Rival Sons

Maximum-blues-infused, rock ’n’ roll band RIVAL SONS are excited to announce a 14-city tour beginning August 20 with stops including Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Louis and Lake Tahoe, wrapping in San Francisco September 7 (full tour itinerary below). The Long Beach, CA-based group has been invited to perform a select number of shows with one of their hometown heroes, Sammy Hagar, on his “Four Decades of Rock” summer tour.

Guitarist Scott Holiday says, “Well, we’re finally hittin’ our homeland for a handful of tour dates. Ask and ye shall receive! And what a cool thing to get to go out and support a legend…and super cool fella like Mr. Sammy Hagar! I think this one’s gonna be a blast.”

Hagar has been a fan of the Rival Sons for a while, since he first heard their 2009 debut Before The Fire.  “These guys are the real thing,” says Hagar.  “Their first CD was great, showing off a lot of styles from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. These boys have done their homework…now road-tested. The Sons have made a CD (Head Down) that truly lives up to the band’s name. This is a giant step from a great previous CD…not easy.  But for those that like classic rock but are tired of the same old songs, I highly recommend this CD…and even better, go see ’em live–they deliver.” Hagar and RIVAL SONS frontman, Jay Buchanan, come from the same town of Fontana, CA.

RIVAL SONS—Jay Buchanan (vocals), Scott Holiday (guitar), Robin Everhart (bass) and Michael Miley (drums)–just concluded an international headlining tour with shows in Canada, Europe and the U.K. as well as a string of dates in the Midwest U.S. May 29-June 4. REAL DETROIT WEEKLY recently noted of their packed show at St. Andrew’s Hall: “These guys not only have the sound, but the look and the mojo to make anyone pay attention.” (6/5) EXAMINER.com exclaimed of the show at Reggie’s in Chicago, “Rival Sons cast a spell…” (6/9)

The band is on the road supporting their third album HEAD DOWN (released March 19th on Century Media Records), which reached #1 on the Rock chart in 2012 in the U.K., garnered the group four-star reviews (including Mojo and the Guardian) overseas as well as magazine covers and the “Breakthrough Artist” award at the 2012 Classic Rock Awards show in London. The album features “Keep On Swinging,” which hit #1 on the Active Rock Radio Charts in Canada and remained at the top for six straight weeks.  The band made their major national television debut when they performed “Keep On Swinging” on ABC-TV’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in March, which can be viewed here: http://www.hulu.com/watch/464788

RIVAL SONS are also set to perform two shows at the Telluride Festival, July 13 in Colorado.  They’ll perform a main stage show during the day along with Steve Earle, Rodrigo y Gabriela and Big Head Todd & The Monsters.  They’ll also perform a headlining show that night at Telluride’s Sheridan Opera House.  See the full line-up here: http://www.ridefestival.com/home/schedule/

About RIVAL SONS:

Long Beach band Rival Sons are a raucous, maximum-blues-infused, rock ‘n’ roll band that explode with the rhythm and thrill of some of the greatest live acts of all time. From their 2011 album Pressure & Time to this year’s breakthrough Head Down the strength of their live performances has gained the band major attention everywhere. Recent accolades include, a stint opening up for Guns ‘n’ Roses last year, plus legends like Judas Priest, AC/DC and Alice Cooper, and playing the likes of Download festival, Rock Am Ring, Sonisphere, T in the Park, to name a few European festivals.

Head Down charted at number 1 in the UK rock charts for several weeks and number 31 in the UK national chart. The band’s intense work agenda (with an aim to release an album a year), plus their grueling live schedule, have won the band a reputation for hard-graft. In the studio the band commit themselves to creating an experience that closely matches the attitude and excitement of their live performance. Right off a four-week stint on the road, Rival Sons wrote, recorded, and mixed the album in just twenty days; ensuring rawness for both the listener and the band.

In October 2012, Rival Sons finished up their UK leg of the sold out European “Head Down” tour with a fantastic show at the Electric Ballroom, introduced on stage by legendary presenter Bob Harris (of the Old Grey Whistle Test), and with Jimmy Page in the audience.

Bob Harris: “Absolutely love this band…I had such a great night with them when they played in London, I introduced them onstage, Jimmy Page turned up backstage just before the band went onstage it was an incredible evening and I really think they’re something special…”

Garnering fans amongst music-lovers, celebrities, indie-kids, rockers and comedians alike…

Juliette Lewis: “Holy shit! I think you’re my new fave band!! Good god I love your groove!”

Vic Reeves (comedian): “The new Rival Sons LP kicks your arse way off into outer space them retrieves it and kisses it goodnight.”

And last week, Corey Taylor cited the band as his new favorite on “That Metal Show” with Eddie Trunk saying, “My favorite new band…it’s the Rival Sons. They are really good.  There is something about that band that is very Zeppelin-esque. The best 70s album that nobody ever heard.”

At the end of last year Classic Rock magazine made Rival Sons the cover stars of their November issue, and Head Down was voted the no.2 album of the year by the editorial team. Despite the achievements and following Rival Sons have already attained, any member of the band will say creating quality music and leaving a lasting impression is what matters most, and now they hope to convert their home country as they have already converted Europe.

More Praise For RIVAL SONS’ HEAD DOWN here:

“…Rival Sons are doggedly establishing themselves as a vital force for the modern age…the Californians’ third album is a riotous carnival of Zep-saluting riffs, sunkissed psychedelia and irresistible hooks, with the band’s soul, funk and blues influences thrust joyously to the fore…If you thrilled to the Black Keys’ El Camino, it’s time to meet your new favourite band.”
—GUARDIAN (UK), September 13, 2012 (4-out-of-5 star review)

“You know the guys who complain today’s rock doesn’t hold a candle to the ’70s stuff?
They haven’t heard this.”
—USA TODAY, November 13, 2012

“There’s a soulfulness and strut which puts them in a different league.”
—UNCUT (U.K.) August 1, 2011

“Balls-to-the-walls blues-rawk!…undeniable.”
—NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, October 7, 2012

“Bluesy, ballsy and real.”
—AOL’s NOISECREEP.COM, November 12, 2012

“…they sure as hell are a good time.”
—PENTHOUSE, February 23, 2013

“This is a band of storytellers and Head Down is their manifesto…”
—VINTAGEROCK.COM, December 17, 2012

“Jay Buchanan uncorks a quavering vocal over Scott Holiday’s buzz-bomb guitar playing and Michael Miley’s barely controlled bashing of drums…it sounds like something Jimmy Page’s pre-Zeppelin band, the Yardbirds, might have done…‘A’ grade.”

—CAMPUS CIRCLE, November 14, 2012

“The grooves are deep and the vocals are of the chest-beating variety…”

— MUSICRADAR.COM, December 6, 2012

“Rival Sons give rock ‘n’ roll a much needed kick in the ass…It’s as timeless as it is tough, and it’s everything rock music needs and more…”

—ARTISTDIRECT.COM, December 4, 2012

About RIVAL SONS:

RIVAL SONS are a raucous, maximum-blues-infused, hard rock band which explodes with the rhythm and roughness of some of the greatest rock acts of all time. From a self-released full-length album Before the Fire and EP (self-titled), to the strength of their live performances, the band gain major attention everywhere they play. Early accolades included a stint opening up for legends like AC/DC and Alice Cooper, several USO shows with Kid Rock, and a televised performance in the pit at The Indianapolis 500. The Huffington Post even dubbed RIVAL SONS as “one of the top 5 bands to watch” during 2010’s CMJ Music Marathon in New York City. RIVAL SONS’ full-length Earache debut, Pressure & Time, was recorded in Los Angeles and released worldwide in May 2011. The record quickly charted in the UK, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and beyond. And by the time RIVAL SONS embarked on their first full length headline tour of Europe in November 2011 they’d sold out every UK show, as well as gigs across the continent. The album was voted No.2 Album of the Year by Classic Rock Magazine. In 2012, they released Head Down, achieving greater success and acclaim.

Soulful, maximum-blues-infused hard rock band RIVAL SONS’ new album HEAD DOWN is out now on Earache Records and has garnered the band both critical acclaim (including a four-out-of-five star review from The Guardian/U.K.) and a “Breakthrough Artist” award at this week’s Classic Rock Awards show in London.Coming offof a five-week U.K./European headlining tour (having already played to massive crowds in Europe at festivals such as Rock Am Ring and Download, and opening for Guns N’ Roses), RIVAL SONS look to 2013 to showcase the record here in the U.S. with North American tour dates to be announced soon and the physical album hitting stores January 22, 2013.

HEAD DOWN reached #1 on the Rock chart in the U.K.  and “Keep on Swinging,” the first single off HEAD DOWN, was featured in last week’s USA Today’s “The Playlist” column, seen HERE.

With their blues bravado, raw riffing and unmatched mystique, the Long Beach, CA quartet evoke the rock of legendary bands like Led Zeppelin. Formed in 2008, the quartet of Scott Holiday (guitar), Robin Everhart (bass), Mike Miley (drums), and Jay Buchanan (vocals) captures that massively huge, guitar-driven classic rock sound, with rock-solid drumming and a riff-oriented approach to songwriting backing up Buchanan’s soaring vocals. The band  wrote, recorded, and mixed HEAD DOWN in just 20 days, and  the band conjured the same energy that made their last album a fan and critical favorite, while treading new territory altogether. The rawness and immediacy–textured with a myriad of light and shade–produce powerful results. Explains Buchanan: “In the code of the Samurai, any decision must be made between 3 and 5 breaths…Writing by that code forces us to act, go with our instincts and really, truly listen to each other. Creatively, you’re bringing your most immediate instincts.” The video for the first single “Keep On Swinging” from HEAD DOWN can be seen here: www.vevo.com/watch/rival-sons/keep-on-swinging/GBA631200133

We have been fans of classic rock music at Hard Rock Hideout for what seems like forever.  The last few years have been a very exciting time in rock and roll with the influx  of  revival rock bands hitting the scene.  One of the bands that have been a big part of the rock and roll revival, is Los Angeles, California’s Rival Sons.

I have been a fan of Rival Sons since I first listened to their CD, Pressure & Time. Needless to say, I was looking very forward to getting to see  Rival Sons play live for the very first time.  Rock at the Range gave me that opportunity, and the band did not disappoint. Scott Holiday’s wicked slide guitar, and Jay Buchanan’s powerful vocals rocked the huge crowd at the Jagermeister Stage at Rock on The Range.  If you missed Rival Sons performance, you truly missed out on a great up and coming band that you are going to be hearing a lot more about in the years to come.

If you haven’t check out their CD, Pressure & Time, check out the video clips below, and grab a copy of the CD at this link.  You will be glad you did!  The band recently finished recording their new album which will be released later this year.  More details about the new album coming soon!

“Pressure & Time was done exactly like we did ‘Before the Fire’.  We wrote the tunes that day, all together in the room with our producer, Dave Cobb.  Sometimes it was easy, other times one or two of us would hate what was going on – but always, amazingly, we all love what ended up going down to tape.  It keeps it real interesting for us – and hopefully it translates to the audience.  The discovery process is always the most interesting.  It’s a very jazz-like aesthetic.  A lot of the songs are comprised of mostly first-takes.  Sometimes second-takes.  So, there’s very little premeditation in our playing.  Anyone can lock themselves in a studio and polish their turds for months on end; then you see them live, and they SUCK or they have to play with tracks ’cause they’ve fallen in love with their shiny turd so much they don’t even want to try and recreate it for fears of coming up short.  We are not afraid to come up short – we have bad shows, but they are guaranteed to be honest representations of how we are feeling that day, same with our album.”

RIVAL SONS guitarist SCOTT HOLIDAY adds:
“When we recorded the song ‘Pressure and Time’, it was maybe the third or fourth song we finished.  Jay had come up with the line, and when we drove home that night I told them I think it’s a very appropriate title for the record.  We still had more than half the record ahead of us, so yes, there was some pressure, with little time, but also it was more of a general feeling about life, how in all walks of life we suffer this ‘pinch’ of pressure and time…  It’s universal, and has a bit of conflict and tension in there.

The idea behind recording in such a short time, or seemingly ‘limiting’ ourselves is simple: rock ‘n’ roll has become over-produced and over-worked, leaving minimal or no room for things like danger, visceral energy or capturing an immediate or instinctual reaction in the moment – which, of course, are the building blocks of rock ‘n’ roll!  We wanted to keep those elements in our recorded music and thought this would be the coolest, most insured way to do it.  In doing this, we are forced to just play what feels ‘right’, and even if something’s not ‘perfect’, we know we were looking for a feeling happening in the room when we captured it together.  Rock ‘n’ roll is not perfect, but the best of it is definitely DANGEROUS and IMMEDIATE; that’s what we strived for.”
