On Through the Night is the mighty metal debut by Def Leppard. It blows my mind that so many newer Def Leppard fans are unaware of the band’s NWOBHM roots, and the excellent metal sound they used to possess. This record rocks hard, and does not sound overly dated in 2007.
On Through the Night is my favorite Def Leppard record. I will pick this one every time over Pyromania and Hysteria. On this record, the band was hungry, they had not achieved the massive success that they would years later. The songs have not been over played on the radio as have so many of the later discs. This is one of the reasons I still find this album so appealing.
Sadly, this record often goes overlooked today. Most fans start off of with Pyromania or Hysteria, and they are missing out on some great records by doing so.
The two axe attack of Pete Willis and Steve Clark, and the pre-accident drumming of Rick Allen gives this band an awesome heavy sound.
Rock Brigade and Hello America deliver the best one, two punch that any Def Leppard records could hope to deliver. Both are hard rocking tunes that truly deliver.
It Could Be You is a song that never achieve hit potential but it is a lost Def Leppard classic, that is still worth checking out.
To me, Wasted is still one of the biggest Def Leppard anthems of all time.
I find a lot of the other not so well songs such as When The Walls Came Tumbling Down, Rocks Off, and It Don’t Matter ultimately satisfying. The songs are more raw, and not overproduced as a lot of the stuff from the newer Def Lep releases.
On Through the Night is another classic metal disc that is available for less than $10.00 at most retailers today. It is much better than a lot of the newer stuff out there today, and is a disc that I still recommend picking up! If you don’t own this, you owe it to yourself to check out this lost Def Leppard classic!

One of the hottest bands on the L.A. circuit in the mid to late 80′s was Shark Island. Rumor has it that they were so good, some singer named Axl Rose used to tape singer Richard Black’s performances to he could copy his moves. Read more about that here.
Shark Island’s debut CD Law of the Order was originally released in 1989, and was the band’s only release until 2006′s Gathering of the Faithful.
Law Of The Order is a CD that is hard to categorize. This isn’t your typical hair metal. It isn’t flamboyant enough to be glam (but they sure tried to market the band that way). It isn’t gritty enough to be considered sleaze metal. This is more of a straight forward hard rock cd, and a very good one at that.
Law Of The Order is one of those CD’s that you truly need to hear to appreciate. There are several really good songs on this disc including Paris Calling, Somebody’s Falling, Get Some Strange, Passion to Ashes, and an excellent jamming cover of the Fleetwood Mac tune, The Chain. (I actually prefer the Shark Island version, to the original.)
My copy of this CD is the re-released version from 2004 that has a few bonus tracks that were only available on movie soundtracks at one time. Both Dangerous and Father Time, came from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure Soundtrack. My City came from the Point Break Soundtrack. All 3 songs are an excellent addition to a great CD.
Not only did my copy include the bonus songs, but it also has the Bastille Day, Alive The Whiskey CD included with it. This is the CD that the band wanted to release as the major label debut. The record company didn’t like that idea, and it didn’t get released until now. This captures the band performing live at the Whiskey in Hollywood, back on July 14th, 1989. The songs do sound a lot better than their studio versions. It is a very tight set, and definitely a collection of live tunes worth owning.
This CD is out of print and is starting pull down bigger dollars on EBay. I was able to secure a copy through Impulse Music recently. If you can still order it, I would get this one before it is gone. It is well worth your hard earned dollars.

Bang Camaro has a great 80′s style hard rock sound, but the major difference is the band has a choir of twenty lead singers.
With 20 singers at the helm, every track becomes a sing along anthem. It is a unique idea, that I do not recall being done before.
Not only does the band employ an army of singers, but they also have 3 axe slingers at their disposal: Alex Necochea, Bryn Bennett, Maclaine Diemer on Guitars and Keyboards, Dave Riley on Bass, and Andrew Dole on Drums.
The guitar sound on this album is very tight and full of guitar solos. I am not sure if I appreciate the novel idea of a male choir approach, but I do like the music on this record very well. Some of the songs here could have gone from good to great with a very good single male vocalist instead of twenty. This band probably would not have stood out if they didn’t try something new, so kudos to them for trying something different.
A couple of my favorite tunes are Push Push Lady Lightning and Out on the Streets.

I have been a fan of this band for a while, and I have enjoyed songs off of their previous releases Sinner, and Desensitized. I believe that Full Circle has surpassed both of those releases, both lyrically and sonically.
Usually, I don’t care for bands with singers who have a throaty singing style, but at times, Ryan McCombs reminds me of former Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley when he sings in his pure voice. His vocal style and sound is a definite improvement for Drowning Pool.
The title track, Full Circle starts this disc off right, with a hard driving tune that should please most head bangers out there. I bet you will find yourself singing “Rise Above You” with your devil horns in the air after a couple of listens.
Enemy is another heavy tune that absolutely crushes. It keeps the pace going nicely.
Shame has very catchy lyrics and reminds me quite a bit of Alice in Chains in style. Great Stuff!
Reborn is a mid tempo rocker that has some very cool guitar work by C.J. Pierce.
The tempo slows down for the song, Reason I’m Alive. This track was written by Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx. It is a cool song that should be a hit for Drowning Pool.
Soldiers is probably my favorite song off of Full Circle so far, and is the first single released by Drowning Pool. This song reminds me of the band’s former hit Bodies, which is very cool.
Paralyzed is another cool, mid tempo number that will likely find its way to radio before long.
Upside Down flat out rocks. This is another song that will get you headbanging quickly.
37 Stitches is another powerful song with major hit potential. You can preview this track below by clicking on the song title.

Yes, you guessed it! Rebel Yell is a remake of the 80′s Billy Idol classic. I really like Drowning Pool’s version on this song. It is a little bit heavier than the original song while staying fairly true to that version.
If you have ever been on the fence with Drowning Pool, you need to give the band a chance. This is by far their finest release. Not only will this appeal to Drowning Pool fans, but fans of Alice in Chains, and fans of 90′s metal. Don’t miss out on this excellent disc.

The Problem of Pain: Part 1 is the first of a two album set. The second disc will be released in 2008.
It is a rock opera that is inspired by the albums Rush “2112″ and Queensryche’s “Operation Mindcrime”.
The Problem of Pain retells the story of Job, from the Old Testament and deals with the question of why God allows evil and human suffering on earth.
The Problem of Pain is Torman Maxt’s third effort, and a very ambitious one at that for this three piece band. I must admit that I have not heard any of the band’s prior releases, but I am impressed with the ones I have heard on this disc.
Singer Tony Massaro has a voice that is similar to Rush’s Geddy Lee, giving the tunes on The Problem of Pain a very Rush like feel. Not only does Tony Massaro handle the vocals, but he proves to be a very talented guitar player as well. Many of the songs on this disc have a Classic Rock sound about them. I can hear elements of Rush, Led Zeppelin, and a maybe a little bit of Thin Lizzy in the music.
This is a very solid progressive rock CD, and one that requires multiple listens to fully appreciate. I enjoyed this disc, and will be spinning this quite a few more times in the coming months!

Before the Scorpions were Rocking You Like A Hurricane, they released this gem of a disc, back in 1982. Interestingly enough, Klaus Meine was undergoing surgery on his vocal chords at the time this album was written, and the original tracks were recorded with Don Dokken on vocals. Klaus Meine was able to recooperate in time to record the vocals for this disc, and the Dokken tapes never surfaced.
This Scorpions’ release has been one of my favorites for years. This disc hit # 10 on the Billboard chart, and spawned some of the Scorps’ biggest anthems, Blackout, Can’t Live Without You, No One Like You, and You Give Me All I Need. Blackout is also the Scorpions first platinum disc in the United States (over 1 million units sold).
Even the weaker tracks on this disc are solid. There are a few other great rockers worth mentioning, including the killer track, Dynamite, the excellent upbeat tune Arizona, and the moody rocker China White.
I can’t imagine a fan of 80′s hard rock picking this disc up and being disappointed. This is definitely one of the best Scorpions discs out there, and you can get this one for less than $10.00 today. Blackout is a disc still worth picking up in 2007. Don’t miss out on this classic disc!

Asphalt Ballet’s name comes from a motorcycle crashing at high speed and sliding across the pavement. Their music is no accident, even though the band eventually crashed and burned.
The self title debut from 1991 is a damn good one, by this San Diego five piece unit.
This CD blends the west coast sleaze sound with southern rock. It may sound like a strange combination, but it works.
Asphalt Ballet was a regular on the MTV headbanger’s ball back in the early 90′s. Three videos were released in support of this disc:
After this release, the band was pushed to alter their sound to grunge, so they could stay current in the music scene. Needless to say, that decision would spell their demise.
I would have loved to have heard another disc, in the vein of this one, with the original band’s lineup in tact. I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.
This CD has several good songs including Hell’s Kitchen, Blood on the Highway, Goodbye Yesterday , and the three songs featured in the videos above.
Singer, Gary Jeffries has been in several bands since Asphalt Ballet, and is currently in a Dayton, Ohio band called Gary Jeffries and the Gator Stew Band. Guitarist Julius Ulrich, and drummer Michael Kiner are in a Hollywood Metal band called 13-A.
This disc has been out of print for a while, and regularly goes for over $20.00 on Ebay right now. This disc will appeal to most sleaze and southern rock fans. I like this one a lot. If you can find it, buy it, you won’t be disappointed.

I hesitated picking this disc up for a long time, as I didn’t hear too many good things about it. When I stumbled upon a used copy of this disc recently, the completest in me had to have it. Luckily, I tracked a copy of this down for a mere $4.00, and at that price I couldn’t pass it up.
How do the songs stack up? Chances are you have heard Poison’s cover of the Who’s “Squeeze Box“on the new disc, Poison’d. I will pass on that cover every time. This disc is no Flesh and Blood. Not even close. There are however, a few decent songs on this disc. Get Ya Some, Devil Woman, Wasteland and Rockstar are ok, but not excellent songs.
The songs sung by CC Deville, “Emperor’s New Clothes“, “Livin’ In the Now” and “Home (C.C’s Story)” are particularly bad, and I can’t listen to them a second time. If CC wants to sing, I think he needs to do it in his side project, Samantha 7. His vocals are far too different from Bret’s, and contrast the other songs on Hollyweird greatly.
To me, Bret Michaels IS the voice of Poison, and it needs to stay that way. I love Poison, but I think they can do much better than this.

For some reason, I feel compelled to keep buying the latest releases by Yngwie Malmsteen. Luckily, I scored this disc for a whopping $3.00, so I figured it was worth the risk, in case I didn’t enjoy it.
Attack features the former voice of Rainbow, Doogie White, former Dream Theater keyboardist Derek Sherinian, and longtime drummer Patrick Johansson.
As much as I try to get into Attack!!, I have trouble doing so. There is no question, that Yngwie Malmsteen is an extremely talented guitar player, but as a song writer, I think he may be a little lacking. Attack!! features plenty of neo-classical guitar noodling, and light speed double bass drumming, but the songs lack heart, or anything that make you want to listen to them a second time. Most of these songs are just a high speed jam sessions with lyrics thrown in for good measure.
If you heard one Malmsteen song on Attack!!, you have heard them all. If you have to listen to this disc, check out the track Stronghold. This song has some Dio era Black Sabbath like elements to it, and is this CD’s sole redeeming track.
This isn’t a disc that I will not be recommending to anyone, except the die hard fans of Yngwie. Now, I know why I was able to pick this up for $3.00.

Lita Ford-Out for blood/Dancin’ on the edge
The kind people at BGO (Beat goes on) records recently re-mastered Lita Ford’s first two releases and stuck them on one disc. I used to have both titles on cassette back in the 1980’s, but have not heard either since the early 90’s. Ultimately it seems that her debut is not quite as good as I remembered it while the sophomore effort is perhaps even better than I recalled it being. Out for blood sounds a little like Ford’s previous band the Runaways at times. So it was even slightly dated for 1983 and it’s more rock with hard rock undertones. It’s decent, but a little clunk y at times as the band seems to be reaching to establish a style and the slightly fuzzy production also makes it sound a little amateurish. Still it’s lively and energetic for the most part.
Dancin’ on the edge (originally released in 1984) is the real prize here though. It’s obvious that someone with some say wanted Lita to go in a more hard rock direction and she does with some proficiency. The production values are much stronger than the debut with a more professional sound. Also Lita’s vocals are way more focused and powerful here. I think she also manages to somewhat establish her own guitar style as well. Unfortunately she didn’t really follow up on this guitar style on her later albums. As far as the level of heaviness I would say the overall sound might be comparable to what Ratt or KISS were doing at the same time. The one thing that maybe really makes this album is that the band manages to keep the songs interesting by having new riffs interjected down the stretch. This is done on several songs and it keeps the music from being too repetitious which is a trap that too many hard rock artists fell into. This version is re-mastered and overall sounds fine. There are no bonus tracks, but there is a thick booklet with some history about what Lita Ford did between the end of the Runaways and when she finally did these these two albums. It runs about $21-23 so that’s not bad for two complete albums.

There were a couple of videos on MTV for the songs Shot Gun Sally and Her Monkey, but this release got lost in a sea other big hair rock that was released at the time. Kicked & Klawed is a very solid release that is often over looked.
Lead Singer, Joel Ellis reminds me a lot of a young Vince Neil. Takashi “Jam” O’Hashi proves to be a very solid guitarist. Not surprisingly, the music isn’t too much of a stretch past Motley Crue’s music, but it is a very good listen. My favorite tracks include Shot Gun Sally, Nine Lives, Her Monkey, and Evil Angel.

Kicked and Klawed has been out of print for several years now, and has been pulling down twenty to thirty dollars on Ebay each time it shows. It is a solid sleaze metal disc that is still worth seeking out.

This disc was produced, recorded and mixed by Michael Wagener (Ozzy, Dokken, Metallica, Motley Crue) which explains the near perfect sound on this disc.
Alice Cooper has a very good band backing him up on this release: Kane Roberts on guitar, Kip Winger on bass, Ken Mary on drums, and Paul Horowitz on keyboards.
This is definitely 80′s style metal, but it is lacking a lot (but not all) of the cheese found on his late 80′s releases, Trash and Hey Stoopid.
Kane Roberts guitar work on this disc is very good. There is plenty of solos to sink your teeth into. Kip Winger surprises me how good he is on bass here. I can hear some of the bass sounds that are commonplace on the future Winger discs here.
Most of lyrics are fairly simple on this record, but that is ok, as the songs are definitely rocking!
The opening track Freedom just explodes on this disc. This is very cool stuff!
Lock Me Up keeps the energy going with an upbeat rocker, with a sing along chorus. This is a fun song.
Give the Radio Back is a song that is kind of silly, yet terribly infectious. I bet you will find yourself singing “give the radio back to the maniac” in no time.
One of the songs that has got a lot of repeated plays from me is Step on You. Kane Roberts has some very tasty guitar licks on this song.
Not That Kind of Love has this killer bass groove that will get you headbanging in no time. Great Stuff!
Another song that seems to jump out at me every time is Prince of Darkness. This is another song that is very catchy.
Time to Kill is another solid track with excellent guitar work by Kane Roberts.
I can deal with a goofy tune now and then, but Chop, Chop, Chop might be a little bit too silly, even for me.
Gail is a horror like, keyboard driven tune, that doesn’t really add anything to Raise Your Fist and Yell, except to cement Alice Cooper’s love of the horror element into the music.
Roses on White Lace isn’t the best album closer, but it is listenable. The chorus is kind of catchy, and the music is good.
As a whole, I have enjoyed Raise Your Fist and Yell. It is a good CD, and one that is still worth picking up in 2007.
This disc is still in print, and can be purchased at Amazon.com for less than $10.00. At that price, this disc is a steal. If you don’t own this one, check it out. I think you will like it. I am surprised that I didn’t buy this one up sooner. This is must own for 80′s hard rock and hair metal fans.

I must admit that Hell to Pay gives me a small glimmer of hope for Dokken’s up and coming 2007 release, Lightning Strikes Again.
The sound on Hell to Pay is far more subdued that the band’s previous efforts with Lynch and Pilson. There are a few rockers on this disc, but you have to sift through the sludge to find them.
Don’t Bring Me Down is a high tempo rocker with plenty of excellent guitar work by Jon Levin. Don Dokken is in fine vocal form here.
Escape is a low to mid-tempo number that has grown on me after repeated listens. It is an above average track
Better Off Before retains the sound of classic Dokken. There is plenty of guitar noodling and crunching bass in this song. Good Stuff!
Still I’m Sad is a cool song with haunting guitars. It is a mid-tempo number that rocks hard.
Hell to Play still has plenty of misses, and mixing seems a little strange to me. Most people by a Dokken record because they want to hear something that rocks. Hell to Pay starts off with a semi mellow song, The Last Goodbye. It has a few rocking moments, but seems like a odd choice to open the disc with. There are several other songs in this vein, Haunted, Care For You, I Surrender, Letter To Home, Can You See. None of these songs are particularly bad, but they don’t rock as hard as they should.
Does this release compare to the George Lynch and Jeff Pilson releases? No, not even close. This isn’t the kind of release that will get your adrenaline pumping. John Levin’s playing is very good, but Hell to Pay suffers from too many low to mid tempo songs, and not enough songs that rock hard.
I think with the right material, the 4 piece unit of Don Dokken, Mick Brown, Barry Sparks and Jon Levin could probably rock pretty hard. Hopefully, their sophomore effort with this lineup is heavier that this one.
Hell to Pay, is an above average release that will appeal to some. Some Dokken fans may want to use this as a frisbee.

This debut by Montrose launched the career of the Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar. Even as far back as ’73, Sammy had great pipes. His excellent vocals are practically indistinguishable from his newer stuff today.
Ronnie Montrose’s guitar licks are heavily influenced by Jeff Beck on this album. His exceptional playing on this record easily carried on that same tradition, by influencing future guitar virtuosos well into the 80′s and beyond.
This album may not be the most commercially successful disc of all time, but it still deserves mentioning in 2007. There are plenty of songs on this disc that still sound great without being dated. Check out Rock the Nation, Bad Motor Scooter and Rock Candy.
This disc is still a gem in my collection, that I need to play from time to time. It is essential listening for all hard rock, and Sammy Hagar fans! It can be picked up from Amazon.com for less than 10 bucks. It is worth the price!

This Michael Wagener produced disc features Ron Keel on vocals, Marc Ferrari and Brian Jay on guitar, Kenny Chaisson on bass, and Dwain Miller on drums.
This is a another disc that I have owned on multiple formats. I wore my cassette tape of this out years ago, and was quick to pick it up on CD once that happened.
This disc has a bunch of excellent hard rock tunes and a solid power ballad, Calm Before the Storm. My favorite songs are Somebody’s Waiting, Cherry Lane, King of the Rock and I Said the Wrong Thing to the Right Girl.
If I had to compare Keel to other bands from the same time period, I would say that they are closest to Dokken. Ron Keel belts the vocals out with his melodic screams, and Marc Ferrari has many impressive guitar solos throughout this release.
It should be a crime, that a CD this good is out of print. The only way you are going to find this one now is through EBay, Gemm, or some expensive used copies through Amazon.com.

I am probably one of a small group of people that was looking forward to the new disc, Waters Rising by Lillian Axe. I have been a fan of this band since I heard their self titled debut back in 1988. I fear that I may be a little more critical of this release than most.
Much like a lot of the bands from the late 80′s and early 90′s, Lillian Axe has had its fair share of membership changes. In 2007, lead guitarist Steve Blaze finds himself the lone original member of Lillian Axe. The band has a new singer, Derrick LeFevre, and three additional new members, Sam Poitevent on guitar, Eric Morris on bass, and Ken Koudelka on bass.
The band’s sound is a little more mature, but still very close to that on the previous releases. Derrick LeFevre doesn’t have the range of former L.A. singer, Ron Taylor, however with the back up vocals of Steve Blaze, its a minor difference.
I have listened to this CD a few times now. On the first listen, I was disappointed. Each time I spin this disc, it seems to get a little better.
With so many new members in the band, I believe it was critical for Lillian Axe to establish their sound quickly on the first track. Luckily, the title track, Waters Rising starts the disc off nicely with a sound that all Lillian Axe fans are going to flock to. Antarctica is a heavy song that keeps the pace going. I didn’t care for this song at first, but its definitely growing on. Steve Blaze has some very good guitar work on this track.
It is hard for me not to like Become a Monster. This song has a killer groove. The song could have been shortened up a little bit, and it would have been a bit better. It is still a solid song.
The guitars on Quarantine takes this song down a heavy path, that twists and winds itself around a classic rock type of sound. It is almost like two songs in one. Very cool!
I Have to Die, Goodbye starts off with a guitar sound that reminds me of the beginning of Queensryche’s Silent Lucidity. This song mixes both acoustic and electric guitars. Between the mix of guitar sounds, and the extremely deep voiced back up vocals, I just could not get into this tune.
Fear of Time is a heavier tune that captures the classic sound of Lillian Axe perfectly. This is my early favorite on the record.
Until the End of the World is an extremely cool song that almost approaches progressive metal, but some how stays grounded with a base in 80′s style hard rock. This song is another favorite of mine.
I have an issue with Fields of Yesterday, and Deep in the Black. Both of these songs are way too long. Both songs clock in at 8:30. After five minutes, I am ready to move on to another song. To me, it messed up the pacing of the record.
Thirst and The 2nd of May are solid numbers, but not essential.
5 closes out this disc with a heavy instrumental that is nearly thrash metal. I don’t usually get into instrumentals very much, but this is very cool.
I have listened to Waters Rising several times now, and I will admit that this is my least favorite Lillian Axe disc out of the bunch. It isn’t bad, but I find myself getting a little bored at the last third of the album. Each listener may feel differently, and I am sure the Lillian Axe diehards will be happy with this effort. I just don’t think it is as strong as some of their prior releases.

This is a five piece band led by singer, Hell Hofer, Hampus Klang on lead guitar, Erik Almström also on lead guitar, Gustav Hjortsjö on drums, and Adam Hector on bass.
If you can get past the gravelly voice of Hell Hofer, you are probably going to like, and possibly even love this band. The guitar work on this disc is superb and it rocks hard, from beginning to end. Heading for the Top sounds as if this was a lost disc from the NWOBHM era.
I have spun this one a few times now, and I don’t think there is a bad song on this disc. Check out the video for Heading For the Top, if you like what you hear, you will like this disc a lot.

Whether you like them or not, few band’s have experienced the level of success that AC/DC has achieved. AC/DC’s Back In Black has sold over 42 million units worldwide, making it one of the must successful releases in music history. Most bands would be happy if their entire catalog sold this amount.
After the death of Bon Scott, the band soldiered on. No one knew how this release would turn out. This is the band’s first disc featuring singer Brian Johnson. With Mutt Lange at the helm as producer, the band crafted their most popular release ever.
From the opening bells of Hells Bells, you know this is going to be a classic record. It is rare for me to listen to a whole CD all the way through, and not have a song or two that I don’t like. This is not the the case with Back in Black.
I love all of the songs on this disc, by my absolute favorites are Shoot To Thrill, Back In Black, You Shook Me All Night Long, Have A Drink on Me, and Shake a Leg.
This is a disc that stands up well, and does not sound dated in 2007. I can’t think of one thing I would change on this record.
It is a hard rock/metal landmark release that no collection should be without. If you don’t own this, what are you waiting for. 42 Million people can’t be wrong!

Whether it was over saturation of the hair metal music market, or the introduction of grunge, Jesse Strange’s self titled debut is a release that vanished off the face of the earth almost as quickly as it got released. I was finally able to replace my old cassette with a shiny new CD, so I decided to give this one a few spins this week.
Fans of 80′s hard rock should eat up these tunes that I would describe a cross between Great White, Kix and Steelheart.
This is a solid debut by this four piece band featuring Grant Tibor on Lead Vocals, Scott Migone on Guitar, Paul Trust on Drums and Keyboards, and Danny Lullie on Bass.
This is a fun disc, full of fat guitar riffs, sing along choruses, and overall very good pop metal tunes. It is almost comical how this CD falls into that typical late 8o’s formula of two big rockers and a ballad. Raise A Little Hell, and Love on the Telephone are quite good, and the power ballad Make a Wish, should have made this band a household name. This song was penned by Jesse Harms (Sammy Hagar, Eddie Money, REO Speedwagon). Strangely enough, Beau Nasty did this song as well, but this version is better.
After the first three tracks, I found myself starting to lose interest, so I decided to spin the disc again later to be fair.
On the second pass, I liked Silver Screen a lot more. The guitar work of Scott Migone is superb on this track. Weekend Tonight is another fun sing songy tune. This reminds me a lot of some of Poison’s earlier tracks. I couldn’t really get into Coyote Morning, but I do like Down and Dirty. This song kind of reminds me of Heaven’s Edge a little bit.
Living Without Your Love could have been a better song with a little work, but after hearing this a second time, it sounds kind of generic. Dancing with Strangers didn’t work for me either. This song was good until it got to the chorus, and it went down hill from there.
The Last Goodbye closes this disc with a piano based power ballad. This is another song that needed a little more polish. It is very good musically, but the lyrics should have been arranged so that it was more of a sing along type song. Instead, singer Grant Tabor gets a few Steve Whiteman like screeches in.
A big name producer could have taken this album and rearranged some parts, and improved this album greatly. This debut was produced by the band, and some of the songs lack the punch they needed. As a whole, there are certainly some good songs on this release, which makes it a disc for hair metal fans to seek out.
The band released a new CD in 2006, with all of their unreleased material called Looking For Some Strange. The band is not currently together. Grant Tibor has turned up in a new band called The Blackstone Project, while Scott Migone is a Florida based band called Philth.
You can pick up used copies of this out of print disc for less than $10.00 off of Amazon.com and EBay. At that price, it is hard to pass this one up.

The five piece Minnesota band formerly known as Skywynd, has changed their name to Crash Anthem, and released a new disc, Inside A Red Room. Candlebox singer, Kevin Martin produced this 10 track disc.
Inside A Red Room, is a very polished sounding modern hard rock record. Crash Anthem is one of the better, new U.S. hard rock acts I have heard in a while. They are melodic, without falling into the bass heavy trap that so many new mainstream acts are stuck in today.
Singer, Walter Joseph’s vocals are clean, and easy to listen to. The keyboards give the songs an almost alternative touch, but do not over power the tracks. Most importantly, all of the 10 songs on Inside A Red Room rock hard!
Catch Me If you Can is an energetic rocker. I love the rhythm on this song. The cowbells mixed with the drumming give this song a lot of energy. This is a very cool way to start off this disc.
Favorite Things is a very upbeat song. This song kind of reminds me of what Velvet Revolver is doing today, and may be a little better than that.
Me, Myself and You is a cool moody rocker. This song rocks hard but has a very nice layer of keyboards. Good Stuff!
I love the crunching guitars on Red Room. This song is heavy enough to get you head banging, but he keyboards level it out. As a whole, it is another superb track.
Walter Joseph belts out the notes in a higher pitch on Typical People. This track could easily be a hit on rock radio.
I could not get into A Time for the Kill. This song has a couple of U2 like moments, but I think it drags on a little too much. Biggest Letdown on the other hand is not a letdown at all. This one of the heavier tracks on Inside A Red Room. It is short, but a it is worth hearing. This up tempo rocker is one of my favorites on this record.
Walter Joseph’s vocals on Follow the Leader remind me of someone else greatly, especially during the song chorus, but I haven’t been able to figure out who. I like this song a lot.
Life Story is a multi tempo number that has heavy and melodic parts. I played this one three times in a row after my first listen to it. Cool song!
Wrecking Ball is another song that tends to drag on a little bit. It has a nice guitar solo in the middle by Brian Adams, but the Piano piece in the middle of the song by Jon Storm seems out of place.
As a whole, I really enjoyed Inside A Red Room. Crash Anthem is a band that has a lot of radio potential. It is only a matter of time before this band gets the mainstream success they deserve.

I am not exactly sure what it is about Soulidium that I like so much. I can’t say they are breaking new ground musically. The music on Children of Chaos, is quite comparable to a lot of the metal music that is on rock radio stations today. Usually, I am not too fond of the modern approach to metal, but I am able to accept it in limited doses.
The band does have a little bit of a shock rock element going on, and I do have an affection for the whole horror element. The first time I saw a picture of singer, Michael McNight, I had to jump back for a second. Maybe its the whole vampire image, but nonetheless, it works for me. It is something different, even though the band’s sound isn’t exactly new. The band has also released a couple of videos using that creepy horror element to their advantage!
Soulidium has a sound that reminds me of a cross between Filter, Tool and Breaking Benjamin. There are a few songs on this disc, that I have grown to like pretty well including, Trapped, The Light, Live Forever and Drama. All of these songs are radio ready. In fact, I have heard The Light on Squizz on XMRadio.
My only problem with this disc is this, some of the songs are so bass centric, they tend to run together and lose their own individual identity. A lot of newer bands are guilty of this, and Soulidium is no exception.
Nonetheless, I think Soulidium will gain a moderate level of success with this release. I am glad I checked this one out.

Usually, I know most of the new bands that are being introduced, but strangely enough not Priestess. This Canadian quartet are one of the many bands that are pioneering the Retro Rock movement. I have heard a few people call this stoner rock, but I don’t know if I completely agree with that assessment.
There are some definite stoner like elements in the band’s music, but Hello Master sounds like a brand new classic rock/metal CD. I can hear the influence of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath in the band’s music, but they are not a copycat act by any means.
This 4 piece band is led by Mike Heppner on vocals, Dan Watchorn on guitar, Mike Dyball on bass, and Vince Nudo on drums. It took me a while to put my finger on it, but Mike Heppner’s vocals remind me of Glenn Danzig.
The songs Lay Down, Run Home, and Talk To Her are among my favorites and good selections for videos.
Talk To Her
Hello Master appears to be one of those CD’s that grows on you with repeated listens. The songs, Time Will Cut You Down, I am the Night, Colour Me Black, and Blood have grown on me quite a bit.
This CD is one that classic rock fans, and quite a few hard rock fans are going to enjoy. Priestess will certainly be a band worth keeping an eye on in 2007. For information on Priestess, check out the band’s website here, or their myspace page here.

Twisted Sister is one of the few popular 80′s hard rock bands that I never had the opportunity to see live. When they close out the Rocklahoma Music Festival Sunday Night, I am sure they will put on an incredible show.
Aside from their live performances that I watched on their recent DVD, Twisted Sister: The Video Years, Live at the Hammersmith was the only way I had to experience the energy of a live Twisted Sister show.
This CD captures one of the live shows during the band’s Stay Hungry tour at the Hammersmith Theater in London, and a couple of tracks from 1979 in Detroit before the band was signed. This CD doesn’t cut out anything. Dee Snider talks to the audience with plenty of expletives. More importantly, the band rocks, and rocks hard. What amazes me the most is how different the tempo is on the live songs, versus the studio recordings. The Live tracks are played heavier and faster, which tells me that Twisted Sister is a better live band, than the one you hear on the studio discs.
The covers of Jailhouse Rock and Train Kept a Rolling are very cool. This CD is the only place that I am aware of where you will here Twisted Sister perform these songs.
The Rocklahoma Music Festival will likely be successful enough to create several more of these open air type music festivals in the United States. When this event happens next year, hopefully Twisted Sister will return. Until then, I will enjoy Live at Hammersmith to get my fill of live Twisted Sister. If you are a Twisted Sister fan, don’t even hesitate picking this up. It is essential to your collection!

In 2003, Vince Neil released a live CD, Live at the Whisky. Vince rarely plays his solo stuff live, and this CD is similar to the set I saw in Cincinnati. It was all Motley Crue tunes then, and this Live disc is all Motley Crue songs with the exception of Look In Her Eyes.
Tonight at 11:30 P.M., Vince Neil is taking the stage as the Headliner at the Rocklahoma Music Festival. I must admit that the show that I saw locally was far better than the set recorded at the Whisky. The band that he has with him now, Dana Strum and Jeff Blando from Slaughter, does a better job on the Motley Crue tunes that the band that Vince has with him on this release: Brent Wood (Wildside) on Guitar, Jamie Hunting (Union) on Bass, and Brent Fitz (Union) on Drums.
Even as a solo act though Vince Neil gives his all when performing Motley Crue tunes. When Vince and company takes the stage tonight, I am sure they will not disappoint too many people, unless of course people are expecting to hear tunes off of Exposed or Carved in Stone.
Vince Neil, Live at the Whisky is not Vince Neil’s best effort, but it is far from his worst. It is still fun to hear these songs performed live, even the though the band is no where near the caliber of Motley Crue.

Tonight at 11:30, on July 13th 2007, Poison hits the stage as the Headlining Band on Day 2 of the Rocklahoma Music Festival.
Luckily, I saw Poison play live a few weeks ago, so I am not as broken up about missing them play live as I am some of the other bands on the Rocklahoma Music Festival. When they hit Cincinnati, they put on one of the best live shows, that I have ever seen them do, and would gladly go to see them play live again. Until that day happens, I have a copy of Poison’s 1991 2 CD Set, Swallow This Live.
Some people don’t like live CD’s. I used to dislike them at one point in time, but I enjoy them now more than ever. There is nothing better than capturing the energy of a live show on CD. Swallow This Live does a very good job and capturing a live Poison show while they were in their prime.
Amazingly, Poison still sounded this good when I saw them live a few short weeks ago. The CD includes a drum solo by Rikki Rockett and a guitar solo by CC Deville, so it really gives you the feel of being at a live show. The collection also includes a few bonus studio tracks, So Tell Me Why, Souls on Fire, Only Time Will Tell, and No More Lookin’ Back. This doesn’t enhance the live experience, but it is nice to have a few studio tracks that weren’t available anywhere else.
After listening to Swallow This Live from beginning to end, it only made me envy those lucky folks heading to Rocklahoma today. They are bound to see a great show from Poison tonight when they close out the 2nd day of festivities.
If you don’t own Swallow This Live, pick it up! It is essential for all Poison fans.

At 3 P.M. Thursday, July 12, The First Annual Rocklahoma Music Festival Begins! The Thursday shows were added as an added bonus for those individuals that purchased the three day ticket (Friday through Sunday).
Lillian Axe was a last minute replacement for Tigertailz, who were unable to travel due to Pepsi Tate’s ongoing cancer treatments.
I am disappointed that I could not attend, as it has been years since I have been able to see Lillian Axe play live. Lucky for me, I have a handy copy of the Lillian Axe release, Live 2002. It may not be as good as being there live, but I get more songs this way. 21 to be exact, for over 90 minutes of music.
This live collection has just about all of the Lillian Axe tunes you can use prior to their new, Waters Rising disc. Live 2002 captures Lillian Axe in fine form! The band lineup on this disc is Steve Blaze on Lead Guitar & Vocals, Ron Taylor on Vocals, Darrin DeLatte on Bass Guitar, Sam Poitevent on Guitar and Vocals, and Ken Koudelka on Drums.
The sound on this disc is very good for being a live collection. It isn’t studio quality, but it is damn close. If you are fan of this band, you need to check this out.

On Live for Tomorrow, Marco handles the vocals and the bass, and has a pretty stellar lineup of axe slingers helping him out, including Richie Kotzen (Poison), Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake), Ted Nugent, Steve Lukather (Toto). Tommy Aldridge (Whitesnake) and Brian Tichy (Pride and Glory) handle the drumming.
Marco Mendoza has a vocal style that is a blend between David Coverdale and Paul Rodgers. This record is a bluesy, hard rocking affair that is going to appeal to a lot of rock fans. Marco’s influences don’t stray far from the bands that he has played in, and the guitar work on this disc is superb. Some of the stand out tracks are, I Want You, Let the Sun Shine, In My Face, Broken and the title Track Live For Tomorrow.
Don’t Miss This! You are going to love it!

This band features former Keel guitar player Marc Ferrari, ex-Wasted guitarist Erik Gamans, bassist Chris McLernon, drummer Anthony White, and singer Rory Cathey.
Break Out is a very solid 80′s style hard rock disc that is often forgotten about. Marc Ferrari’s guitar work on this CD is superb. This disc doesn’t have a band song on it, and even features a writing credit on Four on the Floor by current KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer.
Let’s Make Love Tonight
This disc has it all! A great power ballad in Waiting in Vain, and a bunch of excellent hard rockers: Four on the Floor, Take This Heart of Mine, Let’s Make Love Tonight and Fistful of Money. This disc also has a pretty cover of the Foghat song, I Just Want to Make Love To You.
This long out of print CD often sells for 20 or more dollars on EBay, but can often be found for lesser amounts. It is a disc well worth seeking out if you are a fan of 80′s hard rock and glam metal. Buy Break Out if you can! You will love it!

The major question people are asking is, has the band gone into a sophomore slump, or does “Libertad” surpass the debut release “Contraband”.
I have listened to “Contraband” quite a bit, and believe “Libertad” surpasses the first disc, and has more potential for hits than its predecessor. “Libertad” however is a grower. I didn’t get into it completely on the first listen. Some of the songs definitely get better with repeated listening.
The first single seems like an odd choice to me. There are more infectious songs that “She Builds Quick” machines on this disc.
She Builds Quick Machines
I actually think the opening cut, “Let it Roll” is a better song. It is a heavier track with superb guitar work and a great bass groove. “She Mine” is another song that is really growing on me.
My early favorite off of this disc is “Get Out the Door“. This is song is quite infectious, and has an awesome beat. “Pill, Demons & Etc.” is also very catchy. Slash’s playing on this track is excellent. I am betting that “American Man” is going to get a lot of radio airplay before the end of 2007. I like this song a lot.
“The Last Fight” almost has a Tom Petty style about it. This song is about as close to “Fall to Pieces” as you are going to get on “Libertad“. This song has radio hit written all over it.
I will admit that there are a couple of songs that I didn’t care for. The Album closer “Gravedancer” sounds closer to the Rolling Stones, and this country flavored rock doesn’t work for me. The song “Spay” was a little too noisy for my tastes.
The cover of the Jeff Lynne penned ELO track, “Can’t Get it Out of My Head” seems out of place too.
The music on this disc is probably more like STP than Guns ‘N Roses. “Libertad” should bring Velvet Revolver continued success well into 2008. It is another solid offering by these hard rock veterans!

When I initially purchased a copy of The Answer’s disc Rise, I downloaded it off of ITunes to save the expense of importing the disc. When the news came across that the Answer was re-releasing the CD in June of 2007 with a 2nd Bonus CD, with B-Sides and 5 new songs, I knew that I would not be able to hold off on buying this disc any longer.
I reviewed the initial release here. After a few months of listening to this first CD, I probably should have rated this disc higher. Rise continues to stay in my play list months after I first purchased it.
The thing that is completely mind-boggling to me is, the United States has not yet got to know the awesome band, as they do not have a U.S. distribution deal. Any band that is armed with so many great songs and videos should be playing on U.S. soil. This collection of tunes is strong enough to garner multi-platinum success for this band.

This new release only solidifies what I already knew. The Answer is one of the best new rock bands out there.
The new songs are great, and the inclusion of Keep Believin’ from the 2005 EP is extremely cool.
I Won’t Let You Down is another Answer style rock anthem that could easily support another single and video. The cover of Aerosmith’s Sweet Emotion is fantastic. While staying true to the original, Cormac Neeson handles the vocals of Steven Tyler quite well. The track Doctor has plenty of bluesy swagger, and So Cold has such a good beat that it could get the ladies out on the dance floor.
The songs Not Listening and Take it Easy have plenty of Led Zeppelin influence on them and are equally great.
If you haven’t picked up The Answer disc Rise yet, pick up the Special Edition version. The second disc gives you plenty of new tunes to listen to, on top of the superb original release. If you like classic hard rock, The Answer has the rock cd for you. Classic Rock Magazine calls this the “Best Debut Rock album of the decade“. I don’t disagree with that statement. The Answer has out done themselves with this collection! You can find the Rise – Special Edition at CD Universe. Go Get it! You wont be disappointed!
