced a co-headlining tour with The New York Dolls. While I think this is going to be quite a concert, there are still several questions that remain unanswered. Most pressing of all is, “How in the world did this happen?” Both Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee said they would never tour with Poison. When Sixx was with Brides of Destruction, they had an opportunity to open for Kiss and declined, because Poison was part of that tour. Why the sudden change?
For Poison, the answer is easy. It is clearly about the money. The last couple of tours that Poison headlined had trouble selling out, in some cases there was trouble selling tickets at all. Plus, Poison is not touring behind any new material (not that the Crue are either, but at least they have a somewhat recent record to support) and they will most likely play the same tired setlist that a majority of fans have memorized.
As for Motley, I’m not sure why they agreed to do this tour. Their ticket sales have always done well and they are neither fans of nor friends with Poison. So what gives? Did management put them up to this? Did the concert promoters see dollar signs so big that they had to make this tour happen?
Unfortunately, I do not have the answers to any of these questions, but I do have a fun game we can play regarding this tour. It’s called Odds On (yeah, it’s a rip off of Pardon The Interruption’s “Odds Makers,” so sue me for lacking in originality). These are the chances that I think certain things will or will not happen during the Poison/Motley Crue summer tour.
Chances of this tour being completed
82%. Poison are dedicated professionals and Motley Crue always finish a tour regardless of how messed up they get. However, what could cause this tour to collapse is if the bands don’t get along. What will the chemistry be like? Will any pot shots be taken by the Crue at Poison? If Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee were forced into doing this tour, there is no telling what might happen as the summer progresses. Anger, resentment, and perhaps even jealousy may erupt from either or both of these hard core rockers. And past experience has shown us that professionalism is not one of Tommy Lee’s priorities. Good luck to the road crew!
Chances that the majority of these concerts sell out
61%. I saw the prices for this concert and they were about what I expected. The range is between $45 and $95 (before fees). While both of these bands sell well, the economy is still a little shaky and fans are carefully choosing which concerts they want to see. What help this tour is that it was announced early. I believe there is potential for this show to do well, especially in the northeast, but in other areas of the US, I’m not so sure.
Chances that Poison will go on stage last
3%. I know that this is billed as a co-headlining tour, but let’s be real. The last band to go on for the evening is the true headliner. The fact that Motley is doing this tour at all after Sixx and Lee said that would never happen means some egos had to be soothed. There is almost no chance that Motley would go on stage at any time but last. The 3% is up there, because maybe, just maybe, in Pittsburgh, Poison might be allowed to be the headliners (Poison is from PA). Other than that, it’s Motley coming out last every night.
Chances that Bret Michaels out performs Vince Neil
97%. Barring some miracle scenario where Vince goes to a performance coach prior to the launch of this tour, Brett Michaels is going to outperform Vince Neil at every stop. Brett is in better shape than Vince. Brett is a better vocalist than Vince. Brett is a better guitar player than Vince. Brett is a better entertainer than Vince. Plus, Brett sings all the words to his songs. Vince will give you every third word in between huffed panting because his overweight body can’t handle sprinting all over the stage for 90 minutes.
Chances that Poison and Motley Crue perform more than a one song encore
17%. I’ve seen a lot of co-headlining tours. I’ve seen a lot of co-headlining glam tours too. Almost always, there is the one song encore. On the last two Motley tours that I’ve seen, the Crue has done a one song encore. Every time that I’ve seen Poison (I believe it’s been a total of 7 times), they have performed a one song encore. I don’t see any reason for this to change.
Chances of an all star jam encore featuring members of all three bands
9%. While it would be a fan’s dream come true to see all the members of The New York Dolls, Poison, and Motley Crue jamming together to one of their favorite rock songs (a cover of a Led Zeppelin tune, perhaps), it just isn’t going to happen. Again, we’re not even sure how well the bands are going to get along. The chemistry required to pull off an all star jam is severely lacking. I think this is more a case of three separate bands performing for the fans, collecting their pay, and going home at the end of the summer. There’s no sharing of a tour bus, no hotel parties featuring all members of the band, and no back stage group hug amongst the different bands. This is clearly an every band for themselves tour. Perhaps they will prove me wrong, but I doubt it.
Chances of this tour happening again
0%. This is a once in a lifetime deal. If you want to see these two bands together, then you’d better be in front of your computer on March 18th when tickets go on sale.

3 POISON And MÖTLEY CRÜE To Team Up For Summer Tour
Rocker Bret Michaels, currently recuperating from heart surgery, will reunite with all original POISON band mates for a 25th Anniversary tour tentatively titled Glam – A – Gedon 25. For the first time ever Poison and MÖTLEY CRÜE will co-headline a select date summer tour with special guests the NEW YORK DOLLS. Although several controversial statements have been made in the press by certain members of Mötley Crüe vowing this tour would never happen, that is simply not the case. Fans of both bands have spoken and want the tour to happen and both Mötley Crüe and Poison have agreed. Concert promoters in these select cities state that the buzz is unbelievable for both the Poison dates as well as the Mötley Crüe / Poison tour. No doubt this will be the rock tour of the summer. Both Poison and Mötley Crüe have a long history of hit songs, bigger than life stage shows, no holds barred live energy not to mention the two bands combined have sold over 100 million records and have over 24 top 40 hits between them.
Tickets for the Mötley Crüe/Poison tour will go on sale March 18th.
Poison plan to kick off their 25th Anniversary Glam -A – Gedon 25 tour in Tupelo Mississippi at the Bancorp South Arena Wednesday May 25th. Michaels will then continue solo, playing Thursday May 26th in Ft. Walton Beach where he will perform for the fans and troops as he did last Memorial Day weekend. Michaels will rejoin Poison in Little Rock at the River Fest Amphitheater on Friday May 27th. Michaels will then perform solo at the Hard Rock in Biloxi on Saturday May 28th. Bret will rejoin Poison and Mötley Crüe Sunday May 29th at Rocklahoma. Poison will then continue on alone playing arenas from Memorial Day until rejoining Mötley Crüe in Dallas at the Starplex Amphitheater on Tuesday June 7th.
When reporters recently asked Bret Michaels if there was any bad blood between the bands, Michaels laughs “there may be some friendly competition but there is no bad blood at all on my part. Nikki and I have spoken several times on the phone recently and the conversations went great.” Michaels continues, “Music is a universal language and I am extremely excited that this tour has come together as are the fans, they are truly going to see a great show. Honestly, I could care less about all the mudslinging, it gets nobody nowhere, and after all I have been through health wise in the last year, I am going to try to focus on what does matter which is the show, the fans, fun and personally throwing a hell of a backstage party.”
Bret Michaels solo tour will start March 19th when he appears at Muhammad Ali’s Celebrity Fight Night alongside Kevin Costner, David Foster, Billy Crystal, Halle Berry and Reba McIntire and will continue up until the Mötley Crüe / Poison tour starts. The Get Your Rock On solo tour in support of the album of the same name will resume immediately following the select summer dates with Mötley Crüe and Poison.

4 An Update on Bret Michaels Condition
Everyone at Michaels Entertainment would like to thank all fans and friends for their continued thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.
At this point Bret remains in ICU in critical condition. He is under 24 hour doctors care and supervision. We are hopeful that further tests will locate the source of the bleeding, which has still not been located. As we all know Bret is a fighter and we are hopeful that once all is complete the slurred speech, blurred vision and dizziness, etc. will be eliminated and all functions will return to normal.

2 Turkey Video #3 – Poison – Unskinny Bop
Can you really have a Turkey Video countdown without a Poison song? Not really! “Unskinny Bop” is such an easy target, as this song features would could be the worst opening guitar riff in the history of rock. Sure Poison had a huge hit with this song, but this is some of the worst guitar work I have ever heard. This didn’t take much creativity on CC Deville’s part. See for yourself below.
1 Injury to Bret Michaels At the Tony Awards?
’80s glam rockers POISON performed their hit song “Nothing But A Good Time” earlier tonight (Sunday, June 7) at the 63rd annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
At the end of POISON’s performance, Bret Michaels failed to get back to the stage in time (as did the rest of POISON) and tried to jump up, only to have a descending set piece smack him on the head and knock him to the ground.
Tonys spokeswoman Christina Stejskal said the rocker “missed his mark.”
Stejskal did not immediately know the extent of Bret’s injury.

POISON appeared with the cast of “Rock of Ages”, the jukebox musical about an aspiring rock group on the Sunset Strip. The dark-horse show, which originated at Hollywood’s King King club before moving to Las Vegas and then Broadway, received five nominations, including one for best musical.
The appearance was the first time that Michaels has appeared with POISON on the red carpet since the infamous fight between him and C.C. DeVille took place at MTV Music Awards.

0 Live Raw and Uncut Tour – Poison
On August 16th of 2008, Poison brought their Live, Raw and Uncut Tour to Cincinnati. The band usually brings their tour here each summer, and usually plays to near sell out crowds.
I have gone to their concert for the last couple of years, and while the band was excellent last year, this time around I was a little disappointed. Big John from Rock of Love was the emcee for this show, which for me added nothing to the concert. Personally, I don’t think Bret Michaels should be mixing his Poison and Rock
of Love thing together, but that is just me. The band also seemed to play a shorter set, so Bret could leave and attend an after party at a local club, the Blue Note in Cincinnati.
The set list for the show this year was something like this:
“Look What the Cat Dragged In”, ” I Want Action”, “Ride The Wind”, “I Won’t Forget You”, “What I Like About You”, “Something To Believe In”, “Your Mama Don’t Dance”, “Unskinny Bop”, “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn”, “Fallen Angel”, and the set closer “Nothin’ But A Good Time”.
Luckily Poison doesn’t overcharge their fans for their tickets, which is a good thing, but the lack of new material (no surprise there), and Bret Michael’s voice being a little off was somewhat of a disappointment to me. This was my stepdaughter’s first Poison experience, and she enjoyed it. I guess that is all that matters in the long run.
Hopefully Bret Michaels will walk away from his Rock of Love thing, and start writing some new music with Poison.

1 The Def Leppard and Poison War of Words Continues
POISON drummer Rikki Rockett has threatened DEF LEPPARD singer Joe Elliott with a beatdown following Elliott’s recent onstage outburst in which Joe reportedly called Rockett a “fucking idiot [who has] never seen a good band before.”
In a brand new posting in the blog section of his MySpace page, Rockett writes, “For fuck’s sake, Joe Elliott! Joe, king of the power mullet, at this point you need to shut the fuck up! No more talkin’ shit. I’ll give you a choice on how you go down. Arm bar, leg lock, shoulder lock, triangle, back choke or knock out. You pick! Let’s get it on!”
0 ZO2 Is Heading to Cable TV
Patrons of Arlene’s Grocery, the Lower East Side nightclub, have long known Paul and David Zablidowsky and their good friend Joey Cassata as ZO2, a shaggy-haired, heavy-metal trio whose set usually precedes the Monday night karaoke party. They might also know that in 2004 the band realized a dream when it was tapped for a 40-date tour, opening for Kiss and Poison.
But even the most ardent ZO2 fans may not realize that to make ends meet — even after that big break with Kiss — the three musicians moonlighted on Saturday mornings as a sought-after children’s birthday party act called the Z Brothers. Had there been T-shirts for their dayside tour crisscrossing the metropolitan New York region, they would have listed dates playing for the children of Robert De Niro, Michael J. Fox, Chazz Palminteri and Al Roker, the “Today” weatherman.
With their Jekyll-and-Hyde repertory — Wiggles by day, Judas Priest by night — it was probably inevitable that television would come calling. And on Aug. 24 at 11:30 p.m., IFC will unveil “Z Rock,” a 10-part comedy series based heavily on the real-life adventures of ZO2 and the Z Brothers.
In the show the band members play fictionalized versions of themselves, exaggerating their actual experiences — including a pitched rivalry with other New York-based children’s musicians — pursuing the recording contract that long eluded them.
“Television is what radio used to be,” said David Zablidowsky, 26, who plays bass and who, like his older brother, Paul, is known professionally only by his first name and last initial. “If you’re anybody, you’re on television now. That really is the way to get your music out there.”
Viewers inclined to watch the series with their young children, beware: IFC likes to refer to itself as “always uncut,” and “Z Rock” is no exception. It features plenty of topless groupies and simulated sexual acts, between, among others, the band members and some of the young mothers seen doing the hokeypokey at the daytime shows. Which raises a question: Just how true to life were some of those scenes?
“There were always hot moms,” Mr. Cassata, 30, the band’s drummer, said wistfully over a recent lunch of steamed broccoli and seared tuna, alongside his bandmates at a theater district restaurant.
Paulie Z, 28, interjected: “They were all wealthy, good-looking and in shape. I don’t speak for anyone in the band but myself, because I don’t know what skeletons are in their closets. But I definitely took advantage of some of the nannies.”
Like the dialogue in “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “This Is Spinal Tap,” much of that in “Z Rock” is improvised, though with the players working off highly detailed outlines. For the three band members, who had never previously acted, the approach proved a blessing. Most of the situations in which their characters are placed by the show’s writers and producers — who include Mark Farrell, a former producer of “Curb” — are adapted from tales the band told in hours spent sitting around a table.
“They created a world that was familiar to the guys,” said Lynn Lendway, who manages the real-life ZO2 with her husband, Bob Held. “Then they said, ‘Speak the way you speak.’ ”
For a supporting cast the producers surrounded the musicians with stand-up comedians and improv players, including Lynne Koplitz (who plays the band’s dedicated if addled manager, Dina); Greg Giraldo (as a powerful record producer, who delivers an endlessly profane reprimand to Paulie Z after the band is late for his son’s birthday party); and Jay Oakerson (as a club manager who repeatedly propositions Paulie, who is straight).
Among the many musicians playing fictionalized versions of themselves in cameos are John Popper of Blues Traveler (who agrees to sign the Z Brothers, not ZO2, to a recording contract, but only after Dina sleeps with him); Dee Snider of Twisted Sister; and Chris Barron of the Spin Doctors. Joan Rivers plays Joan Rivers, but reimagined as Dina’s aunt.
Where fiction and reality diverge most sharply in the series, Mr. Cassata said, is in the TV band’s propensity for being “very self-sabotaging.”
“It seems on the show like we’re reckless, but we’re not in real life,” he said. “We never put the ZO2 career in jeopardy. That stuff is definitely artistic license.”
The show is but the latest milestone in the rocky seven-year history of ZO2.
The band’s roots are in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, where the Zablidowsky brothers were raised by their mother, Doris, who worked in a hospital cafeteria, and their father, Marty, the manager of an electronics warehouse. Marty was also a guitarist who played in a rock trio, called Z, that included his brother.
“I honestly didn’t know any kids’ songs,” Paul said, “because we grew up listening to Black Sabbath.”
Among the brothers’ earliest memories were making cardboard cutouts of guitars and records. At some point in elementary school, their mother took the boys to a Sam Ash music store to buy their first guitars.
While in high school, the two brothers began writing their own music, which they infused with elements drawn from a variety of influences, including Def Leppard, Grand Funk Railroad, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Guns N’ Roses and, more than anything, Kiss. The brothers’ first break came in 2001, when David answered an open call for a bass player in a blues act. While he didn’t win the job, he wound up getting much more: Mr. Held, the producer who conducted the audition, encouraged him to front his own band.
Eventually the brothers approached Mr. Cassata, whom Paul had played with in a cover band; in short order Mr. Held agreed to produce an album. It was called “Tuesdays and Thursdays,” and was financed entirely by the band’s earnings from its children’s-party business.
Mr. Held, who knew Paul Stanley of Kiss, eventually got the album to him; Kiss liked it so much that ZO2 was invited to tour with it in the summer of 2004.
The band drew standing ovations from Kiss’s audiences, but the months that followed served as a reality check. No one else in the music business came calling, so Mr. Cassata returned to his job as a medical-records assistant at a hospital, and Paul returned to the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, where he had first drawn notice as a performer for children, and to the birthday-party circuit. The following winter, David, who had found some success as a bass player, went on tour with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, a sprawling rock group known for, among other things, reworking holiday songs.
Still, it was the band’s birthday-party work that helped get it to the small screen. A parent in the audience at several parties in 2005 was Brian Stern, an agent in the television division at the William Morris Agency.
He later caught ZO2 in a show at the B. B. King Blues Club in Times Square; before long Mr. Held was pitching him versions of what would eventually become “Z Rock.” In approving the series, Debbie DeMontreux, a senior vice president of IFC, said she could relate to it, at least to the kid-musician part. (The mother of a preschooler, she has attended her share of birthday parties.)
With their series about to begin, and with a second album (“Ain’t It Beautiful”) out on Riker Hill, a label created by the band’s management, ZO2 is readying a fall tour of clubs and small theaters. But the band won’t be playing any furnished basements or living rooms.
“Fortunately, we don’t need to anymore,” Mr. Cassata said. “It was a means to an end.”

10 The Poison and Def Leppard Fight Continues….
I haven’t covered this story at HRH, but Joe Elliott’s latest retort to Bret Michaels and Rikki Rockett is pricless! Read on!
DEF LEPPARD frontman Joe Elliott has hit back at POISON singer Bret Michaels and drummer Rikki Rockett over their response to Elliott’s comments at a June 6 press conference at the Sweden Rock Festival, in which Elliott said bands like POISON and MÖTLEY CRÜE had “no substance in their music” and therefore relied more on their image in the ’80s. Rockett questioned Elliott’s rock historian credentials in his posting, and wrote, “I’d be hurt if this were coming from John Lennon… So it takes about one minute and 45 seconds to put on eyeliner. I suppose during that same time you were writing the next ‘Imagine’.”
Michaels had already responded to Elliott’s comments earlier, saying, “We have not sold out, and continuously, for 20 years every arena because we care about just our appearance. The music comes first.” He then added, “(DEF LEPPARD) shouldn’t be knocking anyone about their music since they just did a show called ‘Dancing With The Stars’ in the U.S. and they got crucified because they fucking lip-synched the entire show, so before they bust anyone’s balls, I’ve never lip-synched a fucking thing in my life — ever! It’s the pot calling the kettle black.”
In a brand new message posted at DEF LEPPARD’s official web site, Elliott writes, “Whoah boys, slow down!!! Well, Bret has a point, we DID lip-synch on ‘Dancing With The Stars’… absolutely… a show they’d love to be on, no doubt! But it was two-fold. One, the nature of the show didn’t lean towards a full live performance, too many restrictions, so we lip-synched — the way ALL artists do when they shoot videos (and the same as we did on ‘American Bandstand’ 25 years ago, and every time we did ‘Top Of The Pops’, dozens of times, so to us Englishmen, it’s no big deal). Two, I had a severe respritory infection, as highlighted by my croaking through the (absolutely 100% live!) ‘Ellen’ show performance the day before! My throat doctor (Dr. Sugarman, possibly Bret’s doctor too!) advised me NOT to sing for a week, but these shows were all on the week our new album was released, so canceling wasn’t an option…. hence my rather again croaky performance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ the next night! I was simply making the following simple point when I said a lot of those Hollywood bands weren’t ‘real’ (or whatever I said)… I was born Joseph Elliott, Sav was born Richard Savage, Rick was born Richard Allen, Phil was born Philip Collen, Viv was born Vivian Campbell, and oh, Steve was born Stephen Clark. I don’t think anyone in POISON uses their real name, do they? And I could name hundreds of others who don’t, but POISON came to mind because I was asked about them! It’s nothing personal, it was just an answer to a question. As for being ‘crucified’ for lip-synching, one DJ on KLOS doesn’t worry me, however, a Top 5 entry in the Billboard album chart the week after and very healthy ticket sales seems to lean towards the fact that most of our fans knew that I was sick and that I ‘took one for the team,’ as it were. Calm down boys, you’ve heard worse, no?! Hey… Rikki implies we’re miming on tour?! HA!!! Well, he’s welcome to come see us anytime he wants… Obviously not used to hearing a good band very often then, is he?? 🙂 Also, glitter rock may well have been re-christened in the 80’s by er, someone in Hollywood, but trust me, I WAS THERE in 1972 in the UK, when Bowie, Bolan, SLADE, SWEET etc….. ruled with GLAM ROCK! Check out some old mags and you’ll see for yourself. I’m no historian, just a big fan, but sorry, Rikki (excuse me if I’ve spelled that wrong, though!), you’re wrong here, mate… very wrong! As you might say yourself, chill dude, just shootin’ the shit! PS: Rikki — John Lennon is dead, in case no no told you… And ‘Elliott’ is spelled with 2 ‘T’s…”

I thought this disc was going to be all new material, instead, Rock My World has three new tracks (Go That Far, Fallen, Start Again), one remixed song (It’s My Party), and 9 tunes that were previously released on Michaels’ previous solo CD’s, Freedom of Sound and Songs of Life.
Rock My World is more or less a Bret Michaels greatest hits CD. Those of you looking for a new Poison style, glam metal CD, may be disappointed by this disc. This is a completely different sounding disc. It is a mix of styles that blends pop, rock, and dare I say, country music.
The new song, Go That Far, did not impress me at all. I saw the video,
before I heard the song, and it more or less plays out to be an advertisement for Rock of Love 2. Rock My World is not without good songs, but they aren’t enough of them here. Some of the highlights are the songs Driven, the Poisonish ballad Raine, Bittersweet, and the bluesy Start Again. On the latter half of Rock My World, Bret pulls a Bon Jovi, and does a duet with country music’s Jessica Andrews. I am not a big country music fan, so I didn’t care for this song too much, but this track does have some major crossover potential.
Now that Michaels has relaunched his career as a Hollywood Icon, with the T.V. Show Rock of Love, he needs to focus on his music career, and stop treading water with released like Rock My World.
Bret will be the headliner on Thursday Night, July 10th, at the Rocklahoma music festival. He will be playing a mix of Poison tunes, and songs from Rock My World. For you Rocklahoma fans, I hope he focuses on the Poison material. This is a disc for diehard Bret Michaels fans only.

10 Richie Sambora on Rock of Love 3?!
Richie Sambora is set to replace Bret Michaels in the next season of TV dating show Rock of Love, according to reports.
Poison frontman Michaels recently wrapped season two when he chose aspiring actress Ambre Lake as the winner and his new girlfriend.
Despite the first season being exposed as a fraud–the winning contestant already had a boyfriend–Michaels and Lake insist this time it is for real, and they are handing the show over to another single star.
Bon Jovi guitarist Sambora, 48, has been single since his April 2007 divorce from actress Heather Locklear and a short-lived romance with Locklear’s former friend Denise Richards ended last year.
And TV bosses want to help him find love. A source tells OK! magazine, “He’s perfect for TV. If you thought Bret was must-see TV, you ain’t seen anything yet. Richie is going to be a train wreck looking for love.”

The season finale of Rock of Love 2 is now over, and Bret Michaels has made his decision. Who did he pick?

As much as you hate to admit it, you are probably watching Bret Michaels’ Rock of Love 2 on VH1.
Tonight is the finale of Season 2.
Bret’s remaining choices are Daisy and Ambre.
Both girls have lied to Bret about different things. Neither girl seems to have an apparent edge.
Daisy apparently works as a stripper and lives with her ex-boyfriend, who she still shares a bed with. Daisy has also had a relationship with CC Deville. (Things that make you say hmmmmm!)
Ambre lied about her age (she is 37), she told Bret she was 31.
The Rock of Love Finale is tonight at 9 P.M. on VH1.
Spoilers from the final episode will be posted at HardRockHideout.com tonight. My guess is, there will be a Season 3 of the show in the fall of 2008. Assuming that the Poison, Sebastian Bach and Dokken tour is over by then.
