3 Sights & Sounds From The Mayhem Festival – Slipknot
Before the Mayhem festival in Indianapolis in August, I have never had the opportunity to see Slipknot live. I knew they had a pretty awesome fan base, but I had no idea what to expect from their live show.
The Verizon Wireless Center was packed to the gills, after Disturbed got everyone charged up with their live show, a short 30 minutes later Slipknot took the stage. The show opened in complete darkness. Not a light to be seen on the stage. Everyone with a lighter or cell phone had this venue illuminated. The stands and lawn were packed with bodies every where you could see. It had to look pretty awesome from the stage, as it was very cool from where I was standing.
Slipknot’s set was a heavy as hell, high energy, but extremely entertaining set.
The set list was as follows:Danger- Keep Away, Surfacing, The Blister Exists, Get This, Spit It Out, Before I Forget, Disasterpiece, Pychosocial, The Heretic’s Anthem, Prosthetics, Duality, All Hope Is Gone, People = Shit, and an encore with (Sic).
(#8) Corey Taylor can go from a normal melodic vocal to a heavy death metal scream in the blink of an eye, and he does it well.
Slipknot is the only band I have ever seen to use three drummers. (#1) Joey Jordinson crushes on his traditional drum kit, while (#6) Shawn “The Clown” Crahan and (#3) Chris Fehn both play their own custom percussion, as well as marching band style drums during some songs.
(#5) Craig Jones new mask kind of cracked me up. For whatever reason, he reminded me of a muppet when he was headbanging back from his sampler.
The encore with (Sic) was extremely cool as (#1) Joey Jordinson’s drums kits came up on a riser and moved around. The last time I saw anything remotely like this, it was during Motley Crue’s Girls, Girls, Girls tour from 1987.

The lights, the stage, the masks and the metal all added to the show that Slipknot put on. I must admit that I have never seen a metal show like this one, and I absolutely loved it. I am not the biggest Slipknot fan, but I would definitely go see these guys again if they came near me. No metalhead should miss Slipknot’s live show. Even if you aren’t a fan of the music, you should go for the experience. Slipknot puts on one hell of a great concert.
